    Editorial Review

The fourth volume in Meg Cabot's popular Princess Diaries series,Princess in Waiting begins in the tiny country of Genovia, where14-year-old Mia, the unlikely royal, is on winter break trying not tobite her fingernails. Being a princess and fighting for the installationof parking meters is tough, when all you really want to do is go back toyour regular life in New York City and see your dreamy boyfriendMichael. Of course, Mia is soon back in the city, trying not to failAlgebra II and trying to stay afloat in a sea of self-doubt. Could it betrue that she is merely a "massive reject" covered with orange cat hair? For that matter, is finding her missing lucky Queen Amidala underwear asimportant as finding her secret talent? Mia's frank, funny diary entriesrange from "Things to Do" lists ("Stop obsessing over whether or notMichael loves you vs. being in love with you"); lists of the valuablelessons of romantic heroines ("3. Elizabeth Bennet from Pride andPrejudice: Boys like it when you are smart-alecky."); transcripts ofinstant-messaging rounds with Michael; to poems ("Like the MilleniumFalcon in hyperdrive/ our love will continue to thrive and thrive") andgeneral irrational tirades. Whether or not Mia ever achieves hermuch-sought-after "self-actualization," teens will enjoy reading herover-the-top, up-to-the-minute-hip diary. (Ages 12 and older) --KarinSnelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the princess!
Oh, I just couldn't wait to read it! And, then, I finally did. And I wasn't disappointed at all. I love all Meg Cabot's books I've read (and, see, I've read lots of them), and the Princess Diaries Series are in the top list of my favourite books ever. I congratulate Meg for another wonderful YA book, because she is the Queen of the YA Chick Lit.
In that book, lots of interesting things happens to Mia. First of all, finally she's dating the boy of her dreams: Michael Moscovitz, who happens to be her best friend's brother. She should be happy about it, don't you think? But, well, she's not. Because, in her summer vacations on Genovia, Mia just can't stop wondering about a cute Kate Bosworth-like surfer girl dating his boyfriend.
After coming back, she gets confused about her inner gift, a romantic night with Michaels that turns out to be in the same night of a black-and-white genovian party, and all the tipic problems of a teenage girl.
Read it, you won't regret it!

2-0 out of 5 stars "Does Michael Love Me?" and yada yada yada
I've read all of the PD books so far (anticipating the 6th due late March 2005), but this one was definately a dud. It's plot fell flat, consisting mostly of Mia's insecurities and constant moaning. Teenagers moan and groan and whine, YES, but this was down-right ANNOYING. She is in Genovia for the holidays and each journal entry is a count down to the last or next contact she will have with Michael. I can barely remember what happened because really, nothing seemed to happen during the course of this book. It's a blur to me, and I'm not willing to try to remember.

1-0 out of 5 stars princess in waiting not worth the wait
This book was so disappointing! After the fantastic Princess in Love, the 4th book falls flat. The first 20+ pages are boring, personality-less entries in Mia's new "date book", blandly stating the facts of her Christmas break in Genovia. The entire book focuses on one thing: Mia spends the entire time moaning and whining about how much she misses Michael, and then when she finally gets back home to him, she worries that he will dump her when she tells him that she'll have to break their first date to attend a ball.Despite all her complaining, Mia appears to be doing everything possible to push Michael away, as she read the book Jane Eyre; and actually followed her Grandmere's (who dislikes Michael, "that boy")advice not to chase boys! She won't return Michael's phone calls, barely talks to him, and than wonders why he is acting "distant"!The book lacks any of the mishaps that make Mia so funny: the big crisis in this book is that someone "stole" her laundry. Also, once again, Grandmere dupes Mia once again, making you wonder: when will Mia get a clue? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and very helpful
I will admit; I have been struggling with body image and "looks" for about as long as I can remember. This book by Kimberly Kirberger helps me to realize that no body is perfect, and that you need to embrace what you look like and have. If you can totally accept yourself the way you are, then you are on your way to success.

After reading this book, I came to realize, and "saw the light" so to speak, about body image, self acceptance, and the search for my identity. I definently think that this book was very helpful in helping me to overcome the "stereotype" that you have to be 105 pounds to be considered beautiful. Now I know that I am perfect in every aspect of my life, and I now love and accept who I am inside...and who I am inside is all that really matters.

