    Editorial Review

"The STRINGS all soar, the REEDS implore, / The BRASSES roar with notes galore. / It's music that we all adore. / It's what we go to concerts for." In this exuberant tribute to classical music and the passionate, eccentric musicians who play it, author Lloyd Moss begins with the mournful moan and silken tone of one trombone. A trumpet sings and stings along, forming a duo, then a fine French horn joins in, "TWO, now THREE-O, what a TRIO!" The mellow cello ups it to a quartet, then ZIN! ZIN! ZIN! a violin soars high and moves in to make a quintet. The flute that "sends our soul a-shiver" makes a sextet, and "with steely keys that softly click," a sleek, black, woody clarinet slips the group into a septet. We move on! A chamber group of ten!And the orchestra is ready to begin. Moss should be congratulated for creating a playful, musical stream of rhyming couplets that seamlessly, slyly teaches the names of myriad musical groups. Marjorie Priceman, the whimsical, masterful illustrator of Elsa Okon Rael's When Zaydeh Danced on Eldridge Street and Jack Prelutsky's For Laughing Out Loud, won a Caldecott Honor Award for this swirling, twirling, colorful musical world worthy of thunderous applause and a standing ovation. 5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable and educational
One of my favorite aspects of this book is the vocabulary. One, two, three becomes: solo, duo, trio. The rhythum of the rhyme is incredibly lyrical so even the text seems suited for a melody. So you could make up your own melody to go with the story!

5-0 out of 5 stars Emergent readers' gem!
Being a cello player myself, I believe all children should be exposed to music as soon as possible. This is a great introduction to music, orchestras, and the sounds the instruments make. Its great for emergent readers because of the rhyming and the way the words seem to flow from page to page. The illustrations are beautiful and whimsical.I really like the way the author uses pretty advanced descriptive words for the sounds the instruments make, like mournful moan for the trombone and the reeds implore.

Students will also learn basic information about musical groups, such as what theyre called, octet, quintet, etc.A great part of this book is that the musical terminology is not reduced to childrens levels. The words are quite large and reflect what is really true about classical musical instruments and musical groups.I think children would enjoy seeing the illustrations and learning about these instruments, and perhaps picking their favorite one.It plants an early seed in their head about orchestral groups, makes music fun, and perhaps creates a new generation of orchestral students.

3-0 out of 5 stars Obviously, this is a minority opinion
As the 20-plus reviews thus far have ALL been five stars! So, take what I say with a grain of salt...

and even I actually mostly like this book (though I know at least one person who actually dislikes the book and won't read it anymore -- she finds the art ugly and the text strained -- but I'm married to her, she can write her own review).

I don't particularly notice the art, I'm usually half-asleep when reading this book to my 4-year-old in bed. But the text does sometimes jar me -- my teeth practically break when I get to the lines that rhyme CELL-owith hell-O (clearly one is supposed to pronounce it HELL-o here, but I can't make myself do it) -- on the other hand, some of it's really quite nice: "with steely keys that softly click//its breezy notes so darkly slick,..." (that ought to give you a sense of it -- if you say that aloud and think "ooh, I like the way those words fit together", and you want to say them to your child, then get this book. If you think "a clarinet's notes are breezy? or slick?"
or you worry about the rhyme of clarinet and septet, then maybe it isn't for you.)

Still, I like the nice twist on counting books, with 1,2,3,
becoming solo, duo, trio, etc. -- and the mouse-cats-dog subplot in the pictures is cute, too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite
Despite a childhood filled with books, I didn't see this one until I picked it up in a secondhand store last week (at the age of 46!). I have read it several times a day since. There's something profoundly sweet and comforting about it, without the slightest trace of sappiness. It makes me feel transported the way books used to magically do before I turned 7, a rare thing indeed. Of course every child should have this book, but so should every grownup in this wicked world.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Lilttle Fur Family
Initially put off by the miniature edition I'd ordered by mistake, I now must recommend it. We have an older hardback that my daughters love, and this small, fur covered version is another hit. My 15 month old loves to hold a little book in her hands that feels 'all soft and all warm'.

