    Editorial Review

Madonna hangs up her material-girl cloak to teach children the importance of looking beyond a surface sheen. In The English Roses, the superstar's children's book debut, four little girls (the roses in question) "play the same games, read the same books, and like the same boys." Nicole, Amy, Charlotte, and Grace all love to dance the monkey and the tickety-boo… and they all are horribly jealous of Binah, the perfect, beautiful, smart, kind girl who lives nearby. Even though they know Binah is lonely, she makes them sick. They would say, "Let's pretend we don't see her when she walks by." And even, "Let's push her into the lake!" The pleasantly bossy narrator explains, "And that is what they did. No, silly, not the lake part, the pretending not to see her part." One night, however, the four girls all have the same dream that sets them straight. A fairy godmother sprinkles them with fairy dust and takes them to spy on Binah. When they see that she lives alone with her father, slaving away night and day at household chores, the four girly grumblers feel very sorry for her. The fairy scolds them, "… in the future, you might think twice before grumbling that someone else has a better life than you." And they do. This morality tale is nothing new under the sun, but it is cleverly told, with many teaspoonfuls of good humor. Jeffrey Fulvimari's illustrations are no less than stunning--filling every page with vivacious black ink lines and gorgeous watercolor reminiscent of 1960s fashion sketches. Children will enjoy this "don't hate me because I'm beautiful" story that celebrates friendship as much as it teaches compassion. (Ages 6 and older) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

Read this to my daughter once and had to send it back.Poorly written story with rude characters and a totally stupid plot.My five year old could tell a better story!

5-0 out of 5 stars Requested by my young friend
I have a young friend, age 8 who was requesting this book for Christmas. In the process of getting it for her, I became curious and read it myself. I was very attracted to the illustrations, they are beautiful. And the story was right on. I work with young people ages 6 - 15 and the isssue of envy and jealousy that the book addresses hits the mark.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flawless Madonna
Rewind 15 years, the year is 1989. Madonna has proven that she's no blonde fluzy and can fight it out with all the big guys. This record is a celebration of the era when we all knew Madonna was here to stay and continue amazing us with her inexplicable ability to continuouly change. Along with "Express Yourself", "Keep It Together" is a longing cry to freedom and assertiveness. Madonna once again knows how to work the styles and sounds of the late 80's. Classic and matured 80's with a Madonna edge.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unkept
An okay song with terrible remixes. This cd single is annoying and bland. Not worth the buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Song and Remixes
While the remixes here (by Shep Pettibone) are outdated to say the least, they are still very much lovable ones, and are essential to the Madonna fan. This CD makes for an excellent companion to the Like a Prayer album. Any lover of Madonna or extended mixes of late eighties/early nineties dance will love this CD. Keep It Together peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1989, and deservedly. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

With Mr. Peabody's Apples, her gorgeous sophomore venture into the realm of children's literature, Madonna sustains her transformation from material girl to mom. Inspired by a 300-year-old Ukrainian story and illustrated by the talented Loren Long, Madonna's tale is about the dangers of gossip. As a frequent target of the rumor mill, who better to teach the young ones about the "power of words" and their potential to cause "harm to others" than the newly reformed diva?

Set in a tiny American town, Madonna's story features the big-hearted and much beloved Mr. Peabody, an elementary school teacher and Little League coach who dedicates his summer Saturdays to the local losing team. The kindly teacher seems to savor life the way he savors his weekly apple--taking pleasure in the little things. One weekend after the game, Tommy Tittlebottom watches Mr. Peabody take his apple without paying for it. The following weekend Tommy calls in reinforcements to witness Mr. Peabody's transgression. By the next Saturday, Mr. Peabody's apparent theft has become grist for the Happville rumor mill and no one comes to Little League practice. These moments truly highlight Long's talents as an illustrator--the handsome Mr. Peabody (part Harry Connick Jr., part Robert Redford) comes to life on the page, his disappointment as palpable as that of Billy Little, the young boy who idolizes him. A simple explanation puts the rumors to rest, but as Mr. Peabody points out in a poignant demonstration, small talk can often lead to big trouble for everyone.

In a wonderful departure from her debut children's book The English Roses, Madonna has created a tribute to 1940's small-town America that delivers a fundamental message about respecting others. Children will love Mr. Peabody and parents will appreciate the gentle nudge with which he delivers his message. Mr. Peabody's Apples unfolds slowly, but readers young and old will want to linger over each illustrated page lovingly rendered in a muted pallet of rich color. --Daphne Durham ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the story, great illustrations
This is a great story about the damage a rumor can cause. This is something too many kids never learn.I'd love to see more stories like this. The illustrations are fantastic. Is it really that hard to separate this work from the author's past?It seems to me that all of the bad reviews are really past judgements.I give this book a thumbs up!