I definently strongly encourage those girls who are currently struggling with self acceptance, body image, and the search of who they are, to read this book, and also fill out the Nobody's Perfect Journal as well. This book is very helpful, and insightful, and it will get you back on the right track in life, and make you realize that life isn't all about looks and popularity...rather, it is a journey to love and acccept yourself for who you are!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an awsome book!
This book tought me everything a girl sturgels with and how to fix the problems! Every one should buy this book. It shows you how to handle your problems without exploding over every little thing. There are so many stories about girls who have had problems that i face in life and i learn from them mistakes instead of making them again. This book is the best book i have ever read. It talks about everything... including the serch for you intersoul and inner bueaty... ( seeing whats on the inside that counts) this book it tottaly worth your money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This book is my bible! i love it to death. It shows you simple things you forget back into the light and can truly change the way you think about yourself. It makes you realise that you're not alone out there with either eating disorders, abusive relationships, heart aches, suicides, or any situations that are hard to held with emotionally and physically. I've never really got into the chicken books myself, but this book took only a second to love it! i recommand this book to everyone! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Meet Sophie. She sees herself as the too-tall "Mount Everest ofteenage girls," who, along with her friends, often suffers from "lackonookiedisease." She's dating smoky, sexy Dylan, covertly chatting online with"cybersoul"-mate Chaz, and secretly nursing a crush on sweet, geeky Murphy. Hertwo best friends are closer to her than sisters, and she "hates hating" her soapopera-addicted mom, wishing "she would show half as much interest in my life asshe does in Luke and Laura's." In other words, Sophie is a typical teenage girl. What is not so typical is how author Sonia Sones records all of Sophie'sthoughts in a freewheeling verse that is such a naked outpouring of innerlonging, most readers will blush in embarrassed recognition of their ownremembered or current teenage desires. Sones gently leads both the reader andSophie towards an understanding of the difference between love and lust asSophie slowly comes to realize that Dylan's outsides are no match for Murphy'sinsides. Autobiographical of Sones, perhaps? The author claims it isn't so, andshe's probably right. With her frank manner, lusty thoughts, and hiddeninsecurities, Sophie reflects many teenage girls, past and present. No womanwill be able to read this heartfelt verse novel and not find a bit of herself inSophie's secret, sexy thoughts. Sones's decadent, almost shamefully deliciouscollection of angst poems is a loving and amazingly accurate tribute toadolescent girlhood. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What my Mother Doesn't Know
Sophie, a 15 year old, boy-crazy girl tells her story of finding her true love and creating a stronger relationship with her mother. Sophie goes out shopping with her mother and buys an ugly, flowery dress for her school halloween dance. Sophie hated it and went out and bought another dress behind her mothers back. Her mother caught her in the dress and won't even speak to her. She just watches TV and sleeps in the basement. Also, at the dance, Sophie dances with a masked man who she falls in love with. But, who is he? What is his name? Sophie doesn't know. All she knows is that during their school dance, there was something special between them. During this book, meant for teenage girls, Sophie will discover the true meaning of love and respect.

4-0 out of 5 stars What My Mother Doesn't Know
What My Mother Doesn't Know is a wonderful book. I think that because I could really relate myself to the book. One of the main characters are Sophie. Sophie is a girl that goes to a party and starts to dance with this guy she named Robin. Robin is this really dorky guy that nobody likes and always bullies. So she tells her frieds about Robin, but she doesnt tell them his name because she doesnt want them to make fun of her. Then she doesnt see him anymore because of her friends. You will have to read the book to figure out if she starts to see him again or not. Also, if her friends ever find out it was Robin.

