Harry Potter 2004 Wall Calendar: Heroic Moments Average Customer Review: Calendar (01 July, 2003) list price: $12.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (3)
The picture selections are well chosen, though not as good as last year's calendar. The one's that raises bemused eyebrows is the large picture of the mountain troll with Harry's wand stuck up its right nostril.Nice to see that for 31 days, that. It's the quotes from the movies written on parchment-coloured rectangles that sink it.They work if the dialogue's toe-tinglingly triumphant or something apt that fits the scene. The potion book's explaining the Polyjuice Potion, shown aside Hermione's preparation of it, great.Oliver Wood's simple "Watch it Harry" in the picture where Harry's chased by the Rogue Bludger, okay. But Harry accusing Lucius Malfoy of precipitating the events of the story over a picture of Dobby being freed doesn't work.A simple "Dobby is free!" would've been better.Another observation:none of the instructors show up-it's mostly Harry, Ron, and Hermione. And no, there isn't a special page with stickers like there were on the 2003 wall calendar. That'll probably come with the 2005 calendar for The Prisoner of Azkaban.Reviewus terminatus.
While this calendar lacks the centerfold of stickers that previous calendars have included, I felt this calendar was a must-have nonetheless for the Harry Potter fan.Its composition is ingenious, the colors are brilliant, and the photographs are the best quality to date. ... Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5) by J. K. Rowling, Mary GrandPré Average Customer Review: Hardcover (21 June, 2003) list price: $29.99 -- our price: $19.79 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review As his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry approaches, 15-year-old Harry Potter is in full-blown adolescence, complete with regular outbursts of rage, a nearly debilitating crush, and the blooming of a powerful sense of rebellion. It's been yet another infuriating and boring summer with the despicable Dursleys, this time with minimal contact from our hero's non-Muggle friends from school. Harry is feeling especially edgy at the lack of news from the magic world, wondering when the freshly revived evil Lord Voldemort will strike. Returning to Hogwarts will be a relief... or will it? The fifth book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series follows the darkest year yet for our young wizard, who finds himself knocked down a peg or three after the events of last year. Somehow, over the summer, gossip (usually traced back to the magic world's newspaper, the Daily Prophet) has turned Harry's tragic and heroic encounter with Voldemort at the Triwizard Tournament into an excuse to ridicule and discount the teen. Even Professor Dumbledore, headmaster of the school, has come under scrutiny by the Ministry of Magic, which refuses to officially acknowledge the terrifying truth that Voldemort is back. Enter a particularly loathsome new character: the toadlike and simpering ("hem, hem") Dolores Umbridge, senior undersecretary to the Minister of Magic, who takes over the vacant position of Defense Against Dark Arts teacher--and in no time manages to become the High Inquisitor of Hogwarts, as well. Life isn't getting any easier for Harry Potter. With an overwhelming course load as the fifth years prepare for their Ordinary Wizarding Levels examinations (O.W.Ls), devastating changes in the Gryffindor Quidditch team lineup, vivid dreams about long hallways and closed doors, and increasing pain in his lightning-shaped scar, Harry's resilience is sorely tested. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, more than any of the four previous novels in the series, is a coming-of-age story. Harry faces the thorny transition into adulthood, when adult heroes are revealed to be fallible, and matters that seemedblack-and-white suddenly come out in shades of gray. Gone is the wide-eyed innocent, the whiz kid of Sorcerer's Stone. Here we have an adolescent who's sometimes sullen, often confused (especially about girls), and always self-questioning. Confronting death again, as well as a startling prophecy, Harry ends his year at Hogwarts exhausted and pensive. Readers, on the other hand, will be energized as they enter yet again the long waiting period for the next title in the marvelous, magical series. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter ... Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Full Screen Edition) Director: Chris Columbus Average Customer Review: DVD (08 February, 2005) list price: $19.97 -- our price: $15.