The worst textbook I have ever seen
I just finished Chapter 3 of this book, but I have had enough of it. Conceptions about Fourier Transform are not clear at all.And the most unbearable thing is that, there are many printing errors which may lead to misunderstanding.

Algorithms and much more!
The subject of wavelets has many facets, --infinite in all directions;-- some of the more exciting sides of the subject
are algorithmic, and the underlying mathematical principles are both simple and powerful. Stephane Mallat's great, and readable, book, in both of its editions, brings
this out wonderfully!

Lots of new additions.
Of the many recent books on wavelets, this one by Jaffard, Meyer et al stands out. This is a new edition of earlier ones, starting with a French one, then a first translation, and now this expanded version. There is lots of new material, covering new developments, both with regards to theory and applications. The authors communicate the main points in a clear and attractive way, and it stresses lucid presentation of ideas over formulas. And with an infectious enthusiasm! The presentation is especially refreshing, in that the authors do not hide behind excessive technicalities and mathematical jargon. It is the central idea that shines through. And yet the mathematically sophisticated reader is paid his dues,-- in some cases via the appendices. At that point, the technical mathematical points have been well motivated. The emphasis of the book is the mathematics behind the many algorithms that emerged from the wavelet trends since the 1980ties. And lots of new stuff added (for example JPEG-2000), right up to the present. The book is rich in applications, many of which are not found elsewhere. The inclusion of motivation and historical remarks is welcome, and makes the book enjoyable reading.

Good covering of wavelets applications
Although this book emphasis is on algorithms and applications, the general presentation of wavelets for signal processing is great. The introduction to the subject is really excellent and great care has been given to explaining the use of wavelets for applications in signal processing. On the other side i found the last chapters dealing with applications a little too light for being useful...

Not a self contained book!
I bought this book with the intent of understanding the level set method AND be able to implement it in code.The book fails on the later.He gives you some basic formulas/algorithms to start with, but they are not good enough for most problems.You need to get the references (and the references of those references) to obtain the actual algorithms people use to implement the level set method.

The first six chapters are good for giving you a nice qualitative understanding of the method and the issues of implementing the method.And the rest of the book claims to show you the more advanced techniques, but whenever the nitty gritty details are needed, he refers you to the references.

My advice: just get his references.If you are at a university, then you probably have free access to the online journals that contain his (and others) research articles.In fact, this book is basically a copy-paste of those articles!Literally!

Not for beginners
I am afraid that this book is not for beginners who want to have a clear mind of the level set method. You will have to go to the library quite often to dig out all the references the author mentioned. I would say this book is for experienced researchers only.

excellent
This book is ABSOLUTELY among the best in the area of computational mathematics.It covers from the basics to the trendy applications, which is the biggest satisfaction I got from spending money on it.It is more than a collection of papers (no kidding!), since the contents have a good interior coherence if you read it carefully rather than browsing it like a novel.And for the those fancy pictures in the book, all I can say is that 'a picture is worth than thousands of words' - it is especially true in the area of graphics.You guys who care about SIGGRAPH should know better.More than that, this book does give you the numerical recipe for you to DIY these simulations on your own computer, besides the mathematics behind all those sexy results.Anyway, this book is worth every penny you spent!

Disappointing
The book is merely a collection of (way too shortened) papers from the same authors and others. Most of the time there is no coherent link between the different parts. Worst, there are many examples but very little details for each of them, when I start reading a chapter, I always end up getting the related papers from the internet which are in most cases clearer and more complete, and also there are free.

I really respect the achievement made in cg, image processing, and computational physics made by the authors (so I will give it 2 stars), but once you are done looking at the fancy pictures, you won't get much from this book apart from its bibliographic references.

I would rather recommend the book "Level set methods and fast marching methods" from J.A. Sethian, the mathematical aspects are better covered and it manages to take things into perspective while still remaining very practical.

guide on the application of the level set method in vision
In this volume various contributors demonstrate how efficient variational and level set methods can be in the domain of computer vision.

A significant spectrum of applications are considered from well-known researchers of the domain (Osher, Terzopoulos, Faugeras, Grimson, Willsky, Sapiro, Vemuri, Rudin, Lions, etc.). The vision part is the strongest one, some applications on image processing and some topics on graphics are addressed. One criticism on the book is the absence of some contribution from Sethian's group one of the pioneers in domain. Other than that this book is a good guide to the level set methodology and its application in the processing of visual information and graphics. I can definitely recommend this book.

an excellect collection of topics
This book features a collection of approx. 15 different topics (often with more than one chapter per topic). Segentation, grouping and stereo are the most well addressed areas. There is some variation on the complexity of the chapters where in some cases a more in depth mathematical point of view is considered. The volume gives an idea on what level set methods can do in imaging, vision and graphics. I recommend this book to people who are interested in mathematics and vision. I think that is a good addition tothe existing level set literature from the imaging, vision and graphics point. It focuses more on the application of this method to various topics.

A reference
Caution !! this book does NOT contain an index !!

Beside that, this book is a collection of papers, not for beginners.
You should first read Oshler's other book "Level Set Method and dynamic Imlict Surface" or the Sethian's original book. After reading these and you you still want more, then move to this book.

Numerical Geometry of Images
A very well-written, interesting and useful book covering a wide range of topics in image processing and computer vision and beyond. A good balance between theory and implementation issues that make the things work. A 100% recommendation to students and specialists in the field.

Worst academic treatment
-If you don't know snakes and deformables at all, this book won't help you; if you already know, this book won't tell u more.

-Fundamental math missing, like the enery minimization part.
