3-0 out of 5 stars Good and interesting book
This is a interesting book about JKO, but certainly not the best on the shelves.Keogh makes to many shallow assumptions throughout but, the reader can feel that the author maintains respect for JKO.It is also interesting how she decribes JKO's interior designing style, which I loved. She even has pictures of JKO's dressing room in the White House and her drawing room at 1040 Fifth Avenue, which is a VERY beautiful room.Keogh encompasses many aspects of JKO's style, her love of literature and art, and most of all- her family. A good read, worth the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jackie Style lush but lacking.
I was attracted to this book by its feel and the promise of learning more about that certain "something" Jackie radiates. After mentally debating the price, my lust for more Jackie style information won out and I purchased it. It is a substantial book in many ways but weak in others. The beginning of the book is awkward as the author describes what Jackie was thinking after her husband won the Presidency. How could the author know? The authors assumptions immediately made me question the rest of the books authenticity. As I read through the book however, the author changed tactics and began to describe the first lady using research that was factually supported. She discusses Jackie's upbringing, her role as young woman, and beyond. Though most of the information has been written about before, several aspects were elaborated on to add a new twist and make them more interesting. For example, I had read many times about Jackie winning Vogue magazines Prix de Paris competition, but never in the detail Keough gives. There are a number of photographs in the book but unfortunatly the way they are presented lacks impact. Many are black and white, others small for the page, few are new, and in general they don't have the luster that they could. For example, p.182 has a full size, black and white photograph of Jackie with flowers fully covering her face. If this is one of the never seen photographs Keough promises well I can see why. Another page is devoted to a full color photo of Ari Onasis. Since the full color photos of Jackie are few why not make it one of her? Pamela Keoughs previous book Audrey Style had a much better selection of pictures that made an impression! There are also some line sketches of Jackie in a pillbox. The sketch looks more like Anjelica Houston. The information in the book is broad. The author has obviously done alot of research and she relays the information with her fresh perspective. But many readers will wish for more information about Jackie's STYLE not her life history. For those just beginning to read about Jackie this will be a good introduction but to those familiar with her and the books about her this will be a rehash and retelling.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oh Jackie!
Pam Keogh's clear and stunning portrait of Jackie Kennedy Onassis gives the reader aspects of this complex and intriguing woman from the inside out.It is a warm and visually beautiful view of JKO that goes beyond what she wore where. If you want a glimpse of the private Jackie, buy this book! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

In 1953, When Audrey Hepburn burst onto the screen in Roman Holiday, she forever changed the international ideal of elegance, grace, and beauty. Suddenly, glamour and even sexiness seemed attainable for women everywhere; Audrey was uncommonly beautiful, but she was real--hers was a look anyone could aim for, but few could pull off as effortlessly or effectively. By mixing a few classic elements of "Audrey style"--the little black dress, ballet flats with slim capri pants, bold hats and sunglasses--suburban housewives became more Hollywood than Hoboken in an instant.

Here author Pamela Clarke Keogh introduces us to the woman behind the clothes, using words from friends, fellow actors, and designers who dressed her to paint a picture of a truly remarkable woman. A humanitarian, artist, friend, and above all, survivor, Audrey inspired women and men alike to approach life with spirit, grace, and simplicity. The nearly 100 color and black-and-white photographs, paired with original sketches from such fashion luminaries as Givenchy, Manolo Blahnik, and Vera Wang, show that Audrey was much more than a beautiful, well-dressed personality; her courage and individuality come shining through in every page. --Leah Ball ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The photos are superb, AND...
It's putting the quirky details together that makes this book more revealing than the standard saccharin drenched puff piece.

For example, Hepburn is quoted as saying that she wears a size 8 1/2 shoe, while the author clearly states later in the book that Hepburn wore a size ten.

Her mother's quotes, if accurate, provide convincing evidence that the baroness was more than a little jealous of her far more beautiful daughter.

The author's claim that Audrey "didn't eat during times of stress" directly contradicts Audrey Wilder and Doris Brynner, who claimed thatHepburn loved to eat.As for her staying so thin due to malnutrition that"permanently altered her metabolism", this can't be true; according to the author Hepburn speaks of gaining twenty pounds at one point in her youth. I suspect that in later years she simply watched what she ate.

According to the author, Hepburn washed her hair every four or five days. She SMOKED.Whew, draw you OWN conclusions about that one.