    Editorial Review

The creator of Polkabats and Octopus Slacks puts his playful pen to paper again in Dutch Sneakers and Fleakeepers. Calef Brown's story-poems are nonsensical and exuberant, and his muted, sophisticated Cubist paintings join the party with equal zeal. Did you know that fleas "learn to speak German / more quickly than bees"? Or that "bad teeth" aren't really bad, they just need "a cleaning and something to chew"? No, resist the impulse to look for lessons: Brown--a hip, modern Edward Lear--is here to have fun. Children will adore meeting the feared "Tattlesnake" (with unusual stripes and big ears), an electric-guitar-playing grandmother, a runaway waffle, a mysterious fish ("Green like asparagus. / Flat like a dish"), Sir Dance-a-lot, and the rest of Brown's crazy--yes, crazy--cast of characters. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Big Hit with My 6 Year Old!
Amazon.com delivered this book to my son as a gift from a very wise and whimsical friend. He loved it instantly and it became THE requested bedtime book night after night after night. And, that was OK, because we (the grown-ups) love it too! The poems are wacky and sometimes demented and make sense in that dream-sense or nonsense way. You'll laugh and laugh as our family does -- and you'll each have a favorite (mine is "Mysterious Fish"). Promote a love of language and of silliness -- buy this book for a child you love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story poems for everyone
Calef Brown has written a collection of poems that are real winners. They are easy to read with modern wacky language and rhymes that kids will just love. The accompanying illustrations are rich in color and detail andcompliment each poem.Everyone in the family will enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another gem from Calef Brown
A wonderful follow-up to one of the most clever and fun children's books of last year. Mr. Brown's illustrations -- vivid, color-saturated, witty, and just sinister enough to keep adults and kids interested -- areheightened by DUTCH SNEAKERS' delightfully loopy verse. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Daughter's Favorite Book
My 3 year old daughter asks for this book to be read each night as we tuck her in! I give her a little hug or a tickle each time the I read the phrase, "NO Matter What". This has become a loving bedtime ritual for us!My daughter is also fascinated by the wonderful illustrations in the book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Another great book about unconditional love

Although this book smacks of the same ideas behind the books "I'll Love You Forever," "The Runaway Bunny," and "Guess How Much I Love You," it's a heartwarming favorite nevertheless.

"No Matter What" is about a little fox endearingly named "Small" and his mother, "Large." Small is very grumpy as he's getting ready for bed, and he can't understand how his mother could love him when he's acting this way.He questions whether she would love him even if he were a different animal or lived far away. His mother ensures Small that she would love him "no matter what." The book "No Matter What" may be based on a trite plot/concept, but at least it's one worth repeating.

The illustrations in this book do more than simply reinforce the text, for the text is simple and and abstract in some places, particularly toward the end of the book. The illustrations give concrete images to the abstract concept of love, while providing humorous details and asides. The pull-toy that Small breaks, for example, becomes mended on the page where Small asks if love can be fixed or patched. Circular lines provide a unifying motif throughout the work's illustrations, and the bright colors lend to the book a feeling of warmth.

I recommend this book. The illustrations and rhythmic text, in particular, are delightful. The only drawback I noticed was the slight breakdown in voice toward the end of the book, where the text drifts into the abstract concept of love. But at that critical shift in text, the illustrations remain compelling, and thus, so does the book.

    2-0 out of 5 stars JUST A SO-SO BOOK
IT'S AMAZING THIS BOOK HAS SO MANY 5-STAR REVIEWS.THAT'S WHY I BOUGHT IT.THE BOOK'S NOT BAD, BUT IN NO WAY A MUST HAVE FOR YOUR HOME LIBRARY.TWO MUCH BETTER BOOKS REGARDING UNCONDITIONAL LOVE ARE: MAMA DO YOU LOVE ME & I LOVE YOU STINKY FACE. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars A good read-aloud book
This is the only anthology of poems that we currently have formy 1 1/2 year old daughter and I am not sure it can be topped.Theillustrations are wonderful, from lyrical fish, to beret-wearing little girls throwing tantrums. The poems are from all over, and from all time periods, some by established writers, like Robert L. Stevenson, and others by unknown authors. Not all of the poems are big hits with us, but 85% are right on the money. "Dr. Stickles Tickled Me" really helped break the ice at recent trip to the pediatrician, and "Silvery Silvery, Over the Trees, the Moon Drifts by on a Runaway Breeze" makes a great bedtime verse.I bet most of us don't remember much poetry from our childhood, but this book makes re-learning it all great fun. ... Editorial Review

Olivia would be Eloise, if Eloise were a pig.She is good at singing 40 very loud songs and is very good at wearingpeople out. And scaring the living daylights out of her little brother, Ian,particularly when he copies her every move. She is also quite skilled atreproducing Jackson Pollock's "Autumn Rhythm #30" on the walls at home. When hermother tucks her in at night and says, "You know, you really wear me out. But Ilove you anyway," Olivia precociously pronounces, "I love you anyway too."

The New Yorker artist Ian Falconer's endearing charcoal portraits of hisporcine heroine are spotted with fire-engine red gouache in all the rightplaces--perhaps a tribute to Hilary Knight's red, pink, white, and blackcelebrations of Olivia's human counterpart? When she dresses up, the bow on herears, her red lipstick, and her high-heeled shoes are all red. (The only timeher shades-of-gray body is pink is when she is sunburned and the area where herbathing suit was is white!) Falconer does a fine job of letting the spare textset up the jokes for the visual punch lines--a dryly humorous interplay thatadults will appreciate as much as children.