5-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK!
What my Mother Doesn't Know is a story I recommend to all teens that want a good book. Once I started this book, I was so into it I could not put it down until I had finished it. This story was through a perspective of a teenage girl and some girls themselves can relate. This book seemed realistic and I could picture everything in my imagination. The story told about love and friends. It also teaches a great lesson about how the outside could be much different on the inside, and when you hear others say that philosophy, it truly matters. I loved this book and I'm sure you would too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a Magical Quest indeed
As opposed to most other materials available today, the author makes a concerted effort to not only acknowledge the spiritual component of the "career finding" process, but to then combine that component with the more concrete aspects of that process.Despite reviewing literally hundreds of books concerning this subject, I have never seen anything quite like the InnerQuest section of the material with it's related type categories. It is quite unique and spoke to me more than just about anything I had previously seen. Most material/services available today which stress the spiritual component of finding your vocation do not seem to be of much help in actually creating a vision of that vocation which can be concretely expressed. Most of the materials/services which stress the concrete aspects of discovering a career do not seem to be of much help in relating those aspects to what your soul/spirit is trying to express. The author was aware of the necessity to combine both components in a comprehensive and effective manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a holistic approach
This is a great book if you're stuck in a rut, or have out of the box thinking. The questions are philosophical not psychological and she offers a holistic view we all forget about. Specifically that we have many parts to our lives, "Physical", "Social" "Emotional", "Intellectual",and "Spiritual", and we are not souly our career, but should strive for balanced lives. This book should be required reading by every college grad, or return to mainstream mom!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars MAGICAL QUEST=SIMPLIFY YOUR CAREER CHOICE
Here's a refreshingly uplifting career book that I think people will really enjoy. While most books in this genre are lengthy and somewhat boring to read, Magical Quest is short and interesting without omitting any valuable content.

Like the best-selling "Parachute" book, this one has all the basic steps, various career options, exploratory exercises, resume templates, and ways to evaluate correctly. But Magical Quest is far easier to read, shorter, and more interesting (artistic touches).

This is a book you can skim through and skip from chapter to chapter. The author has a special talent with her freehand mindmapping techniques (you'll have to see it for yourself) that make this career defining book truly unique.

For the person looking for a more personal and enlightened approach to career decision-making, Magical Quest is a gem to be discovered. It's the short-version to choosing a fulfilling career (or personal quest) with all the important content and special artistic effects. ... Read more

...because you'll be laughing out loud!I tried reading Knocked Out on an airplane, to see if it was appropriate for my 12-year-old daughter/travellng companion.I had my hand over my mouth, practically weeping with the effort not to laugh out loud, so my daughter finally wrestled it away from me.Make no mistake - Georgia is a bit of an idiot, but her spirited narcissism and her unconventional vocabulary are nothing short of hilarious.I love her!

5-0 out of 5 stars More Confessions Please!
When I picked up the first book in this incredibly funny series I thought 'What the heck?' but I read it and I love it! All of the Georgia Nicholson books are hilarious. The book is written as her diary. The thing I love the most is the British slang. Great job Louis Rennison!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for schools
Life Lists is an awesome book.I want to purchase one for every classroom because it's so helpful for students and teachers!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book That Has Helped Me Through A Lot
This book has made a world of difference to me. It has a lists of almost everything teenagers, boys and girls, might be confused about in life. There are reasons not to do drugs and drink, ways to not be stressed out, ways to be safe and so much more. Whenever I have a problem with friends, familys, boys or I'm just stressed out, I can look in the index to find a list to help me with the problem that I'm going through right now. I loved this book because I felt that the author understood teens and writes in a way that expresses knowledge, not opinion. This book is a must for any teen.

5-0 out of 5 stars The resource that I wish I had had when I was a teenager
When I think of books written for teenagers, I usually think of authors who try to connect with teenagers by inspiring, pleading and sometimes scaring them into listening to their story; Which is why Life Lists for Teens pleasantly surprised me. There aren't any boring or overly dramatic stories; There are just great tips for making life a little less stressful for teenagers. In fact, there are hundreds of tips, hints and how-tos for growing up, getting along, learning, and having fun.

Pamela Espeland, the author of Life Lists for Teens, has spent countless hours researching and gathering together some of the most insightful and practical information for teenagers that I've ever seen. The conciseness of the lists, and the way the lists are organized, makes it easy for teenagers with a short attention span to get the most out of the book. Pamela Espeland even encourages young readers to write down or photocopy lists, so they can take their lists with them.

