CRC Standard Probability and Statistics Tables and Formulae by Daniel Zwillinger, Stephen Kokoska Average Customer Review: Hardcover (27 December, 1999) list price: $54.95 -- our price: $43.94 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (1)
Thus, there is a natural inclination of statistics authors to only provide a modicum of tables. The barest minimum! Well, your answer to this might be to amass several texts, so that hopefully, the tables you need can be found in one of these. An alternative is to get this book. Not a text, but a reference manual. Though the editors thoughtfully precede the tables with brief explanations of their usage and some cogent examples. You will find here the most commonly needed distributions in an easy to find and use format. ... Read more Isbn: 1584880597 |

CRC Standard Mathematical Tables and Formulae, 31st Edition by Daniel Zwillinger Average Customer Review: Hardcover (27 November, 2002) list price: $49.95 -- our price: $44.50 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (7)
This is a solid improvement over previous versions, but I found the typesetting sometimes produced a slightly scattered feel. The reorganisation of topics can be a little hard to navigate, e.g. I found the topics on probability and statistics a little inconveniently laid out, and things like single vs multiple dimension versions of the Newton method not being in the same place or referring to each other. If you read German or Russian I would recommend Bronstein and Semendjajew"Taschenbuch der Mathematik" over the CRC Handbook. It combines the Russian obsession with depth and thoroughnesswith a German sense of order and structure.

Mathematical Handbook for Scientists and Engineers: Definitions, Theorems, and Formulas for Reference and Review by Granino A. Korn, Theresa M. Korn Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 July, 2000) list price: $34.95 -- our price: $23.07 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (8)
Pros: Have been able to find everything I've needed quickly. (Chain rule, logarithms, conditional probability, general solution to quadratic equations.) The explanations are terse but clear. Cons: Crowed typography, could have used more margins, maybe a choice that was made for this reprint. Sections are number x.y-z, makes it hard to notice when the index refers to a range: x.y-za-zb. The index doesn't always lead directly to the desired section, for instance there is no entry for chain rule, but differentiation takes you right there. Unfortunately, I'm already through most of the classes where I could have made good use of this book, but for those starting out, this might be a handy reference.

Handbook of Mathematical, Scientific, and Engineering Formulas, Tables, Functions, Graphs, Transforms by James Ogden, Max Fogiel Average Customer Review: Hardcover (01 November, 1984) list price: $34.95 -- our price: $23.07 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (5)
Hey, the price is right. It's nothing special, but not all of my needs are special. For basic math stuff, this may be the book to get if you can't afford the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics.
I own CRC and Jeffrey's reference books and have used them so much the binding is disintergrating. In the meantime Ogden and Fogiel's book hasn'tmoved from my shelf. It's poorly indexed, and the formulas are oftenill-phrased. Please, if you are a scientist or an engineer, don't buythis book. For the future, for the children, get a better reference book ... I took it home and dutifully plagiarized some of its lines to satisfy my physics professor. For the next few months, that was the mode in which I used this book: read physics problem, translate into elliptic or hypergeometric beast, look up answer in G&R, cover up my tracks, get 9 or 10 points on the problem. Occasionally, I would own up to having looked something up. The book served its purpose well. Subsequently, I studied some integrals of the spinning top that were more or less right out of Nikiforov's book on special functions (another excellent source for those of you that would like to "earn" a PhD), and G&R stood well by its side. Indeed, I discovered how much fun it was to look up an integral whose complicated solution had been derived elsewhere, and then to look for patterns by analyzing the immediate neighbors of the given integral on the preceding and subsequent lines in G&R. After I was done with answering questions from physics professors, the book sat on the shelf taking up more room than several of its neighbors put together. Nonetheless, its binding was good, its typesetting clear, and its terse and copious stream of forbidding integral forms was pleasing to the eye. Some time passed, and one day I asked myself just what would motivate anybody to write such a large collection, so I started rummaging through its pages looking for a pattern. I realized that its organization was excellent (which would explain why I was able to find the answers for my homework), and I also found some sections that were just plain fun. The very beginning lists some sums of infinite series that can be derived during lunch or while waiting for a friend at a cafe (e.g. sum of k^3 = [1/2(n)(n+1)]^2 ). Then one can read about numbers and functions named after Euler, Jacobi, Bernoulli, Catalan... each line, more or less, is cross-referenced, so after you have given up trying to derive that darned product representation of the gamma function, you can go to the book in the library and see how Whittaker did it. After about 15 years of owning this book, I am nowhere near done with it. If you like math, and you want insurance against being bored, this book just might do the trick. As a bonus, it puts cute matrix stuff in the back (e.g. the "circulant") which one can read when desiring a break from the integrals. I know the book seems expensive, but think of if as spending about two bucks a year on it. I see that one can now obtain a CDRom version of G&R. An intriguing option, specially because it outputs in TeX; but really, how can anyone resist the large, stubby charm of its paper version? G&R can help you to deal with members of the opposite sex. I once used it to scare away a girlfriend that was becoming much too annoying, by pretending to be thickly engrossed in the process of memorizing every single integral in the "special functions" chapters. As for my mother, she was particularly proud of me when I showed her that I could actually understand "randomly selected" pages from this book (I don't suppose that I am giving anything away by remarking that books open naturally on sections that have been previously examined). For those of you that are concerned about home security, G&R is also a weapon. Some people surround themselves with baseball bats or, if they are particularly reckless, a handgun or two... I prefer to keep a fully-loaded G&R by my pillow, which I can hurl at any prowler at a moment's notice. Its shape is surprisingly well adjusted to the hand for the purposes of hurling, and if the covers are bound by a rubber band, the book maintains its shape quite stably as it sails across the room. Sell your Smith & Wesson and buy yourself a Gradshteyn & Ryzhik. You won't regret it. ... Read more Isbn: 0122947576 |

