The Normal Christian Life by Watchman Nee Average Customer Review: Mass Market Paperback (01 June, 1977) list price: $5.99 -- our price: $5.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (14)
First, let me clarify---I am *not* a Christian. Second, let me say that I have read equally non-Christian historians decribe "Romans" as one of the all-time classics of human literature---one of those books that, regardless of your belief, will change you, and broaden your perspective on the life you live. Why? Because it is the most incisive anti-religion treatise you will ever read. What, and this book is in the Bible??? Anyone familiar with my reviews will know that I admire true individuals. Watchman Nee was one of these. Despite the fact that he's a favorite among many Christian believers (even those who tend toward fundamental Christianity), I seriously doubt many of these would agree with some of Nee's most fundamental tenants. He was considered somewhat of a "problem" by other missionaries in China at the time (1920s-1930s). It's no accident that Angus Kinear's biography of Nee is titled "Against The Tide." As a simple example, Nee strongly believed in "the local church." By this, he meant that each individual congregation not only had the right but was *obligated* to establish their own set of doctrinal beliefs. He was solidly anti-institutional religion. He also had a unique view of what consituted human nature (most clearly outlined in "The Spiritual Man" [three volumes]). This view, I believe, was far more consistent with healthy psychology than what most American Christian churches currently preach. In "The Normal Christian Life," Nee takes on the Apostle Paul at his finest. I'll avoid saying much about the contents, as it's a complicated and detailed study. I'll simply relate one of my favorite chapters. It's Nee's commentary on Paul's exposition on "The Law" of Moses. This actually constitutes several books of the Old Testament, but it can partially be reduced to what most of us know as "The Ten Commandments." Are these rules that we're expected to follow? No, says Nee. The whole point, he says, is this---you can't do this! There is no way that anyone who has ever lived could do it. The person who says they can understands *nothing* about true religion. Nee uses a very Christian language in his discussion of this issue. If you're not able to "translate" that into your own world view, then Nee is unlikely to do anything for you. If you're a Christian, you *MUST* read this book. If you're *not* a Christian, it would be nice if you could. In any event, this one is a classic. ... Read more Isbn: 0842347100 |

Wild at Heart: Discovering the Secret of a Man's Soul by John Eldredge Average Customer Review: Hardcover (03 April, 2001) list price: $21.99 -- our price: $14.95 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If Christian men are going to change from a pitiful, wimpy bunch of "really nice guys" to men who are made in the image of God, they must reexamine their preconceptions about who God is and recover their true "wild" hearts, writes bestselling author John Eldredge in Wild at Heart: Discovering a Life of Passion, Freedom, and Adventure. Eldredge throws down the gauntlet--men are bored; they fear risk, they refuse to pay attention to their deepest desires. He challenges Christian men to return to authentic masculinity without resorting to a "macho man" mentality. Men often seek validation in venues such as work, or in the conquest of women, Eldredge observes. He urges men to take time out and come to grips with the "secret longings" of their hearts. Although the book succeeds best in its slant toward a male audience, it also strives to help women understand the implications of authentic masculinity in their relationships with men. Eldredge frames the book around his outdoor experiences and appealing anecdotes about his family, sprinkling the text with touches of humor and overlying everything with heartfelt passion. Even as he mixes eclectic ideas about masculinity from popular movies such as Braveheart with classic words from Oswald Chambers, and lyrics from the Dixie Chicks with stories from the Bible, he points to only one answer for men searching for their true wildness of heart. Writes Eldredge, "The only way to live in this adventure ... with all its danger and unpredictability and immensely high stakes ... is in an ongoing, intimate relationship with God." --Cindy Crosby ... Sit Walk Stand by Watchman Nee Average Customer Review: Mass Market Paperback (01 June, 1977) list price: $4.99 -- our price: $4.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (8)
In "Sit, Walk, Stand," Nee tackles the book of Ephesians discussing the Christian's placement in Christ. First, he notes how a Christian must start his journey with Christ by sitting--resting alongside the Savior who has done all the work. And because Christ has done all the work, the Christian is given the peace of knowing there is nothing he or she can add. Walking comes from being seated as the Christian merely lives out the Christian life by claiming his place seated alongside Christ. Our ministry comes via the finished work. And lastly, in standing, the Christian holds the territory Christ has taken from Satan by calling on the name of Jesus and living out Christ's triumph. As with all Nee works, the outright simplicity and wisdom of his writing cuts to the soul and spirit. For those who struggle in their Christian journey, the author's words come as a joyful balm since he shows how we can stop trying to do it all by ourselves and let Christ rule. With so much packed into such a short book, this is a fantastic resource for anyone who wants to find peace in Christ while living out a more vital existence. A must read and truly worthy of five stars.

