4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for researchers in this field.
It contains 31 chapters, begins from image processing methods, and OCR stages all the way to post processing stages. At the first glance I thought it was a collection of papers in some conference, but then I found that it not, although each chapter has the look and feel of a paper (Abstract, Introduction, ..., References) it seams that the editors has selected separate authors to write each chapter of the book as a stand alone. This book is more like a reference book than a page to page reading. It covers most part of the OCR system, and has dedicated special chapters for languages like Chinese, Japanese, Korean Hangul, and even Arabic Characters. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars a decent book
This book gives a good summary of theory as well as algorithm (in C code written to illustrate the algorithm rather than optimal performance). If you are looking for a high-level book that throughly explains theory then this is not the one. If you want theory and some example code then this is a good buy. The bibliography at the end of each chapter gives great pointers of where to go for more detailed theory. I would recommend this to students in image processing or professionals who have to acquire image processing skills.

My only major complaint is the low quality example pictures. They are small and all in black and white. Otherwise I would have given this book 4 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book !
    This book is just GREAT.
It covers almost every single ascpect of image and video processing. Everything is in deep and very good explained. A lot of before-and-after example pictures (important ones in color) are provided too. But beware. You need a fairly good understanding of math to read the book. It is not intended to explain how to use Photoshop, but rather how to write your own ;-)
This book is not a read-along book. Sometimes you have to read a section 2 or 3 times to understand it.
I think sometimes a good Snippet of C-Code would help to understand, but this is acceptable.
Again: A outstanding book, which fully covers all my needs.
The price of 100 us$ is ok, because it's a lot of a book...

4-0 out of 5 stars Image Processing for the mathematically inclined
This is an encyclopedia of image processing topics. It contains some introductory material to help people understand what images are and how to process them. The majority of the text, however, is for experiencedpeople wanting to look up topics.

This book is big.It is about 8"x11" by 900 pages. It contains material from 100 different professionals on 50 different topics.

The style is academic. The editor is the editor of the IEEE Transactions on Image Processing. The page style is similar to what you would see in an IEEE Transaction.

There is plenty of math. The text explains the mathematics, but not to the depth I would like to see.

The authors illustrate the techniques with many images. If there are no "before and after" images in an image processing book, reject it.Well, this book has plenty of images. That is a strong point.

A week point is there is no source codeillustrating the techniques and algorithms.I find this a major weakness, but one that is not unique to this book.

The authors leave much to the reader. This is not a read from cover to cover book. The reader must go slow, take notes, study, and read again to understand the material.

All in all, this is a good source of knowledge on image processing. If you work with images and write software to process images, you should have this book on your desk. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book
It has source C code available, which I found is very helpful. It would be better if its code is written in C++.

5-0 out of 5 stars Muy buena referencia

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive JPEG book for programmers
This book is a "must have" for anyone interested in understanding the JPEG standard. It has two distinct parts.
The second half is the JPEG standard itself. It contains all the technical details of how JPEG works, including pseudocode flow charts, and test data to verify JPEG compliance.
The first half is the author's (less formal) understanding of the JPEG standard, where he explains the details of the standard which might be unclear to the novice.
Everything from the aspects of the human visual system, to the mathematics of Discrete Cosine Transformation, to entropy coding, to JPEG file organization is explained.
I knew nothing about image processing before studying this book. After studying this book (for a long time) I was able to write a complete application and have total control over reading and writing JPG files.

5-0 out of 5 stars The number one JPEG compression book

Introduction to Data Compression, Second Edition (Morgan Kaufmann Series in Multimedia Information and Systems (Hardcover))

    Editorial Review

Khalid Sayood's textbook-style Introduction to Data Compression is the definitive guide to all kinds of compression schemes. Early chapters establish the mathematics involved in basic compression techniques, including lossless and lossy compression as well as the fundamentals of information theory that lay the groundwork for common forms of compression. (The book contains all the relevant formulas, although those who don't need such mathematical detail will still be able to understand the book.)

A good portion of the book examines various compression schemes, their strengths and weaknesses, and what content they work best for. Introduction to Data Compression begins with lossless compression schemes, which lose no information during the compression/decompression process. Huffman Coding, a well-established compression scheme, and arithmetic and dictionary coding also receive excellent treatment. In addition, the author takes on lossless compression for images.

For lossy compression, Sayood discusses schemes that use quantization, where a range of values is compressed in some way. He also describes scalar, vector, and differential encoding and fractal compression. A final chapter looks at video encryption (which often combines techniques from earlier chapters). Many of the compression schemes include examples from image and sound files, but the book considers a wide variety of video schemes too. This rich and confidently written text collates a lot of research and can serve as both textbook and source for designers who need a readable and mathematically solid introduction to data compression. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good coverage
The best thing about this book is the coverage and organization of the material. Sayood covers a wide variety of compression topics without getting into the nitty gritty details of them all. Thats why its an "Introductory" book. This book is a valuable resource for those who want to know the basics of various compression techniques and can be used as a starting point for further details. Some topics like arithmetic coding are covered in more detail than others. The book is also organized nicely with mathematical foundations provided as and when necessary.

4-0 out of 5 stars "The" Definitive Guide
Amazon claims that this is "the definitive guide". I have to agree with them because this book is the only broad grey pages introduction to data compression that I have been able to find, and it is very well written.

If you are only casually interested in data compression this book is not for you.

If you are interested in adding compression to your application and your data falls into a common category, sound, video, text ect this book is probably not for you. You should look to the open source community or buy an off the shelf product.

But if your data is odd or unique like say telemtry data (I'm sure there are other examples I just can't think of any) and you need to design a compression scheme for your data this book is "the only" book for you.

If you want to begin research into data compression and you are a newbie this book is a must have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very well-written book, software not so good
The book is one of the clearest I have read as a text book. Why cant everybody write like this?? There is very good flow throughout the text.

Only complaint is the software. It looks the software has not kept pace with the book itself. Some additional software has to be added (for Transform coding, for instance), and some references in the text book to the software are incorrect. If the accompanying software is upgraded, as it should be, I will rate this book a clear 5-star. ... Read more
