    4-0 out of 5 stars Mom's Family 2004 Calendar
The Calendar is great for families! The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it would be really nice if the calendar would start at the beginning of the school year instead of January. There is another Mom's calendar out there called Mom's Plan-It that starts in August.I actually prefer the Mom's Family format because you only have to write the family member names once per page, but I like the fact that the Mom's Plan-It Calendar is 17 months.

Maybe it's just me, but with the dates of the month printed vertically down the side of the page, I have a hard time telling where we are in the month at a glance. I prefer the conventional calendar layout. ... Read more

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families

    Editorial Review

"What is 'effectiveness' in a family?" asks author Steven R. Covey. He promptly answers with four words: "a beautiful family culture." Building this culture is the primary theme of Covey's parenting guide, a manual based on concepts introduced in his blockbuster, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Covey, a New-Age business guru and leadership authority, has consulted with the world's top corporate and political leaders, but closer to home he is the father of nine children. Here, Covey reinterprets each of his now famous "habits" (Habit 1: Be Proactive, Habit 4: Think Win-Win, Habit 6: Synergize) to apply to parenting and family-life issues. Covey suggests writing a family mission statement, implementing special family times and "one-on-ones," holding regular family meetings, and making the commitment to move from "me" to "we" as techniques to improve family effectiveness. Covey is a brilliant storyteller. By weaving the voices and anecdotes of his wife and children with his own inspirational and informative stories, exercises, and parables, he has created a book with something for all parents interested in enhancing the strength and beauty of their own families. --Ericka Lutz ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Family Lessons From "The Inside Out "

Covey encourages every parent to do some soul searching to become aware as to what really is priority in life. Then, he suggests we put "first things first." I believe that most parents would admit that they do wish to have "FAMILY" comes first--above all else. But, in today's busy, often stressful daily routine of life, accomplishing that goal is often "easier said than done". Covey clearly points out the essentials...such as establishing effective communication lines through family meetings and one-on-one talks with the kids. He makes so much sense as he describes with personal anecdotes how love, values, morality, and empathy for others is a process of teaching and learning from "the inside out"...in other words from within the family rippling out to society at large. He talks about establishing a family mission statement and helps to direct moms and dads to find the courage and the skills to make changes for the better. Covey's book creates the mindset and the outline. If you have young kids like me, I recommend a perfect compliment 'how-to book' with Covey's ... called "THE POCKET PARENT." This handy book, written for parents of 2-6 year olds, is loaded with compassion and humor along with over one thousand tips and skills to try. It literally trouble-shoots many of the problem behaviors we all deal with daily-such as Angry outbursts, Bedtime, Mealtime and Clean-up refusals, Tantrums, Disrespectful attitude, the "Gimmes", Morning "Crazies", Sibling fights, Whining and many more. These 2 books (one more theoretical, the other more "hands on" practical) have changed our lives. We now have more peace and cooperation in our family---and that gives us more time to enjoy each other. Consider both books for your home reference library.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Too Sappy For Me
While this book had some good insights and "a-ha" moments, it was too sappy for me to get past the third chapter.I enjoy a good metaphor for life as much as the next person, but there were so many in this book that the author's real messages got clouded by them.I much prefered Family First by Dr. Phil McGraw.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful information
This book is informative and would make a great resource for any family eager to improve their communication and family involvement.Gets a bit wordy after awhile and there are lots of testimonials touting Covey's other books, but overall this was a well-written & informative read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Gift
I gave these books to my mother and my husbands mother for mothers day! They are a great way to leave a part of themsleves to my little girl! My next step is to give one to my grandmother! They had such amazing lives, immagrating, witnessing tidal waves, rasing 17 children alone when your husband dies!! I never want these stories to be forgotten! This is how not to forget!

3-0 out of 5 stars Suitable for more "traditional" grandmother
I bought this book as a christmas present for my grandmother on my father's side. However, I ended up giving it to my grandmother on my mother's side because my father's parents are divorced. This book is something that my grandmother would have enjoyed, had it not had such a focus on her dating, engagement, marriage, ect.Questions like, "What did he say when he purposed?" and "What would Grandpa want to tell the grandchild?"could be very painful to recall and possibly unanswerable. It's a great gift for my OTHER grandmother, though.I wouldn't reccomend it for the non-traditional situation. Three stars because, I almost was unable to give it as a gift at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure for Every Grandchild Who Loves their Grandma
I bought this book in 1983 for my Grandma to fill out for me. Now that she has passed on, this book is a priceless, timeless gem, and a gift to me, as well as to my own children to pass down the stories, family tree, insight into the times when my Grandma was young, and is a great source of comfort for me.

