5-0 out of 5 stars My number one...
It's not easy to write a book, it's even harder to write theperfect book, but Caroline did it.

For years I've bought dozens and dozens of home, garden and crafts books. Some of them are really good books, most of them are just beautiful editions with magazine like editorial content, and the smallest part of them are composed by some really, really, marvellous books.

In my large collection of home and garden books I choose"Textile Style : The Art of Using Antique and Exotic Fabrics to Decorate Your Home"as my number one book, what means the best of the bests.

Since I bought it turned the most important among the others, the most read, the most manipulated, the most talked about.

    So, I really recommend it!!!

The other books of Caroline are not pieces of art like "Textil Style" but they all show she's a very good home designer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Textile Lovers
This is a fantastic design book. Beautifully photographed and organized in a sensible and intuitive way, anyone interested in design or textiles will love it. Most of the interiors pictured are in London, and there is a bias for that quirky British "more is more" style. So it you're looking for decorating inspiration for your minimalist home this book may not be very helpful. Otherwise, it's wonderful. I find myself referring to it again and again. ... Read more

A unique book! The allure of this decorating style lies in the marriage of rustic and architectural elements with classic, traditional and elegant elements. Beautiful photographs, many of which are from Jessica McClintock's home. This one is a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photographs and Great Decorating Ideas
What a wonderful book! Both the prose and photos are terrific. The authors have truly captured the essence of New England and country life.As a new owner of one of the 25 profiled homes, I can honestly say (o.k., I am a little biased) that this is a book worth buying.SRS

4-0 out of 5 stars This book made me homesick
I was browsing among the impoverished English-language section in a local bookstore and this immediately caught my eye with both title and jacket photo. I grew up and went to college in New England and it will always be called home-thus the nostalgia. This lovely and evocative book combines photography that you can drink in (and be transported by) with a very readable text...I find very often in "coffee-table" photo books the accompanying text is either boring or excessively esoteric. This is neither. Dos Santos' impeccable technical skill is obvious, although there is a slight bias toward a stereotypical New England simple-and-spartan ethic as far as subject choice goes. Overlook it and give this book a once-through. You won't regret it. ... Read more

This book is more then just a reference guide of carpets from around theworld. It shows how carpets can be used in various interiors, from countryhouses to a city pied-a-terre.The authors go into detail about color, design, and texture and use actual interiors to show the many ways thatcarpets can be used. From the great roomsof Chatsworth, to staircases, entry halls, bedrooms in a small cottage, nothing is left to theimagination.Useful chapters include "Care & Repair" and anexcellent international directory. There are also excellent examples ofantique, traditional, and contemporary rugs from every part of the world aswell as a good section on Kilms. This book is very useful for anyone whowants to get ideas about how to use and decorate with rugs, and moreimportantly WHICH rug is best for a particular setting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great help for a 1920s duplex
This is a great read for anyone struggling with a living space thatpresents unique architectural challenges, spacing constraints, and ambitionto create an artistic and aesthetically pleasing living area. I bought thisbook while redecorating my duplex, which was built in 1926. The book wasquite helpful with such items as combining old furniture with new pieces, modern art with classic or traditional interiors, and gave me a generalsense of balance in terms of color, space and form vs. function. Specificareas it helped me with was what to do with some rather large modernpainting I had, what lamps to get with glass coffee tables, and colorschemes in older living spaces. I would recommend this book for anyonewanting an individual, artsy living area that will allow for your love ofantique, art, and unique individual pieces. There is not a lot of text, butthe photos are terrific. ... Read more

