Word 2000 for Windows for Dummies by DanGookin Average Customer Review: Paperback (07 May, 1999) list price: $21.99 -- our price: $14.95 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Microsoft Word has been around for a long time, but if you are new to computing, Word 2000 can be intimidating. In Word 2000 for Windows for Dummies, veteran Dummies series author Dan Gookin goes a long way toward banishing Word's intimidation factor. If you are an experienced Word user, Word 2000's new features, which are few for the average user, will not require relearning the software. Gookin has made learning the basics of Word 2000 easy and fun for those who do not know the product well or are new to Word. As with all Dummies books, the irreverent style wears well and the humor makes learning enjoyable. Word 2000 first teaches you the basics of creating a document. Subsequent learning areas include formatting, creating tables, inserting figures, making a table of contents, and even mail merging using Word. While the coverage of the essentials is very good, the tips scattered throughout the book are often priceless. For instance, Gookin tells you how to alter the Office Assistant's icon or hide it completely. He also includes such useful tips as how to use an ALT-key combination to copy character formats. If you want to learn Word 2000 and have some fun doing it, Word 2000 for Windows for Dummies is the right book for you. --Rob Franklin ... Read more Reviews (5)
"I have no idea what a text wrapping break is." Now that's helpful! At least I now know who the real "Dummie" is!
Also recommended: For my own use, it wasn't much help. I'm a long time Word power-user. I'd say the best advanced book is 'Learn Word 2000 VBA Document Automation' (driza) and the best average user book is 'Using Word 2000' (camarada). Good luck! ... Read more Isbn: 0764504487 |

Special Edition Using Microsoft Word 2000 by Bill Camarda Average Customer Review: Paperback (08 January, 1999) list price: $39.99 -- our price: $26.39 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If you know your way around the block with Microsoft Word but want to learn more, Special Edition: Using Microsoft Word 2000 is the Word reference for you. It takes you deep inside the workings of Microsoft's premier word processing program, showing you how to exploit its strengths and avoid its weaknesses while creating sharp-looking documents as efficiently as possible. You might not learn to "manually kern individual letter-pairs" in any other manual, but it's laid out plain and simple on page 83 of Special Edition. There's lots more: Web page production, integration with Office 2000, and even Visual Basic for Applications all get detailed coverage--author Bill Camarda obviously knows his business and has left no stone unturned in his quest for document perfection. He pulls no punches when it comes to Word 2000's shortcomings either--he'll let you know what to expect and how to avoid problems in HTML conversion as well as other critical areas. The CD-ROM accompanying this book is a great help with the searchable text of the entire Special Edition: Using Microsoft Word 2000. You will also find selected material from other Special Editions books on the companion CD-ROM, including Woody's Office Power Pack (a set of fabulous Office 2000 utilities) and plenty of third-party software like Microsoft Camcorder, additional Word templates, and clip art. If you don't find new ways to improve your documents here, it's time to write your own book. --Rob Lightner ... Read more Reviews (14)
If you have subdocuments formatted under separate templates or under Word 97 there is no way to recover the desired formats.Microsoft tells me that Word 2002 will correct this problem. In the meantime stick with Word 97. If you wish to use a Master Document, create the Master Document first and then create the subdocuments using the Master Document template and be leary of changes to the template as subdocuments are created. If you do this, I suppose all of the marvelous features will work as advertised.I haven't tried it yet.
No wonder Bill's name moved from the bottom right-hand corner of the Word '97 book to the top left-hand corner of this Word 2000 book!He deserves the recognition and the accolades. I'd sure want my name in big letters on the cover if I wrote this book! ... Read more Isbn: 0789718529 |

Excel 2000 for Windows for Dummies by GregHarvey Average Customer Review: Paperback (07 May, 1999) list price: $21.99 -- our price: $14.95 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review You may not be a dummy, but that doesn't mean you were born knowing how to use spreadsheets. Excel 2000 for Windows for Dummies will bring you up to speed on Microsoft's premillennial package, even if you've never used anything like it before. A great reference for the beginner and the pressed-for-time, this book is organized as a series of chapters that build from the basics of pointing and clicking and figuring out the different parts of the spreadsheet to more advanced topics like Web-based data entry and macros. Visual learners will find much to love as well--there are screen shots galore and plenty of icons to point you to the most salient items quickly. Written in characteristic Dummies-style--laid-back and humorous--the text is as nonthreatening as can be; even the most diehard computer-phobes will find themselves chuckling as they (gulp) learn how to enter data. The techno-geeks down the hall might snicker at the bright yellow book on your desk, but you can snicker right back because you know you have better weekends. --Rob Lightner ... Read more Reviews (9)