If you are a Grandma, buy the book and give this gift to your grandchild. It will make so much of a difference. It is a treasure that keeps alive everything you loved, what happened during each stage of your life, and will be treasured by any grandchild who treasures you.
I HIGHLY Recommended this book for its timeless comfort and memories. It is a genuine gift in all regards. Barbara Rose, author of`Individual Power' and `If God Was Like Man' ... Read more

Taking Charge of Your Fertility: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health (Revised Edition)

    Editorial Review

This comprehensive book explains in lucid, assured terms how to practice the fertility awareness method (FAM), a natural, scientifically proven but little-known form of birth control (which is not to be confused with the woefully ineffective "rhythm" method). Author Toni Weschler has been teaching fertility awareness for almost 20 years, and it's only just now gaining in popularity. As the book explains, by using simple fertility signs including peaks in morning body temperature and changes in cervical position and cervical mucus, it's possible to determine when ovulation is taking place. Fertility awareness is therefore useful for not only couples who are trying to conceive, but for those who are aiming to avoid pregnancy without the use of chemical contraceptives. It will be of special interest to those women who have suffered from infertility; many FAM practitioners have told the author that by filling in the detailed charts in the book, they've realized that they were chronically miscarrying, even when their doctors told them they weren't conceiving at all. As the book explains, by charting body temperature, it's simple to tell when pregnancy has occurred--and when there's danger of miscarriage. Taking Charge of Your Fertility also explains how to choose the sex of your baby by timing intercourse according to certain fertility signs. It also features thorough, easy-to-understand explanations of hormones, the menstrual cycle, and menopause, along with fertility tests and treatments and their long- and short-term side effects, plus a topnotch resource section. Recommended for any woman who wants to better understand her body. --Erica Jorgensen ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT INFORMATION BUT BE WARNED!!!
LOVED this book!I read it over 2 years ago and have recommended it all the time. But here is a WARNING for those pregnancy avoiders -- the book claims that sperm can last in the female body only 5 days, except in a few rare cases;well I guess I am one of those rare cases.I concieved nearly 7 days AFTER intercourse.I was shocked, but happy since we weren't actively avoiding. However, I was curious how I had gotten pregnant since I was charting and the dates didn't add up.I decided to research this information on my own. After an extensive search on google, I found NUMEROUS reports that have shown SPERM CAN SURVIVE 7 DAYS in the female body!!So keep this in mind any females with extremely fertile quality cervical fluid lasting many days each month.

5-0 out of 5 stars invaluable
This book is amazing. It put me in tune with body and made me realise that i am not abnormal. It helped me understand the obvious signs my body puts out each month and made it a lot easier to estimate the most likely time for ovulation. It is detailed and answered all my questions.Without it I would be lost. I recommend it to all women.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource!
I love this book!!Toni Weschler has written a treasure trove of useful information for all women, both those who want to become pregnant and those who don't. Like so many who wrote before me, I thought I knew how my body works, but after reading this, I realized I really knew so little (and was misinformed about so much!) I never thought I'd say this, but menstrual cycles are really fascinanting! This is the best thing you'll ever read about them.

The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate

    Editorial Review

Unhappiness in marriage often has a simple root cause: we speak different love languages, believes Dr. Gary Chapman. While working as a marriage counselor for more than 30 years, he identified five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. In a friendly, often humorous style, he unpacks each one. Some husbands or wives may crave focused attention; another needs regular praise. Gifts are highly important to one spouse, while another sees fixing a leaky faucet, ironing a shirt, or cooking a meal as filling their "love tank." Some partners might find physical touch makes them feel valued: holding hands, giving back rubs, and sexual contact. Chapman illustrates each love language with real-life examples from his counseling practice.

How do you discover your spouse’s – and your own – love language? Chapman’s short questionnaires are one of several ways to find out. Throughout the book, he also includes application questions that can be answered more extensively in the beautifully detailed companion leather journal (an exclusive Amazon.com set). Each section of the journal corresponds with a chapter from the book, offering opportunities for deeper reflection on your marriage.

Although some readers may find choosing to love a spouse that they no longer even like –hoping the feelings of affection will follow later– a difficult concept to swallow, Chapman promises that the results will be worth the effort."Love is a choice," says Chapman. "And either partner can start the process today." --Cindy Crosby. This text refers to the Amazon.com Exclusive Journal & Paperback Book Set. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for every relationship
You will never know how much you don't know about your partner, friend, or family member until you read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Languages?
I was very skeptical about this book at first. Now I must admit that it is very insightful and worth reading. It is amazing how much little things can mean when it is done in someone's love language.Learning from this book takes a lot of "work" out of relationships and gives practical advice how to discover and speak others Love Language to make them KNOW that they are special to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alive In Love
I applaud "The Five Love Languages".After reading this book, I am able to identify my personal love language as well as see the love language that my significant other speaks.I can see how couples may not connect, or may not feel heard or loved by their partners because they may not speak the same love language.Gary Chapman's observations and suggestions open a new world of communication and offer new ways to express love that will allow my partner and I to both feel truly loved. I find it interesting that I've been assuming that my partner's emotional needs would be the same as mine.I quickly shared this new information with him and he also found it interesting.Knowing each other's love language provides us with new insight and awareness, as we make choices to express our love for each other. Not only have I gained insight with my romantic relationship, Gary Chapman's book has also provided insight with how I can express my love for my family and friends, speaking the love language that resonates with each individual.

