5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
My 3 year old daughter has recently discovered Curious George so while looking for a few books to buy her, I came across this one and thought that for the price, it was a great value. I was right. She loves the stories and we read them over and over. We have had no trouble with the binding or any other aspects of the book construction. It's been fun for my husband and I to read the background information about the Reys and how George came to be and how he's evolved. We were both George fans when we were kids so it's great fun to be able to share him with our daughter. I'd buy this again in a heartbeat.

5-0 out of 5 stars For old memories and new...
I recently purchased this book as a 34 year old with no children of my own, perhaps only to reconnect with a literary mammal that played such a huge role in my own childhood.I found that with every page turn, the images and the stories brought back a flood of wonderful memories that rekindled my own imagination. You already know the adventures, but you'll be surprised at what this trip into your past will do for your soul.Buy this book and make yourself happy.Oh, yeah, and the kids, too.

In contrast to other statements made by other reviewers, I found the book to be of perfectly acceptable quality, and the colors and reproductions were very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Crunk Gift Idea
This is the ultimate compendium for all Curious George enthusiasts.I nearly cried when the Man In The Yellow Hat forgave George after another one of his ruckuses.George is quite the rapscallion, I must say.We can all learn something from the young monkey who always gets into trouble. Can he even be compared to Heathcliff, that wacky, tricky cat?!Perhaps the two should engage in a battle of the wills. All in all, this was an incredible read.A very crunk book, especially for those of you who love yellow hats. ... Amelia Bedelia (I Can Read Book 2)

    Editorial Review

Amelia Bedelia is a housekeeper who takes her instructions quiteliterally. Reading the list of chores that her employer has left her, Amelia begins with "Dust the furniture." How odd, Amelia thinks to herself. "At my house we undust the furniture." Nonetheless, she dutifully locates the "Dusting Powder" in the bathroom, and proceeds to sprinkle it all over the living-room furniture and floor. Next she is asked to "Draw the drapes when the sun comes in." So of course, Amelia sits down with a sketchpad and gives it her best shot. Children love reading about the antics of silly Amelia Bedelia for myriad reasons. It's anearly reader book, so children in primary grades can take satisfaction in reading the book on their own. But, even more thrilling, children who are 6 and older can successfully interpret the figurative meaning behind most adult idioms. Being told to "keep an eye on the cat," for example, might compel some preschoolers to stick their eyeballs on a cat's face, eliciting peals of laughter from know-it-all grownups. But older children know better, and they love the fact that they know better. Young readers will find this bumblingly charming, eager-to-please housekeeper as irresistible as Amelia Bedelia's employers do. (Ages 6 and older) --Gail Hudson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Great for Children After all these Years
When Mr. and Mrs. Rogers hired Amelia Bedelia to be their housekeeper they had no idea just how literally she takes everything people tell her. This, of course, gets Amelia into several curious to say the least situations that will amuse you and your child as you read to him or her. In this first book of the series Amelia is left with a list of things to do while they are out. She is supposed to draw the drapes, now why would they want a picture of the drapes. She is supposed to put out the lights, so she takes them out of their sockets, goes outside and hangs them up. So why do the Rogers' keep her on if she is such a fumbling, bumbling housekeeper? Could have something to do with her lemon meringue pie?

My son Devon is fast approaching three. He knows his letters, upper and lower case. He knows they make words and he loves to sit while I read Amelia Bedelia stories to him. We've been doing it for over a year now. At first I made up the story line as his didn't have the attention span or the ability to understand. Now I've started reading, pointing to the words as I go along. Ms. Parish has written an excellent series for children and in this one, Mr. Siebel's illustrations set off Amelia's tales to a tee. If you want your toddler to read early, and I do, then this is a series for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dated and dull
Amelia Bedelia might have been fun in 1965 but the whole series is excruciating now.Your child only needs to read one of these books to get the whole Amelia deal - the other titles in this series are just more of the same.

There are many book series that kids can get nowadays - Junie B Jones, Horrible Harry and so on.They're much more interesting than Amelia.

I once read a review of Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat that described it as a 'karate chop on the weary little world of Dick, Jane and Spot.'It wasn't until my kids read Amelia Bedelia that Irealised that examples of this weary little world were still being published.Long live the Seussian Revolution, I say.

5-0 out of 5 stars kids love this silly book
This humorous story about a literal-minded maid will make advanced beginning readers laugh as they learn about idioms.Kids love the goofy things that Amelia does. She is a nice person but, as our children say, not too bright. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Peets favorite
According to Bill Peets autobiography, this book was his favorite. He said that it reflected his own past, and he put a lot of his own personal memories in the book. The story of Chesters journey paralleles Peets journey to work for Disney studios as an animator in his younger days.Roscoe the clown as the master showman in the story, is in reality Bill's old boss Walt Disney.Walt was respected by Peet, even if they had their differences. If you like Bill Peets books, be sure to read his autobiography, and this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Classic
Quite simply, this is a must for both kids and adults. It is a wonderful story that teaches the importance of "just being you". After loving this book as a child, I bought a copy to read to my children someday. More parents should take another look at Bill Peet books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great selection for home or classroom!
I love Chester!I use this book to introduce a thematic unit in my classroom.Chester is a great character that the children identify with and they root for him throughout the book. When we discover exactly whyChester is the "worldly" pig, the students go crazy!!This storyis an excellent springboard for geography and the seven continents!! ... Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

    Editorial Review

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and its sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, along with Roald Dahl's other tales for younger readers, make him a true star of children's literature. Dahl seems to know just how far to go with his oddball fantasies; in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, for example, nasty Violet Beauregarde blows up into a blueberry from sneaking forbidden chewing gum, and bratty Augustus Gloop is carried away on the river of chocolate he wouldn't resist. In fact, all manner of disasters can happen to the most obnoxiously deserving of children because Dahl portrays each incident with such resourcefulness and humor.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a singular delight, crammed with mad fantasy, childhood justice and revenge, and as much candy as you can eat. The book is also available in Spanish (Charlie y la Fabrica de Chocolate). (The suggested age range for this book is 9-12, but nobody this reviewer has met can resist it, including New York City bellhops, flight attendants, and grumpy teenagers.) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent piece of children's literature.
Everything about this story is "larger than life" - the shipwreck, the rescue, and the race at the end. It's a bit of a fantasy, but somehow it doesn't seem to matter... if anything, it only heightens the experience.

