    Editorial Review

With its long and rich history, the United Kingdom boasts a remarkable wealth of styles in its period interiors. Escorting us not only through extraordinary spaces but through time as well, this volume leads us on a photographic tour of dozens of stately homes, from the late medieval splendor of Rufford Old Hall in Lancashire through the glittering rooms of Polesden Lacey, home of early 20th-century socialite Mrs. Greville, with stops at many splendid Elizabethan, 17th- and 18th-century, and Victorian residences. Unfortunately, the quality of the photography is uneven; many of the photos are good but a number of them do not sparkle as they should; some are underlit and murky and some include distracting glare from the windows. The serious student of architectural interior history may be somewhat dismayed at the book's organization: the format tries to echo the movement through a house, so that rather than a house-by-house survey we begin with halls, staircases, and long galleries, then proceed to living rooms, eating rooms, bedrooms, and finally rooms for contemplation (i.e., private chapels, libraries, print rooms). However, a vague attempt at a chronological progression of photographs within each chapter does hint at a progression of styles, and casual readers wanting to peek inside some unique and often luxuriant residences will find their curiosity rewarded. --Amy Handy ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Did not like the book.
This book has nothing common with the classical English style if you are looking for it. It has dark, gloomy and boring room photographs. But, it has a useful information in the introduction part as it explains the history and challenges in English decoration style from early periods until now.

2-0 out of 5 stars don't judge this book by its cover
I, too, thought this book would be the penultimate guide to English style. That would only be true however, if one believes English style to be unrelentingly grim, grim, grim. All the photographs (and there were fewer than one might have wished) were of dark interiors and unwelcoming, depressing rooms.Maybe Chippy Irvine could have just explored her husband Keith's work. This book does not represent English style at all, to my mind, despite its misleading cover.Glad I didn't pay full price for it.

This is a good book, and you will like it if you favor English style. Some pictures are average, but I liked it. Very cool pictures of bathrooms though! ... Read more

On the other hand, Philip Johnson was an active fascist sympathizer and active propagandist for the Nazi government, who had tried to implement fascism in USA for at least 8 years between 1932 and 1940.Details of this past are described in "WE CANNOT NOT KNOW HISTORY:" PHILIP JOHNSON'S POLITICS AND CYNICAL SURVIVAL by KAZYS VARNELIS in Journal of Architectural Education, November 1994 published also on the Internet, and also discussed at http://arch.designcommunity.com/viewtopic.php?t=3709.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good supplement on modern architecture in Southern CA.
This book made me aware of how visions of residential space has changed over the decades (such as the fact that family homes were often equipped with only two bedrooms). I enjoyed having the addresses on these homeslisted in this paperback also -- now I can take an architectural tour on myown. More importantly, I learned the legacy of Arts & Architecture, thenow defunct magazine that made the Case Study project possible. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Important Lessons In architecture
In an age when pretentious architects with cynical and destructive design ideaologies (Eisenman, Libeskind, Morphosis, etc.)are wrongly celebrated as heroes or role models, Mockbee provided a quiet but valuable alternative. While the others focussed on generating controversy and notoriety, Mockbee pursued an architecture of beauty and moral purpose. His social and civil lesson is an important one to any young architecture seeking serious direction.

4-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book, but slightly lacking
I have been an admirer of the work of the Rural Studio from the start and couldn't wait to get this book... The photos are beautiful and touching, but the book is lacking in drawings (i.e. plans) and text.I was hoping for more about the thoughts and processes that students put into the designs, the role of Sam Mockbee in it all, and some architectural drawings that would more comprehensively showcase the projects