Another book which has provided profound insight and awareness with my relationships is Ariel and Shya Kanes' "Working On Your Relationships Doesn't Work". If you like Gary Chapman's "The Five Love Languages" as I do, I highly suggest the Kanes' book. You'll discover the magic of being present in your life while experiencing satisfying and enriching relationships.Life just keeps getting better! ... Editorial Review

Karen Katz whips together another fun, colorful lift-the-flap adventure, in the form of a wee home-improvement project between a father and child.

Displaying the same cheerful delivery and bright artwork that Katz used in Where Is Baby's Belly Button? and Toes, Ears, and Nose!, Daddy and Me tells its tale with a simple setup and sturdy flaps to lift on each two-page spread: "I'm helping Dad make something special. First we saw the wood. Where is Daddy's saw?" Two easy-to-grab flaps open to reveal that Daddy's saw is "In the... closet." Pencils, nails, screwdrivers, and a paintbrush are likewise hiding out around the shop, and it's up to Daddy's cherubic, gender-indeterminate little helper to track them down--with some help from the reader, of course, lifting up work gloves, a tool box lid, some paint cans, and a newspaper.

We finally find out what project Daddy had planned (which also explains why a cute chestnut puppy has been helping the helper all along): "At last we are finished. We made a doghouse for Henry! But where is Henry?" Readers get to lift one more flap to find out. (Baby to preschool) --Paul Hughes ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best Katz Book
We own all of Karen Katz's books.Of course, with the lift and find layout, our 20 month old enjoys the interactive reading experience, but I give this book only 2 stars because there are a few things that really bug me.First, I should explain that our baby is an explorer. She is into EVERYTHING and, to keep her safe, we have tried to teach her to stay out of the garage, and especially in areas where sharp objects (such as saws, nails, etc.) might be. Sounds like common sense, yes, but I can't help but wonder what conflicting messages are sent when we sit and read a book that encourages children to use nails, saws, hammers, etc.It wouldn't have been very hard to re-word the text and emphasize that while tools and building are interesting, they should only be used if Mommy or Daddy are helping. If you are shopping for Karen Katz's books, I'd skip this one and buy any of the others, such as Where Is Baby's Belly Button (a great, five star book!) or Toes, Ears and Nose. Our daughter has loved these since she was 10 months old and they are great for babies who are learning body parts. I think there is a boxed set, called Baby's Box of Fun that includes 3 of Karen Katz best. So, if you are considering any of her books, I'd recommend starting there!Happy reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it and will always hold a special place in our hearts.
I got this for my son when he was just 14 months. He's now 18 months and still love the book. He always get excited whenever I showed him the books. He would right away sit on the loveseat and would even leave a space for me to sit at. He's very fascinated with the flaps. He just can't wait for the next page to come so he could see under the flaps. There's always a lot of giggles and smiles on his face on every turn of the page. We both love this. My husband would read this to him over and over while I clean up after dinner. This never flunk us.It keeps him entertained for hours.I am also glad I bought this for it helped develop my son's interest to books. This is one of the first set of books I bought for him. It's a best way to let kids know that there are a lot of things they can do with their dads too.I believe this is one of his favorites. He just can't let go of Katz' creations.

    Editorial Review

In their excellent (and hefty) resource guide, The Baby Book, attachment parenting specialists William Sears and Martha Sears have provided new parents with their approach to every aspect of baby care basics, from newborns to toddlers. Attachment parenting is a gentle, reasonable approach to parenting that stresses bonding with your baby, responding to her cues, breastfeeding, "wearing" your baby, and sharing sleep with your child. For those parents who worry about negative effects of this attention, the Sears say, "Spoiling is what happens when you leave something (or some person) alone on the shelf--it spoils." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for our family
As a first time mom, I found this book to be extremely helpful. However, one needs to take into consideration that every family is different and every child is different. Dr. Sears takes a very sensitive, natural approach to child rearing; almost old fashioned if you will. This may not be the style or approach that is appropriate for your families needs. It worked for my family though.

