Apple iBook Notebook (500-MHz PowerPC G3, 64 MB RAM, 10 GB hard drive)

Editorial Review

The iBook is an elegant, highly portable notebook that offers a basic feature set at a reasonable price. With only 64 MB of RAM, a 10 GB hard disk drive, and a 12.1-inch screen, this isn't the notebook for power users, but it will serve well for standard applications, web access, and email. At only 4.9 pounds, this is one of the lightest notebooks around. It includes a 24x read-only CD-ROM drive, 56K modem, and 100 Mbps networking. Both the classic Mac OS 9 and the slick new Mac OS X are installed. If you are interested in Apple notebooks but are looking for more oomph, consider one of the DVD- or CD-RW-equipped iBooks, or one of Apple's superb Power Book notebooks. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too slow
If you want to buy an iBook, buy a faster one. This one just can't run any modern software.Heck, it isn't much good for old software.Go for the 700MHZ G3 or don't bother! If you need to run any graphics software then buy a G4.My G3 can't hack Adobe anything! If I could go back I would buy a G4 based Powerbook (I use one at work).

I am one of those switchers (apple.com/switch). I worked on mac 5 years ago, loved it but couldn't afford one. So I have spent the last 5 years in the PC family. Just bought the iBook. It's absolute perfection. No problem to switch files, so easy to use. I now have an ipod, a digital camera. I completely (re)adopted Mac's digital life.
Have no fear to get rid of your PC and ride a Mac. You will notice the difference. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the worlds best by far....
As a professional bartender I have to say this book does not deserve its title. It has some good anecdotes and stories along with the authors opinion of good bars in various cities. It has a smattering of drinks and some history. An okay book if you just want to set up a home bar but if you want to work as a bartender its just too lightweight. I would only recommend buying this if you were going to buy a book such as Seagrams Bartending Guide as well. In fact, buy the Seagrams book first and if you still want more maybe then you should try this book. I'll be sending my copy back for sure.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book!
This book is great. Very informative and entertaining as well. I love the stories that the different bartenders tell throughout the book. There is a lot of great trivia and little known facts. I would have given it 5 stars except I didn't completely agree with some of the choices for the top bars in various cities, but that it being really picky. If I could, I would have given it 4 and 3/4 stars. Otherwise, I thought it was perfect. Great for someone just setting up a bar at home or even if you already have one you will learn a lot either way. Buy it for yourself or give it as a gift. It will be very appreciated.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic history and mixing instructions for a few drinks
This guide takes the sensible approach of instructing aspiring house bartenders in a variety of ways of mixing the most common drinks in America. In addition to lengthy and entertaining histories of each drink, celebrity favorites, anecdotes from experienced bartenders, and, of course, multiple recipes for each drink, this guide imparts a sense of respect for liquor and for the art of making delicious beverages.

All the bartenders in this book, as well as the editors, forcefully condemn drinking to get drunk, instead treating alcohol as an incomparable treat to be used sparingly and only in the most delicious recipes possible. Thus, Long Island Iced Teas are denigrated for being immensely alcoholic with no particularly interesting flavor of their own.

My complaint regarding this work is personal:that the editors only treat snazzy, modern drinks is sensible from the perspective that such drinks are what the public is interested in learning about, but it leaves people with more exotic tastes or an interest in the popular drinks of bygone days left without much information.Still, I have found this guide otherwise brilliant. ... Editorial Review

With Grand Theft Auto III, Rockstar proves that not alldevelopers are concerned with toning down the violence in their games. Thissequel is even more bloody, violent, and sadistic than its popular predecessors, offering up an enormous 3-D city in which nearly any criminal act is possible.Players are free to steal cars, beat up the local population for their money (orweapons), make time with prostitutes, or simply roam to their heart's content. Those seeking more structure can embark on dozens of plot-driven missions orsteal cars that let them play minigames. Nab a cop car and you can go onvigilante missions. Grab a cab and you can play a deadly version of CrazyTaxi. Take a fire truck and you can earn money putting out fires. The gamejust never gets boring.