There are a total of 254 lists that are included in the following chapters:

    - Introduction
    - Health & Wellness
    - Getting Along
    - Staying Safe
    - School & Learning
    - Going Online
    - Planning Ahead
    - Saving the World
    - Focus On You
    - Just for Fun
    - Acknowledgements & Sources

This book is definitely the resource that I wish I had had when I was a teenager. All of us who are reading this (that is, who aren't teenagers right now) obviously survived our teenage years. However, I think Life Lists for Teens has the potential to help teenagers survive their teenage years with less stress, and hopefully less confusion. ... Read more

This book is so awesome. I love a lot it's one of my favorites! It's short stories are definitely page turner and I would recommend it to anyone. The stories are constantly talking about inspiration and hope.

It doesn't matter your belief or religion it's still a good book and has good advice for anyone. The poems and stories and occasional bible verses really taught to believe in myself and to be confident and to appreciate life.

I hope you enjoy reading and appreciating the meaningfulness of this book and if you enjoyed this book then you might enjoy reading Chicken Soup for the Christian Soul. There pretty similar but it's for all ages!

1-0 out of 5 stars Ugh...
Let me begin by saying that I myself am a teen.

Let me continue by saying that I would not recommended this book for the vast majority of the population. Unless your IQ is below 50, you probably won't gain anything from reading it.

This is a formulaic book which consists of 365 "affirmations" (or "affies", which teens supposedly call them). The central message of each "affie" (Be a Loving Person, Take Time to be Alone, Seek Support from Others) is listed at the top of the page. It is followed by a quote from either the authors or a teen. Then comes the body, consisting of a paragraph, which elaborates on the central theme. At the bottom is a "Taste-Berry Promise", which encourages the reader to do things such as "walk an elderly neighbor's dog" or "tell a friend something he or she doesn't know about what I believe in".

Rinse and repeat 364 times. That's the whole book.

No stories of men hiking alone in the wilderness, who get attacked by mountain lions, get their legs chewed off, and have to crawl 50 miles back to civilization, just to get a beer. Now that's inspiration.

Though this book is supposedly targeted towards teens, I genuinely believe that most of us would rather spoon out our eyeballs than waste our time reading this crap. What else can you expect from a "bestselling series". Read some Aristotle instead.

Unless you are a soccer mom who needs "discussion material" for a "bible study/inpirational book club" or something else along those lines, don't waste your time or money on this lame excuse for a "book".

All in all, they had 365 pages to tell you how to cope with problems the "Taste-Berry Way". But I can do better. I can tell you how to attack your problems the "Amwidkle" way, in three words.

Deal with it. ... Read more

This is a great book.I just wish there was more. It's a great faith builder and its not for just teens, it's for anyone.I'm looking forward to sharing this book with my kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reading
This is a very mis named book. It is not just for teens, but for anyone who needs a ray of sunshine in their life. In each of these true stories, we see God intervening in the lives of young people, often through angelic appearances, in such a way that lives are saved, or more importantly, changed. A runaway boy finds his way home, a hapless girl is able to escape an attacker in a way that could only be a miracle. A sister's prayer for her brother gives them extra time together. A girl who should not have even lived regains the use of her legs.

***** Real life is filled with the incredible, the miraculous. Many people want to dismiss the coming generations as being godless heathens. As long as there are a few who sparkle as the ones in this book, and as long as there is a God who has such great love for them, though, there is hope and there is joy. *****

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, great book!
I have been learning about Buddhism for a couple of years now and bought this book for my teenage daughter, in hopes that it would inspire her to join me. She hasn't read it yet, but I decided to pick it up off her shelf one day and read it myself. This book changed my life. It is written in very simple, easy to understand terms. I felt like Diana Winston was a good friend, walking the path with me and explaining things along the way. I loved it. And I am still hoping my daughter will join me!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book worked miracles for our 15 years old teenager
Our son was in very hard times, struggling to come to terms with the low values (if values) of modern society, modern music and his own background and values. With 14 he went into extrem aggression and anger. He sought refuge in hard rap, which on one side helped to work anger off, but fueled it from another side.

Since he started to read (and practice) this book, he changed tremendously.

I highly recommend this book to any teenager (or parents who wish to find help) with the wish for help.

    10 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars wake up sleepyhead!
This is a wonderful introduction to Buddhism.I have been sitting for several years and I am closer to middle-aged than teen-aged, but this book has a concise yet scholarly nature that presents Buddhist practice beautifully.