Dr. Sears strongly advocates attachment parenting. By this, the parents become very bonded to their child via using slings to carry them around in, co-sleeping, and being sensitive to the child's needs. My husband and I have done all of this and we have the happiest toddler you could ever imagine. People are constantly commenting on how happy and approachable he is. I am so intoned with my son that I hardly ever need to reprimand him; I just need to give him the look and he knows I mean business. My son never went through separation anxiety or stranger anxiety and I think this is because he gets his fill of us so much he doesn't feel that anxiety.

I feel this book encourages a very sensitive approach towards childrearing that just felt right for my husband and I. Several of the other baby books out there like, `What to expect the first year' just took a very cold and calloused approach in my opinion.

As far as a few of the comments I've read stating that this book is very bias towards the mother, I say that is nonsense. The only thing that this book states that the mother can do that the father can't is breast feed. Every single thing in this book can just as easily be done by the mother as well as the father.

Again, every baby is different and every household has different needs. This book worked perfectly for my son's needs and he's a happy, outgoing, smart toddler today because of these methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where's the review for the new edition?
I loved one of the previous editions of this book and used it as the main reference for parenting my baby. Now that Dr. and Mrs. Searses two oldest boys are pediatritians and are co-authors (in fact James is listed first) in the newest edition of this book, I would like to hear about that. Even the editorial review offered by Amazon refers to previous editions, yet they picture and give facts for the newest release. Just an observation I would like to see corrected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Parenting Produces Healthy Adults
Don't listen to those nonsense reviews below. This book was a lifesaver for me when my child was a newborn. It taught me all the things that should have been passed down throughout the generations, but our culture has thrown out the window. My baby had a dairy sensitvity which made him very high-needs.If it hadn't been for The Baby Book I would have lost my mind and not have bonded with my baby so well.

The book gives great suggestions for how mother and father can bond with the baby. Now wonder Dr. Phil HIGHLY RECOMMENDED this book on his show this year and said keep it handy and refer to it often. If only we had more pediatricians like Dr. Sears................. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

There's something to be said for a book that makes you wish you'd been part of a poor immigrant family living in New York's upper east side on the eve of World War I. Sydney Taylor's time-honored classic does just that. Life is rich for the five mischievous girls in the family. They find adventure in visiting the library, going to market with Mama, even dusting the front room. Young readers who have never shared a bedroom with four siblings, with no television in sight, will vicariously experience the simple, old-fashioned pleasures of talk, make-believe, and pilfered penny candy. The family's Jewish faith strengthens their ties to each other, while providing still more excitement and opportunity for mischief. Readers unfamiliar with Judaism will learn with the girls during each beautifully depicted holiday. This lively family, subject of four more "all-of-a- kind" books, is full of unique characters, all deftly illustrated by Helen John. Taylor based the stories on her own childhood family, and the true-life quality of her writing gives this classic its page-turning appeal. (Ages 9 to 12) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Important Reminder About A Stepfamily's Balancing Act
The authors identify the many issues that stand in the way of a couple's happiness in blended families--intrusive ex-spouses, difficult stepchildren, a parent's close relationship to his or her biological children, to name just a few. Wisdom and Green constantly encourage readers to nurture the "stepcouple" relationship in the face of these challenges, and provide practical advice about how to do it. The tone is authoritative and hopeful, and the book includes interesting anecdotes from anonymous stepfamily members. "Stepcoupling" is a very useful and well-organized book that will help stepparents and their spouses grapple with many stepfamily challenges. As a parent in a family with "his," "hers" and "ours" kids, I personally found the book both inspiring and overwhelming. It's an important reminder about how hard we must all work in blended families to balance everyone's interests and needs.

2-0 out of 5 stars readable, good introduction - and lacks key realities
I have specialized in providing professional education and therapy to stepfamilies since 1981. I have been a stepfamily researcher since 1979, a stepgrandson, stepson, ex-stepfather, and stepbrother, an invited Board member of the Stepfamily Association of America, a contributing editor to 'Your Stepfamily Online,' and the author of six family-relations books focused on high-nurturance relationships and families.

I recommend 'Stepcoupling' to readers who want an interesting, readable, well-organized, well-illustrated overview of common *surface* stepfamily stressors. I do NOT recommend this book to people who seek to avoid or resolve the common *core* problems that cause most stepfamily (remarital and co-parenting) stress: See...

    http://sfhelp.org/10/problems.htm

The authors are a veteran therapist and writer, and seasoned stepfamily co-parents. However - like most lay and clinical stepfamily authors (I have read over 350 books and articles since 1979) - Wisdom and Green do not acknowledge or examine why most readers will be unable to follow their 'common sense' suggestions - e.g. '...you must figure out how to make everyone feel like an insider' (p. 69) ; '...learn to let go of what you can't have and appreciate what you do have' (p. 159); '...set out to understand and support your partner' (p. 222).

