2-0 out of 5 stars Only seems to work about 28% of the time
A little disappointed...I had much better luck with the book "How to Attract White Women." However, Ming Tan's book did get me more dates than "How to Attract Insane and Hateful Women Who Very Much Resemble Ann Coulter."

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
Written by an intelligent sensitive Asian woman who displays understanding and wisdom.Full of practical advice, lots of quotes from Asian ladies, and good reading. The author is especially good on understanding and explaining the differences between varied Asian cultures and countries -- China, Korea, Japan, Thailand and the Philippines.Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars A better book would be...
"Understanding why books like 'How to Attract Asian Women' are just...wrong".

I haven't read this book, but the title alone stopped me.Here's why:people need to understand the complexities of racial diversity and culture not because of a fetish, but because it exists.Period!!

If you have a "fetish", you might rethink your way of looking at life. The fetish thing objectifies women (or men, whatever your preference) and it's simply shallow. It also indicates that you may just lack an understanding of racial and cultural differences.

Instead of buying into this fetish, begin with finding out who YOU are. When was the last time you thought about your ancestry?I'm a white guy in my thirties and because I never had to think about my German background, I didn't know it existed until about two years ago.Now that I know it, I drink more hefe-weizen.

Then read about the "why's" of culture(s)...NOT the do's and don'ts.Knowing what to do and what not to do only masks the deeper part of the iceberg.

Look below the surface.Get to the bottom of things.Don't feed into your fetish or this book.Feed into your mind and be proud of who you are and...vive le difference(s)!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A visual treat!
When I first leafed through this book I could not put it down because it is such a rich visual treat. Each page contains a luminous collage of paintings, calligraphy and graphics through which we are introduced to some of the many artifacts and traditions of the Chinese culture. Some words such as "gong fu," "feng shui," and "doufu" are already quite familiar to westerners. Less familiar but equally important are words such as "hong bao" (lucky red envelopes which all children receive for Chinese New Year), "qi pao" (the elegant high collared dresses worn by Chinese women),"shi er sheng xiao" (12 animals of the Chinese zodiac), "tu zhang" (hand carved seals bearing a person's name) and "xiao shun" (the words for filial piety, much emphasized in the teachings of Confucius). The pages are large and the graphics bold, making it a suitable book for sharing with a class. This is a book which visual artists, scholars, teachers and children alike will surely appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I hope that others will discover this book too.I am going to share it with my ESOL students for Chinese New Year.I am learning a lot from the book.I really enjoy trying to pronounce the words. My Chinese-Vietnamese students can probably assist me with the correct pronunciation and tones, now that I have some idea. ... Editorial Review

"Happy Chinese New Year!" this lovely book exuberantly proclaims. Full of extraordinary, richly colorful illustrations resembling lacquered boxes, this book is as visually delicious as Demi's previous books The Stonecutter and The Empty Pot. Children will love closely examining the flurry of activity associated with this important holiday. They will also appreciate the accompanying minimal, straightforward descriptions of everything from heavenly beings to candied coconut. As they learn the basics of this ancient holiday, they'll also enjoy finding their own animal sign of the Chinese New Year based on the year of their birth: "Each Chinese year is named after an animal, and each animal has certain characteristics. Because the moon's cycle begins again every 12 years, there are 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac--one for each year of the lunar cycle." The book proceeds to romp through sections such as "Sweep and Dust," "Make a Fresh Start," "Decorate!," "Paint and Parade!," and "Cook." "Pop! Pop! Pop!" explains the importance of firecrackers in the New Year celebration. This delightful, elaborate picture book is a fine introduction to the Chinese New Year. (Ages 4 to 8) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buillding a home library for my daughter
I haven't found a book by Demi that isn't terrific. This is a great book for young children, it gives lots of great information on the Chinese New Year and what one does to get ready for the New Year celebration! A must have for anyone with an who wants their child to know about their hertitage!

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative book!
This is a nice introduction to chinese new year.I will use it as a informational guide and have my Chinese-Vietnamese students look it over to facilitate a discussion about their new year.Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply written and beautifully illustrated
This is a simply written and beautifully illustrated book about the Chinese New Year. Through delicate line drawings and jewel like colors the author/illustrator captures the essence of Chinese mythical creatures, flora, fauna, heavenly creatures and mortals. We learn about Chinese zodiac symbols, gods, how Chinese people prepare for the New Year, why they eat special kinds of foods on New Year's Day, the symbolism of specific flowers as gifts, and the meanings of Chinese characters hung on doorways. Demi is the talented author and illustrator of many children's books with Chinese themes. This book is definitely one of my favorites. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Becoming outdated quickly
I have been to various regions in China throughout the last five years and find that much of this book is outdated (esp. in the context of mega-cities like Shanghai). However, the author does give some valuable insight into the reasons for some of the more enduring problems which Westerns have in China. At least it will allow you to be a bit more inspective of your own behavior and those around you.. Do choose a few companion books if you want a well-rounded view of modern China

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and Practical
This focus of this book is to help westerners who intend to conduct business in China - however you will enjoy reading it whether you're visiting China for business or pleasure and even if you desire simply to get greater insight into Chinese worldview and not only the appropriate way to act in different situations, but also some historical and social background which governs the way Chinese people think and act. Some actions that may have seemed strange or perhaps even offensive, won't seem that way in this new light, when you manage to look at the world a little bit thorugh the eyes of a Chinese person.

