5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book for a speech/motor delayed 4 year old
My son loves this story...and reading it together gives us wonderful opportunities to talk about fun new concepts and phrases like "wierd" "spiky" "why - why would a boy wear a bag on his head?" "why would a boy cut holes in the bag first" "what do you think happened to his hair?" etc...It strikes a perfect balance of telling a fun story, while keeping a little bit of mystery for the parents and kids to discuss. Cool ilustrations too.

4-0 out of 5 stars A "Bag" Idea.....

"You can't eat breakfast with a paper bag on your head!""You crazy kid!You can't go to school like that!""How do you plan to play like that?"But to their surprise, he has quite a successful day, even scoring three goals during his game. Finally at dinner, his little sister asks the big question we've all been waiting for... 5-0 out of 5 stars My kids and I loved Clara Caterpillar!
This is story about hidden talents, not judging someone by their appearance etc. and it is very clever.I especially liked the fact that the hero in this story is female.I bought this story for my son's 5th birthday, but my 8 year old daughter simply adored this book. After I read it aloud to him a couple of times I saw her pick it up and read it to herself again and then to him when he asked her to.(She is not normally gung-ho for reading)Great story.Fantastic pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
Absolutely delightful!Beautiful illustrations accompany the alliterative text that tells the tale of a cream colored butterfly who pales in comparison to her spectacular butterfly friends. But when Clara's relatively plain appearance helps her to save another butterfly, the other butterflies recognize her true value. An outstanding read aloud.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clara Caterpillar
Clara Caterpillar is a fabulous book for many reasons!!My kids enjoyed hearing the tongue tripping tale and love reading it aloud themselves. The alliterative style is quite ear catching. The illustrations are vibrant and colorful. The pictures draw you into the garden until you feel like another bug.

This book is perfect to use with students.I used this to teach caterpillar metamorphosis. It will also be read frequently to illustrate accepting and admiring the unique qualities of individuals. No classroom library would be complete without this book! ... Read more

Editorial Review

"I stink!" How can you not love such swagger and candor? And Kate andJim McMullan's big-eyed, loudmouthed garbage truck really must stink--byits own admission, and given all those smelly bags it's been cramming into itshuge back hopper.

Most kids already love garbage trucks on general principle, and one assumes thatcan only go double for a sass-mouthed, animated dumper like this one, out on itsearly-morning rounds: "See those bags? I SMELL BREAKFAST! Crew? Get me to thecurb! Lights? Blink! Brakes? Squeal! Tail gate? SAY AH!" The many opportunitiesfor loud, large-type sound effects should make for spirited readings, and arecipe for "alphabet soup" lets young readers practice their letters, workingthrough the ABCs from apple cores to zipped-up ziti with zucchini.

The text to I Stink!, while fun, is nowhere near as clever as the art.But fortunately Jim McMullan's fun, fat drawings and type treatments more thanmake up the difference, loading Dumpsters full of personality into thisgrimacing, grinning, growling--even burping!--big rig. Kids will have a goodtime doing diesel-powered imitations, but even more importantly, they'll learnwhere they'd be without their neighborhood trash truck: on top of "MountTrash-o-rama, baby." 5-0 out of 5 stars A Definite Hit!
I am currently interning in a Prekindergarten classroom.I cannot say enough good things about this book! The kids in my class LOVED this book from first read and I had to read it almost every day during our "transportation" unit.If you have or work with children, I recommend this book.I am buying my own copy for my own future classroom. It's also a lot of fun to read aloud, with tons of sound effects (even burping!)

5-0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite book too!
I have a son w/special needs and he absolutely LOVES this book!!!In the past, I have had trouble w/getting him to take an interest in reading, but he will actually go get this book and sit down with it and "read" it himself or ask me to read "the stinky book" to him. This is absolutely a great book and the way it is written is very fun to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Son's Favorite Book
My 2-year old absolutely adores this book! We've borrowed it from the library so many times that I have bought our own copy.It provides a humorous look at garbage trucks and even touches on the alphabet utilizing an ABC list of gross items that the garbage truck eats. We've read the book so many times that my son "reads" it to me at his young age.I highly recommend it for any other garbage truck-loving kids. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A STELLAR review
We think this book is good for ages 2-10.We think kids would like this book because it is about funny pigs trying to get to the opera. They tried six different ways and succeeded once. Funny things happen at the end. We think your children will LOVE this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Sight
The illustrations alone are a joy, but the story is quite interesting about a family of hogs who want to get to the opera.A wonderful family oriented book with quirky means of travel.Great for pre-schoolers.

