Someone bought this book for me from my yoga class and I thought I would pick up a few new tips. It was okay nothing to write home about- maybe good for someone who doesn't know how to exercise. There are better books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars got me moving again
While no book could replace hands on instruction, this book comes close. This is the book that got me moving again after years of struggle with chronic back pain.Rather than a "one size fits all" approach, the book encourages one to review the evidence of your body and carefully approach the problem.I wonder where I would be if I hadn't run into this book a few years ago.Try it, it may save your back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide!
Very complete book with daily routines in the back. The description of exercises is extremely thorough.Much more complete than many other books out there.I have been through some rough times with my back and shoulders, and have searched widely for guidance to help me take care of myself - this one is a keeper.Doctors and Chiropractors are wonderful - but the ultimate responsibility is ours. ... I have taken yoga classes for years and it is nice to see the medical doctor values such a art to help back pain suffers. This book is okay for someone new to yoga and has back pain but it is over 10 years old. needs to be updated. I recommend other up to date books on the market today that shows the reader all forms of exercies to use to over come back pain.

I am a big fan of yoga , but this book had very little to offer in new subject matter for those who have taken any typeof yoga classes- knos that the instructors always remind us not to do certain positions that may and most likly cause further pain to our necks or backs. I think if you are a beginer then this is a good start but better to try out a class where a teacher can tell you what you are doing wrong. ... Read more

Suffering from crippling back pain recently, for the first time in my life, I was desperate for a solution, and knew it would have to be a long-term remedy because as a naturally active person, I never wanted to be so disabled ever again.

While waiting for this chosen book (the "Naturally" part of the title caught my eye) to arrive in the mail, I was treated by a chiropractor and out of desperation, ingested a few muscle relaxing pills.Nothing I tried, worked...until reading this back-saving book of hope.

"Healing Back Pain Naturally:The Mind-Body Program Proven To Work" is written by a medical doctor who keeps his promise to any who seriously seek a workable, long-term plan of back pain relief and maintenance thereafter.

Dr. Art Brownstein, having "been there, done that", even undergoing back surgery in his quest at ending many years of back pain and problems, knows back pain intimately. In his experience, we are granted both his medical knowledge and the formulas compiled, first for himself, later tried, tested and true for his many patients and readers.

My favorite chapter of the book was "The Back To Life Stretching Program" because the exercises really work, and I continue to refer to them at least twice a week in order to keep all that surrounds the spine strong and flexible. Each exercise is understandably explained and includes a photograph of the exercise in progress as well as its benefits, from a medical standpoint. For instance, the "Cobra Pose" stretch "...helps to open up the disc spaces while stretching and strengthening not only the back muscles, but also the abdominal muscles, which help to support the spine from the front."

"Healing Back Pain Naturally" explains the connection between accumulated stress, ill-feelings and bad habits to the manifestation of back pain.Dr. Brownstein equally gives many workable solutions to these banes of our lifestyles in a way that makes much sense.

The holistic patient/reader will be treated in a kindly way and invited to join his own body's healing with tips in eating right, given natural supplements and herbs specifically for healing, deep relaxation techniques, taught to listen to their own body, including pain's lesson/message, and many more tools, bits of knowledge and practices for a healthier lifestyle.

Being a well-written book offering hope and help, I plan to keep this one around. It was worth every bit of its price and then some.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of info and...read on
This is a very well written book with lots of information incompassing a good body/mind approach as well as the authors personal plight with back pain. If you are already familar with yoga, fitness, excerice, holistic and natural lifestyle then this book will have little new perhaps to offer. It is a great book for those who are unfamilar or who have been on the periphery. The excercises are nothing new!!!..its basically yoga. This "miracle" or "special" excercises sell is getting to be very tiring and misleading after awhile..for this buyer at least. I would caution use of the excercise that has you hang you head over the bed backwards as there are certain health conditions where that moments blood pressure to the head could cause problems and also it can introduce neck strain. Also on page 111 is a very dangerous movement and egronomically terrible. Most people get over because their body is relatively healthy and can withstand the wrong movments but no benefit is of gain. The demonstrator is totally off posture jutting his head, belly out. That knee back bend postition is popular one...also good to snap your knee cap or over/wrongly stretch ligaments. Most people will do this excercise wrong just in terms of the body alingment. On the other hand it is quite awkward in of itself not to mention no benefit or injurous to the back!. This brings me to the next point. To do these excercises you have to be NOT in enough back pain to be able to do them. These excercises require enough flexibily and bending not available at some stages of back pain. Its good though that reading some other reviews people seemed to be able to benefit even if a stiff start in the beginning. The downside is that doing excercises just because you can doesn't mean you are doing the right thing for your body. Be sure you are at the best stage of progress or healing. The book however, offers much precautions, encouragements, sound councel and tips throughout the book several times over in a various ways. It is a very good book not withstanding what is abovementioned about it that I find not helpful and as mentioned at the beginning of this review is good for those who would like a comprenhesive look in a new direction for themselves.