Farley has a easy, pleasant writing style that will draw you in and never let go.Two thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This book is absolutly wonderful and I think Farley did an exelent job. This book keeps you intertained the whole way and it really gets you involved in the story, almost like being there. The Black Stallion is about a boy who is stranded on an island after a devastating ship wreck with a wild stallion. The boy, Alex, soon befriends the horse and they get rescued off the island but he knows that the horse is fast and pairs up with an old racer to train the black stallion to race the two fastest horses at that time.Trust me... this book makes you feel sad when it ends, it's so good.It also gives you a good picture of what it might be like to race on a track.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bonded for Life
Walter Farley takes readers on a literary whirlwind in this exciting story of a boy and his horse in the mid Forties.HIS, not by legal possession, but rather an ownership born of mutual cooperation for survival.Washed overboard from a tramp steamer near the Mediterranean, Alec Ramsay (12-14) was saved from drowning by clinging to a rope around the neck of a mighty black stallion, who was also plunged into the sea. Long weeks spent on a tiny island forged a loyal and lasting bond between the
sunburned boy and the wild animal--who was never intended for
corrals and civilization. With patience, perseverance and respectful love Alec gradually tamed the suspicious animal, who ultimately permitted him to ride bareback.

Finally rescued they reached Rio and then were shipped back to New York city, but Alex had been given a vision of the Black's future: he wanted to race the magnificent animal on a real racetrack, to share the glory of his Arabian heritage.Countless obstacles were thrown in his way including parental reluctance, lack of money and time and the Black's own fighting spirit. But the greatest hurdle would prove the lack of papers documenting his lineage.Besides the Black had to be king of the herd and would always prove too wild to race with dignified, high-toned thoroughbreds. Can an old jockey and an untried boy pull off the biggest racing coup in US history? This is great fare for horse lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars The classic that started a tradition!
This review is about the Applewood reprint edition of the Tower Treasure.Revision of the Hardy Boys mysteries began in 1959 with the revision of Tower Treasure and a few other titles. We are very fortunate that Applewood has published the original text of the first 15 Hardy Boys stories. This is the first time readers have had the chance to read the original text of The Tower Treasure in 40+ years. This original text story is richer than the revised text version. Most notable is the inclusion of humor, but character development is also more in depth than the more modern stories.Subplots are also used more freely. This is an enjoyable read.Adults under 50 have probably not read this version of Tower Treasure, so it will be a revelation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got My Son to Read!!
Although my 9-year-old son is willing to read when he has to, reading is pretty far down on his list of desirable leisure activities, below TV, video games, computer, Hot Wheels, and so on. However, this book, dated though it may be, changed all that. He stayed up late to read it, carried it to school with him, read it in the car, while he was eating... you get the picture. He hardly put it down until he was finished. I have already ordered the next 5 in the series. (Get the starter set, it's cheaper.) Yes, the characters are dated, the language is stilted, the plot is contrived and the details are unrealistic, especially to an adult jaded by "Law & Order" and "CSI." But the characters demonstrate independent problem-solving; they'rerespectful to their parents, other adults, and the girls they date; there's no inappropriate language or toilet humor; and best of all, the kid loved it. Three cheers for the Hardy Boys!

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated, but it points the series in the proper direction.
This is the book that started the Hardy Boys genre. It starts when they are almost run over by a speeding motorist and then they learn that the car of their friend, Chet Morton has been stolen. The major crime occurs when jewels and bonds are stolen from the mansion of Hurd Applegate. It appears to have been an inside job, so the father of one of their friends, who works for Applegate, is suspected and arrested. Fenton Hardy, the father of Frank and Joe, is a famous detective and tracks down the real thief. The thief flees and is severely injured in the chase. On his deathbed, he tells Fenton where the loot is hidden. Unfortunately, everyone misunderstands his statement and the loot is not found. Finally, Frank and Joe solve the problem, recover the material and receive a reward. The action is fast-paced, just right for the adolescent child.
In this book, nearly all of the major characters of the genre are introduced. The Hardy family, Chet and Iola Morton, Callie Shaw, Tony Prito, Biff Hooper, Police Chief Collig, Detective Smuff, and Patrolman Con Riley are all described. The three police officers are characterized as buffoons and in later issues they were portrayed as much more intelligent. With the exception of Chet, we learn very little about the other friends of the Hardy's.
This review is based on the original version published in 1927 and the book is very dated. From the wording and some of the situations, it is clear why those who hold the copyright decided to have it rewritten. Phrases such as "chums" for friends and my favorite, "gay-looking speed-wagon" for a nice looking car are incomprehensible to modern young people. There is a horse-drawn wagon, excitable Italians and simple-minded farmers in the story.
While there are some obvious weaknesses in the plot and many of the characters are not well developed, much of that is corrected in later books in the series. Generations of young boys like myself grew up wanting to be detectives, and that desire was generated by the books in the Hardy Boys series.