As in real life, there are consequences for your criminality. As your randomacts of mayhem mount up, the police start hounding you, eventually calling inSWAT trucks, the FBI, and even the army if you continue down the path ofdestruction. Shaking these pursuers is easily the most fun part of the game, especially when a bunch of friends are packed in the room to witness your narrowescapes.

Grand Theft Auto III is fine-tuned to near perfection in every category. All the vehicles, from slick sports cars to lumbering dump trucks, handleexactly as you'd expect and smash apart realistically when abused. The threeislands in the game are rendered in terrific detail considering their size, andare packed with traffic, pedestrians, and hidden jumps. The audio is equallyamazing. Pedestrians talk, cops scream at you, and you can tune in ninedifferent radio stations whenever you are in a car. It all adds up to amonumental achievement: the rare console game for adults that manages to geteverything right. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Offers an enormous world for players to exploit, rendered in staggeringdetail
  • Equally fun whether you go on plot-based missions or run around as afreelance crook
Cons:
  • Ultraviolence, foul language, and adult situations mean you'll want to keepthis far away from kids
  • It takes too long to get from one island to another, making some missionstedious

4-0 out of 5 stars What Makes This Addictive?
I got this game when I was six and I am still playing this very good game. For 2001 this is a really good game. People thought it was too violent. Well, you don't have to be violent in the game. Only in a couple of missions will you have to get mean. If you can't get Grand Theft Auto 3 buy Mafia. But this game gives 72 missions. I am still trying to get a 100 percent rating. By the end of the game you will only have 17 percent done. A lot of side things to do makes this the best game ever made. Just next time Rockstar makes A GTA game. Take out the Sexual Content and all the other things and make it like Grand Theft Auto 3

1-0 out of 5 stars Much better on the computer
get this game for your computer. ps2's rubbish controllers don't do this game any justice. much better pressing a key and stealing a car than lumping a button on a rubbish controller.

Editorial Review

A movie that only true horror buffs could love, Army of Darkness is officially part 3 in the wild and wacky Evil Dead trilogy masterminded by the perversely inventive director Sam Raimi, who would later serve as executive producer of the popular syndicated TV series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Raimi's favorite actor, Bruce Campbell, returns as Ash (hero of the first two Evil Dead flicks), a hardware-store clerk who is magically transported--along with his beat-up Oldsmobile and a chainsaw attachment for his severed left forearm--to the brutal battlefields of the 14th century. He quickly assumes power (who else in the Middle Ages packs a shotgun and a chainsaw?), and unites his band of medieval knights against the dreaded Army of the Dead. Raimi gleefully subverts almost every horror-movie cliché as he serves up a nonstop parade of blood, gore, and vicious sword-bearing skeletons--an affectionate homage to animator Ray Harryhausen's classic Jason and the Argonauts. The frantic action is fun while it lasts, but even at 80 minutes Army of Darkness nearly wears out its welcome. You know that Raimi can maintain the mayhem for only so long before it grows tiresome, and fortunately this madcap movie quits while it's ahead. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars 0 STARS:Talk about stupid, this thing is ridiculous.
When I watched "Army of Darkness", I tried really hard to keep an open mind, but much to my dismay, I had to admit that this movie is utter trash and completely boring.I actually liked "The Evil Dead"...a pretty good movie, so I thought I should check out this sequel...boy was I wrong!!I couldn't believe that I had heard so many good things about this movie and it was jst incredibly terrible.I guess this movie appeals to a very limited auction or as they say has a small "cult following".I must admit this whole Medieval theme is extremely lame...it definitely gets stupid and very boring, very fast."Army of Darkness" falls more into the category of a cheesey sci-fi comedy rather than a horror flick. As a horror movie, it fails miserably. Therefore, I cannot recommend this trash to anyone who is a true horror movie fan...avoid this garbage at all costs. Some people call "Army of Darkness" a horror movie...I just call it "rubbish".

5-0 out of 5 stars Genuine and Original!
This is one of my all time favorite zombie, horror movie and at the same time it's one of those movies that made me laugh also the most. No, this is not another zombie cheap flick (when I say cheap I mean horrible) it's one of those films that will give you the chills and will make you spill your drink, if you're having any, due to the laughter that will be inevitable.

