5-0 out of 5 stars Daughter's Favorite Toy
These books by Karen Katz are wonderful. My daughter recevied these books from my mother when she was 8 months, she is now 11 months and i must tell you that this book remains her favorite thing to play with. She kisses all the babies in the book. My mother actually purchased Karen Katz's books as a set it came with Where Is Baby's Mommy?, Where Is Baby's Bellybutton, and Toes, Ears, and Nose. My daughter just loves lifting the flaps and has learned where her tongue, nose, eyes, ears, etc... are thanks to these great books! I assure you that your child will just love this book!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Laura's Mom
We love the Karen Katz books. This is my favorite as we ask the question and then of course, tickle, roll over, play, and laugh. The kids love to hear the baby laugh and laugh. It's pretty cute because then they want me to do it to them. It's a fun affair for the whole family. If you don't have her books, you're missing out on bonding with just about everyone in the family, even Dad.Another favorite book is one that helps keep these kiddos in line and makes family life seem calmer, Mommy,CEO.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nathan found his belly button!
I found this to be the best of the Karen Katz books I bought. Nathan loves seeing the baby in the book unveil the same body parts as the ones he's pointing to on himself! It really helped him get a handle on eyes, mouth, etc.
    Great book. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Nina Laden's illustrations in this simple, rhyming board book are truly magical. The format is straightforward: on alternating two-page spreads, the words "Peek a" are repeated, opposite an illustrated page with a die-cut hole, behind which lurks a cow ("MOO!"), a green ghost ("BOO!"), and a mirror (you guessed it, "YOU!"). The youngest readers will delight in trying to guess who--or what--is peeking through the window, and can easily grip the baby-fist-size holes to turn the pages for the answers. The picture of the "ZOO!" is fabulous. Through the hole, all that can be seen is a wild pattern of colors, stripes, and spots. Turn the page, and find a wild kingdom of animals, one in front of the other: peacock, zebra, penguin, cheetah, elephant, and more. Ready for more peekaboo fun? Try Nina Laden's Ready, Set, Go! . My baby absolutely loves this book. We've been reading it to her since she was born and now at 7.5 months, she grins everytime she sees it.I'm buying a second copy, as the first one has been chewed/handled so much that it's starting to fall apart.Highly recommended!

It never fails to put a huge smile on her face.I think she is beginning to be able to anticipate each different Who.Also, its nice and small, she likes to hold it herself.

    Highly recommended!!

    Good Night, Gorilla

    Editorial Review

"Good night, Gorilla," says the weary watchman as he walks by thegorilla cage on his nightly rounds at the zoo. The gorilla answers by quietly pickpocketing the guard's keys, stealthily trailing him, and unlocking the cages of every animal the oblivious fellow bids goodnight to. Looking much like an exhausted father, the uniformed guard traipses home toward his cottage, while the lonely zoo animals softly parade behind him. The animals manage to slip into his bedroom and nestle unnoticed near his sleepy wife--until the bold little gorilla goes so far as to snuggle up beside her as she turns out the light.Author and illustrator Peggy Rathmann (creator of the Caldecott-winning Officer Buckle and Gloria) relies more on the nuances of her jewel-toned pictures than on words to pace this giggly bedtime story, making it perfect for observant preschoolers. In one inky-black spread, Rathmann lets only the shocked, wide-open eyes of the guard's wife tell us that the gorilla has been detected! Tiny details such as the faithful, banana-toting mouse and sky-bound pink balloon that appear in each picture keep this book fresh, magical, and fun--even after countless bedtime readings. 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!! Couldn't live without it.
What an awesome, simple story for young children. My sons love the black page with just the zookeeper's wife's eyes.If I start this book with one son, the other comes running over as soon as I say, "Goodnight, Gorilla".They can't get enough of it.This one never gets rotated out of our book bin.

They have learned so much vocabulary from this story even though it is far from being word intensive. They point out the keys, moon, balloon, banana, zookeeper's shirt and the flashlight on all of the pages.Just today, one of my sons pointed out his own shirt after I labeled the zoopkeeper's.

Use this book with older siblings too!I am a teacher too and would use this for children who have trouble writing. So many times students won't write because they don't have a story in mind.Show them the book. The story structure is there, just have the students add the text.I have done it with other books and the technique works wonders.