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review First sequels are the true test of an enduring movie franchise, andHarry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets passes with flying colors.Expanding upon the lavish sets, special effects, and grand adventure of HarryPotter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry's second year at Hogwarts School ofWitchcraft and Wizardry involves a darker, more malevolent tale (parents withyounger children beware), beginning with the petrified bodies of severalHogwarts students and magical clues leading Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron(Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) to a 50-year-old mystery in themonster-laden Chamber of Secrets. House elves, squealing mandrakes, giantspiders, and venomous serpents populate this loyal adaptation (by Sorcerer'sStone director Chris Columbus and screenwriter Steve Kloves), and KennethBranagh delightfully tops the supreme supporting cast as the vaingloriouscharlatan Gilderoy Lockhart (be sure to view past the credits for a visualpunchline at Lockhart's expense). At 161 minutes, the film suffers from lack ofdepth and uneven pacing, and John Williams' score mostly reprises establishedthemes. The young, fast-growing cast offers ample compensation, however, as doesthe late Richard Harris in his final screen appearance as Professor AlbusDumbledore. Brimming with cleverness, wonderment, and big-budget splendor,Chamber honors the legacy of J.K. Rowling's novels. --Jeff Shannon ... Read more Features Reviews (690)

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Full Screen Edition) Director: Chris Columbus Average Customer Review: DVD (08 February, 2005) list price: $19.97 -- our price: $15.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Here's an event movie that holds up to being an event. This filmed version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, adapted from the wildly popular book by J.K. Rowling, stunningly brings to life Harry Potter's world of Hogwarts, the school for young witches and wizards. The greatest strength of the film comes from its faithfulness to the novel, and this new cinematic world is filled with all the details of Rowling's imagination, thanks to exuberant sets, elaborate costumes, clever makeup and visual effects, and a crème de la crème cast, including Maggie Smith, Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, and more. Especially fine is the interplay between Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and his schoolmates Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson), as well as his protector, the looming Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane). The second-half adventure--involving the titular sorcerer's stone--doesn't translate perfectly from page to screen, ultimately because of the film's fidelity to the novel; this is a case of making a movie for the book's fans, as opposed to a transcending film. Writer Steve Kloves and director Chris Columbus keep the spooks in check, making this a true family film, and with its resourceful hero wide-eyed and ready, one can't wait for Harry's return. Harry Potter Wizard Chess Average Customer Review: Toy US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If Harry's enough of a wizard to hook millions of kids on reading, maybe he's enough of a wizard to make them crazy about chess too. This Potterized set is very nearly very nice. Although the game pieces are plastic, they have interesting (if not very Hogwarts-specific) designs with good detail, and they're a decent size--knights and bishops are 4 inches high. However, too many corners are cut. Despite a disclaimer that colors and decorations may vary, the simple truth is that the pieces in the box are either plain-dark gray or slightly speckled light gray. Unlike the ones on the box photograph, they look like pieces waiting to be painted. (Which would be a decent project, perhaps, but buyers ought to know that's what they'll get.) Also, the fold-out board is plain white and has to be glued to the included paper chess board, and no rules are included. --Richard Farr ... Read more Reviews (53)

Harry Potter Slime Chamber Series Action Figure: Harry Average Customer Review: Toy list price: $9.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Harry is getting himself into a sticky situation in the Chamber series of action figures. Dressed in a red sweater over a blue shirt, blue pants, and tennis shoes, the young wizard looks like an average boy. Put on the black robe he wore into the Forbidden Forest (so it's now covered in cobwebs) and place the wand in one of his hands, and he looks more like the second-year student we all know and love. Included with the figure are a black cauldron and a container of colored slime. The slime can be used to fill the cauldron, to pour over the figure, or simply to drip back and forth between your hands. Harry has enough points of articulation to make play fun and he's able to stand solidly on his own. --Pam Lauer ... Read more Reviews (8)