If you have seen 'The Evil Dead' then you're on the right track to start this one since it is the sequal. Bruce Campell's character goes to the midieval age to try to find a way back to the present, modern time. But in order to do that he must go into a journey fighting the dead itself. You will see how the can guy can screw up and will make you laugh alot and also how he kicks zombie ass in this movie, which all scenes showing are truly original.

4-0 out of 5 stars Most entertaining undead movie ever
I don't know about the specific special release or bonus packages for this movie (so maybe I should be careful how I rate this), but the movie itself is top notch. Unless you're a hardcore afficonado, I'd recommend buying one copy of this movie and leaving it at that. ... Read more

Panasonic KXTC1503B 900 MHz Digital Cordless Phone with Answering Device (Black)
Average Customer Review: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $59.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

The Panasonic KXTC1503 combines digital technology with easily operable features, resulting in an excellent value. 900 MHz digital operation offers better clarity and longer range than traditional analog phones that operate in the 43-49 MHz band, while 22-channel autoscan selects the frequency with the least interference. Plus, a speakerphone permits hands-free conversations.

The all-digital answering machine stores up to 15 minutes of date/time-stamped messages and supports remote retrieval so that you can check your messages while you're away from home. The unit comes with a pre-recorded answering message, or you can record your own. The new message playback feature plays back only those messages you haven't already listened to, while a two-line LCD panel lets you know how many messages are in your in-box. Instant call interrupt allows you to verify the caller and then pick up the handset even after the machine has already answered. Other answering system features include a toll saver, slow-talk message playback, and voice prompts.

The extra-long-life battery can handle up to 6 hours of talk time and up to 14 days on standby without recharging. A 10-station speed dialer is provided for those numbers you call the most. Two-way paging/automatic intercom means you don't have to spend time looking for that pesky handset. Both ringer and handset volumes can be toggled between three volume levels and you can also select between tone and pulse dialing. Flash and redial buttons are included, and the positive charge self-cleaning battery contacts ensure efficient (and therefore shorter) recharging time. The phone is easily wall-mountable and comes backed with a one-year warranty that covers parts and service. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value
In the past 3 weeks, I have returned 4 phones (2 Uniden, GE, & Vtech). For this price range, I have found this phone to be superior to the other 4 that I had purchased. Uniden had the easist set-up and menu system by far, but everything else goes to the Panasonic (reception, clarity, digital recordings, range, etc.)This 900 mhz phone actually performs better than 2 of the other 2.4 ghz phones that I bought. The only thing that I which it had was a lighted message display like all the other phones on the market. It could also use a ringer on the base unit. I would certainly recommend this phone for the money. FYI, the Vtech 2468 was the worst of the bunch.

2-0 out of 5 stars below average
Although this phone has decent features for a low price, the sound quality is lacking.Ever since I received this phone as a gift over a year ago people talking to me wondered if I was speaking through a cell phone, or if I was receiving another incoming call.A lot of conversations sounded choppy or broken to either party, sometimes forcing an early end to long distance calls.Another reviewer mentioned that he was able to get range of up to 50 meters, mine got nowhere near that, and this model did not include backlit #'s either.I leave the handset on the charger a majority of the time, so battery life issues haven't surfaced.Otherwise, the answering machine and speakerphone work well and would have raised the overall rating to 4 stars if not for the inconsistant sound quality. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars TURNED "ROCKET SCIENCE" to Reading Ease
Homer's The Odyessey is a drudgery to read not to mention understand. This book took the pain and bordom of that and shortned it to a 1 hour (45 if your a fast reader) book that keeps all the details (for your reading pleasure) and explains the importance of each section in relations to High School which actually helps a ton. (pulled my grade on this from the usual B to A thanks to this book).

Editorial Review

The best extreme-sports game ever gets even better in Tony Hawk's ProSkater 3. The elements that made the last two games a success are back:tight controls, deep trick system, a wide selection of skaters (including TonyHawk, Bucky Lasek, Rodney Mullen, Chad Muska, Elissa Steamer, and others), and aslick soundtrack (featuring the Ramones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Motorhead,KRS-One, Redman, and more). Adding to the already brilliant formula is a new trick, updated graphics, and Internet play.

In Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, players were introduced to the manual--amove that greatly revolutionized the series' gameplay. This installmentintroduces the revert, and while it isn't as significant an addition as themanual, it does add another layer to the already deep trick system. The gamefeatures solid graphics, but a level of detail was sacrificed in order to makethe game's levels so large. There are a few frame skips and polygon clips, butthese occasions are rare and do not overshadow the stellar gameplay.

Career mode is as deep as ever, with eight objective-filled levels. In thissingle-player mode, players traverse their way through some brilliantly designedcourses to achieve high scores, find the letters to the word "skate," findhidden videotapes, and interact with level-specific objects. Two players canparticipate in the five multiplayer minigames, which include king of the hill, horse, and trick attack. Up to four players can join Internet or LAN gamesthrough the use of the PS2 Network Adapter or numerous USB devices. SupportedUSB Ethernet adapters include LinkSys EtherFast USB100TX, D-Link DSB-650TX, SMCEZNET-USB 2102, and SOHOware NUB100. Supported USB modems include Zoom FaxModem2985L, Pocket NetSurfer NMT00700, MultiTech MT5634ZBA, and ActiontecUSB56012-01CW. USB keyboards are also supported, enabling players to type trash online.

We tested Internet play using the LinkSys and a DSL modem; the action was verysmooth with no noticeable lag. On its own, this is a top-shelf title, butconsidering its Internet capabilities, there's no reason for fans of sports, action, and platform games not to own Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. This gamewill satisfy them all. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:

  • First Internet-capable PS2 game
  • Tight, addictive, outstanding gameplay
  • Gargantuan levels and plenty of objects to interact with

  • Some minor graphics glitches

5-0 out of 5 stars I absolutely love this game!
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 is my favorite PS2 game currently in my posession. The graphics are great!

I also have the cheat codes, if anyone wants to defy all moral reason and use them. To unlock all sorts of neat players(Like The Demoness, the Neversoft Eyeball, Kelly Slater, and many more) type in "yohomies".

For those of you who have played THPS3 already, and gotten as far as or farther than Los Angeles, if you use The Demoness, you can temporarily shrink people in the game. When they jump out of your way as you skate by them, turn around and stare at them. Poof!

Another cheat is for everything. Simply enter in "backdoor" and you will have access to Perfect Rail,(You can't fall off when you grind) First Person Mode, and tons of other amazing features that make the game a little more fun and easier, so you can concentrate on making the goals. (You pause while skating and select Cheats to toggle them on and off.)

This is a wonderful game that will provide hours upon hours of enjoyable entertainment. It is certainly worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellentness
Pros
<Can play over and over again until the skin peels off your little fingers
<Unlike THUG (Tony Hawks UnderGround), this game is about skating (Tony Hawks PRO SKATER! Not Tony Hawks get off your skateboard and throw fireballs at each other)
Cons
<Some tricks take a flick of the hand to do and others you probably need an extra hand to do
<GLITCHES!!!!GLITCHES!!!! MORE OF THIS GAME IS GLITCHES THAN HALFPIPES!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Looking for an intro to Tantric practice? look elsewhere...
Just a warning to those of you who may be looking for an introduction into the actual practice of Tantra...

This book is part of the "World of Art" series. It is very academic in nature, and can be quite dry. I must say that it would probably be a great asset for someone studying art history or history of religion. It is just NOT by any means a "how-to" manual, or an easy read.As the previous reviewer stated, it does not concentrate on the sexual/spiritual aspects of tantra.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rawson delivers beauty where other books on Tantra fail.
It seems the term "tantric" has become a codeword for "kinky" in the titles and content of too many how-to books available to the Western reader.Perhaps this is because they focus almostexclusively on the titillating sexual rites and positions suggested byTantric practioners.By contrast, Rawson invites the reader to exploreinstead the subtle meanings, artistic values and philosophicalunderpinnings of the Tantric religion. Moreover, Rawson details theTantric fascination with death and mortality and its implications for ourunderstanding of God.This approach results in a more profoundunderstanding of the beauty and richness of the art and practices ofTantra, and gives us the proper perspective on--and perhaps a key toaccessing--the transcendent ecstasy sought by Tantric practioners.

