5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth a second look
This is one book that slipped under my radar screen. I passed it up several times but once you get past the cloyingly bright graphics and the unfortunate coffee table format this volume is well worth the effort. As it turns out, Hybridspace delivers what might be seen one day as the first accessible account of the impact of digital technologies on architectural design. The introduction is particularly clear, intelligent and succinct and the firm profiles are condensed, neat introductions to the works of an emerging and talented generation of architects.

To boot, if you get rid of the silly jacket, you'll have a handsome, black cloth bound volume that will sit nicely your shelves.

1-0 out of 5 stars Already extinct
I read this book when it first came out, and my initial reaction was that it was an overhyped piece of trash. Nowhere in the book is there one piece of relevant information, with regard to the world of architecture (or anything else, for that matter). I decided to give it some time and try rereading it, to understand what my colleagues saw in it. I still can't figure it out. This book was extinct the moment it hit the public realm. I'd suggest spending your time (and money) elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars Potential Unfullfilled
Unfortunately, this book is, almost exclusively, one of the worst attempts at analytic architecture that I have ever read.It oversimplifies andunderestimates the depth of sensitivity with which architects are usingemerging computer technologies to explore new domains of design philosophy. Having quite a familiarity of the the firms that the author hurriedlysquimmed over in his text, I found no new insights or comprehensiveframeworks with which to view the current architectural landscape. If youare looking for attractive, computer renderings, then by all means purchasethis book. But if you are searching to refine your understanding of thecurrent architectural culture, find a different author. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Virtual Necessity
It is hard to find books on architecture and information technology which do not read like a manifesto. Indeed the strength of John Beckmann's "The Virtual Dimension" can be found in its inclusive and attimes playfully eclectic scope. Rarely do editors working in this genreassemble into one volume such a conflicting cast of theorists, writers, artists and architects. Featured in a collection of 26 essays are authorsas diverse as Paul Virilio, Stahl Stenslie, Mark C. Taylor, Stan Allen,Gareth Branwyn, Stelarc, Bernard Cache and many more. Aside from thesometimes bizarre prophesies of writers like Hans Moravec the essays inthis book generally form a balanced survey of the many important issuesfacing our digital age. For anyone interested in computers, architecturetheory, electronic art or the problematic relationship between cyberspaceand the physical world Mr. Beckmann's profusely illustrated book is avirtual necessity. > > ... 5-0 out of 5 stars thought-and-design provoking
Though a book of the 90's I have just used this book as a text in my course on virtual architecture in our computer graphics program. It worked superbly. The text stimulated long fruitful discussions (some for three unbroken hours) and put students in the state of mind to produce 3D based sites of significant meaning. Students took to heart Anders cautionary assessments on designing cyberspace and produced work that leapt well ahead of the work they were producing prior to the discussions. Anders chooses all of the best sources for his analysis of the similarities and contrasts between actual space and cyberspace, especially his use of Jean Piaget's interactional psychology as a base.

5-0 out of 5 stars Envisioning Cyberspace Optimistically
Something that makes Peter Anders' _Envisioning Cyberspace_ especially interesting is that it's the work of an architect and designer, for whom the issues of designing workable, user-centered cyberenvironments arecomprehensible. He's gathered and comments upon a wide-ranging collectionof work that he finds interesting, efforts that approach and address thebig issues if not always fully realizing them.It often reminds me of the1991 anthology _Cyberspace: First Steps_ edited by Michael Benedikt(another architect), or some of the hot early-'90s books on VirtualReality, in that it's full of enthusiasm and enjoyment at the elegance ofpossible solutions. In this hard-nosed commercially-driven era that's abreath of fresh air; the real kind, not the virtual.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough introduction to cyberspaces
This is an extremely thorough introduction to cyberspaces and has many beautiful illustrations. This is an intellectually sophisticated book for non-computer scientists. It begins with a rigorous intellectual picture andthen continues to survey existing cyberspaces with many insights along theway, that will please even techno-nerds.