I've found Robert Wolders a bit creepy ever since I read about him in "Queenie", a superb biography of Merle Oberon. From Merle to Audrey to Shirlee Fonda; this guy clearly has a THING for wealthy, older glamour girls. He's always described as an actor/businessman. Hmmmmmmm.

I'd never paid much attention to Hepburn's style outside of her movie roles. One of the strengths of this book is its focus on her personal fashion philosophy.

Audrey Hepburn is my absolute favorite and always will be.She had many lessons to teach about tolerance, grace and kindness. No star of today can compare.

PS-I'm just tucking into the Barry Paris book, which is FAR more in depth. I recommend following Audrey Style with this one if you haven't already read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect book about a perfect lady
I really like this book-it really shows what an absolutely beautiful lady she was-she certainly was very sensual and sexy. She knew how to project herself without going overboard-
the lady had class and it really showed. There aren't any actresses like Audrey anymore-I really miss her.

I highly recommend getting this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Delivery doesn't match topic
A book like this should have more pictures. The ones it does have don't have captions. The writing is fairly ameteurish but does have some interesting stuff despite being from an angle I didn't like.I didn't like the big black pages with the white lettered quotes not just because some of the quotes weren't especially good, but because you can't read the middle that is in the binding and seems to be poor quality ink or paper. All around this book is just okay, great topic, poor delivery. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for those who just don't understand...
As one who was born in the South, and has returned to live here after many years away, this book has been a household favorite for a long time.We have given away at least a dozen copies, and we also have a "house" copy in our guest room. It's the perfect way to explain some or our more entertaining habits to those from "off" (the perfect Charleston word for Yankees).

5-0 out of 5 stars Every single word is true!
My mother and I, both raised in the South, laughed and laughed while reading this book.It was so funny to us because ever single word in it is true. From the iced teas pitchers and deviled eggs platters to the silver pattern I selected for my wedding registry and joining the Junior League.

I am giving this book as a gift to my friend, who is a Brit marrying into a very southern family. She will hardly know what hit her otherwise.

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth can be scary!
Having grown up in Alabama, Florida and Texas and experienced similar stories and events first hand, I can tell you that this is a great reflection of Southern female society.Although it has a "tonge-in-cheek" feel to it, make no mistake..... these are the rules to live or be ostricized by. ... Social Graces was a big help in knowing how to tip waitresses, bell boys, ect... Working in a tourist town and knowing who to tip or not can sometimes be a concern for most people. Especially for those of us that don't get out of the hills much, so the book was very helpful. I would like to see more manner books on social conversation and answering gracefully in difficult situations. So keep writing Aunts! (You will understand that statement when you read the book!) Buy it today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Social Graces
Once upon a time, children learned social skills around the family dining table. With today's busy schedules and often so many mothers working, families find less time for such traditions. Experts on hospitality andwarm sociability, Ann Platz and Susan Wales provide readers with aneasy-to-follow how-to manual of social graces. Learning the rules ofetiquette is possible with Social Graces. This charming book makes lifeeasier and more fun, and also helps instill a sense of self-confidence.Life is like a game, if you don't know the rules, you can't succeed inlife. It's important to remember, however, that the rules of etiquette areof the book; manners are of the heart. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars the clothes of camelot
I absolutely loved this book.Jackie just looks so beautiful. Her fashion sense is remarkable. And she looks so elegant and beautiful. She was simply the greatest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent record of 60's style as seen thru the eyes of JO
I am not a die-hard Jackie O fan, but I love fashion in general. I have always thought of Jackie O as a fashion icon, and wanted to learn more about her.Until now, I have never seen a book that pictorally does her sense of style justice. However, in this book there are enough photographs both in black and white and in color to satisfy any fashion junkie or Jackie O fan.No matter what the situation, Jackie O was always appropriately and fashionably attired. This book does an excellent job of showing this by portraying her clothing choices through the years and in a variety of categories. This book does not go into great detail about Jackie O as a person or historical figure, I don't think it was written with those objectives in mind, but it should satisfy the fashion cravings of most people.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chic at its best!
Who else, in all the other First Ladies, could have worn all those beautiful clothes with the chic and style Jackie had! Not many I guess. In this beautiful book, there are some never seen before pictures, that demonstrates what elegance in fashion is all about. It will take a long time before we can see that again in the White House. I treasure that book that makes me relive that unique period of refinement and class that once was in the White House, thanks to Jackie! ... Read more

