The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families by Sandra Merrill Covey, Stephen R. Covey Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 October, 1998) list price: $15.00 -- our price: $10.20 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review "What is 'effectiveness' in a family?" asks author Steven R. Covey. He promptly answers with four words: "a beautiful family culture." Building this culture is the primary theme of Covey's parenting guide, a manual based on concepts introduced in his blockbuster, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Covey, a New-Age business guru and leadership authority, has consulted with the world's top corporate and political leaders, but closer to home he is the father of nine children. Here, Covey reinterprets each of his now famous "habits" (Habit 1: Be Proactive, Habit 4: Think Win-Win, Habit 6: Synergize) to apply to parenting and family-life issues. Covey suggests writing a family mission statement, implementing special family times and "one-on-ones," holding regular family meetings, and making the commitment to move from "me" to "we" as techniques to improve family effectiveness. Covey is a brilliant storyteller. By weaving the voices and anecdotes of his wife and children with his own inspirational and informative stories, exercises, and parables, he has created a book with something for all parents interested in enhancing the strength and beauty of their own families. --Ericka Lutz ... Taking Charge of Your Fertility: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health (Revised Edition) by Toni Weschler Average Customer Review: Paperback (13 November, 2001) list price: $23.95 -- our price: $16.29 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This comprehensive book explains in lucid, assured terms how to practice the fertility awareness method (FAM), a natural, scientifically proven but little-known form of birth control (which is not to be confused with the woefully ineffective "rhythm" method). Author Toni Weschler has been teaching fertility awareness for almost 20 years, and it's only just now gaining in popularity. As the book explains, by using simple fertility signs including peaks in morning body temperature and changes in cervical position and cervical mucus, it's possible to determine when ovulation is taking place. Fertility awareness is therefore useful for not only couples who are trying to conceive, but for those who are aiming to avoid pregnancy without the use of chemical contraceptives. It will be of special interest to those women who have suffered from infertility; many FAM practitioners have told the author that by filling in the detailed charts in the book, they've realized that they were chronically miscarrying, even when their doctors told them they weren't conceiving at all. As the book explains, by charting body temperature, it's simple to tell when pregnancy has occurred--and when there's danger of miscarriage. Taking Charge of Your Fertility also explains how to choose the sex of your baby by timing intercourse according to certain fertility signs. It also features thorough, easy-to-understand explanations of hormones, the menstrual cycle, and menopause, along with fertility tests and treatments and their long- and short-term side effects, plus a topnotch resource section. Recommended for any woman who wants to better understand her body. --Erica Jorgensen ... Read more Reviews (695)

The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate by Gary Chapman Average Customer Review: Paperback (June, 1996) list price: $13.99 -- our price: $11.19 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Unhappiness in marriage often has a simple root cause: we speak different love languages, believes Dr. Gary Chapman. While working as a marriage counselor for more than 30 years, he identified five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. In a friendly, often humorous style, he unpacks each one. Some husbands or wives may crave focused attention; another needs regular praise. Gifts are highly important to one spouse, while another sees fixing a leaky faucet, ironing a shirt, or cooking a meal as filling their "love tank." Some partners might find physical touch makes them feel valued: holding hands, giving back rubs, and sexual contact. Chapman illustrates each love language with real-life examples from his counseling practice. How do you discover your spouses and your own love language? Chapmans short questionnaires are one of several ways to find out. Throughout the book, he also includes application questions that can be answered more extensively in the beautifully detailed companion leather journal (an exclusive Amazon.com set). Each section of the journal corresponds with a chapter from the book, offering opportunities for deeper reflection on your marriage. Although some readers may find choosing to love a spouse that they no longer even like hoping the feelings of affection will follow later a difficult concept to swallow, Chapman promises that the results will be worth the effort."Love is a choice," says Chapman. "And either partner can start the process today." --Cindy Crosby. This text refers to the Amazon.com Exclusive Journal & Paperback Book Set. ... Read more Reviews (232)