    2-0 out of 5 stars overrated butt-kissing
This book includes too much butt-kissing and paternalism. Sure, Mockbee and his students are helping these people, but they seem a bit too proud of themselves. I wish there was more technical information about the designs, materials, and techniques. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!
I have owned this book for over a year and always thought it was an excellent book but wasn't inspired to write a review until just recently, when I received a new book I purchased called "Caribbean Style".This book, "Caribbean Elegance", is everything that the other book is not. I love this book! The photography is incredible, encompasing everything from the smallest furniture detail or accessory, to entire historical exteriors & interiors, and exquisite scenery!
The text gives a detailed history of the settlers and islands, really giving you an understanding of how the various styles of West Indies architecture and furnishings came into being. It also distingushes the furnishings by their various European influences, such as Spanish, English or Dutch, among others. As an interior designer I found this book fascinating and educational. But even for someone who just has a love of the islands, the photography alone is worth the price of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Caribbean Elegance
This book was exactly what I was searching for.Not only is it visually stunning, but it provides a wealth of historical information on Caribbean style and furnishing.A wonderful resource if you want to understand how this very unique style of interior design came to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical Realism
Reading this book is like being invited to an elegant house party in the Caribbean. You then enter a world of magical realism, in which you sit in the veranda of an 18th century "Great House" with beautiful ocean views, and your pick of antique "planters' chairs," with cool drinks waiting on a "cupping table."You listen to tales of planters and merchants, of sugar cane fields and slaves turned artisans. The material culture of the Caribbean is presented here, seen through the lens of historical events, the experiences of the wealthy and those who served them. You learn wonderful details about the subtle differences of styles on the Spanish, Dutch, English, French and Danish islands. The photographs are beautiful and range from vistas to architecture to furniture and their details. It is also a very scholarly work, of interest to anyone who loves antiques, craftsmanship, history and the Caribbean.
This book is truly an experience you can come back to again and again, and discover something new (or old...). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking Garden Splendor
This book displays the manicured gardens of the privileged and the magnificent natural beauty of simple country farm houses. It also includes outstanding photographs of titan trees and lush tropical vegetation. However, a special quality of this book is that it captures the careful planning of home and garden in Colombia. Some of the gardens in "Gardens of Colombia" are very old and offer wonderful views of mature walkways, paths and streams. My favorite pages are those that show unique Colombian courtyard gardens. In short, this Villegas editores publication is a paradise of garden landscapes and a perfect coffee table book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes me home sick!!!!!
I just move to the usa andbecause I wanted to have something that reminds me of home with the decoration of my apartment I had to buy it I saw the book in a furniture store in Antigua Guatemala days before I left but I couldt buy it!!
I decided to search and I found it, I am so happy

5-0 out of 5 stars Courtyards & architecture at a wonderful price
We bought 2 of these books in Guatemala and paid almost twice Amazon's price! Bummer but we loved the book. Pictures are awsome and when we got home everyone wanted our books to keep so I was so pleased to find it on Amazon and at a bargain price.

Not only is it a wonderful collage of home styles and decorating ideas with professional quality photos but the history of the architecture is a very interesting read as well.I'd call this one of the best books we ever purchased. If you are interested in Guatemala and/or Central American architecture, I think you'll love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pase adelante a la Casa Guatemalteca
For a Guatemalan like myself, it is a thrill to have a book like this in order to show people some of the best our country has to offer in the way of art, architecture, use of space and color and textiles.I am sorry Amazon does not make this book available. However, it is found in both English and Spanish in Guatemala.Anybody going down there should pick it up.I picked one up during my last trip as a gift for my mother-in-law, a tenured ASID Interior Designer in San Jose, California (she was very thrilled!). My only 'complaint' is that they did not show more houses outside of the Antigua/Guatemala City circuit, e.g. Quetzaltenango, the great estates in Escuintla, etc.In fact, it is a bit too Antigua focused, which in that case it should have been called "Casa Antigua". However, do not let this detract from acquring this wonderful book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars capturing the essence ....
I bought this book in Havana whilst on a brief visit just recently.

Having visited some of the places in the book, such as the wonderful building used as the cover shot; stayed in a hotel onThe Malecon; stayed in one of the private grand old homes in Vedado; stayed for a few days in Trinidad; Cienfuegos; Valle de los Ingenios - can truly say that this book, by its wonderful photography, has captured the true essence of what is Cuba today - a beautiful island caught in a past era distinguished by its architecture, granduer of vision and the human senses of style and vibrant sense of life - all in glorious decay today but still captiviting and enthralling. It is heartening that some of the buildings are being restored to their former grandeur and will be there for following generations to see and enjoy.

