    Editorial Review

To listen to its proponents, network (or multilevel) marketing is the greatest thing since sliced bread: top performers earn $1 million a month, reside in alluring places like Aspen and Kauai, and still find quality time to happily raise children and lovingly cement spousal relationships. Contending that those who fail to make it that far are ill prepared for the initial challenges they face, Mark Yarnell and Rene Reid Yarnell--married network marketers who are among the industry's leaders, as well as members of a University of Illinois faculty that teaches the only college-certified course on the subject in the U.S.--have written Your First Year in Network Marketing: Overcome Your Fears, Experience Success, and Achieve Your Dreams! to convey both advice and inspiration to newcomers. Peppered with personal anecdotes that bring their recommendations to life, the two offer logical strategies for overcoming rookie obstacles and kick starting a career. Individual chapters explore issues such as battling rejection, avoiding depression, handling prospects, supervising recruits, and managing time. Each concludes with a comprehensive summary, but save it for later reference and don't skip the preceding narrative, or you risk missing the book's considerable motivational component. --Howard Rothman ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A real do's and dont's guide
This book really is a do's and dont's guide to networking. Mark has covered everything from networking friends and family to meeting and greeting business execs. A must read for anyone looking to build their client base or simply improve communication skills.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is ok.
I followed the directions in the manual that said that if you weren't successful in it in the first year you should try something else.

Well, I worked at it for about 9 months and no success. This MLM strategy is very well thought out and good for people who want to push products.I'm more of a service kind of guy. This is probably why I didn't do so well in it.

MLM is not bad business, nor is it evil.Just think of it as a convenient store with many business partners. That's all it is.The better business people are more successful. That's it.

    -Calvin G. Newman

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Informative
Mark and Renee Yarnell created this book based on their years of experience and astounding success in MLM. Their network is world famous and comprises sales in the millions of dollars per year. Quite simply, the Yarnell's represent everything we dream of when getting involved in network marketing.

This book presents an in-depth look at the major areas of concern for the new distributor: sales, recruiting, training, goal setting, and of course, succeeding. Network marketing is not about taking advantage of people. You won't succeed like that. Networking for success is about helping other people achieve their goals. Along the way, you also have your dreams realized. According to the Yarnells, success is a matter of perseverance and integrity.

This book is well written and will inspire you to take action to realize your dreams. It is now about six years old, but the ideas and principles remain valid today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!! Excellent read, kept me interested throughout.
Basically, I just want to share with everybody that I'm currently enrolled in a Marketing 360 class at UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago) and I've had the pleasure and priviledge to be taught by Dr. King himself. Dr. King is a Harvard alumni, it was there that he recieved his doctorate in business administration. What's most fascinating about Dr. King is his dedication and continuing learning about network marketing. He has researched extensively on this new trend of business and even wrote a book in which you can find at Amazon.com. It's called "The New Professionals" and IT IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK! I personally recommends it to everyone, I have bought mine from Amazon about 2 weeks ago and I can say that I've learned muchmore than I've ever before. It is an objective reading which presents the history and development of network marketing and also counter and clarifies many scrutinies in which this industry have been subjected to. The power of time leverage and in diversifying income have long been overlooked and this book does a great job of giving information about it all.

In addition, if anyone wishes to see the great man in person himself, he organizes an annual Network Marketing Certification seminar that is both national and international. Myself, am very interested in it. You can see it here at this website: http://netwkmarketing.com/

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wave of the future--The New Professionals
If you are contemplating getting into a MLM company, are sitting on the fence and need just a little bit of convincing, read The New Professionals byJames King and Charles Robinson.

A lot of myths and misconceptions abound in this industry, these two gentlemen offer the facts. Network marketing is growing by leaps and bounds and The New Professionals explains why.

    4-0 out of 5 stars The network is King . . .
The New Professional makes clear the evolution of multilevel and direct marketing. Like many folks, I had a pretty dim view of the overly aggressive sales tactics and misleading meeting agendas that I ran into with many of the earlier direct marketing efforts. Now I see that things have changed for the better - much better! Inventory is not in your home, it's not in someone else's garage, it is at the distributor and easily obtained through the internet. Supply chain management is superb in these new companies.

