5-0 out of 5 stars Essential WordPerfect Helper
This is the best book!!I'm probably an intermediate user with some advanced knowledge of Word Perfect, yet I have found new things in this book that I did not know and probably would not have found on my own. Each subject is written in a clear, organized, steps 1, 2, 3, manner that anyone should be able to follow; but there are also Troubleshooting sections at the end of the chapters and (best of all) tips which will give you a deeper knowledge of the subject.

I have two copies of the book, one I keep at the office and one I keep at home.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Usless for the novice
As a user of Word Perfect for many years, It was very easy to format lables, etc.You just clicked on format, selected what you wanted and then selected the type of lable, card or whatever. Now there are no such selections and the instructions are not clear at all.Even the "Quick Source" card is no help. This book is definately not for the novice nor the intermediate computer operator.I think the program and the book are very much lacking in the ability to help the home user.

4-0 out of 5 stars One minor complaint
The book was excellent.I am a left brain type who likes to read through each bit and I found the explanation was simple but very effective. The hundreds of tips alone made it worth the money. So the one complaint .... ?
I am a Maths teacher and use the Equation Editor as much as any other feature - it gets ONE mention in the 756 pages and that is just to refer to the fact that there is an editing mode called "Equation Editor".
OK maybe Laura and Read don't have much need for writing equations but they might have found someone who does.Actually I have been using the Equation Editor for years and thought I knew everything there was to know but version 10 has some differences and I had hoped the book would help point them out.I guess I'll have to find out the hard way, again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Corel WordPerfect 9 fast & easy
I liked the format of the book. The book is for the beginner and intermediate student. It was easy to follow and there are plenty of good screen shots for those users who have difficulty finding it on their own.The Notes and Tips have great information, too. It is more than just areference guide. The fact that the book is less than 400 pages is a plusand the price is right! It will be easy to add supplemental worksheets toeach chapter to challenge the users who have mastered the concepts. Thebook will get the users up and ready to use Corel WordPerfect 9. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars still a dummy after buying this book
It was difficult to understand this book.People who are new to computers need a book that is written in non computer language. It helped me figure out how to set up a spreadsheet, but I still don't know how to undisable my toolbar so I can cut and paste.A lot of the terminology is not explained. This does not help the novice to understand what is going on.I think the way the book is set up is very confusing. It seems scattered to me and I had to skim through the entire book to find the references I wanted.I am taking a computer class for teachers now and I am still confused when I use this book.My instructer had to point out that the graphics in the book actually related to the computers tool bar. ... Editorial Review

Microsoft Word has been around for a long time, but if you are new to computing, Word 2000 can be intimidating. In Word 2000 for Windows for Dummies, veteran Dummies series author Dan Gookin goes a long way toward banishing Word's intimidation factor.

If you are an experienced Word user, Word 2000's new features, which are few for the average user, will not require relearning the software. Gookin has made learning the basics of Word 2000 easy and fun for those who do not know the product well or are new to Word. As with all Dummies books, the irreverent style wears well and the humor makes learning enjoyable.

Word 2000 first teaches you the basics of creating a document. Subsequent learning areas include formatting, creating tables, inserting figures, making a table of contents, and even mail merging using Word. While the coverage of the essentials is very good, the tips scattered throughout the book are often priceless. For instance, Gookin tells you how to alter the Office Assistant's icon or hide it completely. He also includes such useful tips as how to use an ALT-key combination to copy character formats. If you want to learn Word 2000 and have some fun doing it, Word 2000 for Windows for Dummies is the right book for you. --Rob Franklin ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
I purchased this book just for the information on "section breaks." What little there is, in a word, [bad]. It is therefore totally useless to me .... Here is a quote from that section:

"I have no idea what a text wrapping break is."

Now that's helpful! At least I now know who the real "Dummie" is!

4-0 out of 5 stars Stillstruggling
I found this a little easier to understand and use than "The Complete Idiot's Guide."I don't know what that makes me. It is pitched at a more elementary level and the jokes and cartoons are better. It is more frank about the limitations of Word 2000Neither book deals with the problems of crashes and glitches, and when (and how) you have to telephone the [$$$]-please have-your-credit-card-number-ready line for help. I'm still struggling (having come from Wordperfect for DOS).
On one occasion no commands were working, and I eventually found I was typing within a footnote. Right now I can't delete or rename any document. Neither book helps with that.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Average" sums it up best
This is right on target: bought this not expecting much (I'm not a big fan of the dummy books). My wife wanted to start 'learning the computer' which translated into Word processing. This book really did serve as a good introduction to Word.

