5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book
If you have never read anything by Watchman Nee, you are in for a treat.I would highly recommend all of his books. This is one of those classic books that all Christians should read.Warning:It will challenge you.Depending on your level of spiritual maturity, you may often find yourself questioning if you have ever been saved.Of course, this is certainly a healthy thing to examine every now and then (2 Cor. 13:5).

If you have never read any of Watchman Nee's books before, I would start out with this book, "Sit, Walk, Stand", and "Let Us Pray".These books are certainly full of depth, and they will be good for understanding some of his even deeper writings down the road.

If you are already familiar with Watchman Nee's writings and you haven't read this book, put this on your must-read list right away. You won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This is the best Christian book I've ever read aside from the Bible. If you only ever buy one book, buy the Bible. But if you only buy two books in your lifetime make the second one "The Normal Christian Life" it will change your life.Take it slowly and pray as you read it; it will revolutionize the way you see yourself, the cross, the blood of Jesus, and your status before God.I've read a lot of Christian books, I don't think any of them come close to this. You will be changed.Pray about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Once Again, The Question Of What Is *Normal*?
Have you ever heard of Watchman Nee? He was a Chinese national, and the penultimate Christian missionary. He was finally arrested by the Communists when they came to power in China, and he spent the last two decades of his life in a small, barren prison cell. Almost all of his books are transcriptions of his sermons. This one is a series which studies Paul's letter to the "Romans."

First, let me clarify---I am *not* a Christian. Second, let me say that I have read equally non-Christian historians decribe "Romans" as one of the all-time classics of human literature---one of those books that, regardless of your belief, will change you, and broaden your perspective on the life you live. Why? Because it is the most incisive anti-religion treatise you will ever read. What, and this book is in the Bible???

Anyone familiar with my reviews will know that I admire true individuals. Watchman Nee was one of these. Despite the fact that he's a favorite among many Christian believers (even those who tend toward fundamental Christianity), I seriously doubt many of these would agree with some of Nee's most fundamental tenants. He was considered somewhat of a "problem" by other missionaries in China at the time (1920s-1930s). It's no accident that Angus Kinear's biography of Nee is titled "Against The Tide." As a simple example, Nee strongly believed in "the local church." By this, he meant that each individual congregation not only had the right but was *obligated* to establish their own set of doctrinal beliefs. He was solidly anti-institutional religion. He also had a unique view of what consituted human nature (most clearly outlined in "The Spiritual Man" [three volumes]). This view, I believe, was far more consistent with healthy psychology than what most American Christian churches currently preach.

In "The Normal Christian Life," Nee takes on the Apostle Paul at his finest. I'll avoid saying much about the contents, as it's a complicated and detailed study. I'll simply relate one of my favorite chapters. It's Nee's commentary on Paul's exposition on "The Law" of Moses. This actually constitutes several books of the Old Testament, but it can partially be reduced to what most of us know as "The Ten Commandments." Are these rules that we're expected to follow? No, says Nee. The whole point, he says, is this---you can't do this! There is no way that anyone who has ever lived could do it. The person who says they can understands *nothing* about true religion.

Nee uses a very Christian language in his discussion of this issue. If you're not able to "translate" that into your own world view, then Nee is unlikely to do anything for you. If you're a Christian, you *MUST* read this book. If you're *not* a Christian, it would be nice if you could. In any event, this one is a classic. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

If Christian men are going to change from a pitiful, wimpy bunch of "really nice guys" to men who are made in the image of God, they must reexamine their preconceptions about who God is and recover their true "wild" hearts, writes bestselling author John Eldredge in Wild at Heart: Discovering a Life of Passion, Freedom, and Adventure. Eldredge throws down the gauntlet--men are bored; they fear risk, they refuse to pay attention to their deepest desires. He challenges Christian men to return to authentic masculinity without resorting to a "macho man" mentality. Men often seek validation in venues such as work, or in the conquest of women, Eldredge observes. He urges men to take time out and come to grips with the "secret longings" of their hearts. Although the book succeeds best in its slant toward a male audience, it also strives to help women understand the implications of authentic masculinity in their relationships with men. Eldredge frames the book around his outdoor experiences and appealing anecdotes about his family, sprinkling the text with touches of humor and overlying everything with heartfelt passion. Even as he mixes eclectic ideas about masculinity from popular movies such as Braveheart with classic words from Oswald Chambers, and lyrics from the Dixie Chicks with stories from the Bible, he points to only one answer for men searching for their true wildness of heart. Writes Eldredge, "The only way to live in this adventure ... with all its danger and unpredictability and immensely high stakes ... is in an ongoing, intimate relationship with God." --Cindy Crosby ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It connected to my heart
John uses what he knows, which is hiking, fishing, canoeing, and manly movies to describe his point.

I have always loved the outdoors, climbing a 14K foot peak is far more spiritual than attending your average worship service, that is for sure. I love many of the same things that John does, and I have been trained to be a warrior in a foxhole. So when John talks about being in the "Wild" or having a "warrior's heart", I get it. If you have been locked up in the prison of civilization all your life, (which is how I understand it) you may not appreciate it. I am a father of two boys, and just teaching them about the outdoors is a challenge. If, on the otherhand, you have dreams of floating through the Grand Canyon or climbing that mountain, this book will connect with your heart.
Some critics have called this book an attempt to get us back to our caveman roots, but when you don't connect, you cannot see the vision. It is about living out God's adventure for our lives, it is about taking up His battle, making His battle our own. In this area, I believe that John has hit a crucial nerve with so many men that have been afraid of becoming passionate about anything, much less being passionate for Christ. That is where John is trying to lead us, into a passionate existence where God is our guide, and we pursue Him passionately. If you follow John's next book, "Waking the Dead" you see this being further fleshed out. Many in the Christian church are stone dead in their faith. They produce little or no fruit and they see church as an obligation, instead of a place where passionate followers of God gather. I have been that man. Eldridge helped me understand that having a warriors heart, where the only thing that matters is God, is not only ok, but what God is searching for.