For example, King and Robinson provide statistics to show why direct marketing is a robust and very efficient model for introducing some products into the market place. And, they show why the type of person involved in network marketing today is truly a professional: "Of key interest, the research found 'successful (direct and network marketing) sales people have a communication style or social style that encourages the building of relationships with their customers . . . The most successful sales leaders have a combination of relationship and task orientation' (in their communication styles)."

Network Marketing and multilevel marketing are synonymous terms. They are defined by a business model which pays commissions on multiple levels of the sales organization. Network Marketing/Selling differs from Direct Selling in that Network Marketing:

    1. Focuses on relationships rather than on closing the sale or booking an order
    2. Focuses on information sharing
    3. Independent business owner (IBO)
    4. Commissions on multiple levels of sales (not just retail of the IBO)

The role of the network marketing channel is to accelerate the movement of products using the most efficient distribution technique: word-of-mouth communication.

This is an excellent book to bring you up to date on the network marketing phenominon and to understand the new business models (yes, there are many). ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars not happy with this book
it wasn't what i thought it would be.i don't want to make my first million through "pyramid schemes"

5-0 out of 5 stars Not ascheme, a method of marketing..that works
I am amused and happy that so many people are still in the dark about Network Marketing or MLM. While I agree that network marketing organizations are configured in the form of a pyramid,so are billion dollar corporations, schools and churhes.

It is not illegal. Nor should it be.

In normal corporate management, you start at the bottom and have to try to pass those above you (good luck!) In most cases, it takes 25-40 years to move up that pyramid.

In network marketing, you also start at the bottom but can pass anyone who is above you in your line of sponsorship. You are not limited. In network marketing, you have the option to do in 2-5 years what takes most people 25-40 years (if they ever make it) to do the conventional way.

MARY AND WAYNE do an excellent job explaining network marketing and offer a system to literally make your first million.

Going back to my opeing line, why am I happy and amused about the critics of network marketing? It's very simple, when this great method of marketing becomes obvious to the masses, the opportunity will be gone. As long as there will be critics, there will also be critics. Sort of like franchising back in the 60's (franchising was almost shut down by the government in 1963) At that time, nobody would touch it. Now you can't get a good franchise in a good location anymore. It will happen to MLM too. That is why I am building now before that happens.

Good book Wayne and Mary. I am recommending this to everyone in my downline.

5-0 out of 5 stars Re: semi-legal pyramid scheme
Alot of people think that network market is a semi-legal pyramid scheme, but not all network marketing companies are a pyramid. If many of you do your research, you'll see that companies such as life plus, melaleuca, market america, etc. are true network marketing companies they'll really compensate you if you refer people to their company & products. Before anyone pre-judges a network marketing company, do your research on each company, plan, products, etc.The true pyramid schemes are the one's that you get in the mail that ask you to send between a $1 - $5 to each name & address, and in return, you'll make millions within a few months...that's a true pyramid scheme, I know because I've lost money to these pyramids through the mail.I now know how to tell the difference between a pyramid & a real opportunity. These pyramid schemes give real & great network marketing companies a bad reputation. So again, do your research on a company before enrolling or sending out money. There are truly real gold mines out there, so please do your research by reading articles on them, and check the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) . Thank you. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars It's Kind of Dated!!!
Sure, there are the defenders of MLM and the detractors. There are those who think that the "J-O-B" is a dirty word, and others who make their livelihood and support their families and build great careers with companies, because that's the conviction they have about their God-given calling.

Let's stop defending the MLM people. So what if the FTC gave AMWAY the great bill of health and it's the grand-daddy of them all. Big deal. We all know folks who have hoodwinked others in their network schemes. I was one who was encouraged to use half-truths and enlist others in a cause to buy books and tapes which contained many falsehoods, and it wasn't ethical then, nor is it ethical today.

This doesn't mean that the founders are crooks, it just means that those who peddle these kind of Hedges books are misleading others and promising things which they cannot deliver. Period.

Let's get smart and work smart. That is, find your calling and stick to it and give it your all, and thank God you have a job and can support a family. If you don't like your job, you can get into a business of your own. It's that simple. Just don't trample on the thousands of others who found satisfaction in the work force.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sorry, MLM is more than just ethical.
In response to a post made by "Thomas J. Theobald" back on MArch 26, 2003 RE: Sorry, MLM just is not ethical. This individual refers to MLM as pure "hype and glory" and says it is "unethical."