Also recommended: For my own use, it wasn't much help. I'm a long time Word power-user. I'd say the best advanced book is 'Learn Word 2000 VBA Document Automation' (driza) and the best average user book is 'Using Word 2000' (camarada). Good luck! ... Read more

Special Edition Using Microsoft Word 2000

    Editorial Review

If you know your way around the block with Microsoft Word but want to learn more, Special Edition: Using Microsoft Word 2000 is the Word reference for you. It takes you deep inside the workings of Microsoft's premier word processing program, showing you how to exploit its strengths and avoid its weaknesses while creating sharp-looking documents as efficiently as possible. You might not learn to "manually kern individual letter-pairs" in any other manual, but it's laid out plain and simple on page 83 of Special Edition.

There's lots more: Web page production, integration with Office 2000, and even Visual Basic for Applications all get detailed coverage--author Bill Camarda obviously knows his business and has left no stone unturned in his quest for document perfection. He pulls no punches when it comes to Word 2000's shortcomings either--he'll let you know what to expect and how to avoid problems in HTML conversion as well as other critical areas.

The CD-ROM accompanying this book is a great help with the searchable text of the entire Special Edition: Using Microsoft Word 2000. You will also find selected material from other Special Editions books on the companion CD-ROM, including Woody's Office Power Pack (a set of fabulous Office 2000 utilities) and plenty of third-party software like Microsoft Camcorder, additional Word templates, and clip art. If you don't find new ways to improve your documents here, it's time to write your own book. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Value
The book adds little to what is easier and more thoroughly gotten from help screens.

It does not note several serious flaws such as the imposition of the Master Document template on subdocuments as they are inserted. The result can be disasterous reconstruction of the format of the imported document.

If you have subdocuments formatted under separate templates or under Word 97 there is no way to recover the desired formats.Microsoft tells me that Word 2002 will correct this problem. In the meantime stick with Word 97.

If you wish to use a Master Document, create the Master Document first and then create the subdocuments using the Master Document template and be leary of changes to the template as subdocuments are created. If you do this, I suppose all of the marvelous features will work as advertised.I haven't tried it yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very god.
I`m using this book a lot, bouth with learning new things in Word and to get new maybe more creative idees on how to do things. I will recomend it if you are new to Word or more experienced user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly What I Need!
This book is proving to be exactly what I need in order to go from being proficient to being ADVANCED with MS Word. The lay-out and design caught my eye immediately; I'm really impressed with how the manual is structured. The writing style is friendly and uncomplicated. I was pleased to discover that Bill included details and instructions which were omitted in the Word '97 version. So far, I've found complete and accurate answers to every question I've had. I love the projects at the end of each chapter! And the "Tips from Bill Camarda" are very, very cool.

No wonder Bill's name moved from the bottom right-hand corner of the Word '97 book to the top left-hand corner of this Word 2000 book!He deserves the recognition and the accolades. I'd sure want my name in big letters on the cover if I wrote this book! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

You may not be a dummy, but that doesn't mean you were born knowing how to use spreadsheets. Excel 2000 for Windows for Dummies will bring you up to speed on Microsoft's premillennial package, even if you've never used anything like it before.

A great reference for the beginner and the pressed-for-time, this book is organized as a series of chapters that build from the basics of pointing and clicking and figuring out the different parts of the spreadsheet to more advanced topics like Web-based data entry and macros. Visual learners will find much to love as well--there are screen shots galore and plenty of icons to point you to the most salient items quickly.

Written in characteristic Dummies-style--laid-back and humorous--the text is as nonthreatening as can be; even the most diehard computer-phobes will find themselves chuckling as they (gulp) learn how to enter data. The techno-geeks down the hall might snicker at the bright yellow book on your desk, but you can snicker right back because you know you have better weekends. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for Just Basics
This book is fine if all you want to do is basic spreadsheets. If cutting, pasting, basic formatting, or creating VERY simple formulas is all you need to do then this book is fine. However, if you are trying to do anything more complicated forget using this book. For instance, the section on creating Macros wasn't very detailed. In addition, the book is completely missing any explanation of how to use the more complicated formula functions (there is no mention of how to do any of the statistical functions). Probably 80% of what an average user needs is in this book. But for anything beyond the basics, forget it; you'll need another reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
I foudn the book compleely useless and a waste of money. It explains nothing. After studying this book for two hours I was unable to do anything whatsoever in Excel. Look elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gentle intro but no depth
This is a good book for a non stressfull introduction, but there are few good hands on examples. I've found that by doing complex detailed step by step examples you can learn more faster. The learnkey.com website has a good excel class ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!!
I work with Excel morning, noon, and night in both technical and academic environments, and this is the best book that I have ever found on Excel. The writing is clear and concise, and the examples are many and understandable. I learn something new every time I pick up this book, and my bosses think I can work miracles.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tool for anyone looking at advanced features
There is nothing more frustrating than an excel book claiming charting is an advanced feature. As an analyst for a consulting firm I am always pouring through different databases, and being quicker and more efficient is definitely something I wanted to accomplish. This book helped me immensely. My favorite discovery was array formulas, they are wonderful in cutting out a lot of middle steps in financial modeling. This book will save you lots of time and sanity - I highly recommend it for anyone who works in the manipulation of large amounts of data.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take yourself to a new level
As an intermediate Excel user, I was comfortable with writing basic formulas, simple conditional formating, pivot tables, etc.I've been using Excel for ten years, and was very familiar with writing formulas in previous versions, but needed to brush up on 2000 in my new job.

