5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book
It has source C code available, which I found is very helpful. It would be better if its code is written in C++.

5-0 out of 5 stars Muy buena referencia

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Scope
This book is very helpfull. Not only for image processing. An unsuspected use that I do to this book was use an algorithm for correct blurred images to revert effect of movil mean that produce a strain gage when one sense ancompresion wave traveling throw an iron bar, and work very well. This bookhas an "honor place" in my library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Image Analysis Book Review
I found the book to be very informative and I acquired several ideas from reading it. But, I repeatedly found myself searching the book for definitions of some of the terms it uses throughout its text. Practical Algorithms for Image Analysis will introduce new terms without any hint of their meaning, assuming that the reader already knows all they need to know about the subject matter (which would negate the need to buy the book!). This book sorely needs a glossary.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's just great
The book is just great! I used the source code from the CD-ROM for various image processing projects. The algorithms are also very practical if you have to deal with images. The code is neat and ready to compile and run.

Also this book is good on the description of image process and image analysis algorithms. I read the whole book and use it as a reference during my programming. It sits in my bookshelf and I use it almost everyday.

I recommend anybody who wishes to do serious image programming to have this book. It's just great!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Overall Book - Lot of typos and bugs.
I am currently enrolled in a computer vision class and we used the book to write a lot of the code for image processing. So far we have found a lot of typos and bugs in the code which wasted a lot of time in getting this to work. Some like an incorrectly calculated quadratic formula where easy to see in Major Axis but others like errors in the Moments code took a lot of debugging to find.Would love a second revised edition with the code thoroughly checked for errors.Oh and it turns out that the Major Axis code does not even work correctly, allowing the major and minor axis to switch after 90 degrees of rotation, this is something you probably wouldn't notice using it to process a static image but you can see when working with live video.I understand that this book is meant for people already in the field but that is not an excuse for writing bad code.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Author's Comment
Potential buyers, please keep in mind that this book is for people that already know image processing theory or are enrolled in a course. We wrote this book for the student engineer to rapidly be able to code algorithms. They are very simply written, more so for understanding and ease of typing (most are one small page) than for algorithmic elegance or efficiency. Note that the book is very small and has a soft leatherette cover--this is so it fits comfortably in your back pocket and can be pulled out as needed. There is no CD, type the code in yourself and learn as you go. Some things are done for a reason, enjoy!

1-0 out of 5 stars Utter Disappointment
Total absence of theory.Algorithms very poorly documented. However, it does open the eyes to the available algorithms in image processing. If you want to know how they really work, look elsewhere. At > $30, this book is an utter dissaapointment. At $3., it would have earned 4 stars. The least the authors could do is publish a CD to go along. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive book for almost everyone
The book gives a comprehensive treatment on image processing and covers the appropriate amount of information. The depth of materials was appropriate for someone already familiar with basic signal and probability theories. This is definitely the book to keep as reference if you plan to work in the area.An additional chapter on image reconstruction will be extra helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for beginners in image proc. and comp. vision!
If you want to learn about the algorithms for computer vision and image processing and know algebra, thenthis book seems ideal. The author'sstyle seems very accessible, and the examples show just enough mathematics to give the book some substance. Moreover, you get free image processingand computer vision software! It wouldbe surprised if there were a betteralgebra-based introductory book out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great package!
I found this to be a well written and insightful book. The text is supported by an abundance of figures and graphics and, more importantly, by the companion software on CD ROM, which is also available online (at nocharge!).I would strongly recommend this book to any student/teacher ofcomputer vision and/or image processing. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the beginner
Book uses a very analytical approach. Concepts are very poorly explained and derviations are not explained. As a text this book is well suited as a review for graduate level students. Using the word introductory in the title is very misleading. Do not recommend this book to those looking for an introduction to the world of computer vision.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best textbook for computer vision
This is the best textbook for computer vision I've ever met. Compared with Forsyth and Ponce's heavy book titled with "computer vision: a modern approach", this book is very concise, precise, and suitable to be used in classes. Definitions are carefully given. Pseudocode is extremely helpful for practical use. Also some sections about mathematics are appreciated to understand the underlying algorithms. If you want to learn more or do research, then read Forsyth's book after finishing reading this book. Several my collegues think this book is the first choice for new comers in this field.

2-0 out of 5 stars My head almost exploded!
I originally purchased this book for a graduate-level computer vision course.I found the book more obfuscating than helpful. For example, Trucco and Verri's discussion of PCA/SVD, a topic I know quite a bit about, left me confused and frustrated.Unfortunately, their treatment of other topics is not any better.

I have since used the book as a reference on a couple occasions. My opinion of the book has been raised only slightly since my first read, taking my rating all the way up to two stars ;).I suggest that you DO NOT waste your money on this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not that good
During my master thesis I read parts of this book. One thing I can say about it, is that if you don't know projective geometry when beginning to read this book, you will not learn it from here. Yes, Faugeras probably has a very intuitive feel for this field of science but he does not explain his ideas in a pedagogical manner. My advise is, read the book and get the idea, then read some other book to do it. Faugeras will not tell you how.

I got this confirmed from two other sources as well, after discovering it myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to geometry in computer vision.
If you are a beginner in computer vision and can't understand geometry in it, you need a copy of this book. It is the most comprehensive book I have ever seen and answers nearly every question you could have about geometryin computer vision. Especially for those who have familiar with imageproceeing. It really coincide with its subtitle "A GeometricViewpoint". It also emphasize on mathematics and formulate clearly. Before I read the book,I have nothing about the camera calibration andepipolar geometry, now I am familiar with them. I always recommend it to myfriends in computer vision. In a word, it is a bible of computer vision. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much printed source code...
This is a beginners book for grey and bi-level image processing. This book is kept in a simple language, and is mathematically not too demanding either. However, it covers a lot of printed source code which is not supplied on a cd or floppy.

Most mathematical equations are given in blocks of C-code, so that the reader first has to figure out what the relevant mathematical equation might be. This bookdemands only some basic understanding of C, and as the author righly says (p.124): "Although the philosophy in this book is to present code that is as clear and simple as possible, rather than presenting the niftiest algorithms and most highly optimized coding technique, it should be pointed out that there are faster ways to scan through all of the pixels of an image".

For those of you looking to enter the wild and wacky world of image processing, this book is all you need! 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting combination of topics.
I like this book.It has been very useful many times. It covers a great deal of ground. It covers topics not commonly seen together.I would recommend as an interesting perspective for computer vision researchers or as an excellent reference for those working in information retreival.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful but ....
This book is definitely NOT for new students in machien vision. This books also contains major error in stereo vision process. The mathematical formulation they have derived for stereo camera calibration is wrong and hence not possible to implement. The book does not describe any details of the method.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good text but expensive in the US.
This book is OK as a rather non-mathematical introduction to image processing at an advanced undergraduate level.
The "analog" approach to signal and image processing is not covered extensively. There is more emphasis on algorithmic aspects. Frequency analysis is kept to a minimum and one-dimensional signals such as speech are not covered extensively or at all, although some aspects of analog processing are more easily explained in a 1-D context.
Maybe just as well from an image analysis/computer vision standpoint. Indeed, many other textbooks exist with more emphasis on base functions and transforms (but then they are utterly lacking in the algorithmic approach).

More down to earth, though. I know that my students would be turned off by the US price of $115. Hardly appropriate for the less affluent student ! Especially since the UK Amazon price is £37.Same ISBN.Luckily, in Europe, we can order from the UK store. ... Read more