Before I would have to look through ten different books to find what I was looking for, but not anymore.I keep this book with me at all times and am never at a loss. Each chapter is very specific, with a little theory in the beginning, and then the rest is just easy to use formulas.A real life saver when you just want to find something without having to wade through some lengthy derivations.

Encyclopedic Dictionary of Mathematics: Second Edition by Mathematical SocietyofJapan, Kiyosi Ito Average Customer Review: Hardcover (08 June, 1987) list price: $500.00 -- our price: $500.00 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Mathematics, as put out by the Mathematical Society of Japan, is as complete and comprehensive an opus as one could wish for, concisely comprising in its two volumes all significant mathematical results, both pure and applied, elementary to advanced. This second edition is, basically, an English version of the acclaimed Japanese third edition. The EDM2, as it is known, succinctly but thoroughly covers math from A to Z, from Niels Henrik Abel and Abelian groups to Witt vectors and Zeta functions. Within its 2,000-plus pages are elegant explanations of diffusion processes, Fourier series, linear operators, and meromorphic functions. There are pages dedicated to quadratic fields and robust and nonparametric methods, and following each section, all the relevant references are listed. In addition, there are appendices with tables of formulas, numerical tables, and statistical tables, journals, publishers, and special notations, articles listed both systematically and alphabetically, plus a name index and an exhaustive subject index that's 231 pages long. It is a quality product--easily accessible, adhering to rigorous standards, and worth the investment for any school or personal math library. --Stephanie Gold ... Read more Reviews (8)
If you are a mathematician, or if mathematics is central to what you do, you will likely appreciate this collection as it contains wonderfully concise yet informative and authoritative entries on nearly every branch of modern mathematics.Need to refresh your memory on Radon-Nikodym derivatives and their properties? No problem. Are you up on Grassman algebras? If not, you can look it up in EDM2.Interested in game theory? It's in there. What about semi groups, elliptic integrals, perturbation theory, lattice theory, Hilbert spaces, projective geometry, integral geometry, measure theory, geometrical optics, and non-standard analysis? All there! But simply listing the topics covered in EDM2 will not give you an adequate picture of its utility. What is amazing about the book is how much information it can pack into very few pages, yet manage to keep the discussion quite readable.Don't get me wrong; it doesn't read like a Stephen King novel (nor would you want it to).But the entries are self-contained and cogent enough that you can actually learn a good bit about topics that are totally new to you.Of course, you will want to avail yourself of the many cited references to gain a more complete understanding of any given topic, but you will be well on your way to getting acquainted with fundamental definitions and techniques of a hitherto unfamiliar branch of mathematics. Here are several examples: If you look up "polynomial approximation" you will find a succinct discussion that rigorously defines such terms Bernstein polynomials, Chebyshev system, Haar's condition, degree of approximation, moduli of continuity, approximation by Fourier expansions, trigonometric interpolation, Lagrange interpolation, and orthogonal polynomials, and all in FOUR terse but readable pages, with plenty of references at the end.The entry on "geometric optics" covers Fermat's principle, Gauss mappings, Malus's theorem, and aberration, all in TWO pages. The succinct one-page biography of David Hilbert is followed by a one-page synopsis of Hilbert spaces. In a mere eight pages on function spaces it provides what amounts to a condensed survey of functional analysis, covering norms, dual spaces, Besov spaces, the Sobolev-Besov embedding theorem, Kothe spaces, etc. Of course, what you will not find in this book is a single proof.Nor will you find up-to-the-minute esoteric theorems. But then I cannot imagine how such a reference could encompass such things; mathematics is far too vast.Nonetheless, EDM2 has amazing breadth and depth for a meager four-volume collection. And it is written with mathematicians in mind, so the discussions are crisp and rigorous. It's exceedingly well done.
