Environmental Peacemaking by Ken Conca, Geoffrey D. Dabelko Average Customer Review: Paperback (13 November, 2002) list price: $17.50 -- our price: $17.50 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (1)
However, the title is a bit deceptive since much of the discourse in the book is a reflexive continuation of the environmental security literature, rather than offering a fresh theoretical path towards an instrumental vision of environmental issues in conflict resolution. A major cause of this lapse is the choice of case studies that are presented. All except one (India and Pakistan) are low level conflict situations where cooperation is far easier to engage. Even in the chapter on South Asia, the authors do not address the question of why cooperation over the Indus has NOT led to a larger cooperative mood between India and Pakistan? Much of the text presents historical material and some "thick description" of cases and a literature review rather than involved analysis or recommendations. To be fair to the authors, they admit that this is an embryonic work -- but perhaps they should have waited a couple of years and chosen better case studies before producing the volume. Some suggestions for closer analysis would be "peace parks" between Ecuador and Peru or more localized cases such as the alliance between "red-neck" fishermen and Native Americans over preservation of the wild rice plantations in Northern Wisconsin (two sides which were previously inveterate adversaries). Nevertheless, the book offers a workable starting point for further research. ... Read more Isbn: 080187193X |

Ghost of Summer (Haunting Hearts Romance Series) by Sally Steward Average Customer Review: Mass Market Paperback (01 August, 1999) list price: $5.99 -- our price: $5.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (6)
The heroine's mother died when she was a childbut because she loved her husband so deeply her soul remained alive and shereturned to him in the form of a ghost. She will not find eternal restuntil Kate finds her true love.Kate's parents scheme to bring her backhome to the man they believe she is destined to love. After receiving avery strange phone call from her father, Kate returns to her hometown tomake sure that he's not losing him mind. The first person she encountersis Luke Rodgers, the man who broke her heart many years ago when he movedaway and ignored her letters. Kate is now engaged to a man she doesn'tlove because she can't bear facing that type of hurt again. When she seesLuke all the old feelings return. This is where the really weakconflict kicks in.Luke and Kate grew up together and were closer than twopeas in a pod. When they were twelve Luke moved away, never to be heardfrom again.Because of this devastating loss at the ripe old age oftwelve, neither has been able to trust themselves to love again and bothhave shut off their emotional wells.I really wasn't exaggerating aboutthe weak conflict bit, was I? Despite that plot quibble I did enjoythis love story very much. The book concentrates on the couple as theyrebuild their relationship and never gets off track or bogged down byextraneous subplots. This is one couple who plainly enjoy each other'scompany and it was refreshing to read. The love story between Kate'sparents was also well done and very touching. If you're looking for asweet, old-fashioned love story and are tired of villains who take up toomuch of the plot you'll want to give this book a try.
A fabulousread!Sally Carleen doesn't have it in her to write a bad novel! This onewill appeal to readers of both traditional and supernatural romances. ... Read more Isbn: 0515125547 |

Guns of the Palmetto Plains: A Cracker Western (Cracker Western) by Rick Tonyan Average Customer Review: Hardcover (01 August, 1994) list price: $16.95 -- our price: $16.95 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (3)
It is the end of the Civil War.The cattle needs to be moved to help feed the Confederacy. The challenges of doing so makes for interesting reading. Some of the area described has changed very little.Granted, power poles and lines grow next to major paved highways. However, many roads are still sand. There are still swamps and forests. We who live in this area like to think of it as the "real" Florida. The union officers housed in Palatka and St. Augustine are met with a hostile hospitality. These events did happen and Mr. Tonyan has written them beautifully. As another reviewer has said - try to meet the author. He has more stories to tell.
This is one of the best books I have everread! And if you get a chance to meet the author, do so.I am pretty surehe really is Tree, the main character. ... Read more Isbn: 1561640611 |