Having helped lead a group of a dozen men through this book, I can honestly say that about half the guys get it, half don't.
It you connect to it, it is 5 stars. If you aren't a lover of the great outdoors, you may just get angry because you don't even understand why someone would even bother to take a long hike in the mountains in order to get at some fish with a fly-rod.

If you like to be comfortable in the air conditioned atmosphere, this book won't suit you. As for me, even though I live in a large city, my passion is for the wild.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highest Recommendation
Captivating, challenging, and life-changing--I am glad I read this book. Over the last 18 months, I have purchased and given away more than 20 copies. This I feel is the strongest testimony I can give, as the Bible is the only book I have shared more abundantly. The first two people I shared this book with were skeptical. However, both made a quick read of it and have distributed multiple copies to their family and friends. If you find value in the works of Stu Weber and Patrick Morley-I believe you will find value here. If your picture of Christ has ever been anemic and namby-pamby, I believe you need to read this. If you live 8 hours a day in a cubicle, please read this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Being a "guy" is not only OK, it's actually GOOD!
I discovered this book with a group of friends, all of whom wanted to get to know themselves and each other better. One of Eldredge's main points is that society has taken the idea of masculinity and made it something it's not.He urges his readers to discover their true manly strengths, and to use them responsibly.Too many men today are just "going through the motions" and not really living, and Eldredge wants to change that.

Through a systematic and experiential approach, the reader is invited to look inward to discover areas where he has been hurt and, consequently, where his masculinity has been hurt.Eldredge calls this "the wound," and focuses a good bit of attention on identifying, acknowledging and healing it as an essential step to regaining one's masculine spirit.

If you are tired of being expected to be nothing more than a "really nice guy," this book is for you. There is more to life as a man than just being nice, although that is certainly a part of it.However, there are times when being nice isn't necessarily the best course of action, and Eldredge's work aims to help readers distinguish between the two. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars So simple, so profound
Watchman Nee has been inspiring Christians all over the world for many decades. His Asian worldview informs his Christianity in such a way that he brings a completely different understanding that is refreshing to Western readers able to follow what he writes.

In "Sit, Walk, Stand," Nee tackles the book of Ephesians discussing the Christian's placement in Christ. First, he notes how a Christian must start his journey with Christ by sitting--resting alongside the Savior who has done all the work. And because Christ has done all the work, the Christian is given the peace of knowing there is nothing he or she can add. Walking comes from being seated as the Christian merely lives out the Christian life by claiming his place seated alongside Christ. Our ministry comes via the finished work. And lastly, in standing, the Christian holds the territory Christ has taken from Satan by calling on the name of Jesus and living out Christ's triumph.

As with all Nee works, the outright simplicity and wisdom of his writing cuts to the soul and spirit. For those who struggle in their Christian journey, the author's words come as a joyful balm since he shows how we can stop trying to do it all by ourselves and let Christ rule.

With so much packed into such a short book, this is a fantastic resource for anyone who wants to find peace in Christ while living out a more vital existence. A must read and truly worthy of five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deceptively Simple; Unbelievably Profound
A hidden gem.Within fewer than 80 pages, Nee lays out in simple terms some of the most profound truths of the Christian life from the book of Ephesians. It will inspire and challenge both new and mature believer alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Necessity for Studying Ephesians
Wow, this book really opened my eyes to not only understanding the book of Ephesians, but in understanding our relationship with Jesus and practicality of walking with our Lord. It's more than worth the purchase and the read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The book that started my transformation....
...into the Christian that I am today!

Gracewalk was an incredible read the first time through. I read it at a time when I was ready to give up on being a good Christian.

I had resigned myself to thinking that I would never be able to be all that God wanted me to be. But through God's amazing positioning of my life events, I found the message that He wanted me to see in Grace Walk.

Since then, I've read the book at least two more times, and it remains one of my favorites. It was also instrumental in the writing of my first book, Christ Through Me (see my profile).

Steve McVey does a good job explaining how He came from the point of being totally beaten at trying to live the Christian life by His own power, and to the wonderful experience of letting Jesus live His life through Him!

You can tell that Mr. McVey has a firm grasp on this concept and presents many wonderful illustrations and Biblical references so as to remove this truth from the realm of personal opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soooo life changing!!!!
This is one of the best books I have ever read! God bless Steve McVey!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Encouragement to Live By Grace Instead of Rules.
McVey has written an excellent book challenging the Christian to live in the power of God's grace instead of fleshly self-sufficiency.

Among the excellent points covered include:

1.God's view of success differs from the world's view.
2.Definition of the flesh. Before God will work in and through us, we must stop relying on fleshly self-confidence.
3.The futility of trying to live the Christian life in fleshy self-effort.
4.Our relationship with Jesus Christ is based on grace, not rules and regulations.Church activity without Jesus is powerless.
5.The exchanged life vs. the flesh life and promises God gives us for victorious living.
6.Reasons to live based on a relationship with Jesus instead of Christian values.
7.Evangelism based on grace is the overflow of a joyous relationship with Jesus Christ.
8.Grace is characterized by calm confidence in God's sovereignty, timing, and methods.

While God's grace is the dominant theme in this book, the author does not excuse liberty at the expense of being a positive witness.