Preschoolers (and their parents) will see themselves in Olivia--a typicalhigh-energy, over-the-top kid who likes the beach and Degas paintings, but hatesnaps. On the other hand, she combs her ears and is unusually gifted atsandcastle building. While we are certainly reminded of Eloise, Falconer'sportrait is simpler in scope, less demented, and,as a result, less adult. Bottom line: precocious is fun, and we're tickled pinkto have Olivia join the parade of, let's just say, individualisticyoungsters. (Ages 4 to 8) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

My son is 18 months and loves this book. He even likes to sleep with it. The words are catchy and fun. The illustrations are wonderful. Its a wonderful book for a large range of readers. I plan to buy the entire series.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great text--illustrations don't excite us
My preschool daughter and I adore Olivia. She's your typical opinionated, difficult, charming preschool girl. (My favorite is her songbook "40 very loud songs.") However the illustrations belong on/in the New Yorker (it was not a surprise to find this was Falconer's usual venue). They are black and white and gray with accents in red. BORING. Some people apparently like this--my daughter and I would prefer color. If Falconer could loosen up and illustrate to match the vibrant personality of his heroine I'd buy more Olivia books. (Even if Eloise is also in black and white--at least she has pink, the preschool girl hands-down favorite.)

5-0 out of 5 stars words
this book helped to teach our two year old so many more new words it is the best word book ever!!!There are so many more words and pictures than any other word book I have found.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Title is Right On
I think I have to agree with the title of this book.Richard Scarry wrote and illustrated what might be the best word book ever for kids.I love Richard Scarry, especially his story books. His pictures give just enough detail and complexity without overwhelming a child and he has a variety of ideas that keep things interesting.

"The Best Word Book Ever!" is great for young children who are really starting to manipulate things well and are recognizing more and more of the world around them.My son is 17 months old and he loves the size of this book. The pages are big and easy to turn (although the size lends to the pages ripping easier so keep the tape handy) and it fills his lap for a big viewing area in front of him.

Scarry has filled the book with more than enough themes to make this a book you can go back to again and again. From pages that just list items like colors, parts of the body, kitchen items, the alphabet and numbers to scenes that bring in a wide array of related and unrelated words and pictures. This includes one and two pages spreads of neighborhoods, firefighters, the beach, the city, the countryside, rooms in your house and more.So if a child or parent is done with or bored with one page, the next page brings a different presentation.

The animal characters in the book are familiar to anyone who has read Richard Scarry and work well in presenting an everyday view of the world, even if rabbits don't really wear pants. This helps when pointing out actions on the page (Where is the bear?Who is driving the truck?).

As for negatives, they are few.Yes, the books do seem to wear out and tear but I believe that is from the size and from the attention they receive from eager children.Nothing wrong in that to me.Also, I have no reason to compare this version to older versions. If pages have changed or are missing, I don't notice and my son definitely doesn't notice or care.He loves what is in there now and 72 pages is more than enough for him.If this were a storybook, sure, I'd take issue, but this is still a Word book that has a big horizon of words and fulfills its purpose well.My copy does not note a new edition but does mention new illustrations approved in 1980 so maybe the author updated it. (It is possible that some people are confusing this book with the similarly titled, "Richard Scarry's Biggest Word Book Ever!"That may explain why it seems like pages are missing.)Also, since the whole book is illustrated, if you want actual photographs of objects, it would be good to have another word book to cover that base. And like any book, some of it might seem dated but it there is not much.A rotary telephone still is recognized as a phone.

I'm sure this book will continue to get lots of use and love from my toddler and I'll be there with him a lot, looking at it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another fun time for my toddler from Richard Scarry
I bought this book after my son fell in love with "Cars and Trucks and Things that Go". He loved it but not as much. A few of the pages here that just teach words and don't show a detailed landscape scene aren't as interesting to my 21 month old. But still, he's learning words and shapes and colors here. We've got spiders and police cars down, thanks to Richard Scarry. I can see this one being a book my son will enjoy for a while as he starts to learn his alphabet and to count. My son enjoyed this one enough to motivate me to start collecting all the R.S. books for him. This book is hardcover with paper pages. Watch out because little hands can rip those pages quickly. ... Editorial Review

    There is a house,
    a napping house,
    where everyone is sleeping.