Wicked Angel by Shirl Henke Average Customer Review: Mass Market Paperback (01 April, 2001) list price: $5.99 -- our price: $5.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (5)
During a brawl on the London docks, started by one of Rev. Woodbridge's sermons, Joss is saved from being trampled by Alexander Blackthorne, a newcomer to England. Alex, the American son of an English noblewoman and her Muskogee Indian husband, has been sent to live with his mother's people to reform his rowdy ways and become a gentleman. Alex is immediately drawn to Joss' intelligence, wit and unconventionality. She is smitten at first glance by his tall good looks and kindness. A fast friendship forms between the two. However, Joss accepts her plain, gawky appearance and understands that Alex can never love her as a woman - especially as he has most of London's females, society ladies and Cyprians, at his feet. The two seem to continuously get into humorous and dangerous scrapes from which they rescue each other, until Joss finds herself in a terrible predicament that may be impossible to escape. True to form, Alex comes to the rescue with a most unusual proposal. And the excitement, steamy and otherwise, really begins. Shirl Henke has written a delightful romance, one of her best. The novel clips along at a nice pace. Her characters, from the hero and heroine to their friends, family and enemies, are wonderful and very original. The subplot, the War of 1812 and the British plans to woo the American Creek and Seminole Indians to their side is fascinating. Ms. Henke's research is impeccable. "Wicked Angel" is light entertainment at its best.
The son of an American Indian and an English aristocrat, Alexander Blackthorne had been sent to England for some "civilizing." But the only lesson he cared to learn were those offered by taverns and trollops. When a marriage of convenience forced Jocelyn and Alex together, Joss knew she would need more than prayer to make a loving husband of her WICKED ANGEL. The story moves along at a fast pace and is very easy to read.It captures your attention from the first page and doesn't let go until the last. The characters are strong and likeable. It is definitely worth every penny and you won't regret reading it.
Circumstances lead Alex to marry Joss to form a union in name only. Alex finds difficulty in keeping to the original terms of the bargain when he uncovers the beautiful woman that he has married. Their marriage must endure further tests as they return to America, and Joss meets some of Alex's Indian relatives. The depth of these two main characters makes this a very enjoyable read. Neither hero or heroine are perfect-both are very likeable, human characters with believable flaws. Though Joss' initial appearance is rather dowdy, Alex finds that he is attracted to her anyway and later discovers that it wasn't her beauty initially that drew him to her, but her compassionte character, a rare find in a genre where beauty is almost everything. Readers will definitely want to explore LOVE A REBEL...LOVE A ROGUE, the story of Alex's parents. ... Read more Isbn: 084394854X |

Reap the Bitter Winds by June Lund Shiplett Average Customer Review: Mass Market Paperback (October, 1979) list price: $2.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (1)
This particular book is about Loedicia, her husband Quinn and the other man she loves, Roth.It also follows Lodeicia's daughter, Rebel, her love for Beau (a French-Indian) and her husband-to-be, Brandon (an English Duke). Shiplett makes these characters so real -- they have flaws, bad hair days, gain weight and make mistakes. Not your average blonde haired, blue eyed wimpy heroine who gets saves by the big handsome, over-bulked stupid guy. These women think for themselves and can take care of themselves, thank you very much. I'm really not a big reader of romances in general, but I love this series of books.I think I pull them out about once a year and reread them all the way through. It's truly amazing how Shiplett manages to weave history, family, action and romance thru this series. This is a can't miss series and you will only wish that Ms. Shiplett had written more. ... Read more Isbn: 0451116909 |

Love Once in Passing by Jo Ann Simon Average Customer Review: Paperback (28 April, 2002) list price: $14.50 -- our price: $14.50 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (7)
Organized religion asks you to do that on a regular basis by requesting you to believe in an unprovengod. I don't want to offend religious believers here, but I would ask that if you can believe in an unmet God, why can't you believe that other unidentified phenonoma can occur? Gods were created by humans because of the things they did not understand in ancient times--lightning, changes in climate, natural catastrophes like earthquakes and floods, droughts and famines. And for thousands of years they had no knowledge to explain these natural phenomena. This book is an attempt at saying that the conceived impossible MIGHT be possible.
Jessica Lund is shocked and very afraid when the handsome man in Regency clothes suddenly appears in her car.It takes her awhile to believe he is a Regency traveler who has journeyed through time.Once she comes to accept he's not crazy, she takes him into her house and eases him into the ways of the twentieth century. They fall in love and give into their passion but in the back of their minds they are always wondering if Christopher will be returned to his own time. This reviewer read LOVE ONCE IN PASSING when it first came out and thought it was a beautiful love story twenty-one years ago and after rereading Jo Ann Simon's time travel today the novel remains a fantastic reading experience. The characters are timeless and somehow believable and the reader hopes they get the happily ever after they so desperately want.To find out the answers to that question, the audience will want to read LOVE ONCE AGAIN coming next month.