Read and be encouraged to let God be your life instead of you trying to live the Christian life. There is a difference! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Devotion
As I read this book, I thought, "This man had a lifetime of learning to live, think, breath and walk in the presence of God."However, at the end of the book, in the biographical section, I learned that Kelly really only began to live the life he describes the last few years of his life.It was not that it took him that long to achieve such spiritual levels, but rather, he apparently was busy with life and never tried.

I found this encouraging--that a life filled with God's presence does not have to take decades to find.Rather, it can begin to be experienced little by little day to day and in a relatively brief time, moment by moment as Kelly describes.

This is a great book.Kelly is not pretentious in any way.He plainly and simply gives clues of how to live a Christ-filled life in today's busy society.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thing of Beauty
Call it a "classic" if you like, but to me, this book is a thing of beauty. There are few books that compare to it.

I once gave it as a graduation gift to a seminary student. She later commented that there were lots of things she agreed with. What?! There is no agrument or proposition here! You let it take you, lead you places. You immerse, wrap yourself in its beauty.

The 1941 edition with an intro/bio by Douglas Steere (also reprinted in 70s or 80s) is MUCH MUCH preferred to the Richard Foster edition. He not only adds his own intro, but does editing of the original. Blasphemy. Skip his "version" and find an original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a quiet time of reflection.
Thomas Kelly helps awaken our longing for a life lived in God's presence. He beckons us away from the distractions and sensual bombarments of popular culture, and points us a simple place of abiding faith. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Christian lecturer and counselor John Eldredge follows up his bestselling Sacred Romance with The Journey of Desire: Searching for the Life We Always Dreamed Of, a book whose very title evokes hope and possibility. The first half of Journey of Desire argues that Christians have forsaken their heart's desire due to the failures and sorrows of life. This is tragic, Eldredge insists, because "absolutely nothing of human greatness is ever accomplished without it." A rousing call to search for the life you've only dreamed of ensues. The question naturally arises as to the "wayward" desire that lies within us, and how it is to be controlled let alone differentiated from our true desires. While the answer isn't clear, the second half of the book focuses on what Christians have to look forward to in heaven--what they are to set their hope upon. Each chapter begins with insightful literary quotes and aptly applied modern song lyrics pertaining to the upcoming text. While the contents could fuel many a theological debate, Eldredge does inspire one to consider what lies in the recesses of his heart, and for Christians hopefully it is a primarily desire for God alone. --Jill Heatherly ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I love John Eldredge writing but ...
This one had me going for half the book and then I just couldnt keep up with where he was going. In the early going I loved the book as I have with most of his books. I understand the spiritual context and the place desire holds but halfway through I found it redundant and lost the focus of the message. Maybe its me but this one didnt make it like his others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Permanently Refocused
From someone who loves to read....this book is at the top of my list.I have re-read this one multiple times.I love the fact that Eldredge writes with such a deep background knowledge of scripture, thegreat theologians, authors, and spiritual giants of our past, as I have read many of their works. He is also intimately aware of societies current passions and what it is people are actually searching for.On a personal level his life has been touched with both beauty and pain.I appreciate that his biography includes the traditional and non-traditional as well as much time spent in quietness and study of the scriptures. His counseling experiences are rich.He just knows people!!Eldredge so eloquently weaves all of this together in a "cut to the chase" style that reinforces the human desire to love and be loved perfectly. The reason I am permanently refocused is because John brings to light all that has been kept hidden in Sunday School and Church.Reading this book is a mountain-top experience all right! But the difference...I'm not coming down. There is so much more about ourselves and God than we have been told!!!To the man who passionately waits and the woman who diligently seeks...you won't be disappointed!!AMEN

5-0 out of 5 stars In the tradition of C.S. Lewis
St. Augustine once said of God, "We are meant for thee, and our hearts are ever restless until they meet their rest in thee." John Elderdge has done an astonishingly good book on finding the true desire of the heart, that elusive call of "Joy" which C.S. Lewis so ably spoke about.
From the opening words of his parable of the Sea Lion, which is worth the entire book, he guides the reader through that desire which is in the hearts of those who belong to Christ, and directs them to the One for whom that desire points.
As Elderdge points out, the problem most Christians have is not that their desires are too strong, but they are too weak. We mess around with things that don't amount to a hill of beans, while infinite joy is offered us.
It is well worth reading, and an eye-opener. It should awaken even the most lethargic soul. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Awesome book about our Identity in Christ!
    Wow!

Bill Gillham is a wonderful author. And this book dives right in to the fundamental truth that we have to know and understand in order to live the successful Christian life:

Our identity in Christ and what it means to us as believers.

The first half of the book deals with a lot of psychology and was very valueable in learning what my own "flesh pattern" was. This book was instrumental in the writing of my first book, 'Christ Through Me' (see my profile).

Definitely a must read, this book was well worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifetime Guarantee
This book is not for everyone. I have tried to "force" it on others and have found that it just doesn't resonate with them. If God has you at a point that you can't do the Christian Life anymore this book will teach you how to live it through the indwelling power of Jesus Christ. I found I was living a lot of my Christian life through my own power (flesh). It looked Christian, it felt Christian but still was a false power that came from my own strength. I knew it was when I got burned out. Gal. 2:20 says it well "It's no longer I who live but Christ within me." Learning how to let Christ live through you is what this book is all about. The first half is a lot of terminology that is foundational. The last part is very practical giving you real ways to see changes. This book and the Exchanged Life seminars really did change my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars It chenged the way I view myself.
A must read for every Christian.
This book changed my life. I been recomending it to all my friends. It is so good.
It made me realize, the Bible is the perfect pisocology. This book helped me undertand the book of Romans and finally understood what walking by the flesh and walking by the Spirit means.
Thank you so much Mr. Bill Gillham, I can see you were inspired by the Holy Spirit to write this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Live in the Strength of the Lord Instead of Your Own!
I read Handbook to Happiness during seminary and was very appreciative of Dr. Solomon's biblical advice to stop trying to live the Christian life in your own strength and instead let the Lord live His life through you.