I got this book as a gift and i think after reading it" only if it was that easy to forget about your pain!" I think the book tells us the strong link between the mind and pain but doesn't offer anything new when it comes to solving the problem of pain through exercises which 99% of todays experts say is the best solution to back or neck pain. Invest in an updated book that tells you how to exercise anywhere. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery, or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain--Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)--and isn't really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don't work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and limbs--and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind's effort to repress emotions. He's not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, he's saying that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in ("and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough"), the trick doesn't work any more, and there's no need for the pain. (Healing Back Pain should not be used for self-diagnosis. Always consult a physician for chronic or acute back pain.) --Joan Price ... Read more

I have noticed in reading several of the reviews that claim this book to be quackery were from people who did not mention any back pain in thier lives just quackery expertise. Also Doctors whose business would be threatened by this book weighed in negatively. I bought this book after learning that Sarno solved the back problems of ABC's John Stossell and Howard Stearn. If you can think of two more skeptical people than that let me know who they are. Book is light on exact instructions but the premise is enough to have solved my pain by 75%.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book that changed my life.
I started having back pains at 18 years old! During my 20s I tried everything an old lady is used too; sleeping on the floor, ice packs, warm baths, even medication and my life was starting to orbit around my back condition. During my 30s I ended up in the hospital 3 times due to paralysing back pain. X-Rays and CAT scans showed a non-perfect spine but not enough to justify 2 decades or suffering.

One day I was watching CNN and Larry King was talking to a Dr. John Sarno and discussing this new book about back pain... I heard it all and decided to buy the book. Well, the rest is history, I can have a normal life again and I never ended up in the hospital again.

Now and then when I'm more stressed I have a little back pain and my husband jokingly calls it "having a case of Sarno"! I just relax and it goes away in a couple of hours.

I recommend the book to new friends all the time and many come back with a smile saying the same; that the book changed their lives.

    Thank you Dr. Sarno!

After 7 years completely pain free, I am in a fundamentally different place than someone who is struggling to find a cure today - and only now is reading reviews of Dr. Sarno's book on Amazon. However, I will try to paint the picture of why you should get this book yesterday!

After falling violently on the ice some 12 years ago (when I was 25), I spent 5 years in progressively worsening levels of pain.My first attack of back pain (for me, it was just below my right shoulder blade)was a good two years before my next, but then it was a year, then 6 months, then it was chronic.I tried everything from whole bottles of advil - to chyropractic - to osteopathic - to massage therapy - 2 MRIs - 100% natural diet with no drugs of any kind - I was even diagnosed with Fibromyalgia at one point (and I'm a guy!).Finally, I was headed for surgery - Although no surgeon could guarantee they would fix my problem.A friend gave me an old dog-eared version of this book - it had been handed around several people. To say I was skeptical that a $12 paperback could alleviate my agony would be the understatement of the decade.

I read the book 3 times in 2 days.3 weeks later, I was pain free, and have been ever since.

The theory and practice of Dr. John Sarno are not only sound, they saved my life.I went from occasional thoughts of suicide (unimaginable to me now or before the pain) to where I was yesterday:playing in an extremely competitive adult soccer league with mostly 20somethings (I'm now 37) and scoring goals.

I have given this book to well over 2 dozen people.None has read the book and not had a positive result.

If you haven't heard enough yet, please save yourself and your family any more pain and get the book now!!!

One comment regarding content:This version of Sarno's work is the best for a first timer to his theories, and thus, the most powerful. If you want to learn more about the medical evidence and minutia, get the Mind-Body Prescription. But, at a minimum, get this book. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Dr. John Sarno caused quite a ruckus back in 1990 when he suggested that back pain is all in the head. In his bestselling book, Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection, he claimed that backaches, slipped discs, headaches, and other chronic pains are due to suppressed anger, and that once the cause of the anger is addressed, the pain will vanish. Relieved Amazon.com readers call this book "liberating" and say "it sounds too good to be true, but it is true." Sarno has returned with The Mindbody Prescription, in which he explains how emotions including guilt, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem can stimulate the brain to manufacture physical symptoms including fibromyalgia, repetitive strain injuries, migraine headaches, hay fever, colitis, ulcers, and even acne. If these psychosomatic problems all sound a little Freudian, what with the repression of emotions in the unconscious, it's because Sarno unapologetically borrows from Freud for the basis of his theory and cites childhood trauma as a major source of emotional problems. He also says that his program is a "talking cure" of sorts, since patients must be convinced their pain is rooted in their emotions before healing can begin.