4-0 out of 5 stars this was a great book
I just finished reading Six Hogs on a Scooter. It is aboutsix pigs in a family that are trying to get to the Opera House. They had trouble with about six different ways of transportation to get there. Almost all of them failed. The main characters are Penelope,Horace, GrandpaHog, Mother Hog, Grandma Hog, and Father Hog.

The pictures describe a lot of how all the ways of transportation failed. This book is funny in some parts seeing how six hogs doing weird things to get to the Opera House. I think 2nd or 3rd graders would like this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Dad and Daughter Book
My daughter and I have enjoyed reading Green Bear for over 9 years. When she was just a little child we had so much fun diving into the pictures, now even when she's 10 years old we go back and visit the book and rememberthe quality time. If you don't have the book you need to get it. The word"Snip" will bring smiles and laughs for years to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully simplistic - get all 4 books
Green Bear is a cute, simple book that teaches color and seasons in a way that very young toddlers or older babies will find entertaining. There are4 in the series, Yellow Hippo, Red Rhino and Blue Tortoise. Each bookteaches colors while focusing on a secondary theme.Red Rhino challengesthe child to find hidden pictures.Blue Tortoise teaches about the rewardsof patience.Yellow Hippo illustrates creative play with every dayobjects.

The simplistic style also makes it easy to use the book to teachsight words to older children.

We first bought the books 3 years ago formy 3 year old son, but now we share them with our 21 month old daughter. She loves them.Tonight I am buying the series to send to a friend who hasa new baby.

4-0 out of 5 stars Green Bear is a fun Bear
My daughter loved this book when she was 3-4. There are lots of colors and lots of animals hiding in special places.Watch for the kitty! And a surprise at the end! If you like this one, try the others in the series, Red Rhino, Yellow Hippo, and Blue Tortoise. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple and charming full-color picturebook
Flora's Surprise! is a simple and charming full-color picturebook written and illustrated by Debi Gliori. Flora the rabbit and her family are all busy planting different things - but while the other rabbits plant seeds, Flora plants a brick and waits and waits for it to grow into a house. A twist ending complements this upbeat and confidently recommended picturebook story.

5-0 out of 5 stars To thine own self be true
This engaging picture book for preschool-grade K is one of Gliori's best. Flora rabbit and her older siblings go to work in the garden. While the siblings plant seeds for flowers and vegetables, Flora plants a brick in a flowerpot which she claims will blossom into a house, despite warnings to the contrary. When spring comes, the garden is all in bloom, and it turns out that Flora was right too - her flowerpot has a bird in a nest living on it! Kids will enjoy the gentle humor of this tale, and will identify with Flora having to stick up for herself when her elders dismiss her ideas. The garden pictures are warm and colorful too. ... Editorial Review

We would follow Stephen Huneck's black Labrador, Sally, anywhere--to thebeach, to the mountains, and certainly to thefarm. The Sally books are wonderfully witty glimpses into the simple psyche of adog, where exciting new smells and tastes reign supreme. Sally first meets thegolden Lab Molly, and after a comical round of introductory sniffing, her newfriend proceeds to introduce her to Bessie the cow, who squirts them with milk. The doggy duo then eats like pigs, horses around, plows a field, and narrowlyescapes a goosing. Each oversized illustration explodes with generous, boldlycolored woodcut prints, as Huneck artfully captures the gorgeous stripedgeometry of farmland and fences--along with amusing canine antics. Simplesentences in a large clear font (designed by the artist himself) ensure smoothsailing and happy endings for early readers, but adults will enjoy the dry humorof these books just as much as kids will. Very Kind Rich Lady and Her One Hundred Dogs, The
by CHINLUN LEE
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Hardcover (01 June, 2001)