Among the important points Solomon covers are:

1.Our identity is based on who we are in Christ.
2.Definitions of the soul, spirit, and body.
3.Acceptance is based on who we are in Christ, not our work for Him.
4.Until our flesh dies to Christ, we will live futile lives.Yielding to Christ is hard work!
5.Excellent notes on coming to the end of ourselves.
6.Excellent notes on our times in a spiritual wilderness.
7.Before we can be elevated by God we must experience the agony and suffering of the cross.
8.Many Christians try to live the Christian life in their own strength.

After reading the book I was further convinced of the futility of trying to live life in my own strength. Some people may believe this attitude breeds passivity.Quite the contrary, there is nothing more difficult for the Christian than the daily struggle of dying to self by living in Christ.

Read the book, be challenged, and be encouraged! We need not live futile lives!

5-0 out of 5 stars Now you can find happiness as intended by God.
This book is for everyone who is asking the question, "Is it possible to find true happiness?" This is a book on basics. We all have access to the Bible, the Word of God and the Holy Spirit as our counselors.(page13). Romans 12:2, it is the mind that needs to change. Dr. Solomon shareshis life. Many of us can identify with the ups and downs of depression. Godreminds me that "My ways are not your ways, my thoughts are not yourthoughts." Dr. Solomon answers many questions on how to address ourfeelings. What is rejection and its results, page 18? What is the cure forrejection, page 20? Who are you? On what do you base your identity, page20+? When the joy dissapears, why? What should I do or what didn't I do,page 64? My responsibility is to study and look to Christ. Hisresponsibility is to reveal the life of the Lord Jesus in me, page 80.Nothing man has will lead to happiness, so why not follow the way of God?"You shall know the Truth and the Truth will set you free." Editorial Review

Streams of Living Water is Richard J. Foster's roundup of six great traditions of Christian spiritual practice. His essays on spirituality--contemplative, holiness, charismatic, social justice, evangelical, and incarnational--are grounded in straightforward profiles of biblical and modern characters whom Foster considers exemplars of these traditions. (The prophet Amos and the Quaker abolitionist John Woolman, for example, are featured in the chapter on social justice.) Each chapter ends with a bit of advice about how readers can cultivate new aspects of spiritual life and keep these Christian traditions alive: "Take a bath instead of a shower. Waste time for God," Foster writes, in his chapter on the contemplative tradition. Foster doesn't really break new ground in Streams of Living Water--he's written about most of these spiritual disciplines elsewhere--but this book is a useful and engaging introduction to a fairly broad range of Christian spiritual practices. --Michael Joseph Gross ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent
The more I read of Richard Foster, the more I like his style. As is always the case in his books, Foster's Streams of Living Water presents a well categorized methodical approach to understanding the Christian faith. In this case, he focuses on what he calls the "Traditions" of the faith.

Other reviews have detailed the Traditions of which Foster speaks. So, I'll comment on the structure of the chapters, which, in my opinion, is excellent. Each chapter gives multiple examples of people who focused on the Tradition for that chapter. One of these people is contemporary (Billy Graham is one), one is historical (St. Augustine of Hippo), and one is Biblical (Amos, for example). After using examples to give you a feel for the Tradition in question, Foster lays out what he considers to be the essentials of the Tradition, its defining characteristics. He then moves to a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the Tradition, and closes the chapter with a discussion of how we can integrate it into our lives.

It's clear from reading the book that it is designed with an ecumenical understanding.Foster sees each modern expression of Christianity as presenting a part of the life of wholeness we are to live.Through people reading this book (and joining Renovare groups and such), Foster hopes to encourage Christians to live a balanced life. This book is certainly a good step in that direction.

If you want to live a full Christian life, this book will help guide you on your way.

A final note:I love the first Appendix in this book.It is a brief outline of some Church history, along with certain contributions that each branch of Christianity has given us (from Catholic to Orthodox to the various Protestants), that we can apply in our lives, regardless which of these groups we belong to.

On the whole, this is simply and excellent book.I pray that each one who reads it moves to apply it in their own walk.

5-0 out of 5 stars An attempt to reintegrate the Christian faith
Foster's "Streams" is a radical idea in contemporary Christian circles - drawing together the strengths in each of the recognized major protestant Christian sects he asserts a new, more whole view of life with God.

Foster uses modern and historical/mythical persons to flesh out the strengths he ascribes to each branch of protestantism. While this approach will test readers who look down on the stories of the saints of old (he relates St. Francis' reasoning with a wild wolf in one chapter) if you can put aside modern protestant prejudices against christian mythology you'll be much the better for it.

I found the book to be a refreshing approach to integrating the major movements in Christianity.I am more mindful of the traditions of faith I did not grow up in and am attempting to incorporate their strenghts into my experience of Jesus Christ.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another in the Series
PLOT:Like some other Renovare' books, this one deals with 6 traditions of Christianity: contemplative, holiness, charismatic, social justice, evangelical, and incarnational. For each tradition (stream) Foster introduces us to Christians from Scripture, history, and modern times who serve as examples of that stream.

PROBLEMS:There was nothing wrong with the examples Foster selected, but they didn't grab me as much as other Renovare books have.Perhaps I'd rather read each person's own words than read about that person's life. Also, the binding on my book broke.I don't know if that is a problem or just happened to me.

POSITIVES:For me, the joy of this book was in the appendix and extra material.Foster gives us one appendix of critical turning points in church history and another of notable figures and significant movements in church history. He begins each chapter with a chart from the time of Jesus to present that lists significant people, movements, and dates related to that tradition.