The book reads a bit like psychology text, with Sarno quoting from psychoanalytic theorists including Heinz Kohut and Graeme Taylor and the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition). Sarno walks through the neurophysiology of mindbody disorders, lists the symptoms of dozens of disorders that he believes are emotion-based, and offers a basic program for overcoming psychosomatic pain and illness. His recovery plan includes meditation and sometimes psychotherapy, including behavior modification, and stopping any medication or physical therapy. While Sarno's ideas seem radical, they were commonly implemented earlier in the 20th century, when psychoanalysis was at its peak of popularity, and they promise to become more accepted in our current era of alternative medical therapies and anger management. --Erica Jorgensen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Whole New Way to Think About Health and Medicine
This is a fantasic book and Dr. Sarno has done invaluable, scientifically sound work. Now, how do we make his knowledge work for us; how do we starting applying it right away?
First, a few of the basics. 1. There is no way to utilize Dr. Sarno's research without dealing with the psychology of our unconscious minds. Most people are unfamiliar with this, so it takes some getting used to. If you have any skepticism regarding "the unconscious brain," maybe even doubting its existence, then this will be a barrier for you in benefiting from Dr. Sarno's research. Try to be open-minded and unafraid to own up to your own repressed emotions. A common mistake made by many health professionals is to cite conscious emotions as the cause, or part of the cause, of various health problems. For example, when I handed my doctor a copy of Sarno's book, he said, "I am already well aware that `stress on the job' is the #1 cause of back pain." But simply saying "stress" or "tension" is the culprit misses the point! We have to accept that it is our job to root out the sources of our repressed, uncomfortable feelings that are currently hidden from us.
    2. That said, we don't have to change those feelings or make them vanish. Rather, we have to try to bring them to light and, if possible, sit with them. Once our attention is on the emotions, day in and day out, then the purpose of the pain or other distraction fades away.
    3. Dr. Sarno's treatment program is not aspirin. You don't pick up his book on the days you hurt and then throw it down when you feel better. Dr. Sarno's books are a long-term means for us to re-think how we understand pain and bodily disorders (turns out that most of them are not pathological). Without diligently following through on this re-thinking process, future relaspe is a matter of course.
    4. No matter how bad your bodily problems are (and there are hundreds that could be at work), they are not the real problems. Let me say that again, the pain is not your biggest worry! It is so easy to wistfully think, "If only I were well, then my life would be perfect." I'm sorry, but that's not true. Rather, once you are well, you are then more able to focus on the anxiety, anger, low self-esteem, and past events that deserved your attention from the very beginning. In so far as you avoid these subjects, you encourage any available distraction that your brain might utilize to boost your complacency. Be strong and don't give up! To be specific, you've got to sit down for 15-30 minutes every morning and evening and go over the things in your life and your history that gall the heck out of your childish, selfish unconscious brain. This is the basis of the therapy. It is like homework. But really, it is medicine. The 15-30 minute sessions allow you to gradually absorb what Dr. Sarno has said, apply it to your own unique life, and talk to your brain. You have to banish the fear of physical disorders with facts and those facts need time to sink in. Plus, you have to develop new habits of mental reflection. It takes a lot of patience and maybe sounds bizarre, but we ought to consider how little we know about this field of mind-body medicine. No one is expected to be good at it right away.
Strategies to use for self-therapy during your morning/evening sessions: take notes on ways that you put pressure on yourself, write down things that come to mind so you can review them many times. Talk to your brain. If you can lecture to your brain cogently, then you probably have Dr. Sarno's findings well summarized. Re-read sections of his books. Watch the videos available (Mumbleypeg Productions). Balance your reflection sessions. Don't just review the concepts of mind-body medicine. Be careful also to do sincere emotional exploration. It's easy to avoid (heck, the whole program is easy to avoid). And, it's easy to focus on just one aspect (say, your relationship with a specific family member). But there are many possible aspects. Most of them quite unspectacular when compared to trauma and abuse, for example. Trauma and abuse might be the case for you, but there's no need to have a troubled past to suffer severely. Just being a mature adult provides more than enough for a full "mental closet."

Don't let the turkeys get you down. Few people will understand what you are doing during your morning and evening sessions. And, you might have to continue for many months. No need to worry. You get to learn more about yourself and your emotional reactions. Believe it or not, but it's truly a great opportunity. As Freud said, "Being totally honest with ourselves is a very beneficial exercise." Are *you* willing to be honest about, say, inner anger toward loved ones? It's no easy pill to swallow, but you aren't the first. Human psychology has its shocking revelations, but we all share them.