Daddy and Me by Karen Katz Average Customer Review: Board book (01 May, 2003) list price: $5.99 -- our price: $5.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Karen Katz whips together another fun, colorful lift-the-flap adventure, in the form of a wee home-improvement project between a father and child. Displaying the same cheerful delivery and bright artwork that Katz used in Where Is Baby's Belly Button? and Toes, Ears, and Nose!, Daddy and Me tells its tale with a simple setup and sturdy flaps to lift on each two-page spread: "I'm helping Dad make something special. First we saw the wood. Where is Daddy's saw?" Two easy-to-grab flaps open to reveal that Daddy's saw is "In the... closet." Pencils, nails, screwdrivers, and a paintbrush are likewise hiding out around the shop, and it's up to Daddy's cherubic, gender-indeterminate little helper to track them down--with some help from the reader, of course, lifting up work gloves, a tool box lid, some paint cans, and a newspaper. We finally find out what project Daddy had planned (which also explains why a cute chestnut puppy has been helping the helper all along): "At last we are finished. We made a doghouse for Henry! But where is Henry?" Readers get to lift one more flap to find out. (Baby to preschool) --Paul Hughes ... Read more Reviews (9)

All-of-a-kind Family by Sydney Taylor, Helen John Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 December, 1984) list price: $5.50 -- our price: $5.50 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review There's something to be said for a book that makes you wish you'd been part of a poor immigrant family living in New York's upper east side on the eve of World War I. Sydney Taylor's time-honored classic does just that. Life is rich for the five mischievous girls in the family. They find adventure in visiting the library, going to market with Mama, even dusting the front room. Young readers who have never shared a bedroom with four siblings, with no television in sight, will vicariously experience the simple, old-fashioned pleasures of talk, make-believe, and pilfered penny candy. The family's Jewish faith strengthens their ties to each other, while providing still more excitement and opportunity for mischief. Readers unfamiliar with Judaism will learn with the girls during each beautifully depicted holiday. This lively family, subject of four more "all-of-a- kind" books, is full of unique characters, all deftly illustrated by Helen John. Taylor based the stories on her own childhood family, and the true-life quality of her writing gives this classic its page-turning appeal. (Ages 9 to 12) ... Read more Reviews (68)

American Medical Association Family Medical Guide by Charles B. Clayman Average Customer Review: Hardcover (06 September, 1994) list price: $39.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (14)
I should preface the rest of my review by saying that I have a definite interest in medicine, and planned to become a paramedic.I did take my EMT-B certification (Emergency Medical Techinician-Basic) a few years ago, and this book was one of my resources for studying for tests and answering homework questions. So, I have a clear INTEREST in all things medical, and really enjoy just browsing through this book. I find that I look things up in this book at least once a week. Sometimes I'll hear the name of a disease or illness on TV and out of curiousity to know more, I'll look it up.If I have a strange symptom, I'll look that up.I am single with no children, but this book would be an invaluable first-aid resource for a family with children or for anyone taking care of a sick or elderly friend or family member. My favorite aspects of this book are the glossary of medical terms, the very complete and easy-to-use index, and the medication section.Several times I have looked up a medication to determine if it is safe to take with other medications, or to see if side effects are normal. I think every household should have a copy of this book. Most of the information is timeless and very informative. ... Read more Isbn: 0679412905 |

What to Expect When You're Expecting, Third Edition by Heidi Murkoff Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 April, 2002) list price: $13.95 -- our price: $11.16 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Eighteen years after it first hit the shelves and having sold more than 10 million copies, What to Expect When You're Expecting is still on nearly every mother-to-be's reading list. This completely revised and updated edition is packed with answers to hundreds of questions and worries expectant parents may have. The information is presented in a month-by-month format starting with planning a pregnancy and choosing a practitioner, and follows through to six weeks after delivery. Each chapter begins with an explanation of what to expect at a particular month's prenatal visit and a brief description of how mom and baby are growing and changing before getting to the heart of the matter: What You May Be Concerned About. Topics are presented as questions ranging from "Should I be taking vitamins?" to "What if I forget everything I learn in childbirth education class?" to "Will I be able to breastfeed?" The answers are generally reassuring and provide enough information to soothe a worried mom between prenatal visits. Despite the reassuring answers, however, the sheer volume of worries discussed may alarm an otherwise calm mom-to-be. The book also features a complete nutrition plan (though many women may find it difficult to follow), a special chapter just for expectant dads, and extensive information about dealing with minor illnesses, chronic conditions, and pregnancy complications. What to Expect has guided countless women through their pregnancies and makes an informative addition to the mainstream pregnancy and childbirth bookshelf. --Jennifer Lindsay ...