The book fills in many detailsin the history of building cyberspaces.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Exploration: Layout Design and Sheet Composition
I was impressed with this author's approach. I know the subject area was lacking adequate coverage especially for students of architecture and/or professionals. The author demonstrates in myriad ways how variousarchitectural illustrations such as axonometrics, perspectives, elevations, sections, plans and details along withtext, titles and photographicimages can be effectively designed in sheet composition for creative 2-Dpresentations of remarkable inventiveness. This book offers a superbreference in an area otherwise under-represented in design education.Highly recommended! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not that great
i was looking for a book on this subject, the writer the publisher, it all looked perfect. but the book is soooo boring, after reaching a long way into the book you waste your time on artists rooms and clubs!! really! then when we finally start, it is like for ever, the process seems so slow... the book ofcourse is full of the writersown sketches which might not appeal to every one. what you might find here, at this price, you'll find for sure in more cheaper and more focused more useful books. i wouldn't recommend it personally.

5-0 out of 5 stars I absolutely love this book!
This book got me through architectural school.Hand renderings were never my strong point until I got this book. My rendering skills went up considerably (along with my confidence and grades) and I still reference this book today in my professional career. The book gives great examples and the tips from the professionals are very informative. This is definately one of the best books on how to make profession looking presentations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tracing Book!
I am an interior design student who LOVES this book. I had been struggling with drawing people in my renderings and this book really saved my drawings. You can be the best interior artist and have perfected drawing rooms, but if you stick an akward looking person in the center of your room....you have just completely ruined it. This book helps artists, interior designers, architects, students, teachers....everyone.

It has pages and pages filled with people of ALL sizes and shapes. It also has people sitting, laying down, kneeling, etc. There are some pictures of cars, boats, planes, & trees/plants.
Conviently, all of the book's pages can be torn out with perforated edges. You can choose which page you want and slip it right underneath your drawing to trace.

I looked and lookd for a tracing guide and this book is the best out there. If you need help with any kind of human rendering, this book will do the trick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
As a landscape architecture student this is a great resource for finding all types of people and trees and cars in all kinds of positions, plan view or perspective. Its an essential reference when you are looking for variation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for interior design
I was expecting to see specific types of furniture in addition to trees, cars, and people. I don't see why there needs to be so many people pages. These are not very useful. As an interior design student, the book is not very useful but ok for architecture students. Also, I don't think the objects are in scale. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
Evans' book is retread of an early 1980's volume, and most of the book seems to be picked up from the earlier version. There is a lot of clip art, which is now hopelessly outdated (guys in suits, women in dresses, etc.) and should have been deleted. Evans actually had to the gall to title this book "THE NEW" when it is basically a reprint of a hopelessly out-of-date volume. Architectural illustration in this day of advance computer graphics relies heavily on the latest styles of drawing, illustration, fashion, cars etc. and the ancient art techniques and drawings offered here would earmark any illustration as hopelessly dated. Nothing like an illustration of a 15 year-old-car parked in from of a million dollar home to mark you as a hopelessly out-of-touch illustrator. There is a small section of more recent full color illustrations inserted into the black and white remainder, but again, the illustration style, done in early computer graphics, is muddy, dated and not very well done. Any volume claiming to be the "ULTIMATE" should include a CD with vector files of the art for use by the reader/illustrator. Evans must think that there is a large pool of architects out there who are going to forego their slick and beautiful clipart 3-D disks in favor of scanning in Evans' dated art as a bitmap and trying to work them into their renderings. Most of the text seems to have been picked up verbatim from the 1980's edition, and describes illustration techniques in terms of t-squares, triangles, pencil lines and ink! Computer graphics doesn't seem to even exist in this edition! Despite, the gee-whiz cover color illustration, this edition is a tired, out-of-date reprint turkey that should never have seen daylight -- the publisher and Evans should both be ashamed to have put out this edition. The hype on the cover is totally inacurate and borders on false advertising. Stay clear of this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars The New Complete Illustration Guide (2nd Edition)
The book's contents are very useful & helpful to me.I like the drawings of people presented in different scales & sizes. Colored figures are also helpful because it saves me time to think of what color to put on clothings & cars for my drawings. There are various vehicles in different angles/ views that I found very useful for most of my illustration.I strongly recommend this book to all illustrators whether they're beginners or professionals because it's thebest book that I've ever used. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent 'Handbook' for design modeling...
This text does prove and excellent `handbook' covering a wide variety of modeling techniques. While Trudeau does not tend to go into great detail, its treatment of each subject is practical and clearly presented. Though the examples may not provide new insight "for Architects" using traditional modeling materials (i.e. chipboard or foam core) it is certainly a valuable resource for product designers or other design professionals working in more involved mediums where such supporting texts are few and far between.