Editorial Review

"Once there was a very kind rich lady who adopted one hundred stray dogs. They all lived together in a tallhouse on a hill." So begins Chinlun Lee's first ever picture book--a thoroughly charming story based on a woman inTaipei who actually did take in an impossible number of stray dogs. This very kind rich lady loves her charges verymuch, and we are introduced to them one by one in delightful spreads of delicate colored pencil and watercolor. Firstwe meet Papa, then Mr. Samuel, then Mary, then Fifi and her four pups Eeny, Meeny, Miney, and Mo. ("That's eight.")The hundredth one--Bingo--is always late. Children will adore poring over the pages and closely examining eachlovingly illustrated pooch--each aptly named, each with his or her own distinct personality. Sooty looks fresh out of thechimney, Lola is a poodle, Yogurt is creamy and smooth looking, Pirate has a natural eye patch, Silk has an ephemeralquality, etc. Every day, the very kind rich lady feeds them, brushes them, plays on the hill, and puts them all to bed.The final spread, "Goodnight, one hundred dogs," shows the woman sleeping contentedly on a bed on the floor, surrounded by her beloved animals from Sheepdog to Sharpei, also serenely snoozing. Sweet simplicity and purepersonality combine to make this one of the tail-waggingly best bedtime books we've ever seen. (Ages 2 to 6)--Karin Snelson ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars dissappointed
My daughter loves dogs. She described the book as boring and demanded a second bedtime story. The entire book is in the title and reading the one hundred names twice did not seem to capture my child's interest.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing book
If the story would have been about The Very Kind Lady and Her One Hundred Dogs it would have been better. The focus on the fact that she was a rich lady didn't add any meaning to the story (except, perhaps, that she is able to have 100 dogs and take care of them.)As a picture book, the illustrations are interesting and the dogs have funny and silly names (all 100 are listed twice.)

As a story, however, it lacks substance. The fact that the lady is described as a very kind rich lady throughout the book and not just as a very kind lady never sounds right to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is One of the Best Picture Books of the Year
The title sets up the tension right away: how will Chinlun Lee ever be able to capture the personalities of 100 dogs, clearly and thoroughly enough to satisfy the perceptive picture book audience? This book brilliantly rises to the challenge. The caricatures are hilarious, especially the body language, but also the incredibly witty, charming, very real names of each dog. The parentheses (which keep count) establish the voice of the book which is intimate and endearing, as if the narrator is sharing a secret.Chinlun plays with contrast and numbers -sometimes showing a certain group of dogs, sometimes showing the whole bunch as a single, exuberant force, sometimes highlighting just one dog (as in the case of Bingo who is usually last, and Papa who is named first). This is the stuff of which classic picture books are made. Best of all, Chinlun doesn't just TELL us it's possible to love 100 dogs with care and understanding, she SHOWS us in one of the happiest books I've read in a long time. This book perfectly demonstrates boundless quality of love. All one has to do is give name to those animals (people, things) that are loved and suddenly there is room in the heart for every last one. Thank you, Chinlun!! ... Read more

I love this book, and I always have!My mother subscribed me to the Parent's Book club and this is the book that stands out the most!

When my goddaughter was old enough, I gave her my old copy. She loved for me to read it to her! When I had a son, I realized how badly I wanted that book for him.I found a perfect condition book and it is now one of his favorite books for me to read to him.I could recite this book from memory. It is a classic and should be on every bookshelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pickle Things - Pre-Arthur Genius
I am so upset that this book is now out of print; next to "The Five Chinese Brothers" this was my favorite book as a child. I'm almost 20 now and I can't believe that kids these days will never get to experience the wonder that is "Pickle Things." My mom is a school teacher and both of these great books were stolen out of her classroom, both being originals. If anyone has a good copy of "Pickle Things" lying around let me know. I think that both of these books are must reads for everyone, kids and adults.