CONCLUSION:The extra material is easily worth the cost of the book. The chapters are just the added bonus on this one.I've returned to these charts for reference time and time again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
I simply could not put this book down! Its amazing. It really allows you to get to know Oswald so well. I found in the book many similarities between myself and Oswald. Oswald Chambers was a beautiful humble and unselfish man. In the back of the book are many of his poems too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A worthy read, a noble life
After reading Chambers' word daily for the previous three years, I had already been changed by the man's insights into the God's Word and the disciple's walk.As Richard Halverson (former Chaplain of the United States Senate) said of My Utmost forHis Highest, "No book except the Bible has influenced my walk with Christ at such deep and maturing levels."

When I began to read what I thought would simply be a pleasantly uplifting and inspiring life story of a man I already admired, I did not imagine how much McCasland's biography would enrich my appreciation of Chambers' words and life. The book is quite well written, and was most certainly enjoyable, but it provided far more enriching rewards. The details of Chambers' life and thinking that McCasland's work painted became a context which greatly deepens the significance of Chambers' writing - especially My Utmost for His Highest.Provided with Chambers' background, upbrinning, struggles, failings, loves, sacrifices, ambitions, convictions, conversations, correspondences and more, his own writing has led me to even deeper appreciation and understanding of the walk of a faithful servant of Christ.I am still astounded that he died at my own age - how could such a young man come to know the Lord and the yoke of service so well in such a short time?!I am grateful that McCasland went on to relate the story of Biddy, Oswald's widow, and her incredible faithfulness to the work that Oswald was unable to continue.

I have already purchased and given away several copies of Abandoned to God, and will continue to recommend and share it.McCasland has done more than simply told the story of a man, he has revealed and shared a noble life with us.In summation, I must say that this book has become my favorite biography, and has probably made more difference in my life than any other I have read.Thank you, David McCasland!

5-0 out of 5 stars life changing
As a reader of Oswald Chambers work, I was anxious to read more about the man. This book was life-changing, spiritually challenging and inspiring. Although an "easy" read in many respects, it's content was not easy to digest.I found it thought provoking and a time of self-examination.It's difficult to identify any current day lives so devoted not to "what God does, but who God is", as Oswald Chambers refers to early in the book. It's a book one would recommend without hesitancy. ... Editorial Review

Oswald Chambers, a Scotsman who converted to Christianity in his teens under the ministry of Charles Spurgeon, has been affecting Christians with his devotional words since My Utmost for His Highest was first published in 1935. This acknowledged classic contains 365 daily readings that take heady doctrine and make it practical, realistic, and intensely personal. With humor and humility, Chambers speaks plainly to the common man struggling with devotion to Christ in daily living. Worldly cares and self-serving desires begin to lose their appeal as Chambers aides the reader in transforming his mind by viewing life through the instruction of God's Word. Richard Halverson, former chaplain of the United States Senate, attests to this: "no book except the Bible has influenced my walk with Christ at such deep maturing levels." This is Chambers's chief desire, directing the reader to "shut out every other consideration and keep yourself before God for this one thing only--My Utmost for His Highest... determined to be absolutely and entirely for Him and for Him alone." --Jill Heatherly ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Study the bible daily by reading one page per day
I've never found a book so thrilling by the depth of a single pages' topic each day as it relates to the bible. One does not have to reference the bible by learning from this work every day of your life, if time does not permit.

You can also use the bible references for each day to study that part of the bible in more detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars profound insights and guidance
I find there is no better way to start the day than with the wisdom in this magnificent devotional; these profound thoughts were given by Oswald Chambers while at the Bible Training College in England, during the years of 1911 through 1914, and after his death in 1917 (while serving in Egypt during World War I) were edited by his wife, and later updated into modern English by James Reimann, who says in his introduction that the book is the "culmination of approximately 1800 hours of research and editing", and the end result are words that flow and feed and sometimes pierce the soul with remarkable accuracy, to remind one of the way Jesus intended us to live. This book, in conjunction with the Bible (Reimann recommends one to read this with one hand and the Bible in the other) are guideposts for a meaningful life.

Not a "God loves you and all is well" type of book, there are many passages of tough love, that keep one on the right track, and I often have the experience of it answering a question that is on my mind. Each day under the header, is a relevant Bible quote, and underneath Chambers' teaching on the subject, in the 250 word range in length. There are various editions to chose from, and mine is a small leather-bound volume using the NKJV for its Bible quotes, with a foreword by Charles Stanley, who as Reimann's pastor, was the one who recommended the original Chambers work to him.
The back of the book has two useful sections, a Subject Index, and a Scripture Index.
As the end of the year approaches, I'm looking forward to reading this on a daily basis for the second time, and every year thereafter; its teachings are invaluable, and I believe this is a truly inspired work, that will guide and nurture all who read its truth.

4-0 out of 5 stars INTERCESSION
The copy I have, I received as a gift from my church, and actually I had been wanting one of my own.I used it religiously every day for a couple of years, day by day, along with my daily bible readings. This devotional certainly helps keep one focussed on things that really matter to God, things spiritual, eternal. The entry that really spoke to me the most was the one of March 31, a day significant to me in that it was the day my great grandmother Molly Hamilton Summers died. She was, to me, the epitome of true christian virtues. No one can even think of anything bad to say about her.She never cursed, never said bad things about anyone, never manipulated, never deceived. She is still a legend in our family which is a little strange because she didn't really do anything spectacular or significant in worldy terms. She died a decade and a half before I was born.I actually bought that copy from the christian bookstore that I was browsing in so moved by what I'd read.