There is value in this upbeat book for stepfamily newbies and general students. However, its practical (problem-solving and avoiding) value is severely limited by major omissions including:

    1) mates' and ex-mates' significant psychological wounds;

    2) blocked grief in adults and kids, and how identify and to reduce it;

    3) mates' and ex-mates' unawareness of five key topics: (a) human personality formation and function, (b) high-nurturance families and relationships, (c) effective communication skills, (d) healthy 3-level grief, and (e) stepfamily realities and norms.

    4) needy, love-struck, unaware partners choosing the wrong people to re/wed, for the wrong reasons, at the wrong time; and...

    5) little effective stepfamily help (classes, counseling, support groups) available in most communities and the media.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Advice for Building a Blended Family Marriage
In "Stepcoupling: Creating and Sustaining a Strong Marriage in Today's Blended Family," Susan Wisdom and Jennifer Green focus on strengthening the bond between spouses after the newlywed reverie has worn off and they wake up after the honeymoon to find themselves in a stepfamily. They encourage newly-married couples to focus on their relationship and carve out couple time. They also urge couples to draw boundaries and find one-on-one time to spend with the kids. Real stepfamily situations are considered and discussed by the authors and provide practical advice to thorny situations. Unlike a lot of self-help books, the authors realize that one standard answer doesn't always work in every situation and they recommend a variety of options for some situations. Questions guide the reader to ponder his/her own situation but without forcing you to stop turning pages for too long. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Breezy and fun yet deep and meaningful.
Meg Cox's latest book is a winner! Culling from interviews with families nationwide and from her own astute observations, Cox shows us how rituals can strengthen our family bonds, can help to ground us (especially helpful in such uncertain times as these have been) and can provide us with meaningful memories. Just as rituals add pizazz to daily life, Cox's book brings a fresh and vigorous perspective to the body of literature on the subject of tradition.Brimming with stories and tips, wit and wisdom as well as colorful illustrations, this book is tantamount to the Whole Earth Catalog of rituals.A creative way to teach good values.

5-0 out of 5 stars a joyfull and insightful reading experience!
This book of new family traditions is so reader-friendly and so comfortable to pick up and browse that I can hardly get my copy out of the hands of my co-workers...The presentation and style are perfect for the topic and the information presented is easy to digest and creative enough to encourage our own ideas on the topic. This book is ideal for new parents but even us older parents of teenagers. This should be on the bookshelf of every one who cares about family or has one and wants to celebrate that special and loving relationship! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars indispensible
The first night after my wife an I read this book, our 3 month old slept 12 hours straight through the night. Before that night, I thought we had a very fussy baby. Not every baby will have these same results, because every baby is different, and the book addresses that.It made us feel normal when our baby was fussy. This is an indispensable book, buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps disorganized, but the info is essential
This book was recommended to us by several friends when we were expecting our first child, and we now give it as a gift to all of our first-time expectant friends. It explains how proper, restful, scheduled sleep is as essential to your child as food, water, and other care, and how many "behavior" problems - tantrums, fussiness, hyperactivity, "difficult" children etc. - are often actually a result of sleep-deprivation.

There's lots in here new parents might not automatically figure out on their own, like the fact that sleep deprivation in children leads to MORE hyperactivity, not to sleepiness and a desire to go to bed. Another interesting fact is that wake-up time is generally biologically programmed, so if you keep your child up late to get them to sleep in it probably won't really work out, and you're just depriving them of needed sleep.

Our son is now 2 1/2, and throughout his life we have applied theprinciples of HSHHC and it has paid off tremendously. He's a great sleeper, a happy, bright child who loves to explore and challenge but who also follows discipline, and we have never had trouble with him getting out of his bed at night or at naps, refusing to sleep in his own bed, or any of the other problems many other parents face. And there was MINIMUM crying-it-out involved, honest! Our friends who've used the book have had similar experiences. We're now re-reading it in preparation for baby #2.

The one caveat - it's admittedly not the best-organized book in the world, but it's is SO worth it to read it anyway. Good luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for a sleep-deprived mom.
I bought this book when my three-month old decided that sleep was something he was not going to do anymore. Like the other readers, I appreciated the emphasis on the importance of sleep, but what mom doesn't know that already?

The book was completely scattered and unorganized, and I actually found several very contradictory statements.I just felt like I was reading the ramblings of a very educated sleep-cycle expert, but I didn't feel as though much of the information translated well into real life. What sleep-deprived parents have the time and energy to dig through a 500 page rambling on the importance of figuring out your child's sleep cycles?

Frankly, I think moms need to give themselves more credit. We know our child, lets just listen to our instincts and stop spending money on books from "experts".We are the experts for our children! This book just made me confused and guilt-ridden (he states that many kids with behavioral disorders are actually children whose parents have not helped them develop good sleep patterns).