Hooray, Peggy Rathmann!Keep the good books coming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprised me!
Given that I'm not a fan of gorillas/monkeys/chimps, I was not expecting to like this book at all when we got it as a baby gift--but I love it!I love the colors, I love the characters, and I love the silliness of the story! The little mouse is great; even the gorilla is cute! It's great to see so many kinds of animals sharing an adventure together.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a FUN book for both childrean & parents!!
I purchased this book for my 2-year-old son. I had studied the reviews carefully before purchasing, and was convinced this would be a nice addition to his library. When we got the book, I first read it by myself for evaluation & to practice my reading. And...I couldn't help but laugh out laud because it was SO FUNNY! You will love the concept & humor of the story. And how CUTE the illustration of all of the zoo animals!! I was very impressed and couldn't wait to read it to my boy at his bed time. His reaction - he got glued to it! Every time he saw a new animal coming out of the cage he gasped and then screamed! I don't know how much of the humor he can understand but he certainly adores every single page of the book. The only phrase used in this book is a simple "Good night, xxxx (animal name)", and the rest depends upon your story telling & how you want to enjoy the book. But I assure you and your child will love all of the characters in this book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Homeopathic Pizza
An unwed mother risks her baby's life by placing him in the bathtub and to see if he can swim. She then stands by while he drinks all of the water in the tub and eats the soap, stopping him only when he attempts to eat the bathtub itself (an effort which, fortunately for all concerned, fails).

She then defies all conventional medical advice and treats him with ... pizza.Admittedly, this is more attractive than either penicillin or castor oil, but still borders on parental negligence.

Fortunately, this all goes above the head of the average toddler, who will enjoy the rhyming and the goofy pictures. And the pizza!

    Recommended.

    "Flies in the sugarbowl,
    Shoo fly shoo.
    Cats in the buttermilk,
    Two by two.
    Pigs in the parlor,
    What'll I do?
    My darling!"

Left to mind the farm while his parents go shopping, a little boy watches helplessly as the barnyard animals take over. Well, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em! Soon he's sharing in the hullabaloo, frolicking with the cows in the kitchen, the sheep in the bathtub, and the roosters in the pantry, helping to make a major mess. In the spirit of Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond's If You Give a Pig a Pancake (the pigs in the parlor are even eating pancakes!), this lively adaptation of the well-loved song is guaranteed to perk up the dullest day. Nadine Bernard Westcott creates a riot of sounds, sights, and giggles for the young and old. As in her other song-to-book adaptations (including Peanut Butter and Jelly and I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly), the lyrics form most of the text, while Westcott's delightfully chaotic watercolors turn the simple song into a hilarious story. The small board book format is ideal for little hands (and teeth). Recommended use: Sing-along! (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Six pages missing from new edition
I was going to give this book five stars after I got it out of the library. Then I ordered the book from amazon - to be stunned to see that the last SIX pages, some of the funnier ones, are missing! They are:

"Look at the clock, it's a quarter to two. Goodness gracious, what will we do? Hurry quick it's up to you" and showing the animals cleaning up and running back to their paddocks.

The book makes little sense without these.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who knew there was a longer version?
My one-and-a-half year old got this book as part of a package which includes The Lady With the Alligator Purse, Miss Mary Mack, and a cassette with singing on one side and music only on the other. She loves all three books, but this one and The Lady With the Alligator Purse in particular. My only complaint is that the music is on a cassette, not a CD, so I can't play it in my car (though I suppose that may be a blessing of sorts), and I can't skip a track easily. Also, I hadn't realized that this is a somewhat shortened version until I read another review at Amazon. I had also felt that it ends a bit abruptly, though my daughter isn't worried about this point in the least. Anyway, great fun for all.

3-0 out of 5 stars be careful - may be wrong version
this is a great book, at least in it's original form.i first saw it in the doctor's office.our pediatrician says that it's his favorite kids' book.however, the 2 copies I received from amazon were a shorter version, only 24 pages.in this shorter version, the action ends abruptly with the house in a mess.in the real version (30 pages - the one that's advertised here) there is a final verse in which the animals hurriedly clean the house before the parents come home.make sure you get that one! ... Hug
    by JEZ ALBOROUGH
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
    Hardcover (01 November, 2000)

    Editorial Review

How can it be that a book with only one word--hug--repeated throughout, can be so good? The proof is in the pudding (or the wilds of Africa) in Jez Alborough's picture book Hug, a delightful mini odyssey of a baby chimpanzee on the hunt for his mum and a cuddle.

Our little friend wanders through the trees, witnessing many other animals from chameleons to giraffes as they snuggle together. "Hug," he says, happily, at first, but then with growing despair as he sees there are no hugs for him. The story is told purely by the expression on the little chimp's face as his hopes are built up and dashed again until eventually, with a huge smile, he finds his mum and reaps the reward.

Hug is a clever, unusual book that portrays the art of children's illustration at its very best: a story brought to life with the stroke of a brush through facial expressions and body language that children will immediately understand.

Ideal for sharing with small ones, this lovely book is a warm, comforting read that cannot fail to please. (Ages 1 to 4) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's never too early for Hug
When my husband and I first "read" this book it brought tears to our eyes.We thought we were just being overly emotional in those first few sleep-deprived days after coming home from the hospital with our newborn daughter - but nearly one year later, it still has the same effect!