Consider that a real revision of our understanding of health is in order. Starting with stress, it is important to note that stress is basically universal. To be a normal mature adult is to endure stress. However, accusing someone of being "stressed out" often evokes hostile reactions. We are taught that experiencing stress equals a failure to properly cope and deal with one's life. But don't be lied to! Alas, misinformation abounds and we are lied to regularly (yes, doctors will provide lab results about, say your poor adrenal glands. But don't take that malarkey. This is about your brain, not your body). The name of the game is not to magically live a stress-free life. That ain't possible! Rather, it's to admit the stress, point it out, bring it to light, and take the drama out of it. Sure, none of your friends might be doing this, but they probably don't know the wisdom that Dr. Sarno has collected for us, either.

If you are active, congratulations on your exercise program. But, don't think it is a cure for back pain. Let's just let the cat out of the bag right now. Yoga is great. Swimming, jogging, cycling, etc. are blessed and holy, but no one ever got back pain from a lack of yoga so it doesn't follow that yoga cures the root cause. And likewise no one ever got back pain from a lack of physical therapy. So why do yoga and physical therapy sometimes work? Well, that's a long story, but they usually only work temporarily at best. But, by all means, if they work for you, don't stop! Read Dr. Sarno, though, and you'll see that the pain or chronic fatigue or depression is not a bodily or biochemical issue what so ever! It is all initiated by the brain, so the route to curing it is also through the brain. If you avoid this fact, you will avoid getting over TMS and it's host of equivelants. Throw away the pills and prescriptions. Get down to work. 15-30 minutes twice a day. Do it as long at you have to. And never look back. You're in good hands. The data has not been fudged. This therapy works. I owe my active life to Dr. Sarno's program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Breakthrough!!!
It works, it works it works! As a practicing hypnotherapist specializing in chronic illness and chronic pain,I finally know how I have succeeded with my own clients. So many times after having intuitively shaped the sessions as we went along, I have wondered just what it was that we had done that accounted for the clients relief. Now I know. Not only that, but now that I have his refined "blueprint" for success, I can get those results more frequently. My interest in using the mind to overcome pain was fueled in 1998 after watching the BBC program featuring Dr. Angel Esqudero use his "noesitherapy" the operate while the patient conversed with him...without any form of anesthesia! I have conversed with Angel via email several times and there is a definite link between his approach and Dr. Sarno's. Let me say however that Dr. Sarno has a much more streamlined program, and has obviously worked the bugs out. Diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 1997, I had used hypnosis, NLP and other approaches to control and alter my pain successfully, but it was always in the background. Dr. Sarno literally taught me how to ELIMINATE my pain once and for all. Simply amazing! I have always enjoyed working with Chronic pain clients as they come in highly motivated and ready for change. If you are in such a position and would like to finally rid yourself of your aches and pains....get this book, read it repeatedly, follow the instructions, and I'm betting that you too will be FREE of your condition!

If you suffer from chronic back pain, give this a go, what do you have to lose. It worked for me after a year of hell and near immobility.

This is a structured approach to figuring out the psychological causes for your pain. It really works.

What more can I say, I have resumed all activities and new ones to boot. I never consider my back before trying something anymore. This has been a complete about turn.

"I'm a chiropractor and interested in the totality of healing--mechanical, chemical, and psychological.I find that Dr. Schechter's 'MindBody Workbook' is unique in that in provides a simple, easy to follow, format for my patients to focus their energies on healing emotionally. The workbook is concise and to the point. The questions provide a starting point for journalling and gently guide the patient to deeper levels of emotional insight.

In my experience, and the research supports this, the emotional healing greatly enhances the structural and chemical healing. It all works together. This helps my treatments be more effective.

Compared to even a single psychotherapy session, the price is a bargain.I highly recommend the book for psychological insight and emotional healing."

After reading all the great reviews, I must say that I was disappointed with this book. You can get the same effect by just writing in a diary every day about how you feel about the pain, what it prevents you from doing, how others responded to you, etc. I also thought it was overpriced. I returned it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing .Advice possibly damaging.
The author of this book teaches the reader to talk down to their sub-conscious and treat it with disrespect. His advice tells the reader to treat the subconcious as a child.

A healthy individual makes friends with his/her subconcious. They become partners. They do not "beat up" their subconcious like the author teaches. Treating your subconcious with such disrespect as this book recommends is harmful . How can you love yourself if you disrespect a large part of yourself (the subconcious)?

A friend gave me this book and told me it had helped him get rid of his back pain. He said it could help my carpal tunnel. It certainly did. I read it and got rid of years of carpal tunnel as well as the doctors, chiroprators, therapists, pills, shots, etc. Read this book and get well. By the way, the book's website www.rapidrecovery.net is a great resource.

After reading an article about Dr. Sarno, I saw a link to this book. At first I felt all these people were crazy if they thought they could "think away" back pain. However, as a formerly athletic, active person who was more and more debilitated every day, I decided I had nothing to lose. Result of doing the exercizes in the book - I can walk, run, jump, kneel, do yoga, play with my grandchildren. I recommend this book and the forum on Fred Amir's website to anyone suffering any type of pain. ... Read more