Okay, by now its known I have a pretty vast collection of beauty books, and how could I resist one that made you into Marilyn Monroe? This book is fun, it encourages you to be spontaneous, extravagant, and (gasp!) sexy. Its perfectly acceptable to be sexy, not just at home or out with friends, but in the office, shopping for groceries or taking the dog for a walk. Every woman has it within her, that coy little minx just waiting to show herself and be petted.
A bombshell, and Jayne Mansfield put it, is a woman in cresendo. I love that. I love the idea that it is wonderful to accept yourself and revel in your own beauty. Be extravagant (champagne in the bathtub) be spontaneous (passionately kiss your lover in public) and at the same time always a lady.
    Good book, good read.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Bombshells are almost extinct!"
I enjoyed this book.It was a light, fun read...great illustrations. No, it's not the be all end all book for being a bombshell, but it was entertaining nonetheless.

My only complaint is the mention of Patricia Arquette and Drew Barrymore amongst legends such as Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyon Monroe, Ava Gardener and Rita Hayworth.Pleeeeese! What on earth has Patricia Arquette or Drew Barrymore done to deserve to be mentioned in such glamourous company?

If this book had been written a few years later they might have mentioned others more closely resembling modern bombshells: Jennifer Lopez, Catherine Zeta Jones, (even little Jessica Simpson can qualify on some counts)...or Melania Trump?

These women are only slightly close to the bombshells of the past in certain ways...multiple marriages, lovely in gowns, shopping in high heels, over-the-top million dollar weddings....

But Drew and Patricia are not in the same stratosphere.I think the authors were hardpressed to find someone from our time to mention and those two were thrown into the mix....Doesn't work.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is NOT an instruction book
Please, people, obviously Ms. Stover never intended this book to be some sort of self help endeavor. She is actually a very intelligent woman if you've ever bothered to read anything else she's written. Anyway, this book is about deconstructing and examining what it is to be a bombshell, the whole idea behind the image. And none of the women discussed in the book would anyone consider to be "slutty" or "bimbo-esque" as has been suggested in other reviews. Also I think another over-arching point of this book is that women don't have to dress and act like a New England prep or intellectual snob to be an intelligent, powerful, vivacious woman. If you like old movies and are fascinated by the bombshell persona then this is absolutely a book for you. Very easy to read a la cart with lots of interesting anecdotes about all those bombshell women. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
I love the humorous & light hearted way in which this book was written. It's very informative & is perfect for those in their twenties who are just starting out. It gives you advice on everything from the light hearted to the very serious. What would I do without this book?

2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't live up to expectations
After reading the reviews that others left, I excitedly ordered this book & then impatiently waited for it to arrive.I dug in as soon as I got the package opened, but I was sorely disappointed when I read through it.To me, it was a very shallow book with very little of substance to it.I was looking for something that would truly be helpful to me in choosing clothing for my job, in getting relationship advice, in knowing how to be a success in my 20's........all I can say is that I am disappointed in myself for believing the reviews--that these things could be found in this book.I'd recommend checking it out of your local public library for free before buying it.That way, if you end up not liking it, you won't have wasted money on it like I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most beloved book of a bookworm
I was given this book in my last year of college, which is exactly when I needed it most. She's wise, and funny, and gave me hope that my wildly out of control life could be calm and interesting and together.. mostly by giving me the advice that I needed to get going. It's been a couple of years, and I'm considering ordering the book in bulk for christmas presents. It might keep my sister from stealing mine. Having this is a lot like having a fascinating friend who's just lived through her twenties, and gives funny advice about it. She taught me how to unplug a drain, what should be in my toolbox (and reminded me to get hands on about decorating, instead of just shopping) got me started on a great wardrobe (which was really helpful when I started my career), showed me that even really disorganized people can get their finances together.. and work life, social life & even love life. In most ways, she's obviously not trying to write an exhaustive manual, and will tell you how to find really good books that do focus on one topic, such as Suze Orman's great books on finances. However, some of the advice she gives can't be found in any other books I've read. The advice on friendship, and learning to live happily on your own is obviously hard won, and she handles both with the care and thoughtfulness they each deserve. Give this as a gift to your favorite young woman, especially if that's yourself. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A mediocre look at French Style
I bought this book expecting it to be as wonderful as French Chic by fashion writer Suzanne Somer (unfortunately out of print) or A Year of Style by Frederic Fekkai.Unfortunately, this book is filled with dated clothing and very little substance to explain the French fashion mystique. However, there are two other great books that are keepers. The first is Frederic Fekkai: A Year of Style. The famous French stylist does an excellent job of showing you how to be beautiful with easy and simple ideas to use throughout the year. The second book is A Guide to Elegance: For Every Woman Who Wants to Be Well and Properly Dressed on All Occasions by Geneviere Antonine Dariaux.Madame Genevieve Antoine Dariaux, former directrice for Nina Ricci shares her extensive expertise on creating the classic French look.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting & Entertaining
It's an elegant, high-class look that they describe. They do a really good job of explaining it, with repetition and examples.I got such a clear picture of what was wanted that with quite a lot of clothes in my closet, plus the coincidence of a department store in town having a closing out sale, I was able to get basically equipped in one hectic day.