Another of Philips' beautiful French decorating books.Homes presented in this book, as with her other books are high end showing us the sumptuous fabrics, and lovely French furniture she specializes in.Homes shown are mostly mansions, not the average house. Good coffee table book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great ideas with beautiful photos!
This book is wonderful!I checked it out from the local library, but now I've got to own it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Yes indeed, do look elsewhere....
I assume that the reviewer who called this book "superb" is a friend of the authors or works for the publisher.Like so many interior design books on the market, this one has lots of gorgeous pictures of gorgeous rooms, but little that is practical in terms of execution or upkeep by real people (e.g., an entire porch done in acres and acres of draped and shirred high-end fabric). The text is mostly descriptive and doesn't say what I really want to know, like "how did they do that?" "how much did it cost?" and "who keeps it clean?"In fact, the charming cover picture notwithstanding, the rooms shown are far more often opulent than they are comfortable-looking.Do real people actually live in them or are they just designer showcase rooms?Perhaps more egregiously, this also seems to be a hastily produced book. For example, somehow the editors and authors all failed to notice a glaringly misplaced caption within the first few pages. There are lots of imprecisions in the text:commonplaces like pitched-roof spaces in attics and stained-glass family crests in Tudor-style leaded windows are described by the authors as "unusual" or "unique."Crocheted textiles are called "woven" and marble slabs are called "large bricks."I know this kind of verbal carelessness is frequently to be found in design magazines, but shouldn't the standards be higher for writing books? If, like me, you enjoy looking at pictures of creatively done rooms to steal a design idea here or there, then go to the bookstore, flip through this book, then put it back on the shelf.Anyone with the financial resources to actually recreate and maintain such rooms can presumably also afford (and will absolutely need) their own design team; they don't need this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere for style and comfort
I wonder if the other reviewer and I looked at the same book.I found the photos to be outdated. The style was a by way of the 80'sand I'm not talking cool retro. So, I did not find the book to be very inspiring.I was hoping for it to have more of an Arts and Crafts feel, or be along the lines of the Not So Big House series, which I recommend instead of this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant browsing
This book is a very nice compilation. It has the usual high "Taschen" standard of photography and is nice and heavy on the pictures. The other great thing about the book is that it shows a series of very "lived in" sort of interiors (unlike the really contrived sort you so often see in design books). Overall, a really enjoyable read for anyone interested in seeing how the other half lives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A JOY TO OWN!
Of all of my interior design and style books this is one of my VERY favorites... I sink into my favorite chair with this book again and again.I just love it!Wether you prefer old world style or sleek modern this book has it all (but far from ordinary!)... lots of inspiration with LOTS of gorgeous photos. A treat for your eyes whatever your taste!

5-0 out of 5 stars brilliant
I own this book, Morroccan Interiors, Provance Interiors and Seaside Interiors.I will eventually own the whole lot of them.Why-- the books are a marvelous look into the interiors of people who are most rarely interior designers. They are artists, old people, young people, even gypsy caravans are given their due.I have gleaned better decorating ideas from these books than any "decorating" magazine or book. There was a story about letting the person who just moved from your apartment help you place your furniture as you move it- they know what fits where from their expericance. This and these books are great for "just making sense" in a vairety of gorgeous settings documented in gorgeous full color photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Decorating Inspiration
If you are looking for a picture book of Parisian interiors to inspire your decorating, this will work very well.I am constantly searching for books like this--which are full of illustations of those interior details which seem to be uniquely Parisian.Every page is illustrated with photographs and includes just enough commentary to keep it interesting without getting descriptively heavy. This is definitely a pictoral reference/beautiful parlour table book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cool View into Londoners Living Their Design Dreams
Fabulous photos and a tremendous variety in decorating styles make this a fascinating look into the homes of Londoners. *London Interiors* features homes of both celebrities (people like suit designer Ozwald Boateng and one of the Gallagher brothers and his wife) and non-celebrities (including some pseudo-celebrities such as designers and internet entrepreneurs.)

What the people in the book have in common is their interest and ability to use a space to its utmost/ create a space which really speaks to them personally. These folks are all successfully practicing "unofficial" feng shui, wearing their inner creative hearts on their sleeves, er, homes. Many of the photos of the homes and apartments/studio/work-spaces have the owners in them, smiling away. I thought this was a nice touch, because it let me see the face behind the design/living style, and gave a fuller glimpse/view into the personality of the person(s) living there/using the space.

Each (color) portion is foreshadowed by a black-and-white photo of the street/outside portion of the home. An interesting way to say, "you're here, welcome inside," before the color, personality, and personal style beckon and dazzle before you. I thought it was interesting to see that behind the somewhat drab London brick facades, these colorful and multi-faceted worlds existed, normally hidden from view. The next time I'm in London (hopefully someday, sigh, it's such a great city), I will have to make a point to remember all these funky little oases hidden away, and that I've gotten to see them close-up, and vicariously experience going into these homes/studios.

Definetely one to check out -- I found it by chance at the local library, and really enjoyed reading it. For the decorator interested in seeing a large variety of distinct, personal styles, each taken to the hilt. Highlights are the kitsch/color/clutter-filled apt of the man in the leopard skin suit (you'll see what I mean :) ), to the completely opposite almost thoroughly minimalist house, with not a stray speck of color or furniture anywhere (besides the ABSOLUTE basics) -- ie: even the bath is made of slate.... rather, three pieces of it set into a wall -- you can hardly tell it's there or what it is!

It will definetely inspire you to take a new look at the space around you and maybe give you some nudges in the direction of making some design changes. It is a varied and eclectic book, so chances are, you will find one home or idea that speaks to you the most. If not, even seeing people unafraid to take their design ideas and run with them will probably be inspiring in and of itself. A caveat, however, this is not an interior design guide-book or how-to book. It is just a snapshot view into early 21st century life in a living, thriving London.