Ifirst read this book as an undergraduate, at a time when I was eager tothrow off some of the Joycean "nets" of our western culture. Rawson showed me exactly where I should look for further inspiration.Ihave since found few books regarding Tantra that succeed so well inproviding a balanced and complete view of Tantric culture, in such asuccinct and finely illustrated volume. And do not misunderstand:this isnot a dry, academic accounting of some cultural curiosity. On thecontrary, Rawson communicates the vibrancy and vitality of the beliefs hedescribes.I found myself enthralled with this work, and Tantra ingeneral, because Tantra places such a high--and exciting--value on passion, sexual ecstasy, and transcendent experiences. An understanding of Tantramight be an ideal balm for the disillusioned Westerner looking to findsomething more than those answers available in the judeo-christian canon.Whether that be the case or no, this volume is an perfect place to startfor anyone interested in the art, practices, philosophy and beliefs ofTantra. And it is assuredly a better place to start than any book whosejacket promises some form of jump-start for your sex life--even if that iswhat you are seeking, after all. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT system but...
i love the ps2. but i didnt know if i should get an xbox, i already have a gamecube. i read so many reviews and the ones 4 ps2 said that ps2 was the best and the ones 4 xbox said xbox was the best. i got so sick of it that i just went out and bought an xbox and kept my ps2 and gamecube. i am much happier havin all 3 systems, because each has there ups and downs, each has a lot of their own special games that r only 4 that 1 system. if there is a game 4 more than 1 of the systems then i just have to decide by like graphics and how realistic it is and stuff like that. and like i love online games. so maybe ps2 and xbox got a game but only ps2's was online id get the ps2 version. there was a recent game that was like this, Madden 2004, i wanted it but only ps2's was online so i got that version. i personally think its a lot better having all 3 systems. my favorite games for each of the systems are right now- PS2- i still like socom the best because of online play, gamecube- soul calibur 2 because link is F****** alsome, xbox-star wars:knights of the old republic because that is one realistic game u get to decide if u wanna b a good or bad guy its alsome.

5-0 out of 5 stars PS2 is the only one worth having!!!
Sure the Gamecube has the Mario games that you can't get on anything else, but most everything else that is on Gamecube, you can get on PS2.Skip the XBOX altogether, it is a waste of money, there are hardly any decent games on it.The PS2 is the best value for the money, and it has the BEST games.Plus it's great as a back-up DVD player.I wouldn't use it as a primary DVD player, unless you get the remote control for it it's a pain in the you-know-what to operate it, and it loads really slow anyways. But as a back-up, or second DVD player, it's just fine. But more importantly are the gaming capabilites. The PS2 is FAR superior to the competition, at least in this humble reviewer's opinion.Of course, the optimum situation would be to have enough money for all the systems, but since that is not possible for most people, then this is the best one, and the best value as I mentioned before.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this Playstation 2!
I got my playstation 2 after playing at my friends house! There are soo many games for this system which makes it worth having. And most people that want it should get it because of all the games and sooner or later more game systems will come out and then they migh t stop making games for the playstation and then youll be sad you missed out so ya take my advice get one! And i know people say that the dvd player doesnt work sometimes but i have not had any problems. I think that the people that have had problems have problems! hahah just kidding! ya get a playstation 2! yaya ... Read more

Handspring Visor Prism
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics

US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Handspring's first foray into the realm of color palmtops, the Visor Prism may not deliver the crispness of displays on the latest Windows CE devices from Casio and Compaq, but it does improve on the Palm IIIc, its main competitor.

While the Prism costs more than the Palm IIIc, its increased color depth and brightness (it delivers 16-bit color compared to the 8-bit color of the IIIc) really shines in gaming and graphical applications. Even the default world map that's used to set geographic location and time appeared more distinct and offered the illusion of 3-D.

Like other Visors, the Prism contains a Springboard module slot, letting users upgrade its capabilities--such as adding an MP3 player, expanding memory, and eventually adding a cell phone (among many options). With the color screen of the Prism, modules such as the eyemodule digital camera really take on new life. With the Prism, the eyemodule takes color pictures, while previous versions of the Visor only allowed users to view them in grayscale.