Overall an good resource, especially for students interested in accelerating their model making experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars an architect's opinion
I chose this book to help with a new model, and because the book's title claims it is "for Architects."The actual information forarchitects is meager and sophomoric. The book appears to focus more onsculptural models for product designers.Despite its title, this bookhad nothing to offer me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for any modelmaker.
I am a professional modelmaker. Initially I was glad to find anything written about the craft as a profession. After reading through it more than a couple of times, I beleive it to be a well written book. It is very informative, with its "hands on" way of explaining a topic. It is also filled with great photos. I highly reccommend this book to students or anyone interested in the design or engineering fields. ... Read more

Even though this is meant for graduate level and professionals, I ordered this book for our jr. high-aged homeschooled children, who are very interested in architecture and building models of their plans.I am happy with the way this book presents things simply and clearly, but does not restrict itself to only foam core board constructions. It introduces other ideas and techniques for models that my kids are excited to try. This book fulfills my wish to find a resource that will be of use to them for years and years...no matter how far they go into the field of architecture and model building.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Book Has What You REALLY Need To Know!
I'm fed up with all these drawing books out there that have tons upon Tons of text trying to tell you what to do. "Do this, DON'T do That", trying to tell you with WORDS how to DRAW! (Oxymoron?) And they always manage to leave out the few things you actually NEED to know! (Like paper type, medium, size, etc.) Usually written by people who either don't know how to draw in the first place, or don't know how to teach, or both.
WHICH IS EXACTLY WHY THIS BOOK IS SO GREAT!! It has almost NO text at all! Just page after page of clearly reproduced drawings. And the minimal text is limited to exactly the information you want to see: what medium the drawings were done in, what type of paper, size, and purhaps the most useful: HOW MANY HOURS EACH DRAWING TOOK!!
If you're good at studying good drawings but always wondering how long they should take and what kind of tools you should use, get this book!
By the way, there are a whole bunch of minor mis-prints and typos in the book, but just ignore them and use your common sense and you'll be fine.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but only great if you take his course
Mike Lin's graphic course filled a big hole in my professional development. If you're willing to buy into his methods I can't recommend it highly enough. Both his books are good intros to his drawing method but they can only go so far by themselves.

If you're serious about transforming your sketching and rendering skills, take his course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful when learning rendering skills

5-0 out of 5 stars The difference between reading and understanding...
I am suprised by the view from Russia. I think reading a book and understanding it are two issues which are completely different. Probably the reviewer does not understand themeaning of Axonometric and ObliqueDrawing, or may be not trained in a related field to be equipped tounderstand the book. This book has a clear emphasis in design and use ofvarious axonometric types for design presentation. I believe that when itcomes to this particular topic uddin's book is the only complete source atthis time. The strength of the book is inits showing the context ofAxonometric drawings in Design Analysis, Design Process, and in FinalComposed Presentation. There is a brief chapter on contemporary architectswork using such drawings. The chapter on shades andshadows isparticularly useful, since it simplifies shadow casting fromsimple tocomplex 3D axonometric drawings.