I read this book nearly non-stop, from cover to cover, almost as one would read a novel, instead of a text book. Walkenbach writes in a style that is understandable, and presents outstanding examples and tips which will definately take you to the next level. There are so many useful examples that this book is now permanently located within reach on my desk top.

The section on using lookups, and the section on array formulas were very useful, as was the section included within working with databases and dealing with advanced filtering - which may give you techniques that are just short of amazing.

Drawbacks: If you're a beginner to Excel, this may not be the best choice.Furthermore, the book is not always logically organized; it can be difficult to find that example that you KNOW was given, but don't know exactly where you saw it.Finally, the last three chapters on programming with VBA would have been better left to a whole seperate book, as there was only enough detail to add confusion (in fact, I believe this author has a book devoted to that). ... Microsoft® Excel 2000 Power Programming with VBA

    Editorial Review

If you've mastered Excel and need to develop customized applications, Microsoft Excel 2000 Power Programming with VBA should have a place by your side. Written by noted Excel expert and PC World columnist John Walkenbach, it will thrust you deep into the inner workings of Excel and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to get you writing code immediately.

Somewhat text-heavy (as programming books tend to be), it still contains a number of good illustrations and screenshots to effectively teach you. The first three sections cover the fundamentals of Excel and VBA; the next three deal with programming and development topics such as user forms, pivot tables, and event handling; the final section covers miscellaneous issues like compatibility, file manipulation, and class modules.

The five appendices are useful for referencing Excel and VBA information, and the accompanying CD-ROM contains all the code and files you'll need to work through the book, not to mention the shareware version of Walkenbach's Power Utility Pack. (The full version is available through a free offer.) Nobody ever said programming was easy, but with Microsoft Excel 2000 Power Programming with VBA it's a lot simpler. --Rob Lightner ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Might be ok for some users
Charts are not given much coverage. Chart data is not given much coverage. From a programmer's point of view, simple excel vba object graphs and explanations of properties would be more helpful. Some examples come straight from the MSDN Office developer sections. I really wish authors would refrain from the cut and paste of the MSDN. Consumers of this type of material are looking for more than MSDN help files. All that said....
    It gets you started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant Resource
I have found this book to be absolutely fantastic.I am not sure it is for the beginner, but for someone who has a little knowledge of VB it is an excellant refresher. The book is well written and seems to flow in a logical sequence. It is very easy to understand and examples are plentiful.I have been tinkering with macros in Excel for about a year and the book is bringing VBA and Excel together for me.I have have already cut some of the coding in my modules in half by using the techniques found in the book. This book is definitely going to be come one of my major references when it comes to using VBA in Excel.I have certainly gotten my money's worth out of this book and will be looking for other books written by John Walkenbach.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, but Excel portion is lacking
I purchased this book for learning how to call Excel worksheet functions in VB, but I didn't get it. This is a difficult topic as the syntax is strange (This is a frequently asked quation in Google's excel focum).

This book devotes too much to VB, not enough to Excel specific functions. Or the Excel part is way out of proportion. Many chapters may be removed to make it concise: chapter 1, 5, 6, 25 - 28, and any references to Lotus1-2-3, Quattro Pro, XLM macro. Replace Part VII by how to interface to 300+ Excel functions.

On software reuse, one should always use those tools that are available (and tested). The author seems to favor duplicating Excel functions in VB. On page 293, he wrote on sorting an array, " workaround is to transfer your array to a worksheet range, sort it using Excel's commands, and then return the result to your array. But if speed is essential, it's better to write a sorting routine in VBA."
First, I doubt about the speed claim. Second, even if the speed gain were true, taking the time to write a new (and reliable) sorting routine is hardly justified in practice. Third, what about the other Excel functions you have to use tomorrow ? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars OK for the basic beginner only!
Combined with some hands on advice and training this book is only useful for the person with few computer skills and no knowledge of Notes. If the person is computer literate, say with Microsoft Office, then the money is better spent with a more intermediate text such as Lotus Notes in 24hrs by Sams. For the money, I feel any user would be better off putting the money toward a more robust volume for the beginner/intermediate user.In our case, we wasted our money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Training Tool!