I want to buy this book for everyone I know, from my 13 year old god-daughter to my 93 year old grandfather.Diana Winston illuminates the beauty and difficulty of living honestly in the world. If I were to change one thing, I would make the subtitle read; "a Buddhist guide for teens and those who were once teens"

    Thanks Diana! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars When nothing mattered
Nothing mattered anymore, my grades went down, i didn't care about life, i wanted to die. so i attempted suicide, my wrist is scarred and mutated, everyone said i was insane. then i heard from the family circle magazine about this book, and i swear this has helped me, and i'm so glad that not everyone thinks depressed teens are insane or stupid. and i'm glad there are people like lisa hurka covington that are talking to teens how valuable life is, and helping them sort out their problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps teens take an active role in beating depression
This book combines compassion and empowerment with accurate information.

The author, a cousin of singer Curt Cobain, wrote this book to help make sense of her cousin's suicide. It is readable, knowledgeable and thorough. It helps adolescents understand what they might be feeling when they are depressed. It discusses how to interrupt the downward spiral and find a way out. The book covers both social and biological aspects of depression.

I felt that the author had a good intuitive grasp for how an adolescent might feel when he was in the depths of a depression. She reflects back the sense of isolation and hopelessness so that a depressed person feels understood. She provides information on how to get help when you don't feel that anyone out there is trustworthy.

She empowers teens by providing good information about the causes of depression and well as the treatments. For those who want more detailed information, she provides a resource list. I especially liked her section on how to stay healthy once you have recovered from the initial depression.

I have recommended this book to several teens. They felt that it made sense and was helpful

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Like Most
Of all the self-help books I found, this one struck me the most.

Bev Cobain doesn't treat us like we're five years old or treat us like we're idiots for being depressed. She gives us help, and advice in an organized handbook like format. She steps this into two phases - What's Wrong and Getting Help and Staying Well. I also like how she makes it personal - adding things about her cousin Kurt Cobain but also including other depressed teen stories - proving I'm not alone. I'm almost finished with the book and am into getting some help for my depression.

I'd recommend this book to any depressed teen, any school councelor, or any one interested in teen depression and want to be informed on it incase they stumble upon it sometime in their lives. Good Book -. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good read
this is a good read for anyone who has to deal with verbal abuse. I feel like the title is a little misleading, as I have found this book very helpful in dealing with my mother and I am 28 yrs old. Although, I wish this book had been around when I was a teen, it probably would've made growing up with an abusive parent a lot easier. It is very insightful and gives helpful advice on recognizing patterns and "tricks" and also dealing with the verbal abuse. I also feel like I will be a better parent myself for reading this book. Much thanks to the author !

5-0 out of 5 stars Teach your children to recognize and reject verbal abuse.
There is nothing that a survivor of verbal abuse wants more than to spare their children the devastation of a lifetime exposure to verbal abuse.Unfortunately, for those who have not felt it, or cannot wrap their mind around the concept and articulate it, the concept of verbal abuse, and its devastating effects, can seem very abstract.Teen Torment, as I read it, took the concept of verbal abuse, presenting it and analyzing it in a context that everyone has experienced (as a teen).Teen Torment presents an analysis of verbal abuse in a context which anyone who has experienced teen life has lived through. Thus making the concept of verbal abuse less abstract, and far easier to grasp and understand. The beauty of this approach is that once a person learns to identify verbal abuse in the context of teen life, they are much better prepared to recognize it in the context of intimate relationships. An added bonus is that a victim in a verbally abusive relationship can read this book without drawing the critical attention of the abuser, as the title (Teen Torment) does not immediately reveal a topic which the abuser, at first glance, might find threatening. In short, this is a great book on verbal abuse that has application to all people who seek to gain a greater understanding of verbal abuse, and particularly for parents who desire to spare their children from the torment of verbal abuse.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must read
Provides a great reference in understanding verbal abuse and what a devestating impact it has on a teen. Many adults can relate to this too and perhaps see themselves as victims from their past. This book will also help others evaluate their "blind spots" and recheck verbal messages they are sending. "Everyone" should read this! ... Read more