Grace Walk by Steve McVey Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 February, 1995) list price: $9.99 -- our price: $9.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (18)
Among the excellent points covered include: 1.God's view of success differs from the world's view. While God's grace is the dominant theme in this book, the author does not excuse liberty at the expense of being a positive witness. Read and be encouraged to let God be your life instead of you trying to live the Christian life. There is a difference! ... Read more Isbn: 1565073215 |

A Testament of Devotion by Thomas R. Kelly Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 September, 1996) list price: $13.95 -- our price: $11.16 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (7)
I found this encouraging--that a life filled with God's presence does not have to take decades to find.Rather, it can begin to be experienced little by little day to day and in a relatively brief time, moment by moment as Kelly describes. This is a great book.Kelly is not pretentious in any way.He plainly and simply gives clues of how to live a Christ-filled life in today's busy society.
I once gave it as a graduation gift to a seminary student. She later commented that there were lots of things she agreed with. What?! There is no agrument or proposition here! You let it take you, lead you places. You immerse, wrap yourself in its beauty. The 1941 edition with an intro/bio by Douglas Steere (also reprinted in 70s or 80s) is MUCH MUCH preferred to the Richard Foster edition. He not only adds his own intro, but does editing of the original. Blasphemy. Skip his "version" and find an original.

The Journey of Desire: Searching for the Life We Only Dreamed of by John Eldredge Average Customer Review: Hardcover (08 March, 2000) list price: $19.99 -- our price: $13.59 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Christian lecturer and counselor John Eldredge follows up his bestselling Sacred Romance with The Journey of Desire: Searching for the Life We Always Dreamed Of, a book whose very title evokes hope and possibility. The first half of Journey of Desire argues that Christians have forsaken their heart's desire due to the failures and sorrows of life. This is tragic, Eldredge insists, because "absolutely nothing of human greatness is ever accomplished without it." A rousing call to search for the life you've only dreamed of ensues. The question naturally arises as to the "wayward" desire that lies within us, and how it is to be controlled let alone differentiated from our true desires. While the answer isn't clear, the second half of the book focuses on what Christians have to look forward to in heaven--what they are to set their hope upon. Each chapter begins with insightful literary quotes and aptly applied modern song lyrics pertaining to the upcoming text. While the contents could fuel many a theological debate, Eldredge does inspire one to consider what lies in the recesses of his heart, and for Christians hopefully it is a primarily desire for God alone. --Jill Heatherly ... Among the important points Solomon covers are: 1.Our identity is based on who we are in Christ. After reading the book I was further convinced of the futility of trying to live life in my own strength. Some people may believe this attitude breeds passivity.Quite the contrary, there is nothing more difficult for the Christian than the daily struggle of dying to self by living in Christ. Read the book, be challenged, and be encouraged! We need not live futile lives!

Streams of Living Water: Celebrating the Great Traditions of Christian Faith by Richard J. Foster Average Customer Review: Hardcover (September, 1998) list price: $20.00 -- our price: $13.60 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Streams of Living Water is Richard J. Foster's roundup of six great traditions of Christian spiritual practice. His essays on spirituality--contemplative, holiness, charismatic, social justice, evangelical, and incarnational--are grounded in straightforward profiles of biblical and modern characters whom Foster considers exemplars of these traditions. (The prophet Amos and the Quaker abolitionist John Woolman, for example, are featured in the chapter on social justice.) Each chapter ends with a bit of advice about how readers can cultivate new aspects of spiritual life and keep these Christian traditions alive: "Take a bath instead of a shower. Waste time for God," Foster writes, in his chapter on the contemplative tradition. Foster doesn't really break new ground in Streams of Living Water--he's written about most of these spiritual disciplines elsewhere--but this book is a useful and engaging introduction to a fairly broad range of Christian spiritual practices. --Michael Joseph Gross ... Read more Reviews (16)
Foster uses modern and historical/mythical persons to flesh out the strengths he ascribes to each branch of protestantism. While this approach will test readers who look down on the stories of the saints of old (he relates St. Francis' reasoning with a wild wolf in one chapter) if you can put aside modern protestant prejudices against christian mythology you'll be much the better for it. I found the book to be a refreshing approach to integrating the major movements in Christianity.I am more mindful of the traditions of faith I did not grow up in and am attempting to incorporate their strenghts into my experience of Jesus Christ.
PROBLEMS:There was nothing wrong with the examples Foster selected, but they didn't grab me as much as other Renovare books have.Perhaps I'd rather read each person's own words than read about that person's life. Also, the binding on my book broke.I don't know if that is a problem or just happened to me. POSITIVES:For me, the joy of this book was in the appendix and extra material.Foster gives us one appendix of critical turning points in church history and another of notable figures and significant movements in church history. He begins each chapter with a chart from the time of Jesus to present that lists significant people, movements, and dates related to that tradition. CONCLUSION:The extra material is easily worth the cost of the book. The chapters are just the added bonus on this one.I've returned to these charts for reference time and time again. ... Oswald Chambers: Abandoned to God: The Life Story of the Author of My Utmost for His Highest by David McCasland Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 April, 1999) list price: $14.99 -- our price: $14.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (6)
When I began to read what I thought would simply be a pleasantly uplifting and inspiring life story of a man I already admired, I did not imagine how much McCasland's biography would enrich my appreciation of Chambers' words and life. The book is quite well written, and was most certainly enjoyable, but it provided far more enriching rewards. The details of Chambers' life and thinking that McCasland's work painted became a context which greatly deepens the significance of Chambers' writing - especially My Utmost for His Highest.Provided with Chambers' background, upbrinning, struggles, failings, loves, sacrifices, ambitions, convictions, conversations, correspondences and more, his own writing has led me to even deeper appreciation and understanding of the walk of a faithful servant of Christ.I am still astounded that he died at my own age - how could such a young man come to know the Lord and the yoke of service so well in such a short time?!I am grateful that McCasland went on to relate the story of Biddy, Oswald's widow, and her incredible faithfulness to the work that Oswald was unable to continue. I have already purchased and given away several copies of Abandoned to God, and will continue to recommend and share it.McCasland has done more than simply told the story of a man, he has revealed and shared a noble life with us.In summation, I must say that this book has become my favorite biography, and has probably made more difference in my life than any other I have read.Thank you, David McCasland!