Further, unlike other Visors, the Visor Prism uses an internal lithium-ion rechargeable battery--a nice touch as the color display would have drained the standard two AAAs quickly. Handspring claims that a fully charged battery should last a week or two with normal use, but we found continuous use of the display, such as with game playing or extended note taking, wore the battery down much faster. However, every time the Prism syncs in the fast-transferring USB cradle, the battery gets charged--and it only takes a few minutes to top off the current level of juice.

Although the color screen only extends the thickness of the Prism by a tenth of an inch compared to previous Visors, it's still twice as thick as the sleek Palm V line of devices. But it is smaller than CE devices such as Casio's EM-500 and the Compaq iPaq, and for its size category of palmtops, it delivers the best colors around. --J. Curtis

Pros:

  • 16-bit color (compared to the Palm IIIc's 8-bit color)
  • 8 MB memory
  • Expandable using Springboard modules

Cons:

  • Color display not as bright or crisp as Pocket PCs

5-0 out of 5 stars Handspring Prism was far ahead of it's time in 2000
When I bought my Prism in 2000, I was getting ready to buy a HP iPac but found the expandability a greater feature. With the Handspring, I bought a GPS module for getting around on my field service jobs at all sorts of cities around the USA, HS modem to hotsync with my home computer, and a foldup keyboard enter data.
PiTech's MemoryPlug for MemoryStick to load all sorts games, eBooks, maps (to transfer to main memory) and all sorts of PDF techmanuals for cleanroom use (paperless environment).I upgraded the 8meg RAM to 16 meg so that the map and documents can load without issues.

All in all, Handspring is a great concept.

Calvin

4-0 out of 5 stars 3 years with my Prisim
I have had my Prisim for 3 years now, The hard shell cover has allowed me to carry, (and sit on )it for all of the 3 years. The 8 meg is plenty for normal use.
It is in use every day, and backedup/charged just as frequently.
I know there are more advanced units out there, with more features and such, but I dred the day I will need to find a replacement that can measure up to this one when it is gone.
I never leave home without it for sure!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant value for PDAphone (Visor Prism+Phone)
I've been using Visor Prism + Phone for about 2 months now, I bought it from a local store which suprisingly still had some stocks and guaranteed the item for 1 year.
Overall, I found it very very useful. I'm not a heavy PDA user, so mainly I use it to read e-books, see photos, games. Visor's 8 Megs is more than enough.
More about the phone, I can't tell how much I admire the modularity of Springboard. Handspring engineer have done great job. The phone and sms function work perfect, compared to the more pricey Tungsten W.
It's better than Treo 270 I assume, on color display (Treo has 4096 while Prism has 65K) and of course using Visor I don't have to worry about flip hinge crack that often happen to Treo user.
Some drawbacks that I found is that battery drained quickly, I also notice that there are some dead pixels in the unit I bought, and last but not least it's quite heavy to carry.
Based on the above, I still think that this product is a great collectible item, worth the price, and everywhere you carry it people were just curious to know. It's a bit rare that to some it's more intriguing than even the popular O2 XDA. Well done Handspring! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars an algebra refresher . . .
If you had taken algebra a few years ago and need a refresher for your GED or ASVAB, this book will be fine.

If you have never taken algebra, or like me, took it 20 years ago and have forgotten most or all of it, this book is almost useless.

at best you get a short paragraph on the theory of the problem to solve, then you get the answer. very seldom do you get a breakdown of the indvidual steps that took you from problem to conclusion. this is the first "Dummies" book which I have ever thrown across a room.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a first timer
i bought this book a year ago after i had painted my car with some handwritten instructions, needless to say the paintjob didnt come out great. after i bought this book, i read through most of it and i was able to redo the paint job. it came out looking great! i really liked that it had the basic instructions listed in the back for handy reference. only thing i didnt like was that it didn't really cover 3 stage paint jobs, but since its a book aimed at begginers, its understandable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Step By Step Car Painting Book
I think the book is written extemely well and orgainized. It explains the processes of painting the car as well as some history and updated information about bodywork, prep, and paint technology today. Very good book for the beginning DIY painter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This was a wonderful book, that just got updated to make it even better. The only things I didn't really like about the old book is that all of the pictures were in b/w and it was begining to become a bit dated. Now with color photos and updated content, this book is pretty much perfect.
Also, ignore the reviews that say it's outdated. They were written before the updated version came out. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It all depends on what you want.
Maybe the yellow/orange LED display is a little harsh. But you have to concede that this is a stylish little piece of electronics. We bought this as a gift for a teenager, and she's been delighted with it's abilities ranging from radio to CD player to nightlight to lullaby machine. It's a good value for the money. If you want better sound or more options, look for something more expensive.