The country is rendered even more attractive by its people, who everyday cope with trying to live without the basics that the rest of the world takes for granted and, still maintain a great sense of life, optimism, gentleness of spirit and pride in their beautiful country. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, interesting ideas
This is a great book for those of us with only a small space to garden. The book is broken up into different themes for your courtyard garden, such as latin courtyard, morrocan courtyard, contemporary courtyard, french courtyard, medieval courtyard, etc. Each style of courtyard has about two pages of information, then a plant list of appropriate plants and a sketch of a possible layout for that type of courtyard with specific locations of plants, benches, water features, etc. The book is very inspirational with lots of helpful photos and sketches to get every level of gardener excited and ready to get started.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Design Source
This book is full of beautiful courtyard photos and ideas. Nearly every topic is covered...architectures from classic to japanese, themes from tropical to xeriscape, hardscapes, water features, lighting, statuary and furniture. Each courtyard design includes a landscape sketch and suggested plants list. I bought this book to find ideas for the gardens of my Arts and Crafts home...and there was indeed a plan for it! The final chapter has an extensive and well organized list of plants suitable for the courtyard garden. Even if you don't have a courtyard garden to escape to...Musgrave's book will take you there through its beautiful photos and descriptive text. ... Read more

Were all the reviews written by the author? Give me a break! The fact that every review sounds the same will keep me from ever purchasing this book. In that case, I guess all the reviews helped!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Book on Courtyards.
Courtyards is a terrific book, the result of 20+ years of loving research. Oregon Professor John Reynolds is crazy for courtyards and it certainly shows.
A courtyard is a space surrounded by a building, often surrounded by a house. There are all manner of courtyards, large, small, huge, quiet, loud. Some are open and others are terribly private. But all good courtyards have things in common. In the landscapes most of us in the US are used to, we have a house and the gardens are on the outside and we see them before we see the house. In a sense these landscapes serve mostly as dressing to enhance the outward look of the house. But a fine courtyard garden is different. It is smack in the middle of the house and the house surrounds it. It is not wide open to the world, but instead is a place to get away from it all, a place to be outside, but not to be out in the open. The best courtyards are open to the sky, have water, vines, a multitude of interesting flowers, trees, potted plants. A large number of the very finest courtyard plants are discussed in detail in this excellent book. I was struck by how interesting the numerous photos and designs were. Profusely illustrated, each one serves a definitive purpose. I was struck too, by how many different things go into the making of a well thought out courtyard. What is involved so that it will be warm in the winter and cool in the hot summer. What is involved so that it becomes a place where people want to be. I took many notes as I read this large book and some day I plan to build a house of my own design, and in the middle of it, I'm going to have a courtyard. And in this courtyard, I'll have all the things needed, the ingredients so carefully detailed here, that make the right courtyard a magical place. I'd recommend this book for anyone who ever plans to build their own home, for all landscape designers, for all architects, for anyone with a serious interest in horticulture and design. An excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for courtyard designer
Courtyards book is filling a gap in architectural book market where much is focused on nice pictures and minimal designs. Few technical books that gets published receive little attention. But this book will attract the designer as well as the technician.
All technical aspects are simlply stated and science and aesthetics of the courtyards are very well covered with nice drawings and beautiful photos. The guidelines that summarize the long research are very clear, creating a pattern language for courtyard design.

Being an architect from Turkey, I have been interested with courtyards and did some research. This book is doing much groundwork for those who will design a residentialcourtyard. But the guidelines would also apply to commercial atriums.

Too bad that housing today is understood as single family housing in American Style Villas or public housing as high rise apartment buildings. This book proves that with the correct guidelines very nice and dense housing is possible.

√Ět inspired me to do some courtyard housing design. I am sure it will be one of the most used buildings of my library. ... Read more