My Utmost for His Highest: An Updated Edition in Today's Language by Oswald Chambers, James Reimann Average Customer Review: Hardcover (01 July, 1992) list price: $14.99 -- our price: $10.19 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Oswald Chambers, a Scotsman who converted to Christianity in his teens under the ministry of Charles Spurgeon, has been affecting Christians with his devotional words since My Utmost for His Highest was first published in 1935. This acknowledged classic contains 365 daily readings that take heady doctrine and make it practical, realistic, and intensely personal. With humor and humility, Chambers speaks plainly to the common man struggling with devotion to Christ in daily living. Worldly cares and self-serving desires begin to lose their appeal as Chambers aides the reader in transforming his mind by viewing life through the instruction of God's Word. Richard Halverson, former chaplain of the United States Senate, attests to this: "no book except the Bible has influenced my walk with Christ at such deep maturing levels." This is Chambers's chief desire, directing the reader to "shut out every other consideration and keep yourself before God for this one thing only--My Utmost for His Highest... determined to be absolutely and entirely for Him and for Him alone." --Jill Heatherly ... WHATS SO AMAZING ABOUT GRACE by Philip Yancey Average Customer Review: Hardcover (10 October, 1997) list price: $19.99 -- our price: $13.59 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Mention the word "grace" and what immediately comes to mind for most of us is a bagpipe wailing the solemn notes of "Amazing Grace." The grace of which Philip Yancey writes is the freely given and unmerited favor and love of God. This grace seems a remote, almost sentimental concept, without a place in our lives or our society. It is a vague, slippery thing to us, probably because we seem to experience grace so rarely and have managed to leech the word of meaning. But Philip Yancey has set about to rescue grace in his book What's So Amazing About Grace? This grace is the true message of Jesus. All faiths have virtues and creeds and justice and truth, but Jesus speaks merely of receiving the love that God has for us. Accepting it, not earning it or making ourselves worthy of it. And frankly, accepting something we have not earned or are not worthy of is not an easy thing for most of us. In truth, grace is both utterly simple and utterly confounding. Little by little, Yancey guides us into a clearer understanding of grace by using stories, in much the same way Jesus did. We read stories of both grace and ungrace at work in people's lives. Sadly, it is stories of ungrace that are more prevalent today, the current culture wars painful acknowledgments of ungrace in our lives as Christians in this country. Yancey helps us understand that ungrace is that state of being in which self-righteousness and pride are a result of thinking that we have somehow earned God's approval and may now stand in judgment in his behalf. Philip Yancey was awarded the Gold Medallion Christian Book of the Year award for this book in 1998 by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. Readers concurred with this decision, making this book an immediate bestseller. Believers and nonbelievers alike should accept Yancey's challenge to become agents of grace rather than agents of vengeance or judgment or anger. In truth, we are each starving for grace, ready to grasp it tightly. And it is through grace that all other hungers--for justice, for righteousness, for love--are satisfied. Yancey opens his book by telling us that "grace" is the last best word, and in What's So Amazing About Grace?, he proves that he's right. --Patricia Klein ... Read more Reviews (146)

Decision Making And the Will of God : A Biblical Alternative To The Traditional View by Garry Friesen, J. Robin Maxson Average Customer Review: Paperback (22 July, 1999) list price: $6.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (28)
A number of reviewers have said that the book teaches that God doesn't have a plan for your life. He does ... but he's not about to tell you what it is! You *can* discover God's plan for your life, but only afterwards! It is wonderful to look back and see God's hand. [I don't think what I am saying here detracts from what the authors are saying.] This is an important book, but it is rather tedious to read. I think that the same material could have been presented in 200 pages, without leaving out any of the important points being made. It is a great book to have read! I recommend the book, with the above proviso. Another excellent book on Guidance is Jensen and Payne: Guidance and the Voice of God. The authors of both books are in substantial agreement.