He even goes on to suggest "that most MLM corporations to make sure to do their dance one step removed from "illegal," to keep themselves clear of charges of pyramiding, ponzi schemes, or racketerring."

What planet has this guy been living on for the last 25 years? Is he not aware that even the hardened FTC gave Amway, the great grandaddy of MLM corporations a clean bill ofhealth regarding their marketing strategies way back in the late 70's?

Is he not aware that major corporations, those who have a lot to lose by aligning themselves with less than desireable marketing plans or companies now utilize MLM or Network Marketing?

MLM or Network Marketing has come of age. It is the "Wave of the Future." It is the opportunity of the century and especially in times like now where we are entering into a jobless society.

MLM is way of marketing. Yes it has layers of management but don't all corporations also have layers of management?

Obviously Mr. Theobald did n ot take much time to truly investigate MLM or he would know that MLM is not an "illegal pyramid scheme." Also, he should know that MLM does not "hire" people. MLM offers business opportunities to independent contractors. This is not a "job" so the supposition that "you should not have to pay for a job" holds about as much weight as Mr. Theobalds other ridiculous charges.

As far as MLM products being "overpriced", MLM products are more expensive because they are of a better quality.

Since this individual mentions Amway repeatedly, I have to wonder if Mr. Theobald just has a gripe about Amway in particular in place of the overall MLM industry. I also have to wonder if he tried a "poke it with a stick method" in the MLM company that he obviously failed in.

Mr. Theobald also conveniently forgets to mention the wholesale discounts that MLM representives get so the accusation that "changing your buying habits" would put a strain on a new recruits cash flow is without basis. Also, I know of no good MLM company that "requires", as Mr. Theobald suggests to buy huge amounts of products. So once again, Mr. Theobald's comments are without basis.

MLM may very well be the last bastion for true financial freedom. Why knock it?

And Mr. Theobald, try reading the book with an open mind and get involved with a good MLM company that offers good products and a personal development program as well.

Although I am not an Amway distributor, I would suggest that Mr. Theobald enroll in Amway just for the personal development. It will clean out your mind of junk obviously from reading too many tabloids or even other supposed respectable publications that only print the "hype" against MLM.

5-0 out of 5 stars Howard Solomon
For me this book is really GREAT. ( turn the page 180+ ) The characters being mentioned here are not fictitious. I read this book before, but just recently i happened to communicate with HOWARD SOLOMON ( the heavy hitter ).

I asked his business and i found out that he is into www.freelife.com i research it and look what happened. The company that he is engage in is for me the best company that i have been looking for. Howard became my upline and in fact he visited the Philippines and we conducted series of seminars around Manila. Im happy to be associated with the big guys in MLM like Howard. He is coming back on March 12, 2005.

It's good to have a BIG TIME upline in MLM. It gives you the direction to perform and move fast. So, if you are looking for the right company with the right upline then why not click www.freelife.com and email me briel@lycos.com

5-0 out of 5 stars The book that started the revolution!
Richard Poe is the voice of network marketing. His articles in Success Magazine, Network Marketing: The Most Powerful Way To Reach Consumers in the 90's, May 1990 and We Create Millionaires, February 1992 brought network marketing to the public and business communities. Wave 3 became an instant best seller and introduced the concept of mass marketed MLM--a new generation of network marketing opportunities that simplified and automated many aspects of the business.

No longer did distributors have to warehouse and deliver products, drive miles to meet prospects and send massive mailouts, now WAVE 3 networkers came to rely on drop shipping and auto ship programs, voice mail, 3 way conference calls, video passout, satellite broadcasts, fax-on-demand services and other technicalogical innovations to grow their businesses, faster, easier and better than ever before.

Now instead of coming home from work and going to a meeting, they can simply dial for dollars or put a prospect on a three way call with their sponsor. It also eliminated the cost of paying for expensive hotel rooms to host meetings.

You no longer had to order cases and cases of product, now you could be placed on auto ship and have your products delivered right to your door. And the company will also dropship the product right to your customers door.

With Wave 3 created tremdous growth in the 1990's. Today, publicly traded network marketing stocks are among the best performing stocks in the stock market. And an ever growing number of Fortune 500 companies are creating network marketing companies as separate divisions to market their products. Some examples include Citigroup, Avon, and Rexall.