If you are going to buy the book, make sure you keep the receipt. There is some good information in the book, just take a few days to dig it out of the otherwise complicated, confusing mess, and then take the book back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trusted for 19 years
I'm a 19 year old college student. When I was two years old my grandparents gave my parents a copy of the AMA Family Medical Guide. With two children and another on the way, they could easily see that this book would be used time and time again. I have early childhood memories of flipping through the pages of this book and looking at the pictures. I have later memories of flipping through the pages and reading about different conditions and diseases and general anatomy. And now, even though I dont have any children of my own, I still go back to this book to reference symptoms and facts that I hear about in day-to-day conversation. Symptom flow charts are excellent.
    Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great medical reference book
Everyone should have a medical reference book at home (especially if you have kids), and this is a good one.

There are several things that I like about the book.First, there is a "self-diagnosis" chart section in the front. If you have a bad headache, stiff neck, sick stomach, etc, you can go through the flowchart and get an idea of what might be wrong. This is not to replace a doctor's diagnosis, but it really helps me determine if I'm being overly-concerned or if I should see a doctor.I definitely use that section of the book.

There are also sections of the different systems of the body that include descriptions of diseases.A little while back I was having problems with my digestive system. It really helped to read the section on colitis and Crohn's disease to understand more about them so that when my doctor discussed them, I could better understand him.

There are also sections on First Aide, caregiving at home, selecting physicians, and even a section on terminal illness and death.Though those last few items are things we don't really want to think about, there is information about how to handle making arrangements and whatever else needs to be done.

There is also a drug dictionary in the back which can come in handy, plus a medical glossary.

Overall, I'm glad that I added this book to my library. It has an abundance of useful information about illness and medicine.I do have another medical reference guide as well, but it's not nearly this comprehensive.I think everyone should have a book like this on their shelves.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A hypochondriac's dream!
Okay, I'm not a hypochondriac, sorry. My mother purchased an earlier edition of this book, published in 1982.I had that edition until I recently ordered this one to replace it.

I should preface the rest of my review by saying that I have a definite interest in medicine, and planned to become a paramedic.I did take my EMT-B certification (Emergency Medical Techinician-Basic) a few years ago, and this book was one of my resources for studying for tests and answering homework questions. So, I have a clear INTEREST in all things medical, and really enjoy just browsing through this book.

I find that I look things up in this book at least once a week. Sometimes I'll hear the name of a disease or illness on TV and out of curiousity to know more, I'll look it up.If I have a strange symptom, I'll look that up.I am single with no children, but this book would be an invaluable first-aid resource for a family with children or for anyone taking care of a sick or elderly friend or family member.

My favorite aspects of this book are the glossary of medical terms, the very complete and easy-to-use index, and the medication section.Several times I have looked up a medication to determine if it is safe to take with other medications, or to see if side effects are normal.

I think every household should have a copy of this book. Most of the information is timeless and very informative. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I have had this book for years. I use it whenever we visit a relative that is getting up in years.I wish I had it before I lost some relatives.I pick out a chapter and write down the questions I want to ask. Then video tape with the questions as my guideline.Everyone should have this on their bookshelf and remember to use it.A friend wants to borrow mine, I am going to buy her a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A written treasure for your children and their children!
I really think every parent should take the time and find this book or any other like it and answer the questions for their children! This book helps your children get to know who you are, what your hopes, dreams, rememories of childhood homes, friends and places before they where born!

I bought a copy for my Mother and I was surprised to find out she wanted to be a teacher, not a secretary. It also gave me a chance to see my Mother as a child and things through her eyes that I never would have known!

It seems like a very thick book, but if you take 1 page a day or just a few you'll be amazed at the memories you remember and also the knowledge that your children will get to know things about you that they might not have known other wise! Definately a family treasure!