We started reading Hug to our daughter when she was just 3 months old.We were amazed when, at 8 months, she started pointing to the pictures and getting excited each time she saw baby monkey bobo. While she showed interest in other board books, nothing captivated her in the same way that "Hug" did. At first, she simply seemed to enjoy the jungle animals, but we were surprised at how quickly she seemed to fully understand Bobo's plight, mock crying as he sat on his rock and cried, and squealing with joy as Mummy monkey finally swings into sight.

I can't help thinking that this masterful and enchanting book has actually helped our daughter to develop her emotional awareness, while having fun at the same time.I would strongly recommend this book to every new parent!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book suitable for many ages!
One feature I especially like about this book is the lack of text! This allows you to make up the story suitable for the age level. When they get old enough they can be creative and make up the story themselves. It is not hard to make up text- the author does a wonderful job at conveying the emotions of the characters through beautiful illustrations.

The story is simple- basically about a baby chimpanzee looking for his mother so he can be hugged like the other animals are hugged.A warning, as I mentioned above- there is hardly any text- just the word "hug" said by the little chimp throughout.I view this as a positive because it allows creativity- but if you do not like that style this book is not for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lack of words encourages baby to "tell" the story
This book is just adorable. The lack of words takes me out of the driver's seat, and leaves my 14-month-old daughter to jabber away with her own version of what's going on.What a great idea. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Learning Book
I can't remember when my 18 month old wasn't interested in this book.We have to read it every day, along with Peek a Zoo. It's been great to teach her animals and their sounds! I have however has to glue and tape pages back together because the flaps are just paper. But I still highly recommend both Peek a Moo & Peek a Zoo!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Had to buy a 2nd copy (just in case!)
My daughter, who is 5 months old, loves this book. It has taught her the whole concept of peek-a-boo while also allowing her to look at cute pictures of animals and to learn their sounds. I am buying a second copy b/c I know she will soon tear this one up (she kicks her legs wildly when I read it and tries to grab for the pages which come down as each animal peeks out)! I highly recommend this and will make this a standard baby/shower gift for friends from now on!

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating for little ones
We have all of Oxenburys books in this series (Clap Hands, Say Goodnight, All Fall Down & Tickle Tickle). We also have her Big Baby Book as well. My daughter is 13 months old and loves books, but the books she continually picks out and hands to me are the books in this series. She adores them. My husband and I have probably read these hundreds of times to her, and she is captivated by the art work and the rhyme. A definite must have for your little one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating to a baby!
I have all 4 of these Oxenbury books and both of my kids have been absolutely captivated by them.It is the only book that they will just sit and actively listen and follow from between 6-15 months.Watch their faces while another reads it to them and you will be amazed at how the respond to the simple, large pictures and rhymes. As an adult, I am attracted to more detailed and complex illustrations, but this is what a BABY likes!Any of her books are a perfect way to introduce you child to book reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmerized!
This is my 8 month old's favorite book. Everytime I read it to her, which is everyday for the past several months, she goes into a state of bliss. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic That Stands the Test of Time
I first bought this book for my nephew who is now 17 years old and we loved it so much that I bought it for my baby before he was even born. It's smart and funny and I don't tire of reading it to my son over and over and over...In fact, we have it memorized and we'll recite it on car rides to help pass the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars No, No, That's All Wrong!
Shakespeare knew it, and parents and other adults know it:People love a comedy of errors. Perhaps the most delighted audience is the youngest; toddlers love hearing mistakes and correcting them. It's a surefire hit for their certain sense of humor, and Sandra Boynton exploits this beautifully in this small board book.

Just a few set-up lines and Boynton is ready for the book's main joke:

    "A cow says MOO."
    "A sheep says BAA."
"Three singing pigs say LA LA LA!"

"'No, no!' you say, 'that isn't right.
The pigs say OINK all day and night.'"

Practice your dramatic abilities and really ham it up (pun intended) when you read the singing pigs and "that isn't right" lines on pages 3 and 4. There's also some action (dogs chasing cats), and a nice quizzical conclusion: ("It's quiet now. What do you [underlined] say?")