3-0 out of 5 stars Buy our jewlery...Please!
This book has great pictures....but only of the authors!!!!
The worst is on page 72. They say they are shopping at the Chanel boutique.
O.k. then why does one of them have a SENSO(the security tag) on"Her" clothes?
It looks more like...Let's go to the boutique and PRETEND we are shopping.

    Editorial Review

Sure, a swell girl can bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan, but that's just the beginning. She can also turn a last-minute dinner party into a cabaret, create a push-up bra out of electrical tape, and fix a flat in pumps and a pencil skirt. Move over, Miss Manners, this is advice for the girl on the go.

Billed as a "Girl's Guide to the Good Life," Swell is a lively reference that is both practical and a gas to read. Entries range from hangover cures to transforming junk mail into party invitations to snagging a prime table in a packed restaurant. Need tips on tipping? This book will help you score points with everyone from the shampoo girl to the valet. It will also outline how to hail a cab with a four-finger whistle and gracefully take a seat--in a micromini, no less--without showing more than gams. If that's not enough, the authors even detail how to pack your entire life (or at least the important stuff) into a four-inch lipstick tote.

Cynthia Rowley, a fashion designer, and Ilene Rosenzweig, a style editor for The New York Times, blend imaginative advice with humor and grace without sounding like self-conscious hipsters or society snobs. They couldn't care less where a soup spoon should be placed, but they share exactly what you need to know about wine, gifts, clothing, gambling, and even cigars. They also devote an entire hilarious chapter to the topic of love and its various side effects. Ideal for those on a tight schedule and a shoestring budget, Swell offers proof that living the good life depends more on creativity and attitude than a hefty bankroll. After all, "there are two words that a swell should never utter: 'I'm bored.'" --Shawn Carkonen ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Eh.Cute -- amusing even but a little light on useful info.
The book's authors keep their sassy _sex_in_the_city_ tone throughout, but unless you're a denizon on manhatten, I'm not sure how useful this book can actually be.Maybe I'm not glamourous enough for this book.I suppose it did make me strive for more glamour in my life, but when I set the book down and realized my fully suburban existence, the book came up short with truly translatable wisdom. A cute gift for a gal just leaving college. At 28, I was far too aged for this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars funny, but are they serious?
This book did make me laugh, but I think a lot of their advice was intended as a joke. Some of it was pretty good, like buying take-out, then adding a few "homemade" touches to pass it off as your own. These girls crack me up. It's a fun read if nothign else. Buy it used, like I did.

1-0 out of 5 stars a "Swell" ethos with no social conscience
The brilliant and witty ethos of Cynthia Rowley and Ilene Rosenzweig shows creativity and talent. I HAVE BUT ONE CRITICISM...WHAT THE HECK ARE THESE GALS DOING ADVOCATING THE WEARING OF FUR ON CLOTHING???? THEY WILL BE INFLUENCING THE FEMALES OF THE LAND WITH THEIR FEMME FATALLE ADVICE. WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO ESPOUSE THE TREND OF WEARING FUR IN TODAY'S WORLD?IS IT ALL ABOUT THE MONEY????? IS THIS THE WAY OF THE WORLD TODAY?...MAKE A BUCK - DON'T CARE HOW YOU MAKE IT???? Take the "shahtoosh" for instance, that is advocated to wear in place of a coat, as the "in" thing. Unfortunately, the suggestions of wearing the shahtoosh will not help the already "endangered species" from which the shahtoosh will be made, which is the Tibetan antelope. So any of you naysayers out there think that this is just one animal, and who cares??? Well, we should all care about how many species on this planet we endanger or extinct.
