5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for NLP (for the mathematically inclined only!)
I am referring to the Bazaraa, Sherali and Shetty book "Nonlinear Programming, Theory and Applications", second edition (it seems that Amazon missed the third author).

This is a great book for anyone who isinterested in nonlinear optimization. The book presents the topic in aclear and concise manner, provides learning aides in form of examples andgenerally has a very well structured layout. I have other books on NLP, butI consider this the best one (Luenberger is great, too - but verycondensed). The book consists of three parts: the first part presentsconvex analysis, the second part looks at optimality conditions and thethird part presents algorithms. If you went through some OR textbooks andfelt that they didn't give you enough on NLP, this is the place to get yourfix!

This book for NLPs together with Dantzig's work on LPs and you havethe basic toolset for static optimization. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, very insightful
I'm shocked at the number of negative reviews of this book. I think it's a great book. Linear algebra is an incredibly important subject, for example in my field of electrical engineering. Every time I need to refresh my understanding of a concept, I turn back to this book (I have the edition from 1976). I had Strang as a lecturer at MIT in the late 1990s, and he is a great teacher, which I think is reflected in his book. I truly enjoy reading this book -- practical, conversational and enjoyable to read, helpful insights, as well as Strang's opinions on the usefulness and practicality of various results. I would describe the book as an advanced introductory linear algebra book, if that makes sense. It's definitely not graduate level, but unless you're pretty sharp, it might be a tough first book from which to learn linear algebra. Maybe that's why there are some negative reviews of this book here. I recommend it very highly, especially for those who already have some knowledge of linear algebra. In fact, the reason I came to this page in the first place is to buy a second copy of the book, so I can have one in my office and one at home... there aren't very many books I would say that about...

5-0 out of 5 stars First "...and its Applications" Book I Met True to the Title
Firstly, this book is true to its title...

It motivates the subject matter clearly and presents instances of why a certain type of problem is important (Why do we care about Ax=b, Ax=[lambda]x, ...)
It motivates the use of certain algorithms (Why do we use Gaussian Elimination, why pivot, why do the SVD, ...)

Also, as a basic text in Linear Algebra, which is THE introductory subject to applied mathematics, it serves a a primer for various areas in applied math: optimization, numerical solution of PDEs, "curve fitting" =), etc.....

4-0 out of 5 stars a good impression
I wondered how this book could elicit such mixed opinions, so I took a quick look by reading the first few pages, and scanning the first couple chapters. One can already see the writing style resonsible for this.

Strang is trying to clearly explain the ideas behind the various mechanical constructions, such as Gaussian elmination, in terms of their interpretation via matrices, and also explain practical aspects of the constructions such as cost of implementation, efficiency, and tendency to go "wrong" under roundoff.

This is a lot of ideas to put in a few pages, and students used to books which merely display a mechanical operation, then drill it over and over, are likely stunned by the compactness of the presentation. They are not used to mulling a few succint phrases for meaning, and taking their time. One student reviewer even complained that he had to reread after a few paragraphs, as if that were a bad thing.

He does give very clear and simple examples, he just doesn't give a lot of them. When he has made his point, he does not dwell on it, he moves on to enhance and deepen it. Probably you should work every single exercise in this book.

This is obviously an excellent book from which to learn a lot of deep useful insights into linear algebra and its uses. For those who want more drill on the arithmetic involved, any other book will have a lot of that. But those books will not have the clarity and focus of this book, in most cases.I recommend it highly. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Might be good for a reference...
Probably the most bloated book I've ever encountered. It seems like this isn't targeted for computer science students. It was completely impossible to read it without falling asleep, because the book could go on and on for pages without presenting anything new except that 1+1=2.

The best source for learning about tabu search would be to read a basic book about (combinatorial) optimization just to teach the vocabulary (like an exact neighborhood etc.). After that, just head to springerlink and download a few articles from the Lectures in Computer Science-series or use some other source for papers relating to applications of tabu search to various optimization problems.

This book is quite good for a reference though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book but too expensive
It's good to read the book that the writer and inventor of theory are the same person.Glover and Laguna conduct this book in a self-comprehensive book.I've never found any good resource of Tabu Search as great as thisbook.Only drawback is the price... too expensive for student.I onlyread it in the library though. I'm glad to know they have the paperbackedition but I'm not sure about the quality of printing. Lastly, get itwhenver you can afford it!.It's worth your money every characters. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An average book
I used this book in a graduate course on Stochastic processes. The book would rate as average or just above that as I found it to be insufficient for a start in the subject unless you were in a classroom course. It does assume some background in probabilty. Also, the explanations, while complete, are not as easy to understand as the Roos book. I also found that the examples were extremely easy as compared to the excersice problems. THis makes it tougher to 'extrapolate' and understand. It has one nice feature though- solutions to half the problems are there at the end of the book making it better for students while giving faculty leeway too. The excercises are quite comprehensive too. I'd say this is an excellent book for someone with some prior knowlede of Stochastic Processes. For a beginner, this may not be the best start.