Funny how the Spirit works, I guess at the time I was feeling judged, incompetent in my prayer life, and in my day to day walk with Christ. That entry has the heading Heedfulness vs. Hypocrisy in Ourselves, the verse from the bible, I John 5:16.Oswald Chambers writes "If we are not heedful of the way the Spirit of God works in us, we will become spiritual hypocrites...He reveals things so that we may take the burden of these souls before Him and form the mind of Christ about them...It is...that we rouse ourselves until God is able to convey His mind to us about the one for whom we intercede."Important stuff, because if we cannot do that we're not really reflecting the crucified Christ who died for all sin and for all time, and maybe one is not born of the Spirit of God if we cannot pray that way.

Oswald Chambers died of appendicitis in 1917 in Egypt serving Australian and New Zealand troops during WWI.And as his widow notes in a short foreword in my copy, these entries were compiled from various lectures and talks he gave several years before he died. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hiding Place
"The Hiding Place" by Corrie Ten Boom illustrates the life of a Christian family who risks their lives to help others and the importance of giving your burdens to God. A simple Christian household of the Ten Booms soon becomes a Hiding place for Jews during the time of the Nazis in World War Two.The family is unfortunately caught and sent to prison, separated and all alone. How could this be Gods will? The lord uses Corrie and her sister Betsie to teach other prisoners about his love. Then God gave the girls three visions, the story triumphantly changes as the discouraged and tired Corrie brings those visions to life. This story is a must read for any Christian or discouraged heart. The Hiding Place will have you counting your blessings and strengthening your walk with God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring True Story - Faith Building
Inspiring true story of a simple Christian family who placed their trust in God and changed the world as a result. They not only protected Jews during WWII, they worked for reconciliation of Jews and Nazis after the war, even to their own abusers.Only God make that sort of thing happen, and for the many years since, Corrie Ten Boom has been preaching that God.Read only if you want your faith in God deepened.

5-0 out of 5 stars G-d is our true Hiding Place
As a grandson of Holocaust survivors and the great-grandson of Holocaust victims, as one who attended only Jewish schools until college, I grew up reading books about the Holocaust. Yet it wasn't until I read Rabbi Daniel Lapin's book, America's Real War, that I had ever heard of Corrie ten Boom and her righteous family. Referring to The Hiding Place and Tante (Aunt) Corrie's other book, In My Father's House, Rabbi Lapin writes: "I personally see it as a mark of shame for the Jewish community that these books are not mandatory reading in every Jewish high school." That's all I needed to read, as I shortly thereafter purchased both of these books, the first of which, The Hiding Place, I finished last week.I am indebted to Rabbi Lapin for the recommendation.

This heartwrenching story of a Dutch Christian family responsible for saving Jewish lives during the Holocaust is one of courage, heroism and faith. But the Ten Boom family's commitment and love for the Jewish people is firmly rooted decades prior to these events as Tante Corrie (1892-1983) elsewhere writes of the regular prayer meetings her grandfather would make for the sake of the Jewish people in the Beje (the family home and watchmaker shop) beginning in the 1840's. Tante Corrie explains: "In a divine way that is beyond our understanding, G-d answered those prayers. It was in the same house, exactly one hundred years later, that Grandfather's son, my father, and four of his grandchildren and one great-grandson were arrested for helping save the lives of Jews during the German occupation of Holland."

We read of Tante Corrie's childhood and the righteous home in which she was reared wherein the reader gets some glimpse into her saintly father, the family patriarch Caspar ten Boom. As Hitler takes over Holland and anti-Semitic regulations become commonplace, Tante Corrie resolves in her heart: "Lord Jesus, I offer myself for Your people. In any way. Any place. Any time." That Tante Corrie and her family most certainly did, becoming part of the Underground and harboring Jews in the specially constructed "hiding place" in the Beje. The "hiding place" takes on a deeper symbolism in keeping with Tante Corrie's conviction that the One Above must become our ultimate refuge in life.

I will never forget some of these Jews, like Cantor Meyer Mossel, known as Eusie. I laughed out loud at his interactions and well received "Psalm 166" joke with Father ten Boom. "Father beamed. Of course there is no Psalm 166; the Psalter stops with 150. It must be a joke, and nothing could please Father better than a scriptural joke." Eusie was quite a character.

Tragically, the Ten Boom's operation of saving Jewish lives was discovered by the Nazis and Tante Corrie and her unusually righteous sister Betsie were sent to concentration camps. Tante Corrie survived to dedicate her next four decades of life to sharing her life changing story of triumph through faith. Somewhat disturbing to me, however, is Tante Corrie's attitude of forgiveness toward her evil captors and her sister Betsie's consistent prayers for them. However, this has less to do with Tante Corrie personally as it has to do with the fundamental differences between Judaism and Christianity in their understandings of forgiveness in general. As Dennis Prager has written in an essay appearing in The Sunflower, "More than a decade of weekly dialogue with Christians and intimate conversations with Christian friends have convinced me that, aside from the divinity of Jesus, the greatest-- and even more important -- difference between Judaism and Christianity, or perhaps between most Christians and Jews, is their understanding of forgiveness and, ultimately, how to react to evil."

Tante Corrie, now in Heaven, thank you for everything you did for my people. We love and cherish you.

    WHATS SO AMAZING ABOUT GRACE

    Editorial Review

Mention the word "grace" and what immediately comes to mind for most of us is a bagpipe wailing the solemn notes of "Amazing Grace."

The grace of which Philip Yancey writes is the freely given and unmerited favor and love of God. This grace seems a remote, almost sentimental concept, without a place in our lives or our society. It is a vague, slippery thing to us, probably because we seem to experience grace so rarely and have managed to leech the word of meaning. But Philip Yancey has set about to rescue grace in his book What's So Amazing About Grace?