As we are rapidly moving towards a jobless society, Network Marketing may be the average persons best change to survive in an economy where there are few jobs. In the 1990's, we saw corporate Americans flee from the corporate world to the network marketing, a tradition that has continued through to the 21st century.

Wave 3 started the revolution and is an excellent book. I would recommend Wave 4 in place or in addition to this one. And the WAVE 4 Way to building your downline.

3-0 out of 5 stars Network marketing can't apply in Hong Kong
It is good to sell the dream of freedom to Hong Kong people, but actually, no one knows if you can gain large sum of money after you invest your money and efforts in this company.
Also, there are many illegal companies, which are working as MLM structure, i.e. pyramid scheme. Those companies are rather people oriented than product oriented. Before they enter the company, they need to pay a large sum of entrance fees, and they earn bonus by referring the scheme to people, but not recruiting sales representatives to earn commissions by selling products. Very often, those companies easily wind up. Hong Kong people are mixing up the concepts of these companies with those legitimate MLM companies, such as, Amway, Nu Skin and Mary Kay. Therefore, most of the Hong Kong people are not faithful to the MLM companies as they are too risky for them to join. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing book. Not enough content for price.
I bought this book because I thought it would teach me techniques on building a downline (hence the name - "Wave 3 Way to Building Your Downline").There are tons of stories on how people got into MLM, failed, stuck through it, fought through hard times, and with persistence made tons of money with an MLM company. These stories really don't tell you people's techniques on building a downline. There maybe a pointer her or there, but the majority of this book is just filler (Joe didn't make much money, joe went to MLM meeting, Joe was mad it was an MLM meeting, Joe joined MLM anyway, MLM failed/went out of business, Joe joined different MLM, went through tough times, Joe then made tons of money).

Most titles of each chapter in this book refer to a technique or concept. And each chapter is nothing but a couple MLM success stories POORLY based around the subject of the chapter.Maybe about 5 % of each chapter really develops on the technique or concept suggested by the chapter's title. The rest is, as I've said before, nothing but MLM success story telling. If you took the filler out of this book, you'd have about 5 to 10 pages worth of valid information.I use a highlighter in every book I read. This book is about 220 pages long.I try to underline everything that's important. For the majority of this book, I only highlighted a sentence or two every five pages.I had a hard time giving this book 2 stars.I really wish I could have given it 1 and 1/2.If this book had cost 5$ instead of 10$, maybe I wouldn't have had such a hard time giving it 2 stars.

Don't expect to learn the ins and outs of building your downline from this book.Expect a load of MLM hype instead.

TIP:Always be wary of a book that has nothing but 5 star reviews. In this case, I bet Richard Poe (considering he's an MLMer, he probably knows lots of people), talked to some of his MLM buddies to come to the websites and give him a bunch of 5 star reviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Very Insightful!
I don't normally finish many of the books I purchase or borrow.I get to a point where I understand the ideas and then loose interest due to a redundancy of the main theme. However, Mr. Poe's book is much differentand as soon as I received this book, I finished it in two evenings. It wasthat good.At least for me. I enjoyed this book for two simplereasons:

1.Mr. Poe qualifies all the ideas he presents, with a"field tested," "tried and true," real life story froma third party. The people Mr. Poe interviewed also revealed how theyarrived at their solutions, and where new network marketers can expect tofind difficulty. This helps shatter the illusion that you have to be a"special-breed" to succeed in network marketing, when in realityyou only need a burning desire.

2.There are surprises in every chapterand new spins on common problems.Using the interview style offers thereader many interesting details about some very successful networkmarketers that they probably wouldn't know otherwise. The many differentways that people become successful in different companies and fromdifferent backgrounds, constantly kept me interested.

The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It

5-0 out of 5 stars Small Business Owners are NOT Entrepreneurs
For anyone starting a business or struggling to take his or her business to next level, I highly recommend The E-Myth revisited.

Falsely, many business owners are self-employed individuals with the extra burden of maintaining the aura of being an Entrepreneur.

Michael Gerber's book provides a successful model for becoming a true business owner. First, he explains how there are three distinct personalities involved in running a business. Secondly, and my favorite part, he clarifies the distinction between working ON your business instead of working IN your business. Finally, he constructs a working model on how to build a successful business.