Excel 2000 Formulas by John Walkenbach Average Customer Review: Paperback (22 October, 1999) list price: $44.99 -- our price: $29.69 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (42)
I read this book nearly non-stop, from cover to cover, almost as one would read a novel, instead of a text book. Walkenbach writes in a style that is understandable, and presents outstanding examples and tips which will definately take you to the next level. There are so many useful examples that this book is now permanently located within reach on my desk top. The section on using lookups, and the section on array formulas were very useful, as was the section included within working with databases and dealing with advanced filtering - which may give you techniques that are just short of amazing. Drawbacks: If you're a beginner to Excel, this may not be the best choice.Furthermore, the book is not always logically organized; it can be difficult to find that example that you KNOW was given, but don't know exactly where you saw it.Finally, the last three chapters on programming with VBA would have been better left to a whole seperate book, as there was only enough detail to add confusion (in fact, I believe this author has a book devoted to that). ... Microsoft® Excel 2000 Power Programming with VBA by JohnWalkenbach Average Customer Review: Paperback (07 May, 1999) list price: $49.99 -- our price: $32.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If you've mastered Excel and need to develop customized applications, Microsoft Excel 2000 Power Programming with VBA should have a place by your side. Written by noted Excel expert and PC World columnist John Walkenbach, it will thrust you deep into the inner workings of Excel and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to get you writing code immediately. Somewhat text-heavy (as programming books tend to be), it still contains a number of good illustrations and screenshots to effectively teach you. The first three sections cover the fundamentals of Excel and VBA; the next three deal with programming and development topics such as user forms, pivot tables, and event handling; the final section covers miscellaneous issues like compatibility, file manipulation, and class modules. The five appendices are useful for referencing Excel and VBA information, and the accompanying CD-ROM contains all the code and files you'll need to work through the book, not to mention the shareware version of Walkenbach's Power Utility Pack. (The full version is available through a free offer.) Nobody ever said programming was easy, but with Microsoft Excel 2000 Power Programming with VBA it's a lot simpler. --Rob Lightner ... This book devotes too much to VB, not enough to Excel specific functions. Or the Excel part is way out of proportion. Many chapters may be removed to make it concise: chapter 1, 5, 6, 25 - 28, and any references to Lotus1-2-3, Quattro Pro, XLM macro. Replace Part VII by how to interface to 300+ Excel functions. On software reuse, one should always use those tools that are available (and tested). The author seems to favor duplicating Excel functions in VB. On page 293, he wrote on sorting an array, " workaround is to transfer your array to a worksheet range, sort it using Excel's commands, and then return the result to your array. But if speed is essential, it's better to write a sorting routine in VBA." Isbn: 0764532634 |

Lotus Notes and Domino R5 All-In-One Exam Guide (All-in-One) by Libby Ingrassia Schwarz, Ben Malekzadeh Average Customer Review: Hardcover (28 June, 2001) list price: $59.99 -- our price: $40.79 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Lots of companies rely on Lotus Notes and Domino--they're a great solution anywhere people need to collaborate and communicate. If you can prove that you know what you're doing as an administrator and programmer of these powerful pieces of software, lots of good work is yours for the asking. Lotus Notes and Domino R5 All-In-One Exam Guide will help you prepare for and pass a number of IBM/Lotus exams. Specifically, it covers the material on the Certified Lotus Professional (CLP), Principal CLP, and Certified Lotus Instructor (CLI) test batteries. Because there's a lot of overlap among the certifications and the tests required for each, the authors take a holistic approach to Notes and Domino knowledge that cuts down on repetition in this big, hardcover book. Rather than bog the reader down in numbing procedures, the authors take a "best practices" approach that rewards attentive reading with frequent trips to the software interface to check out features the book introduces. This book may be a bit too text-heavy to serve as a ready reference after you've earned your certificate (it's hard to pick out configuration options that might fit well in tables), but there are other documents for that. This is the book to read and study--practice exam questions appear with each chapter--if you want a comprehensive understanding of the Notes and Domino system for the exams and beyond. --David Wall Topics covered:

Microsoft PowerPoint Version 2002 Step by Step by Perspection Inc., Perspection Inc. Average Customer Review: Paperback (13 June, 2001) list price: $29.99 -- our price: $19.79 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (6)
This book is not for the super technical, programmer types, but works great for the other 95% of us. I like that it is in color, and steps you through commands EXACTLY as they will appear onscreen. I have been able to do anything I have needed to do, and still frequently use this book as a reference. Earlier in the week I consulted it about putting video into a slide, which I had never done before. Now I have a very dramatic multimedia presentation that looks great. The salient point here is that I am not a huge PowerPoint expert, but this book makes me look like one. I gave it four stars only because it is a quite expensive book (remember it has all pages printed in color, and has a practice CD included), in fact twice the cost of many competing books. Although it is pricey, in the long run it is totally worth the expense.