This grace is the true message of Jesus. All faiths have virtues and creeds and justice and truth, but Jesus speaks merely of receiving the love that God has for us. Accepting it, not earning it or making ourselves worthy of it. And frankly, accepting something we have not earned or are not worthy of is not an easy thing for most of us.

In truth, grace is both utterly simple and utterly confounding. Little by little, Yancey guides us into a clearer understanding of grace by using stories, in much the same way Jesus did. We read stories of both grace and ungrace at work in people's lives. Sadly, it is stories of ungrace that are more prevalent today, the current culture wars painful acknowledgments of ungrace in our lives as Christians in this country. Yancey helps us understand that ungrace is that state of being in which self-righteousness and pride are a result of thinking that we have somehow earned God's approval and may now stand in judgment in his behalf.

Philip Yancey was awarded the Gold Medallion Christian Book of the Year award for this book in 1998 by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. Readers concurred with this decision, making this book an immediate bestseller. Believers and nonbelievers alike should accept Yancey's challenge to become agents of grace rather than agents of vengeance or judgment or anger. In truth, we are each starving for grace, ready to grasp it tightly. And it is through grace that all other hungers--for justice, for righteousness, for love--are satisfied. Yancey opens his book by telling us that "grace" is the last best word, and in What's So Amazing About Grace?, he proves that he's right. --Patricia Klein ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A gifted word master
Pick up any of the Yancey books and you will be drawn into his genuineness, personal vulnerability, and facility with words. In this book, Yancey takes the sometimes ethereal concept of divine Grace, and puts a human face on it, in fact many human faces. He makes it easy to imagine that I can access this grace, partake of it, and even become a conduit for it.Even if you do not agree with all of Yancey's theology, you will find yourself strangely drawn to his writings. He is the quitessential human being in a quest for God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing
This was the second Philip Yancey book that I read (after The Jesus I Never Knew), and it is, by far, his greatest work. I have read this book almost a dozen times. The book explores the subject of grace in an example-driven, practical way that only Philip Yancey could write sucessfully. In response to criticism because of its controversy, I only have to say that the Bible is a very controversial book as well.

This is truly one of the greatest books I have ever read. I highly recommend this book for everyone who wants to learn more about God's amazing grace.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I've read in years?
For some unknown reason, I resisted Yancey's work for years.I'd see it on the shelf and go blechh!!!, having never read a word he wrote. Finally in desperation for something to read, I picked this up.

Later that night after a reading binge, I put the book down, finshed in one sitting. Ever since I've been haunted by one sentance. "There's nothing we can do to make God love us more, and there's nothing we can do to make God love us less.In that one sentence, Yancey hits the paradox of grace.

As people of faith we are caught between the demands of law and the gift of grace. As one reads scripture, it almost seems as if the biblical writers still had not resolved the balance for themselves.Yancey tries to negotiate the balance between the Jesus who offers himself in unconditional relationship with us and the same Jesus who says I didn't come to eliminate one line of the law. Yancey does this largely through stories that make grace seem really accessible and really costly.

If you were to buy one book for someone who wanted to know what it meant to be a Christian in the 21st century, grab this one and give it to them.I've already gone through 5 copies. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars all you need to know about this book
Finishing this book was a lesson in patience. Don't bother with this waste of paper, there are many other fine writers of christian leaning--g.k.chesterton and t.s.eliot come to mind--who can write without egregious fallacies.
First, RavZac asserts that his book counters the 'steady barrage of scholarly attack' which 'has been foisted upon religion' in general, and on christianity in particular (p xiv). Paradoxically, he then goes on to quote Kant's assurance(as representative of modern antitheistic thought)(p9) that spirituality is not threatened by Kant's antitheistic philosophies, and also acknowledges that modern thought has been a natural evolution of human history (p6). Second, RavZac continually correlates societal ills with modern intellectualism (p xiv,xvii,8,12,et al), and actually asserts causality between the two (p xvii,8,22-33). Then, he states that 'every generation raises the issue of life's essence' and discusses the long history of humanity's existential angst. If dissatisfaction with life is universal in all times and places, and if the history of humanity is the history of pleasure as well as pain, then where does RavZac get off when he tries to pin it all on modern intellectualism and philosophy? Finally, he states 'that all philosophizing on life's purpose is ultimately two conclusions, Does God exist? and What is his character?'(p8) He may hold such a view, however he seems to be ignoring a vast record of philosophy that does not presuppose a theistic view, let alone the monotheistic variant. RavZac is atrociously unrigorous in his sophomoric attempt at conversing with the great philosophers. The foregoing should show that one needn't get very far into his book before being stumbled at his profusion of ineptitude. The entire writing has so borrowed pseudo-biblical language as to be cloying, and RavZac thoroughly conveys his paranoid rhetoric by overutilizing key words such as 'warned, aberrant, terrifying, unbridled, unleashed, attacks, machinations, trickery', etc. ad nauseum.
In short, this book is the religious version of political paranoia as discussed in Richard Hofstadter's THE PARANOID STYLE IN AMERICAN POLITICS, 11/64.There are no redeeming features of this writing, save for giving the lucid reader abundant opportunities to identify logical fallacies and monitoring the addled ramblings of today's christian writers.

3-0 out of 5 stars There are certainly people who can live without God.
While believing in God can surely be beneficial to man and can make the person healthier as well as provide much improvement in other areas as well, there are still atheists who had and have lives as perfectly fine human beings. Take for instance Bertrand
Russell, the philosopher and mathematician who was an atheist. He led an exemporally life without having to be involved in God. And he was a compassionate man wo cared deeply about human suffering and human decency. A lot of times, people need there to be a God because humans had previously hurt them so. This is not always the case but many times it certainly is. By the way, I myself believe in God , that is, a supernatural entity which created life, but other then that, I think "HE" minds his own business. Keep in mind, there is probably a huge amount of life
forms in the universe. I wonder what their thoughts are about God? If they have thoughts, that is. Who knows?