Boynton's familiar style is whimsical and slightly tongue-in-cheek. Her animals have very expressive, human-looking emotions, conveyed mostly through the eyes. For example, a quacking duck and a neighing horse aren't intrinsically very interesting, but when they're facing each other with similarly baffled faces, there's a subtle humor. The singing pigs, by the way, are anything but subtle. They're pizzazed out in coordinating striped pants, solid sports coats, and elegant white bow ties. They excited pigs dance in unison and hold canes in a showy vaudeville style. For a short and simple board book aimed at the very young, this is lots of fun.For older toddlers, take a look at Boynton's counting book with a difference: "Hippos Go Berserk!"She knows and loves her animals, and so will your little one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Rhinoceroses snort and snuff! You got to be kidding me!
I read this book to my baby on and off and every time I trip at the big ol' Rhinoceroses! Come on Ms. Boynton, your readers can hardly say goo goo and moo moo why such a big word.
It could have been water buffalos or plane old "rhinos" or for that matter "big hippos"

We all love this book at home.It is a board book so tough enough for a toddler. It is also fairly short which is great for little attention spans. It talks of animals which are big deals for my little toddler. It adds concepts of colors in a natural way with each animal. The rythmic read lends itself to using two voices which my son loves.

    Good book!

A young child goes for a walk. This story has repetitive rhyme for the very young child. The child first sees a black cat.As he walks, he sees a variety of animals. The cat follows him, as well as the other animals. He or she meets: a brown horse, a red cow, a green duck, a pink pig and a yellow dog.In the story, the child is missing one shoe as he meets the pig. Each time a partial glimpse of the animal is shown in the illustrations. The reader can play a guessing game.

The child is not defined by the story as being a boy or a girl.I wanted to know.Children memorize the book as they read it over and over again.Memorization is the first stage of reading. The illustrations were beautiful. The text didn't have much meaning as far as the plot goes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Babies!
This is the only book my 8 month old daughter will pay attention to when we read to her.She actually laughs out loud to it!It helps to read it in a bad British accent! We read it before bath time and then play wishy-washy in the tub which keeps her giggling.Love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for any one working with young children.
I first came across this book while student teaching and fell in love instantly.I have used it for many theme units - letter (W), farm unit, and rhyming words unit.I have even made flannel board pieces to go along with the story and put in my literacy centers. My supervising teachers loved the flannel pieces so much they had me make them some also. You children/students will love this book and will in time learn to read it themselves, just as my kindergartners did. GET THIS BOOK :).

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved by children, the favorite on the shelf.
Be prepared to read it over and over again. The pre-schoolers laugh and giggle. They love to say "Wishy-Washy" and can't wait til the next page that opens up.A short enough book, even your littlest readerknows the next page. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

"Some frogs are jumpy; some frogs are still./But how big is a pig? Tellme if you will!" Follow the trail of animal opposites to find out just how big apig can be. With her felt, bead, and sequin illustrations, Clare Beaton craftsan unusual and appealing picture book that teaches young readers the concept ofopposites, while drawing them ever onward to the droll conclusion. The nonsequitur juxtapositions of barnyard idiosyncrasies will not faze the lively, circular minds of children in the slightest; in fact, it's almost as if achild's logic was behind the concept and text from the start! Beaton's handiworkhas appeared in many other cleverly tactile picture books, including One Moose, Twenty Mice. (Ages 3to 6) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

    Editorial Review

There are millions of ways to use a body. Take legs and feet, for example. "Legs are for leaping and jumping and dancing. Legs are for kicking and skipping and hopping. Feet are for STOMPING and suddenly--STOPPING!" This playful celebration of legs and bellies and noses and necks is for those new to these parts, but grownups can always use a reminder of what the old bod can still do. A parade of multi-ethnic toddlers delights in winking eyes, stretching backs, and hugging arms. Brita Granstrom's crayon and watercolor characters romp on backgrounds that look like the kids themselves drew them, complete with flowers and shining suns. Readers are invited to join the exploration to discover the useful and sometimes silly things we can do with what we're born with. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for introducing body parts
My 13 month old has just started learning body parts and thinks this book is WONDERFUL! So far she can point to her nose, ears and mouth. I think it is too hard for pre this age but I expect to get a lot of use out of it for many years to come!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
My Son is 19 months old and he LOVES this book!We first checked it out from the library, but we HAD to buy it, he like it so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book of children
This book is a beautiful journey for your baby and preschoolerabout all those body parts that they love to identify- ears, and noseand toes etc. Further, the illustrations are large and inviting. The most wonderful part of this book is that the children are black and white and asian- they all have noses and ears and eyes, but they don't all look alike. The children look like all of us- different and beautiful. This book conveys more then where your nose is- through illustrations, it introduces and reinforces for our children that everyone is different and that these differences are beautiful and important END ... 4-0 out of 5 stars If only it were that easy!
I love reading this book to my feisty 16 month old boy, & he actually manages to sit through it! The pictures are vibrant, & the pets help! He looks forward to me 'acting out' the words, & it's a great time together. However, getting him to sleep afterwards is not as easy as the baby in the book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kiss kiss kiss kiss kiss
We bought this book for our impending first grandchild and fell thoroughly in love with it.We can't wait until she is here and we can "read" it to her and kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss!