Since *London Interiors* is one of many products in the European "Taschen" series, there are small paragraphs in italic German and French text translating the larger English paragraphs on each page.

5-0 out of 5 stars HOMES IN THE EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF COOL
Contemporary London is an extraordinary city - endlessly creative and imaginative, vibrant and contradictory, multiculturally unique, paradoxically sophisticated and iconoclastic, sometimes eccentric, but always intriguing. This book is a window on the private worlds of a handful of Londoners whose homes reflect the city in all its spirited diversity.

Architect John Pawson and wife Catherine's rigorously minimal, utterly disciplined, nearly color-free home contrasts with the lush, jewel-toned environment of clothing designer Ozwald Baoteng.Peter Hone's extraordinary West-London flat is packed, literally up to the ceiling, with priceless plasterwork architectural artifacts, while interior designer Jonathan Reed's Chelsea loft is handsomely kitted out with masculine antique and modern pieces in the natural palettes of stone, wood and leather. Retailer Sam Robinson's Notting Hill flat is a living scrapbook of vivid, cozy femininity and contrasts completely with Rolf Sachs's light filled showcase of contemporary art and collectible furniture.

Not just selected from the expected posh and stylish areas, LONDON INTERIORS shows us homes in up-and-coming, but still gritty Hoxton and Shoreditch, and off-the-expected-path Spitalfields and Hampstead.

LONDON INTERIORS is packed with 450 gorgeous pictures showing the infinite variety of modern London living, and with nary an inch of chintz in sight.

Jane Edwards trained in fashion, journalism and photography at London's St. Martins School of Art but became interested in interior design while living in Hong Kong and South East Asia during the 1990s. She was a contributing editor to Elle D├ęcoration among other magazines and is the author of a book on Asian interior design. Ms. Edwards lives and works in London. ... Read more

At Home In France: Eating and Entertaining with the French

    Editorial Review

If you've been to France and sampled the legendary hospitality of the French, At Home in France will trigger a sensual, nearly palatable nostalgia. If you've never been, this is the next best thing to actually sharing a well-laid table in Provence or at an ancestral vineyard in the Beaujolais.

Though raised in New York, author Christopher Petkanas has lived in France since 1982 and has cultivated a gourmand's taste and an artist's discerning eye. In At Home in France, he takes us to 18 different homes and regions to discover the art of entertaining and eating with the French.Disdaining the Western luncheon practice of eating "a nasty sandwich ... while polishing off at least two other tasks," Petkanas revels in the French "atmosphere of care, respect, and attention that is all the more engaging for being automatic."

We visit the home of Simone "Simca" Beck, a chef, author, and colleague of Julia Child, at her home behind the Riviera and learn the secret to her Fricandeau de Veau de la Ferme aux Champignons. Later we tour a cottage on Ouessant, a remote island in Brittany, where furniture was often made with the wood of shipwrecks and learn authentic recipes for mussels filled with anise-flavored butter and pollack steaks en papillotte with dried island seaweed.

The hospitality of the people who opened their lives to Petkanas is simply amazing and their histories as are fascinating as the ease with which they entertain. The photographs by Jean-Bernard Naudin are as beguiling and sumptuous as the meals and the homes themselves must be. Spend a few hours with At Home in France and learn for yourself l'art de recevoir. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is an embarrassment!
I don't know how anyone could give this book a good review. The text is stilted and awkward and is marred by multiple spelling and grammatical errors. The photos are too small to be helpful in most cases and in several places the captions were misaligned and not printed properly. Rockport Press usually produces much nicer works. Skip this one folks it's a real mess.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Aid to Decorating With a Plan
Works with a plan in mind, a scheme which is carried through beginning with a scale drawing, and then maneuvering the pieces and elements around to achieve the style and effect desired.

Proceeds to discussion of color and lighting and window effects, then to a room-by-room decorating helps and aids. This is particualarly helpful, as focuses attention on area(s) where one is. Even addresses those odd areas as corridors and landings and ends with a nice section on the various period styles. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A life to dream of
If you love French history, art, decoration and life style; if you have ever dreamed of living in a beautiful French chateau, you must get this book. Each time I open this book I am enchanted. What makes this book especially interesting is that people still live in these chateaus, these dreamscapes of tall Mansart roofs, formal French gardens and rooms filled with 18th century furniture.Forget about the text, it's the ravishingly photographed gardens and interiors that inspire one to dream. Beyond the sheer fantasy of it, this book showed me how I could create a little of the "French Chateau Style" in my own humble living space. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Victoria, Exquisite , Breathtaking, Inspiring
Exactly what I was looking for! Creating a Private World is filled with beautiful pictures of cream colored fabrics and walls, lacy windows, draped bedspreads and delicately set tables.