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK TO GUIDE YOU IN WRITING YOUR FAMILY HISTORY
I tell everyone I see, that is interested in preserving their family history to BUY this book.I like structure and a helping hand.To me, this is the greatest book to help a person, tell their story.I am still working my way through Bob Greene's book and typing in the answers in my computer.I call my results a "Work in Progress."I wish I would have had this guide when some of my relatives were still alive.Once again, this book is great guide, to fill out "your story" and the story of your relatives. I have give my "Work in Progress", to my two daughters, and they both cried.I was surprised by their response.Their response encourages me to continue "My Work in Progress." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR NEW PUPPY OWNERS!
This book was recommended to us by the breeder we bought our lab from and it turned out to be one of the best books we have read on dog training.Wolters does a great job of spelling out week by week and situation by situation what to do.It is also great because it tells how to incorporate your child into the training - and not many labs like to listen to children. It was great. Our dogs are so well behaved because we followed the routine set in this book.
Some are turned off because he does talk of physical punishment -but it really isn't neccessary if you follow the steps from the beginning. If you don't agree with that part, don't do it like we didn't.But the rest of the book is defenitely well worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for people who like the no violence approach!!!
I bought this book because of a recommendation of a lab breeder and hunter, along with a black lab puppy, 7 weeks old. Wolters book is based in large upon the "spank the dog the right way, and you won't have to do it again ever" approach. The book is very old fashioned, even the black and white photos from the 70's support that. Meanwhile even developmental psychology for puppies has come a long way. I could not take anything from the book because most lessons end in the recommendation that the dog needs to be spanked, hit or otherwise mistreated (how about the section where the door needs to be slammed on the dog who wants to scoot inside first???? NOT an option for us!). I know some really well behaved dogs owned by hunters who will train them by hitting them. But if you are not comfortable with that, don't buy it.
Our dog is now about 2 years old, was trained with the help of thenon violent Puppies for Dummies from Sarah Hodgson, and responds to all the hand signs, quiet voice corrections and the low voice. And all that without getting hit once. She is not hyper, but really laid back, and is not afraid of us. So you can raise a dog that has a good self esteem without being bossy, even if you don't beat sense into them!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars I was fooled by great reviews!
I bought this book to help with my then-10 week old black lab.I purchased the book based on the great reviews I saw, unfortunatley I didn't scroll down far enough to read the negative reviews.I did enjoy the preface of the book, explaining the scientific need to begin training at a precise age. There was also a strong base of positive reinforcement. But I knew I was in trouble when I got to the section on how to prevent dog-napping.The author suggests having a person, a stranger to the dog, entice the dog into their car, then throw the dog to the ground and thoroughly hit the dog.The author assures that the dog won't go into a strange car again.I'm sure!I'm also sure the dog will be terrified of any stranger - whether in a car or not! This, along with a section in which the author advocates beating the dog with a leash until they cry out, only when misbehavior occurs, of course, made me physically sick to my stomach.I threw the book in the trash, where it belongs, and hope that this review will discourage others from purchasing this out-dated book advocating hitting your dog.A better book is "Great Pets, Good Owners", by Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson. They have a great website, [website], in which trainers, vets, and behaviorists, as well as other pet owners can give advice for almost any issue. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A terribly sad story terribly written
I recommend this book anyway.I devouredA Child Called It, horrified at Dave Pelzer's personal story of abuse. This book is good, but I can only give it three stars, because of the writing style and an evasiveness of content. In this book I was looking for some answers. Not answers of fact (although those were not presented all that well either) but answers for motivations, emotions, and understanding.Pelzer should have hired a ghost writer or helper. He tries to recreate dialog and ends up sounding anachronistic.By the end of the book I had trouble with mixing up the different foster homes, and when he decided the one would be his "mother" I was surprised because I hadn't felt any of his emotions toward her.Several times I didn't understand why he was leaving a home. But even with all this, it's good enough to read, and I will go on to the third book. This would be a great book to read for those consideringfoster parenting.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
Those touched by "A CHILD CALLED IT", "NIGHTMARES ECHO", "MY FRACTURED LIFE", and "THE GLASS CASTLE" will certainly be empowered and moved by "THE LOST BOY." The human spirit is an amazing thing. All it needs is love.

this book only has about 20 crafts and almost all oif them use thread or pipe cleaners. They should have all of the supplies in the book but they make you go to the store and buy it.The crafts arenot interesting and very boring.I suggest you don't buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Family Fun is Great
I have bought Family Fun magazine for years just for their craft section. They have great crafts for all ages, many made of inexpensive and easily available materials. I have not only used the crafts with my grandkids but also use them with my Sunday School class, with an age range of 4-13 years old. Many of their crafts make easy and attractive gifts for children to give at Christmas, etc., and they have a collection of things to make for school parties.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun for beginners and more advanced
I work at a shelter for domestic violence victims including children. Many of these children have never had the opportunity to do crafts with a parent figure or go to school.Every time (and I mean every time), there was a craft class scheduled and we used something from this book in conjuction with a school lesson, the kids had a great time and learned something. They had, for the first time, something to give to their mothers for Christmas or Mother's Day.

The book is very easy to follow and I love the way it is divided up.If children who are learning challenged can do this, anyone can. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for older siblings of an adopted baby
While reading this book, it struck me that the way everything was worded, it would be a good book for a family who was adopting a new baby - there is no mention of coming home from the hospital, just that our new baby is coming home today. And the new baby certainly doesn't act like a newborn.