1-0 out of 5 stars Please don't gossip about Madonna!!!!
It would be so wrong to gossip about anyone. That's the message I got from this book. And so, I won't say anything about the sex book Madonna put out (!!!) in the '90s. And I won't utter a word about the kiss she exchanged with Britanny Spears on national television. And I won't talk about what a hypocrite she is to go from the masochism maven to every toddler's friend

5-0 out of 5 stars The power of language!
I am a communication/public speaking instructor and I am always trying to illustrate the power of words...this story nails it! The artwork is wondersful as well.I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Madonna The Cow Girl
In December 2000, Madonna released the second single (third if you include American Pie) from her smash-hit No.1 album Music. It was called Don't Tell Me and peaked at No.4 in the UK, spending 10 weeks on the chart. It had been a great year for Madonna, and she was on top of the world. Her Music album topped the charts in 26 countries worldwide, she scored massive international No.1 hits with American Pie and Music, she gave birth to her second child, and got married to Guy Ritchie in the biggest celebrity wedding of the new millennium.

Don't Tell Me starts wonderfully with a catchy guitar solo. The beat sounds distorted and faulty, but it's meant to sound like that. Madonna then starts singing the first verse, "Don't tell me to stop. Tell the rain not to drop. Tell the wind not to blow 'cos you said so. Mmmm. Tell the sun not to shine. Not to get up this time. No no. Let it fall by the way but don't leave me where I lay down." The lyrics are good and light-hearted with a hint of humour. Madonna then sings the chorus, "Tell me love isn't true. It's just something we do. Tell me everything I'm not but please don't tell me to stop." Madonna then sings the second verse, "Tell the leaves not to turn but don't ever tell me I'll learn. No no. Take the black off the crow but don't tell me I have to go. Tell the bed not to lay. Like the open mouth of a grave. Not to stare up at me like a calf down on its knees." Madonna then sings the chorus in a cappella, before a violin plays when she sings it another time. She then sings the chorus twice more, as the beat kicks in, before she sing a section of the second verse again, and a funky instrumental starts. The beat then ends, and a wonderful and epic violin solo is left to play the song out.

The video to Don't Tell Me is wonderful. While the video isn't as good as classics like Frozen and Ray Of Light, it is definitely a contended for the best video from the Music album. We see Madonna apparently walking down a country road in the middle of the desert, but as the camera pans out it turns out that Madonna is just walking on a treadmill in a studio as a screen moves behind her. It's a clever video, and features Madonna dressed like a cowgirl with cowboys dancing around her. The idea of Cowgirl Madonna a year previously would've been laughable by many, but she did it and it was a huge fashion craze. All in all, a fantastic Madonna song with an equally wonderful video. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

A flawed but stylish adaptation of the Chester Gould comic strip by director Warren Beatty, who also stars in the title role. The minimalist plot involves a battalion of baddies who confront the intrepid detective in a series of strung-together vignettes. Al Pacino is a comedic if overblown standout as Big Boy Caprice, and Madonna simply smolders as aggressive blonde bombshell Breathless Mahoney. It matters not that the plot is Spartan, as this dazzling eye candy is much enhanced by Stephen Sondheim's songs, including the Academy Award-winning ditty, "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)." Beatty took his cue from the source material and concentrated on the relationships between these people, whether strained, romantic, or hateful. The performances are subtle and more amusing than you would expect from such a visually bold picture. Shot in bright, primary colors, this also won Oscars for Best Art/Set Direction and Makeup (for those inventively hideous criminals). Watch for well-known names, such as Dustin Hoffman and Dick Van Dyke, in cameo appearances and supporting roles. --Rochelle O'Gorman ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars the Comic Strip Detective is now the Motion Picture
In 1930s Chicago, gangsters were running things, running crime and the only man who can bring these gansters to justice is "DICK TRACY" Directed ,Produced by and starring Warren Beatty as the legendary comic strip detective hero in the yellow coat and hat that began his comic strip in 1931, starring Madonna as seductress Breathless Mahoney, Al Pacino as mob boss Big Boy Caprice, Dustin Hoffman as gangster Mumbles and Charlie Korsmo as orphan Kid(Dick Tracy, Jr.). Dick Tracy is a fun entertaining crime movie that truly brings out the 1930s and the golden age of comics. Beatty and Pacino are terrific, Pacino recieved an oscar nomination. A great detective film noir film for all ages. Very colorful setting and great makeup. The best comic strip film since "FLASH GORDON" and Superman: the Movie" a classic character in a classic film. If you want an entertaining detective film see the legendary detective of all "DICK TRACY""I'm on My Way"

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm only buying this movie to look at madonna
I mena i did enjoy this movie very much, as a kid I was taken to see it in the theatre, and I enjoyed it very much, especially seeing Madonna playing a seductres In Breathless Mahoney.
Seeing her prancing around looking the way she did, in those amazing outfits, at the height of her fame and beauty, Might not have been the best thing for a young 11 year old boys mind.
But I'm sure as hell am not complaining, then and now.
The movie is a very cute pop corn summer action flick, very nior, very hokey, and most of very enjoyable.
    And of coarse, Madonna. OUCH!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Detective Noir Film
I don't believe the reason this movie was good was because it had box office success.I don't believe this movie was good because it was complex.