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Average Customer Review: CD-ROM (16 November, 2001) list price: $14.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is the perfect game forPotter fans who've read the books, seen the movie, and still want more of J.K.Rowling's amazing world. As would-be wizard Harry Potter, you can run amuck in avirtual Hogwarts, learn to cast spells, play Quidditch, eat chocolate frogs, talk with teachers and classmates, and, of course, try to defeatYou-Know-Who. This is one of those rare games that both very young kids and their parents willbe able to enjoy. You don't need the hair-trigger reflexes of a 13-year-oldNintendo ninja to explore the complex and mysterious world of Hogwarts School ofWitchcraft and Wizardry. In fact, exploring the school is half the fun. Thereare secret passages, shifting staircases, and dangerous shrubbery wherever youlook. The ultimate battle at the end is suitably challenging, but overall, thegame is fairly forgiving. And you don't have to discover every single nook andcranny in order to pass to the next level. Interacting with one's fellow students is also fun, and a real treat for seriousPotter fans. As in the books, some schoolmates are helpful, some are rude, andsome are simply awestruck when they meet you, the famous Harry Potter. Nearlyall the characters from the book can be found in the game, including Potter palsHermione Granger and Ron Weasley. Some characters are even more fully realizedthan they were in the movie: Fred and George Weasley, for instance, are alwayspopping up in unexpected places via elaborate secret doors. Thanks to excellentvoice work and diligent artistry from the game developers, the characters in thegame look and sound like the characters from the film. It's hard not to lose yourself in the lush graphics and delightfulconversations, but as Professor McGonagall might say, Harry is at Hogwarts tolearn, not to socialize! The way you learn and perform spells is clever: youmust trace a specific onscreen pattern with the mouse. Accuracy and speed inyour lessons wins house points for Gryffindor. Aside from your schoolwork, youmust win Quidditch matches, solve mysteries, and eventually confrontYou-Know-Who. The game is charming, but it is unfortunately obvious that a few corners werecut. For instance, sometimes solid walls can go semitransparent from certainangles, and the edges of the oval-shaped Quidditch Pitch look blocky andamateurish. The game also has a few bugs here and there. And finally, disappointingly, the pictures don't move. Still, the fun of this game is not inthe playing of the game itself. The main fun lies in progressing through andinteracting with J.K. Rowling's unforgettable universe. On that point, the gameis a huge success. --Eric Fredrickson Pros:

The Sorcerer's Companion: A Guide to the Magical World of Harry Potter by Allan Zola Kronzek, Elizabeth Kronzek Average Customer Review: Paperback (18 September, 2001) list price: $15.95 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Harry Potter aficionados: remember when Buckbeak, Hagrid's petHippogriff, was put on trial by the Committee for the Disposal of DangerousCreatures? This crazy idea was not invented by Harry Potter's creator, J.K.Rowling. In fact, from medieval times all the way up to the 19th century, animals and even insects were often charged with crimes, arrested, imprisoned, tried, convicted, and sometimes executed. Harry Potter's fantastic world ofmagic has its roots in true history, mythology, and folklore; father-daughterteam Allan Zola Kronzek and Elizabeth Kronzek have now made this wealth ofastonishing information available to Muggles in their Sorcerer'sCompanion. From astrology to Grindylow to reading tea leaves to witchpersecution, this fascinating volume gets to the bottom of every magical mysteryconnected with Hogwarts. Readers learn the unusual method by which premodernEuropeans protected themselves from the cry of the uprooted Mandrake, involvinga loyal dog and a rope. (Professor Sprout's solution was to have her herbologystudents wear earmuffs). Hermione probably knew, when she was hexed by DracoMalfoy so that her teeth suddenly grew past her chin, that hexes originated inEurope. But did she know the connection between hexes and the folk magic of thePennsylvania Dutch? For fans of the tremendously popular Harry Potter series, oranyone who is intrigued by magical lore, the Sorcerer's Companion willquickly become a true friend. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter ...