The color ideas can leave you calm and soothed, passionate, nostaglic, or inspired. I originally planned to sit down with a cup of tea and look through each page- but no- I started bursting with thought, looking through my fabric collection and searching for new ways to decorate each room. Needless to say my tea was cold but my mind was soaring.

Obtaining this look is not something you run out on a shopping spree and purchase everything all at once. It takes time and carefully selected pieces to blend together beautifully.

Creating a Private World is a fantastic beginning. This way you can see what styles you like and what would work with the spaces you have. It' s also a very nice read and to thumb through at the end of the day.

I purchased this as a treat for myself, along with Victoria's Romantic Country Style, and Victoria's The Charms of Tea.

A little at a time I'll create my own Private, Intimate home.

A beautiful gift for a friend or loved one~ or yourself.

This book comes from a beautiful series. Each book is wonderfully produced with gorgeous photos, high quality paper, and pretty end-papers (haven't seen any of those for a while).

Each photo is someone's way ofcreating their own private space - or a space that intimately reflectstheir personal interests. The text on that page, tells about the person, sometimes telling the evolution of that private space.

Sometimes it isjust a corner, or a desktop - but a reminder that we need places thatbelong to us alone.

Beautiful ways to do our just Being.Rememberingjust Being is an art form. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful spaces, mostly urban context, good ideas
As a dyed-in-the-wool modernist, I really liked the majority of these spaces. Several architects who are little known in the USA (Claesson Koivisto Rune from Stockholm, Sweden for example) are well represented. Many of the homes presented had usable ideas that I will consider in my personal renovation plans. In addition, there are several attractive attic conversions for those of you looking to remodel an attic space. All in all, a very usable book of modest sized contemporary spaces.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not your mother's dream home...
If you're a fan of minimalist spaces or Euro-Industrial-Tech type houses you're probably love this book (or if you're an architectural student, you'll probably love this book). If you're primarily interest in small homes of a more traditional design however, this is definitely not the book for you.I don't think the description listed with the book does a good job of stating that (nor the photo on the cover). My only real comments about the book itself is that it seems oddly dated, even though the book was published in 2001 ('high-design' houses have a short life-span of being avant-garde I'm guessing), and that it is a well-designed and interesting book for the right audience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wallpaper* Spatial Sensibility
Beautiful jewel-box like architectural projects by young emerging architects around the world. Their youthful enthusiasm is reflected in the clever spatial manipulation, as well as in the detail refinement-all within tight budgetary constraints. Generous photographs & informative drawings, combined with 'design solution' commentary, make this book a valuable source of inspiration. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Luscious photographs and extremely practical decorating advice combine to make this volume both a delight to behold and an excellent resource for anyone looking to emulate the English-cottage look at home. Solid information on basic stylistic elements and on choosing colors and fabrics lays the groundwork for a room-by-room survey of lovely spaces. From entryways and family living spaces to bedrooms, bathrooms, home offices, and outdoor living areas, the text, the photos, and the captions offer wonderful verbal and visual advice on why these rooms work so well and how you can adapt them to work for you. A series of marvelous double-page spreads entitled "Get the Look" feature detailed photos grouped thematically to showcase such concepts as displaying collections, disguising storage, or setting an outdoor table. This is a good primer on cottage-style decorating, and even if you're already familiar with a lot of the basics, you'll still find inspiration in these pages. --Amy Handy ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Special Retreat
As a collector of decorating books, I found this fresh and exciting!Although I can't afford a giant plaster head, the use of color, objets d'art, antiques and everday found objects lends itself to immediate inspiration.Tres European, tres chic!My favorite section is theapartment left untouched by the 2oth c.It is so rare to catch a glimpseof an actual abode left intact from so long ago.Inspiration can be takenfrom many different sources such as a unique fabric, even something asmundane as peice of cardboard. This book is a treat creatively andvisually.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous french interiors
This softcover is full of gorgeous home furnishings sourced from flea markets presumably from France. It is more of a pictorial study of lovely furniture, room layouts, antique details, drapery and linens rather than a 'how to guide' to furnishing a home in this style - it is provides someinspirational ideas for decorating and thoughts on furnishings and colorcombinations - although some furnishings and abodes are a little out ofreach for most of us (the essential paris apartment with french doors, parqued floors and mammoth marble busts) it is fabulous to look at it andis a nice coffee table addition. Enjoy. ... Read more