My one complaint is that the baby is shown bottlefeeding herself, and while most adopted babies do tend to be bottlefed (you can breastfeed an adopted baby), feeding time should be one where the parent and baby are involved together, not with the baby feeding herself. Certainly not at the age she is shown to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for young toddlers
We got this book for our 15 month old when we found out we were having another baby.He absolutely loves this book!He carries it around and even sleeps with it in his crib.Even though he's really young, he is very careful with the thin pages. This book is great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a great book for preparing child for new baby!
My son is 16 months old and he loves this book! It has been so helpful in trying to prepare him for becoming a big brother.Even though he is young, we are able to tell him about what babies can and cannot do so he will be ready when his brother arrives.I think out of all the books we bought, we will be able to reinforce more about babies with this book than any of the others.I would definitely recommend it to anyone who needs to prepare a child for a new siblings arrival! ... Editorial Review

Eighteen years after it first hit the shelves and having sold more than 10 million copies, What to Expect When You're Expecting is still on nearly every mother-to-be's reading list. This completely revised and updated edition is packed with answers to hundreds of questions and worries expectant parents may have. The information is presented in a month-by-month format starting with planning a pregnancy and choosing a practitioner, and follows through to six weeks after delivery. Each chapter begins with an explanation of what to expect at a particular month's prenatal visit and a brief description of how mom and baby are growing and changing before getting to the heart of the matter: What You May Be Concerned About. Topics are presented as questions ranging from "Should I be taking vitamins?" to "What if I forget everything I learn in childbirth education class?" to "Will I be able to breastfeed?" The answers are generally reassuring and provide enough information to soothe a worried mom between prenatal visits. Despite the reassuring answers, however, the sheer volume of worries discussed may alarm an otherwise calm mom-to-be.

The book also features a complete nutrition plan (though many women may find it difficult to follow), a special chapter just for expectant dads, and extensive information about dealing with minor illnesses, chronic conditions, and pregnancy complications. What to Expect has guided countless women through their pregnancies and makes an informative addition to the mainstream pregnancy and childbirth bookshelf. --Jennifer Lindsay ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This is the best book ever on everything you need to know when you're expecting. I couldn't be without it.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT THE GREATEST BOOK OUT THERE!!
    Hello,
This is an ok book.It is not the greatest book out there!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Read if you want pre-partum depression
If you get pregnant it's virtually impossible to avoid having this book shoved at you, as a gift, or from friends who were given an extra copy ("I know, it's awful, but I got two so I brought it over," they'll say, as though they secretly want you to share the torment.) And although you've been warned, like Pandora and her box, you'll be tempted to crack it open, and then you'll hit it again and again, like a self destructive addict.

What made it so destructive for me, was not, as it seems to be for some reviewers, the free hand with possible medical problems, which I found generally somewhat helpful, if often innacurate or incomplete, but the punitive, finger waving tone. According to Mirkoff, et al, you can have ice-cream 9 times in your pregnancy, if you MUST at all, the rest of the time you have to eat like your on one of the most rigorous diets of your life.Fun and indulgence are not part of a healthy pregnancy. It's all about constantly policing yourself.
She tells you about the weight gain schedule you should be on -- 1 pound per week -- as though not being on it guarantees a future of obesity. Women should gain 25-35 pounds, she tells you at the beginning, and if you're larger boned you'll gain towards the higher end. Fine. Then at the end of the book she tells you that if you gained 35 or more, as opposed to the 25 or less women, it will take you far longer to lose your baby weight. So big boned women take longer to lose their baby weight? Why? I'd like to see some kindof statistical back-up for this pyschologically damaging "fact." This kindof information makes you feel like it's hopeless from the start -- and it's hardly useful, since a larger women can't help gaining more unless she calorie restricts, which Murkoff forbids (although the punitive nature of her recomended diet feels like a weight loss diet).
These depressing, unsubstantiated claims are sprinkled throughout the book, which at it's core, while appearing to be objective, is guided by an oppressive "right behavior" versus "wrong behavior" morality.
She also ascribes to the school of thought that "if it might be bad for you, you shouldn't do it." Rather than the more healthy approach, in this age of excessive paranoia:"understand the medical communities claims about why something might be bad for you, and make your own decisions." For instance, she says excercising on your back is bad for you and the baby, without giving any explanation. I asked several doctors about this and they said it's a slight concern to lie on your back for hours at a time, mostly because it could cut off your circulation depending on where the baby is lying in relation to a vein that runs up your back, but it's just not a big deal to do some stomach excercises on your back, unless you find yourself getting really dizzy.
And then there's the depressing cover, with a smug-faced woman in a rocker who looks like the sort of person who turns their cheap, new, faux Victorian style sub-division house near some overdeveloped, once beautiful lake into a B & B with hideous, dust covered potpourri on the fake antique dressers, and polyester eyelet sheets. Just looking at it will make you wish you hadn't gotten pregnant in the first place. ... Read more