Chapter 1 describes "The Entrepreneurial Myth." Mr. Gerber emphasizes over and over again, most business owners make the fatal assumption that if they understand the TECHNICAL work of a business, they understand the BUSINESS that does the technical work. Just because you know how to be a carpenter or accountant doesn't mean that you know how to run a carpentry or accounting business.

Chapter 2, "The Entrepreneur, the Manager, and the Technician," the three personalities in every person who goes into business. Vision, pragmatism, and action, the contributions of these personalities, are all required for success.

Chapters 3 to 6 explain different stages in the life of a business.

Chapter 7 dissects and uncovers the new revolution in business today.

Chapter 8 outlines what is called a Franchise Prototype. Not to be confused with retail franchises, it is a method of creating a business autopilot.

Chapter 9 literally explains itself - "Working On Your Business, Not In It."

Chapters 10 to 18 (Part III) show how to develop the systems that will out you in control of your business, instead of the other way around.

After reading The E-Myth Revisited, you will understand the difference between being self-employed and being a full-fledged business owner who leads others and manages systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - Much Needed!
Gerber addresses how to make your business work for you instead of you working for your business. I desperately needed this change from thinking I have to do it all to learning to set up my business so it can run without me.I believe I am like most small business owners-I know my market and my product but hate the bookkeeping aspects. I have my own business--I get to choose which 20 hours a day I want to work. Gerber explain the typical mentality of a small business owner and how to change your thinking and avoid the common pitfalls. I found it eye-opening.

The previous review that wrote he only read the first part (then tore it apart on a partial reading) should have read the whole book. The first part presents the problems and the second the solutions.

4-0 out of 5 stars It helped me to take control of my business!
I found it really useful. I have a Real Estate Business and have 2 employees. We all are sellers and I was a sort of Sales Manager, seller, director...
It was frustrating not having a record of the clients who called to the office in order to follow up their requirements, not to mension the fact of not knowing other seller's client's requirements and having several sheets of paper with data of the houses we were trying to sell in several desks in the office.
After doing something about the mess we had, starting to follow a system and given specific tasks and formats to fill now we are organized to work and a much better follow up of our clients.
The following step is to establish a broader system in order to be able to let the business running by itself, a business not requiring me stay here all day long. And, now after reading the book, I know how to do it.
The only thing I didn't think is right in this book is that Gerber assumes that a seller may follow a system, not necessarily caring about the feelings of clients, and yet be a good seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight to the point on what it takes to make it.
I have been involved with a network marketing company for a little over a year but basically had no direction. Sometimes what your upline tells you to do feels so unnatural but I knew their had to be another way. This book is it. I keep buying books on sales but this was the one specifically geared to what I have to do to succeed: network. What he says makes so much common sense. He gets you ready mentally ( don't worry even this is more reallistic than a lot of the dribble I have come accross on programming the sub-conscience(important, but we'll do that later show me how to make some $$$) then we get to work. It covers all aspects of the business and those I didn't think of.Very eye-opening thinking out of the box-type excellent book. I have been more active in the days of reading this book than I have in almost nine months. Whenever I feel a slump, distracted discouraged I pick up this book. Get this and Make Your First Million in Network Marketing by Mary Christensen. Although the title sounds a bit corny it is extremely extremely practical no-hype strait-forward advice (like I said the title bites). Also Selling Among the Wolves w/o Joining the Pack is the best book on selling period. These 3 books are the foundations of my business library & take common sense no bull approach and I appreciate them for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has become my network marketing Bible.
As a somewhat successful network marketer I read this book looking for insights for myself and those in my "downline."I immediately bought 20 more copies and sent them out to those seeking success innetworking. It is easy to understand and is backed by the credibility ofsomeone who can lead by experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author successfully practices what he preaches.
I have read the book twice and implemmented many of the stated priciples into my own business with a highly satisfactory degree of success.Butwin is an authentic and intuitive coach in network marketing... but most of allduplicable! Having been the recipient of his wisdom for three years, I haveput into practice his methods both from studying the book and observing theway he practices what he preaches. For anyone considering a new career inNWM, or anyone wanting to kick their present business upward to the nextlevel of success, this industry classic is a must. ... Read more