    Editorial Review

Lots of companies rely on Lotus Notes and Domino--they're a great solution anywhere people need to collaborate and communicate. If you can prove that you know what you're doing as an administrator and programmer of these powerful pieces of software, lots of good work is yours for the asking. Lotus Notes and Domino R5 All-In-One Exam Guide will help you prepare for and pass a number of IBM/Lotus exams. Specifically, it covers the material on the Certified Lotus Professional (CLP), Principal CLP, and Certified Lotus Instructor (CLI) test batteries. Because there's a lot of overlap among the certifications and the tests required for each, the authors take a holistic approach to Notes and Domino knowledge that cuts down on repetition in this big, hardcover book.

Rather than bog the reader down in numbing procedures, the authors take a "best practices" approach that rewards attentive reading with frequent trips to the software interface to check out features the book introduces. This book may be a bit too text-heavy to serve as a ready reference after you've earned your certificate (it's hard to pick out configuration options that might fit well in tables), but there are other documents for that. This is the book to read and study--practice exam questions appear with each chapter--if you want a comprehensive understanding of the Notes and Domino system for the exams and beyond. --David Wall

5-0 out of 5 stars The book helped me with my first test
I was able to pass 521: Maintaining Domino Servers and Users studying exclusively with this book and using some practice test I came across. You will need Notes experience and I recommend finding all the practice test you can, but this book is a steal ... Everything Lotus comes up with on the test is in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not For the Casual User
This book is a very detailed examination of Domino R5, with emphasis on Administration and Application Development. It is a great STUDY GUIDE but is not particularly useful for someone with no experience wanting to get into these subjects. You must have some background in the subject to get any use out of this book. That said, I have used this as my prime study reference to earn a CLP as a developer. Two down, one to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great preparation for CLP
I'm working with notes since two years, and I've done many courses. 3 Weeks ago I started the CLP test series. The 520 Test I passed with a score of 82%, the 521 with a score of 89% and the 3th one 522 today with 80%. I have learned only with this book and old online tests. I passed all the exams the first time and I'm not good in testwriting, I'm to nervous.
I recomend this book to anyone who would like to become a Certified Lotus Administrator. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference!
I took the 3 basic Developer courses one year ago, onsite at an authorized Lotus training center.Lotus Notes is only one of the many databases I support, so I have not been able to use what I learned in the classes on a daily, or even weekly, basis.I consulted this book twice today, and found exactly what I was searching for both times immediately by using the index. Thanks to the concise index, I did not have to read through pages of other topics to find my solutions. The total cost of the book was justified in less than 10 minutes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Domino Designer novice
I've spent my time developing SQL and Access databases, so when it came to Domino, I was apprehensive at first. With the help of this book, halfway through it, I developed a functional database to contain work orders. I've received many compliments on it, and I've the book to thank. Many of the things used in it I learned directly from the book. If you are looking for advanced web development, this is not the book you need. If you are looking for a good "feet in the pool" starter, I recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Barely Adequate
I purchased this book based on the reviews and am disappointed in it.Yes, it does show you exactly what to do but the examples are disjointed.Instead of actually working on a project, you make absolutely minute changes to a pre-existing file.In fact, in one section the authors have you open a blank presentation and save it without having typed a thing!

I thought that maybe each chapter or maybe the whole book would be devoted to creating a project and that the CD would have the supporting files.I had not anticipated that each section of the book would have its own file and so you never build on what you had done in the previous section.

I had used a book on MS Publisher that did just that - you created a project and the authors provided the supporting text and graphics but you actually made something.

Perhaps the book will improve as I am only on chapter 4 but I'm not real hopeful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great For Getting Started With PowerPoint!
Before starting grad school earlier this year I had never had any reason to know how to use PowerPoint, but when the time came to learn, I had to get with it fast. The directions that come with the stand alone Microsoft product are pretty weak, so I bought this manual as the best for comprehensiveness and being comprehendible by an average MS Word user.

This book is not for the super technical, programmer types, but works great for the other 95% of us. I like that it is in color, and steps you through commands EXACTLY as they will appear onscreen. I have been able to do anything I have needed to do, and still frequently use this book as a reference. Earlier in the week I consulted it about putting video into a slide, which I had never done before. Now I have a very dramatic multimedia presentation that looks great.

The salient point here is that I am not a huge PowerPoint expert, but this book makes me look like one. I gave it four stars only because it is a quite expensive book (remember it has all pages printed in color, and has a practice CD included), in fact twice the cost of many competing books. Although it is pricey, in the long run it is totally worth the expense.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for the average Joe
I bought this series of books for the people at the office. They are easy to understand and pretty much anyone learnt something new. This book is not for computer geeks.. Too basic for you... ... Read more