2-0 out of 5 stars Keep looking
An alarm clock with no buzzer, hmmmm......I bought this clock because it was cute and you could play cds in it, but that's about all it's good for.The mystery phrases are silly and although it's nice to be able to wake up to a cd or the radio, there are times when a nice, loud buzzzzzz it all that will wake me up.This clock is all style and no substance.Look elsewhere is my opinion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Totally happy
I was ready for a new TV for my rec room and didn't want to by an analog set that would be outdated in a few years. The Samsung was by far the best deal for the money. The picture is fabuous, particuarly with DVD's.I can't wait till the price of the digital tuners comes down a bit. I'm really looking forward to using this for HDTV broadcasts!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good, Reliable Place to Start -- If You Want to Start!!!
Let's start by saying that I come from a family that likes to try new, likely durable changes in electronics early on. TVs are an example: first B/W 1948; color 1958; stereo 1st year available; etc. So, when this relatively inexpensive flat-screen HDTV came along, it seemed to offer a good way to sample the current state of an evolving technology without having to lay out a lot of cash for something that would rapidly become obsolete. For the sake of fairness, I'll compare it to the conventional stereo 27" RCA that it supplanted. First off, the colors are much more crisp and the outlines and perspective much better defined. This is most apparent for DVD and VCR viewing --less so with cable. You can take this as either a plus or a minus: Yes, you get better clarity, but you also have to suspend your disbelief more. The fact that backgrounds have been overdubbed and the limitations of computer-generated imagry (especially when living beings are in the same frame) become much more apparent than on good old, fuzzier, conventional TV. It is a trade-off, but something that we all can (and, likely will have to) get used to. The stereo (without adding external speakers) is clearly superior to the conventional stereo TV. The HDTV unit is a bit more bulky (wider & deeper at the back). 27" is as small as you can (& should) get with the current technology before distortion at the edges and picture size become an issue: The latter is especially apparent because the HDTV screen is more rectangular -- making everything letter-boxed (and things that have been letter-boxed are even more so). This unit has performed well for the 3 weeks that we've had it. Its operation is simple; the enclosed remote is user-friendly; the TV is compatable with current DVD & VHS players and with cable and existing universal remotes. We'll see about durability; but there's no reason to suspect that it would be predisposed to any more problems than any other TV. So the real issue is whether it's worth paying 2 to 3-fold more for HDTV than for a conventional stereo TV of equivalent size. My advice: If you use TV primarily for cable, antenna, or dish viewing, wait until the price comes down. If you're like me, and use TV primarily for VHS and DVD viewing, the increased quality of the picture makes it worth considering -- but remember, you're more likely to notice that the chase sceens etc. are trumped up!
Addendum: I's been 3 mos. now; things are working fine, and my opinion is unchanged!

Philips FWC380 Compact Stereo System
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $159.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Enjoy powerful sound, flexibility, and convenience in a small package with the Philips FWC380 mini hi-fi system with 3-CD changer and dual cassette deck. This mini system contains 120 watts total power (60 watts per channel RMS stereo), with virtual environment control (cinema, hall, concert modes) and four digital sound control modes (optimal, jazz, rock, techno). Or press the Optimal Sound Mix (OSM) button for one-touch optimal sound settings that enhance your listening pleasure.

The three-way bass reflex speaker system is equipped with one 5.5-inch woofer, one 2.5-inch tweeter, and one 1-inch piezzo, all housed in a three-way enclosure for a wider range of frequency response and deeper bass sound. Boosting bass response as much as 8 dB (nearly three times more than normal), the three-step dynamic bass boost--via the jog control--yields full, rich tonal quality at all volume levels. If you want to add even more low end to your system, the FWC380 comes with output signals for connection to a subwoofer.