Dick Tracy is like the gangster-noir films of the '30s, '40s and '50s with a heavy importance placed on the visuals. The visuals fit the events, and one gets a feeling of film noir that is totally new and relevant.Using visuals to tell the story can be more important than the plot, since the art of film deals with a visual medium.

I also don't understand how people would reject Danny Elfman's score, which is fun and seems to fit the comicbook theme and subject.Elfman's music actually goes somewhere, whereas I will never understand the greatness of, let's say, John Williams, whose music I generally reject as hollow and uneducated.

The cast is amazing, and Madonna in particular is actually good in her role as "Breathless Mahoney" contrary to the actress' awful reputation.

Movies should be judged on their CINEMATIC QUALITIES.If the film were not a film, but a book instead, people's hard criticisms might be justified. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is Where It All Began!
To celebrate Madonna's 20th anniversary as the Queen of Pop, I have decided to try and review every Madonna single ever released. It'll be a long process, but I'll be very happy if I achieve it. I'm going to review them in order of their UK release, beginning with this - Holiday...

"Holiday" is perhaps one of the best known dance/pop party songs ever. The song has truly reached anthemic status, and charted at No.5 on VH1 UK's 100 Greatest Floorfillers. Released way back in January 1984, Holiday peaked at No.6 in the UK where it spent 11 weeks on the chart. The song has been re-issued twice in August 1985 and June 1991, peaking at No.2 and No.5 respectively.

Holiday is such a popular song because of its happy and trouble-free lyrics. The way the uptempo and light beat is arranged is instantly recognisable, and Madonna's vocals are totally unique to anything she has ever done before. The song begins with Madonna's proud statement "Holiday!" before going on to proclaim "Celebrate!" Simple yet effective, the song strikes a chord with every listener. The pure dizzy fun doesn't stop, as the song passes through many minutes without ever becoming boring. "If we took a holiday! Took some time to celebrate! Just one day out of life! It would be! It would be so nice!" croons Madge on one of the song's most famous verses. The repetition of lines never gets boring, and the rather long instrumentals between choruses and verses enhance the quality of the overall production factor.

Holiday is always a favourite amongst fans at Madonna's concerts. One has to witness her performance of it on her 1990 Blonde Ambition World Tour to truly appreciate the respect that this song has achieved. Make no mistake, this is a true classic.

4-0 out of 5 stars two good songs
Holiday was the jam back in the day.Lucky Star is cool but i prefer Holiday better overall.the production&vibe Reflects the time period really well.these tracks have held up still. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars When Madonna was prettier than ever!
This video is very nice to watch. It has Madonnas first videos made for her early biggest hits. This video is enjoyable because you get to see Madonna during the early eighties when she was still fresh, young, and innocent. This video takes you back in time when Madonna was more feminine and prettier than what she is now. This is a video for any hardcore Madonna fan of her early eighties look.Seeing this video in a way makes you miss the old Madonna from the Like A Virgin days.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Compilation of Madonna's Videos
With her rising popularity and heavy radio play during the mid 1980s, Madonna was bound to have her earliest videos compiled on videocassette. The first in a series of many compilations "Madonna: Madonna" contains four videos that were released on her self titled debut album and sophomore album, "Like A Virgin." Starting with the classic "Borderline" (which features a yet unknown actor by the name of John Leguizamo in a non-speaking extra role; keep an eye out for him in the breakdancing scenes) the tape continues with three other Madonna video gems, "Lucky Star," "Like a Virgin" and the hard to find video "Burning Up," which only can be found on this videocassette (it was not included in Madonna's "Immaculate Collection" compilation).

"Burning Up," which is still one of my favorite Madonna songs, is a creative video, incorporating clever set designs and lightning. The "Lucky Star" video which features a version of the song that was previously unavailable (now available on Madonna's remastered "Madonna" album that was released during the summer of 2001) also differs from the version found on her "Immaculate Collection" DVD.

Now, I only wish both videos were available on DVD with many of her other videos not found on other compilations (e.g., "I Want You," "Into the Groove," etc.) However, if you are a true Madonna fan and need to have every one of her videos, than this tape is necessary. If not, let's wait and see if the "Burning Up" video will be re-released on DVD as a single or on a compilation in the future.

Overall, a great tape full of memories and the makings of one of the Twentieth Century's greatest stars.