5-0 out of 5 stars extremely useful book
I would recommend this book to all design professionals and especially to all teaching professionals and students in the field of architecture.I used the book as a guide to paraline drawing as a design tool last springin a studio setting at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco.Themystery of axonometric drawing was dispelled and my students were quicklyusing and producing detail and large-scale drawings to explain theirintent. This is a real winner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous text for academic instruction!!
Gives a great overview of the "history" of oblique drawings. Perfect for the text for architectural foundation classes focusing on drawing and avant-garde interpretations. A wonderful portfolio of VERY diverse drawings is included, for students to see professionals workingwith wnat might seem an esoteric concept while in school.

It really hastwo personalities. The technical section at the first half is more than isincluded in drawing classes, highly technical. The second "half"gives a wonderfully deep cross-section of examples. These combine to serveas visual adis for students and professionals as well [severalarchitecvture firms in my community -Southern California- have purchasedthis book for therir reference collection]. I think this speaks of therange of appeal. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting topic. Disappointing results.
I read this book in 2003, so this might be the reason I wasn't thrilled. The topic is interesting, but in a few years, the content gets so dated, that it is frustrating: the render quality might have been good those days, but the clear lack of indirect lighting, the deepblack shadows which erase all shading details, the use of clean, raytraced reflections makes it very computer-looking.
A current book like Exposé, by Ballistic Publishing, with more art-oriented computer works is clearly a major leap forward: attention to detail, materials, dirt & grime (not only for the architectural renderings).
And the long lists of displayed hardware & software might have been interesting at the time of publishing, but this has become largely irrelevant after even a short time. It is better to not go into much detail about these facts.
There is also a great lack of detailed information about "how things are done".
So I can't recommend the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars A cautious note:(
I am sorry to say that i was disappointed with this book after purchase. At initial glance i do acknowledge that this book is well presented with full color pages. But after close analysis i can say that certainillustrations are repeatedand could also be accessed through theinternet. The text is brief and can be recommended only for the new entrywould-be computer designer and lacks the depth for the serious architect. Furthermore the author has wasted much space in the book describing theprograms, hardware etc that the architecture firms have employed, that isnon-relevant and is extensively iterated that tends to annoyance andfrustration for the reader. The feeling here is that a good opportunityhas gone begging due to a lack of thorough research into the workspresented and a great reliance on colour illustrations that lack theinformation to support them.

5-0 out of 5 stars more praise for digital architecture
i have to echo the other review's comments - this is an excellent book, full of great ideas for graphic presentations.i've owned this book for several months now, and i refer to it almost weekly.another great titlein this area is "hyper-realistic" - check it out. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor graphics content
The intention of this book is noble but the results are poor ! Out of the 192 pages only 22 are in color, and this limits the reader's comprehension of the techniques the author tries to illustrate. The total lack of large color visuals causes this book to provide only a partial presentation of composite-collage-graphic-work; most of the photos are only 2.5x3.5 inches, the printing quality is marginal. Furthermore, the mayority or the work presented is 7 to 10 years old, most of these techniqueshave now been supeceeded by more creative mix media being used by Architects and designers in every-day practice. If you are interested in hybrid drawings and mixed media, check-out: "Archigram", it presents the amazing work of Peter Cook, Ron Heron,Warren Chalk, and many others who pioneered this technique back in the early 70's, their work is still ahead of it's time today !! thru their exciting visuals they have influenced architects world wide for decades !!( available thru Amazon.com) five stars for Mr. M. Saleh Uddin's illustration on the cover of this book but only one star for it's contents, I was totally disapointed, I returned the book !!

4-0 out of 5 stars great graphic contents
if your looking for an idea book on graphic illustration of architectural ideas, look no further - this book is loaded with great examples of the work of many leading architects.there is also helpful text describing howthe work was put together.together with the two other books by theauthor, you can have a great resource to draw from (no pun intended).myonly complaint is that the book isn't avaliable for a bit less money, butit's still worth the price. ...