A few weeks ago, I came across a worn copy of Pickle Things that was left at my house by one of my granddaughters who is now seventeen years old. After that, it spent many years in my second grade classroom. I remembered how much children love it, so I took it to my little two-year-old granddaughter and it has quickly become her favorite book! Now, when I walk in the door of her house, she runs to get Pickle Things for us to read.In fact, she "reads" it to me!!! I wanted to get a new copy for her and I'm sorry to see that it is now out of print. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Elmo Book
This is my Baby Daughter's absolute favorite book.I bought it when she was five months old, because she had the Chicken Elmo toy that she really liked. She just loves this book. She's eight months old and it's really the only book that captures her full attention.(The Hungry Caterpillar comes in second.)We've tried buying other Elmo books, but she's just not as interested in them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Funny
My daughter (22 months old) loves this book. The main characteris Elmo, and features a couple of the other sesame Street characters. The book has a great rhyming pattern and my daughter loves when Elmo sneezes and as a consequence knocks thimgs down. My daughter loves all the Early Step into Reading books I've purchased. They offer alot of Sesame Street titles which are great. These books are wonderful for the next step in reading (going from picture books to longer stories with a plot).

Editorial Review

Some things in life are too big. Some are too small. And the best thingsare just right. In this appealing picture book by the author of Cinder-Elly and Sleepless Beauty, opposites areexplored in the context of friendship. Two bunny buddies shop for bikes (one'sway too big, another is too small, and the last one, a tandem, is just right),go dancing (with partners too short and too tall until they find each otheragain--just right!), and experience nightlife in a tent (too dark, too bright, just right). Seems they never get it right until they team up--just like thebest friendships.

Young readers will be tickled by the humorous details in each vignette, especially the faithful little mouse that accompanies the pink and yellowrabbits on all their excursions. Frances Minters's simple, repetitive text, illustrated with Janie Bynum's smiley watercolor rabbits and elephants and pigsand bears, is just right. (Ages 2 to 5) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dress up!
I LOVE getting dressed up for a party! The little girl in this book does too! Except she uses her moms clothes! Her mom makes her change into her own. I wish I could wear my mom's clothes!

5-0 out of 5 stars a book for children of all ages
This story is about a young girl who is getting dressed in her moms cloths and how she has to change out of them to wear hers. Its a great book for young children who are learning to read and want a fun story that they can read over and over agian with there family. When i was helping my little cousin justice learn to read she would love to take this book and read it to everyone and show them that she could read. A very fun book that my daughter and I have enjoyed for more than a year. The book is a cumulative story about a girl dressing up in her mother's clothing for a party.Told in fun rhyme with great rhythm, my daughter and I try to read each page as quickly as we can without taking a breath until the last line on each page which reads "...I'll wear to the party."A thoroughly enjoyable little book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful work
This book is perfect for adults to read and show to young children.Good idea to put the recipe in the back -- we learn by experiencing; and, the assistance of an adult in the learning process of a child for this age group is all the more worthwhile. The watercolor illustrations are beautiful and colorful too.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a refreshing book!
I really enjoyed this story and the beautiful illustrations that accompany it. What a great way to teach children about a plant that is so often discarded by society. I especially like how it teaches us to see beauty inall the little things on this planet.

The additional facts and recipe ondandelions were an added bonus. This is a great book for all ages! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Wait to Read.....
"A new book for me-/I can't wait to read!/I run to my own little chair./I'm growing too tall and the seat is too small,/So I am not comfortable there."Now where is the perfect place for our young narrator to read his new book?He looks all over the house and even outside, but can't quite find just the right spot.Grammy's soft, cozy chair is being used by Rover, and he's not sharing.Daddy's chair is under the cold, blowingceiling fan, and his brother's beanbag chair has sprung a leak. The kitchen's too sticky and messy, Grandpa's chair has sprung a spring, and though the backyard is warm and sunny, the sprinklers come on as soon as he settles in and now it's too wet out there."I dry myself off./I give up, I can't read./I've tried to sit down everywhere./With no reading done, I'm still on page one-/I can't find a comfortable chair!"Debbie Bertram and Susan Bloom's clever, rhyming text is engaging and full of bouncy energy, and complemented by Michael Garland's bold, bright, and playful illustrations. Each page dazzles with vibrant color, marvelous facial expressions, and humor as our frustrated hero is thwarted again and again as he runs from room to room looking for just the right place to read. With a sweet ending to set everything right, The Best Place To Read is a heartwarming, joyous romp preschoolers will beg to read again and again."Mommy, oh, Mom!/May I sit on your lap?/I love it so much when we share."The best place to be, just my book, Mom, and me-/At last.../In a comfortable chair."