    5-0 out of 5 stars 4 80s FANS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    2. LUCKY STAR (REMIX VERSION) (1984)
    3. BORDERLINE (1984)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastics Remixes by Victor Calderone
Beautiful Stranger is the theme song from the movie Austin Powers The Spy who shagged me, this singles contains 3 tracks, the first one is the lp version from the soundtrack, that you can only have it there, is not in any other studio Madonna Album.
The real jewels here are the two mixes by Victor Calderone (Calderone Club Mix 10.12 and Calderone Radio Mix 4.03), they made tghe song sound more of a dance one and I bet you that you will not be able to have your feet still, they will dance by themselves, great cd is an import but worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars madonna is cool

The original version is very cool and her voice is fresh and naked here without any effects on her voice. The Calderone mix is awesome with groovy bassline and twisted effects on her voice. The radio and the dub is okay too. I wish there was more mixes on this CD, but these will do just fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic, Feel-Good Pop Classic!
After the five amazing singles that were released from the stunning album Ray Of Light, many were left wondering what Madonna could do to possibly top - or even equal - the success of this. She gave them their answer in June 1999, when she released the superb song Beautiful Stranger. The song was the main theme to the new Austin Powers movie, "Austin Powers II: The Spy Who Shagged Me." The song was an absolutely huge hit all over the world, and peaked at No.2 in the UK. The song spent a very impressive 16 weeks on the singles chart - Madonna's longest consecutive stay on the UK chart since 1984, when Like A Virgin spent 18 weeks on the chart.

Beautiful Stranger begins straight away with a bold and brashy beat. The melody of the tune is very famous and you just enter party-mode straight away. You've heard the song a million times before, but you carry on listening because it's just so damn addictive! Madonna then starts singing the first verse, "Haven't we met? You're some kind of beautiful stranger. You could be good for me. I've had the taste for danger. If I'm smart then I'll run away, but I'm not so I guess I'll stay. Heaven forbid. I take my chance on a beautiful stranger." A short and sweet verse, which is followed up by the brilliant bridge, where Madonna sings, "I looked into your eyes and my world came tumbling down. You're the devil in disguise. That's why I'm singing this song." The chorus then starts as the beat rises and Madonna sings, "To know you is to love. You're everywhere I go. And everybody knows. To love you is to be part of you. I paid for you with tears. And swallow all my pride. Da (x13) Beautiful stranger! Da (x13) Beautiful Stranger!" The song then goes down, with the psychedelic beat twisting around the arrangement in the background, and Madonna sings the second verse, "If I'm smart then I'll run away, but I'm not so I guess I'll stay. Haven't you heard? I fell in love with the beautiful stranger." Madonna then sings the second bridge, which is slightly altered to sound like, "I looked into your face. My heart was dancing all over the place. I'd like to change my point of view. If I could just forget about you." Madonna then repeats the chorus before a corny but very funny flute plays the song out.

The video to Beautiful Stranger stars Mike Myers as Austin Powers, because - obviously - the song is from the film. It begins with Austin in his "Shaguar" driving along a country road, when he receives a video message from Basil. He warns Austin about a "Master of Disguise," Madonna herself. He warns Austin that she's seductively dangerous, and Austin thinks he can handle himself - that is, until he tracks down the foxy little minx herself! Madonna is performing this song in a small green club. Everyone's dancing including Austin, who totally falls for the icon as soon as he lays eyes on her. He tries to attract her attention by dancing in front of her and miming phrases such as "Call me!" It really is a hilarious video, and Austin's vivid imagination offers cheeky insights into what he'd be doing if he was with Madonna in his car. It's just a feel-good, dance along happy video! All in all, Beautiful Stranger is definitely one of Madonna's best ever hit singles, and it's a crime that it didn't make it to No.1 in the UK. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I think it is a great idea!
It is a great idea to put missing tracks from The Immaculate Collcetion onto one little disc! They put the full album version of Holiday on it, and then hits True Blue, Who's That Girl and Causin' A Commotion! What a wonderful idea! Kylie Minogue should do this for all the tracks that did not make her Ultimate Kylie album (10 tracks or so)

5-0 out of 5 stars Immaculate Collection Part II
Admit it, you always feel like there were some sonds left out from the Immaculate Collection CD, songs that were as much a success as the one included there, well there is when it comes this mini collection title The Holiday Collection with 4 tracks (1 included in that IC) that are part of the Madonna's success discography.

    1. Holiday.- Signature song, you fell happy everytime you heart it.
    2. True Blue.- A signature Madonna ballad that reached #3.
    3. Who's that Girl.- The title-track from that album, reached #1.
    4. Causing a Commotion.- A personal favorite also from the Who's that Girl Soundtrack, reached #2.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for your Madonna collection!