5-0 out of 5 stars precise, modern treatment of stochastic analysis
The book arises from lectures at UNC-CH in a two-semester course on stochastic models. The author has exceptional precision and organization in the classroom, and this comes through in the book.Great book for teaching from, as well as learning from. This book also takes a step which more venerable texts, such as the Trivedi book or the Ross series could not -- it has computational excercises suitable for math packages like Mathematica. Thus, the student can be introduced to scientific computer literacy as well as stochastic processes. I recommend this book to anyone interested in teaching today's student, or for preparing themselves for challenges in Operations Research. The book would make an above-average reference as well. 5-0 out of 5 stars Read it if you need to write your first simulation program
Before reading this book I didn't have a clue about simulation modeling, but after reading the first few chapters I was able to write my first simulation program in C++. Although authors use C language and global data for simulation state, you can easily apply the concept of simulation state to any object-oriented language and replace global simulation state with object state.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible for Simulation
There are other books for giving you the simulation techniques and languages but to know the theory and statistics of simulation this is THE book.It startes with basics of statisstics and deals everthing you need to know about simulation. At some point you will start wondering how the authors could give so much information in just one book and lose lots of royalty money on the succeeding books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better understanding, rather than point and click
This book is the ground foundation of simulation modeling. Currently, only few books in simulation will spend pages and time, dedicated to the theoretical issues as good as this book.If you're tired of point-and-click or "how-to making one server queueing system" and you want to know the fundamental of simulation, you can't overlook this piece of jewel. I don't agree with one review that you have to understand statistics in order to get this book.Simulation is a probabilistic model. Using simulation without understanding statistics results in serious trouble since it will be only a toy (data), not a tool (information. ... Read more

    Simulation with Arena with CD-ROM

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This book doesn't provide any good examples.
The description of those models are BAD.
Author suppose that every readers are already familiar with
    all the functions of arena?

Author doesn't explain many modeling trickys clearly.

To be frankly, I am disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Arena requiring supplement
I used this book in 2 grad courses on simulation (one with Dr. Kelton himself!).

This is an outstanding book on the basics of the Arena simulation s/w. The explanations are detailed with screen-shots, etc. to clarify topics. The examples, specially the introductory ones, are excellent illustrations of simulation concepts in the Arena envioronment. The student version of the Arena s/w {version 5} is provided and more than sufficient for learning purposes. Also, the CD includes most of the example problems from the text & can be refered to when in trouble. Arena also has SMART files that are more complex examples illustrating various capabilities and these are very good for reference. The Arena online help is also quite comprehensive too. A big advantage of this book is explanations on building animations of the simulation model. Other books don't offer as good and simple coverage as this one does.

Some of the advanced material and concepts, however, are not explained in as much detail as the earlier chapters. The authors are not to be blamed entirely though; many of these models/examples are fairly elaborate and complete enumeration of details is difficult. However, I would have liked more comprehensive explanations on some features of Arena like: Transporters (this book covers only one type of transporter available in Arena; transporters are accurately explained in an older and out of print book); using VBA for automation of some features {this is very useful to make the simulation read i/p from a spreadsheet or text file}- the authors assume this will be picked up by users themselves, etc. Arena uses the SIMAN language as its engine for simulation. Siman has many, many blocks with more advanced options and features that are not explained here & this is the biggest drawback of the book. For modeling complex systems, I often use these lower level blocks and explanations of these blocks and features are comprehensive in "Introduction to Simulation Using SIMAN" by Pegden et al. In fact, with pretty good familiarity of the Arena envioronment, I use this Siman book a lot more nowdays. Only in animation building is the Siman book insufficient.

It is very important to note that this book is a refernce on simulation using Arena, NOT simulation concepts as a whole (these are covered briefly too); for simulation concepts and overviews, I recommend "Simulation Modeling and Analysis" by Law & Kelton as well as "Discrete Event System Simulation" by Banks, et al.

Let me end with this note: Dr. Kelton used material from this book in his introduction to Arena, so it'll be like learing in class itself. I would consider the Pegden book as a replacement or supplement to this one though.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but VERY LIMITED software.
What you get for your money: a book on version 5 of Arena and a CD with the student version of the software.
The book is a good introduction to the topic of discrete event system simulation, although if this is your only interest you'll get better value buying A. Law's book or Jerry Banks's book (also available at Amazon).
After introducing the basic concepts in simulation, the book turns into a tutorial in the use of Arena. This is basically a good thing, but you'll find that there are so stringent limitations in the softwareprovided, that some of the examples cannot be completed. This did not happen wiht version 3 (1998 edition). So what is the purpose?
Selling THIS book is a way of whetting your appetite for buying the software. If you are looking for information on simulation you can buy Law's book or Jerry Banks's book, if you are looking for software go directly to the manufacturer of Arena (Rockwell software) or other software manufacturers and find out in their web site. Version 3 was also limited but you could follow the examples with the software provided. Save your money on this book -- don't buy it. ... Read more