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book.
As an ill-educated person (I have little more than a public high school education), I admittedly am ignorant in the area of Philosophy. It is for this reason I am very glad Ravi Zacharias did not write this book so only the pedants and PhD's could understand it. It is an intensively interesting book and a pleasure to read. ... A number of reviewers have said that the book teaches that God doesn't have a plan for your life. He does ... but he's not about to tell you what it is! You *can* discover God's plan for your life, but only afterwards! It is wonderful to look back and see God's hand. [I don't think what I am saying here detracts from what the authors are saying.]

This is an important book, but it is rather tedious to read. I think that the same material could have been presented in 200 pages, without leaving out any of the important points being made. It is a great book to have read!

I recommend the book, with the above proviso.

Another excellent book on Guidance is Jensen and Payne: Guidance and the Voice of God. The authors of both books are in substantial agreement.

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth comes out-- what a relief!
This book cuts through a lot of culturally developed [information] about the "will of God". It makes such a difference to have what scripture says-- not just a lot of cultural or traditional hot air-- on the subject.
Friesen's straightforward, to the point writing is right on the mark, and is really quite liberating (it is for freedom He set us free...).
Another wonderful book on the same subject is by Gerald Sittser, "The Will of God as a Way of Life" (what a wonderful title). Sittser has essentially the same perspective, but his book is less academic/apologetic in style, and is more like reading the great inspirational works of Philip Yancey or others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Decision Making and the Will of God
This book is nothing less than life changing. His basic thesis is that God does not have a unique life plan for each believer that must be discovered in order to make correct decisions.Friesen attacks the notion that the key to life is to wait on the Lord and notes that doing so often results in lost opportuntites and even immature decisions. He believes that God gave man free will as well as responsibility for his decisions and that the key to making good decisions is simply determining whether they are consistent with God's commandments.Every Southern Baptist should be required to read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing
This is a must read for all Christians. It is Biblically sound and will change the way you live. Instead of having to try to perform all the time, we must learn to have faith and let God take over. Ignore the one bad review, the reviewer missed the boat on what Hannah Smith was saying.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Christian Classic
Smith has written a classic that will continue to bless long after her passing. The book is divided into three main parts:

1.The Life (how to enter into the Christ life).
2.Difficulties concerning:faith, the will, guidance, doubts, temptation, failures).
3.Results of the Christ-life (growth, service, joy of obedience, practical results in everyday life, etc.).

Written by a Quaker, the book will encourage Christians of all denominations.Read, enjoy, and be encouraged in the Lord.

    Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very encouraging book
I highly recommend this book. I read it while stationed in Iraq and it encouraged me very much in that situation. It is thoroughly orthodox in its theology and praxis and has nothing to do with modern "psycho-babble" as one other reviewer mistakenly suggested. The book was written over 100 years ago. If it was written today the author most likely would use the term "joyful life" in the title rather than "happy life", but it's clear that her meaning is a happiness that comes from the Lord and is not based on circumstances (which nowadays we would probably call "joy"). Mrs. Smith's secrets to the happy/joyful Christian life are: surrendering all to the Lord, trusting implicitly in the Lord, and immediate obedience to Him. Hard to be more orthodox than that. She gives many anecdotal stories to help the reader understand how much God loves us and how surrender, trust, and obedience result in our abiding more deeply in Christ and consequently having joy in all circumstances. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Murray Review
Amazing book.It amplifies the call to eternal peace, the "rest for our souls" we all desire. His style is used to make one hear the Scripture and fall at the feet of God for rest. The problem with the text from the first few days is it could lean, out of context, to perfectionism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Desiring Holiness?
Classic work of Andrew Murray who understood the heart of God. If you desire to live a holy life, but don't understand how, this is the book for you. Christ said, "My yoke is easy and my burden is light." If that is not your experience, this book reveals the secret.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Abide
I love this book.I pick it up every couple of years, and it continues to bless me richly with every read.Andrew Murray simplifies the teachings of Jesus down into three words:"Abide in me."If a believer will simply strive to abide in Christ, all the other benefits will result.Joy overflowing, fruitful ministry, answered prayer, etc. This book is an all time classic with great depth and simplicity in its theology.Buy it and a copy for all your close friends. They don't write them like this anymore. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughts on "Changed into His Likeness"
A truly brilliant and spirit led exposition of not only the story, but also the relevance and importance of the phases in a christian's life according to the lives of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. This book gave me peaceabout the lack of peace in my life, and God's way of working with me. Adefinite must if you're struggling with God and struggling to overcomelife's fears.

5-0 out of 5 stars foundational to understanding Abraham, Isaac and Jacob
No other work in former or recent times has so excellently expounded withunderstanding these founding fathers. As Yhwh has stated, "I am thegod of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and my seed shall be in their descent. Not Abraham alone, as the Muslims would desire for us to accept, but inAbraham, Isaac and Jacob, as in their seed is the seed of Christ. Recommended A1! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is like coming home after a long absence!
After three decades of devotional reading, I found 72 of my favorite authors in this gem of a devotional book, plus dozens of others, particularly out of the Brethren tradition. It could certainly be argued that Christian thought today is "a mile wide and an inch deep,"butthis book goes blessedly deeper than much of today's "devotionalwriting." Sincere thanks to Mr. Harrison and to Zondervan! (...) ... Read more