The three-CD changer with motorized drawer has multidisc play capability, providing three hours of continuous music. The CD player plays CD-R and CD-RW discs, so you can enjoy home-recorded discs over the entire lifetime of the player. The direct play button lets you select and play any CD in the carousel at the touch of a button, or change out the other two discs while the third one continues playing without interruption. One-touch CD synchro recording allows the cassette deck and CD player to communicate with one another to synchronize the start of a cassette recording with the start of a CD or a CD program. Repeat, random, shuffle one/all, and CD programming are standard playback features on this mini system.

Other great features are a video/auxiliary input for connection of an accessory piece such as a DVD player, TV, or external cassette deck, and a digital AM/FM tuner with 40 station-preset memory. A clock, alarm, and sleep timer are included, so you can wake up to music from your favorite CD or radio station. And the three display modes show different amounts of display on the LCD, including a night mode display that turns off most of the system's lights.

Completing the FWC380 is the design itself. Rich metallic finishings, dramatic surfacing, a large, multicolor FTD display, and an ergonomic control layout optimize this system for comfort and convenience.

The Philips FWC380 hi-fi mini system comes with a push-button remote control and a one-year warranty on parts and labor. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Sound, Not Enough Bass
When I bought this system I was looking for a great value, and I got one. I have had this stereo for about six months now. Setup was easy with the quick setup guide. Just plug the speakers and FM antenna into the receiver, plug it into the wall, and press play. Then, all FM stations are then preset into the system. It has an AM loop antenna too, but who listens to AM now days anyway? I have been a little surprised of how well this it has held up. The only physical damage to it is from me. The end of the FM antenna wire that snaps into the system has had to be restripped, mainly because I snapped it in and snapped it out so many times. The FM was very good at the start but then got worse because of me. It has a dual-logic tape deck on the bottom of the receiver. Dual logic means you can control the tapes by the remote control. I haven't used any tapes yet, but I'm sure it works fine. Then there is the quality 3 CD changer, oh it's just great. I put my CDs in the tray, sit back, and then press the number to the CD I want to play from my remote. There are some things that are only one that remote, or only on the receiver. The repeat, sleep, and shuffle buttons are only on the remote. The clock/timer, tape options, dim mode, and program buttons are only on the receiver. I don't know why this is. The sleep can be set for 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes to shut off automatically. The timer is like a really loud alarm clock except for this one you can pick what you wake up to; CD, tape, or AM/FM. You can even program what track on the CD you want to wake up to. I have also hooked my system up to our satellite system with a cheap RCA cable through my system's AUX IN jack. Wow, from one dinky speaker to two huge speakers was a great improvement. Using my stereo's Cinema feature with its Incredible Surround made it just like surround sound without the extra speakers, and the Cinema mode is just right for watching movies. As sound quality goes, this system can get pretty loud. I can play music and my room and then go around the house still listening to my music. It's not loud enough to bother the neighbors though, I can hear a little when I'm just outside our house. I am going to fix that problem by adding a powered subwoofer to my system. It has a subwoofer out jack and also a digital out jack for recording onto a CD using a CD recorder. I guess that about sums it all up, thanks for reading.

Nice little system for the price.Sounds great and looks great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular sound and value
I recently purchased this system at what I consider a superiorvalue. The system is simply an incomparable value in its price range. As noted by other reviewers, the Optimal Sound Mix button provides the best range mix regardless of the source--tape, CD, etc. The system is easy to operate from the unit itself or by remote control and the 3-way bass reflex speakers (yes, they ARE 3-way rather than 2-way....another plus) provide near studio-quality sound reproduction throughout the volume range. I compared the system to others ranging from $100 to over $150 from other common and high-profile manufacturers, and if sound quality is your number one priority over feature bells and whistles, there is no better value, and it "feels" more solid and sturdy than others, like when you close the door on a quality vehicle and know that it's solid in comparison with others. Secondarily, whereas other manufacturers frequently offer 1-year parts with 90-day labor warranties, Phillips provides a full-year warranty for the labor as well.......a strong indication that you can expect NO problems. Two thumbs up for this quality powerhouse! ... Read more