Having an insight into another culture helps to broaden one's horizons as well as to prevent misunderstandings and open the way to harmonious relationships - both personal and professional.

The book is filled with numerous stories from the author's past experiences and the experiences of others which help to illustrate the points the author is making. The book is not only very informative, insightful and practical, it is also very entertaining to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Good I bought it Twice!
I was involved in negotiating a huge deal with a Chinese based company and could not help but feel there were many things our potential client left unsaid. I read this book overnight and the next day saw an immediate improvement in understanding on both sides of the table. I can hosesntly say I don't think I would of won their business if I did not find & read this book. I highly recommended this book to everyone else getting involved with the client (after we closed the deal) and everyone raved about how insightful and helpful it is. My book got passed around so often it became lost to me and I ordered another copy to use as a reference. BUY THIS BOOK! ... Read more

Lonely Planet China (Lonely Planet China)
by Damian, Harper, Marie Cambon, Katja Gaskell, Thomas Huhti, Bradley Mayhew, Korina Miller, Mielikki Org

    Editorial Review

From Antarctica to Zimbabwe, if you're going there, chances are Lonely Planet has been there first. With a pithy and matter-of-fact writing style, these guides are guaranteed to calm the nerves of first-time world travelers, while still listing off-the-beaten-path finds sure to thrill even the most jaded globetrotters. Lonely Planet has been perfecting its guidebooks for nearly 30 years and as a result, has the experience and know-how similar to an older sibling's "been there" advice. The original backpacker's bible, the LP series has recently widened its reach. While still giving insights for the low-budget traveler, the books now list a wide range of accommodations and itineraries for those with less time than money.

Just as the authors describe China as "massive and endlessly fascinating," so is the material they have collected in this guide--an important travelers' opus. The 200-plus maps feature keys in English and Chinese script and there are essential details on transport options, a 12-page Chinese arts section, and a useful feature on the Chinese language.--Kathryn True ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A good review of LP.
I arrived home from China 2 weeks ago after being there for 2 weeks. I visited the most amazing places, and yes, I took the most recent LP with me. Alot of reviewers here have stated the lack of important information in this publication, however, I found this book to be valuble on my journey. China is a tough place to travel, English isnt spoken in most places and the general public (outside of those who deal with tourists often) are not a particularly friendly bunch to westerners. In reading this guide, you must take into account that it ISNT a tour guide, it is simply a reference to sites and popular places. I found the Chinese text to be very helpful when using taxi's. China is an ever changing place, and if you have ever been there, you will know how vast it really is. A mecca of laneways and confusing streets. LP was an invaluble read for me and I would recommend this guide for those who are imbarking on thier first trip to this wonderful place.
As a well travelled person, I have used LP many times in different places, I think some people forget to step outside the book and just find things on their own will...

3-0 out of 5 stars Consider National Geographic Traveler
I received a copy of the Lonely Planet China as a gift.I am neutral about the book.Good general information.However...China is so dynamic and changing...it doesn't ring true in many cases.

I would suggest the National Geographic Traveler China guide. It is very well balanced...gives excellent background...so the traveler can interpret and experience the wonders of China through high quality text, pictures and maps.

I would still suggest the Lonely Planet guide for those that have not travelled much...and a starting point. But those that have past international travel experience will find it much too basic and generic.Nat'l Geographic will provide a comprehensive pretrip planning guide so you can best tailor your trip and will enhance your experience while visting.

Another factoid side note. The author of National Geographic Traveler China (Damian Harper) co-authored several guides of China, Beijing, and Hong Kong for Lonely Planet. To validate...click the D. Harper's name near the book title above.Same author...but with the quality of National Geographic.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware the book
To echo the words of other readers, this is disappointing and out of date.

On the second point, bear in mind that many prices have increased (sometimes more than doubled) since this book was published.

On the first, try to ignore almost every recommendation on accomodation and food that the guidebook makes. In many locations the majority of listed restaurants are Western and those that are Chinese are poor quality, high priced and seem to be recommended only for having an English menu.Go somewhere else, point, go for pot-luck or learn a little Chinese before you go and you'll enjoy everything much more. ...