"Everyone," in this case is a snoring granny, a dreaming child, a dozing dog, asnoozing cat, a slumbering mouse... and a wakeful flea! Uh-oh. Looks like thenapping house won't be napping for long. With their very own brand of humor,Audrey Wood and Don Wood create an appealing bedtime book compatible withMargaret Wise Brown's classic Goodnight Moon. This small, square board book, with its rhythmic, repetitive text and witty pictures inshades of ever-brightening blues and greens (as the night turns to day), is sureto be a winner with preschool insomniacs. The sleepy household congregates onGranny's bed, slowly building a very relaxed pile of bodies in shiftingpositions. Young readers will enjoy tracking the critters as they make theirway, one by one, to the bed--and then guessing what will happen when the wakefulflea joins the heap. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute, bedtime book
Ah, it's raining outside and everyone inside is sleeping. The dog, cat, grandma and grandchild are all snoozing and decide to pile up on grandma in the cozy bed.So, one by one, the child first, each animal and the rodent crawl on top of granny to take a snoozer.(What we'd like to know is how everyone turns over with each page and not fall off!)Somehow, that flea jumps up there too and bites the mouse and well, it all goes from there with granny finally breaking the bed from the fall! It's a really cute storybook and one every child should have. Each animal is shown in the story sleeping in every picture, but we still can't find the mouse in the pictures in the beginning of the story. The flea is there, sitting on the chair, but the mouse, well, haven't found him just yet. This is a very cute book and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book :)
The storyline runs the same as those classics of children's literature and song - "This is the house that Jack Built", "I knew an old lady who swallowed a fly", "The green grass grows all around", where you add one element on to the verse and recite the whole list each time around. It's especially fun when you go into absurdities - could the granny really support that much weight?

The artwork is wonderful. You start off with bland, dark, grey colors, which gradually become brighter once the flea bites the mouse. And (to my joy) you can see the flea and mouse in every picture except the first, which only shows the house. It's... good. I could go on, but then I'll start to babble.

5-0 out of 5 stars We loved this book! The Napping House wins in this house!
I read this book to my 3 year old in the afternoon and then to my 5 year old at bed time. My little one remembered the whole book and started reciting the lines with me. 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun for me and my almost-two year old
I'm really surprised by some of the poor opinions some have of this. My 23-month-old loves this book. She wants to hear "I'm Not Tired" again and again and again. The "Snoozers" and "Silly Lullaby" are both in the book/CD "Philadelphia Chickens," which is the only reason I give this a 4 -- while it's fun to know the tunes that go to those stories, it would have been better to give those two songs more illustrations in their own books. But in general, "I'm Not Tired" and the Pajamas story are well worth it to this mom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute bedtime
My little girl (3-1/2 years) and I read books before bedtime every night. This has proven to be a favorite. It is really nice to read a sleep story, kinda puts her in the "mood" for sleep. "I'm not tired" is fun, we read it together!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Goofy but great
OK, as an adult I first looked at this book and wondered "what is the big deal?"The stories are short, silly and simple. The illustrations are typical Sandra Boynton. Well... just give a two year old a chance with it.My daughter is 2, and has half of them memorized. We have to do the snore sounds for every animal just right, and the ridiculous song at the end of the book is a huge hit!Let your child be the judge.
I've ordered three more copies to store in my gift cupboard. Who would have known?! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Oh, the wonderful things Mr. Brown can do! In this "Book of Wonderful Noises," Mr. Brown struts his stuff, as he imitates everything from popping corks to horse feet ("pop pop pop pop" and "klopp klopp klopp," respectively) while inviting everyone to join him in the fun. Young readers who are still learning their sounds and letters will get a wacky workout as they follow along with the very serious-looking, squinty-eyed Mr. Brown. Whether it's eggs frying in a pan or a hippo chewing gum, the skillful Mr. Brown just keeps topping himself, with a "sizzle sizzle" or a "grum grum grum." "Mr. Brown is so smart he can even do this: he can even make a noise like a goldfish kiss!... pip!" As usual, the words and pictures of Dr. Seuss make reading (and making all sorts of funny noises) impossible to resist. Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? will stay fresh through many a giggling reading. --Paul Hughes ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My boy loves to repeat all the noises with Mr Brown
My boy loves this book. He has had it since he was just two months old, but he never seems to grow tired of it (he is 18 months old now). He loves the different noises, and anticipates some that he know he can do really well, like the "knock knock" sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best memories I have of my daughters babyhood...
...is connected to this book. When she was a baby into early toddlerhood, I read this book alot....really exagerating the noises...herfavorite was the thunder but really with all the noises, she got such a kick.....I have a picture framed of her when she was about 9 mos. old - I am reading the book making some stupid hand motion and she is just CACKLING with laughter....I suggest to parents who buy the book not just to read it but to make the sounds interesting....when it says "Knock knock", rap gently on their heads....When it says Pop pop, make hand motions to the popping....babys and toddlers will be entranced....as she got older, like 18 mos.,I paused and she 'd make thecorresponding noise!

I had the board book form....great for smaller hands btw....

5-0 out of 5 stars Great First Dr Suess book!
