Texas Instruments TI30XIIS 2-Line Scientific Calculator
Average Customer Review: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Electronics
list price: $21.95

Editorial Review

There are many inexpensive scientific calculators on the market, but few boast the two-line display and other advanced features users get with the TI-30x IIS. The display shows the equation you are creating on the top line, and the numbers or symbols you are currently entering on the second line. Once the equation is solved, the results are displayed on the second line, and you can use the four arrow keys on the front of the calculator to edit the original equation in any way you like for a recalculation. Better still, pressing the up arrow repeatedly lets you browse through a cache of dozens of previous calculations, meaning you can look back to see the answer to a problem you solved two minutes ago, two days ago, or whenever.

The device uses solar power when possible but can fall back on the internal batteries (which are included) if there isn't enough light. The buttons wiggle around a little too much and require a firm keystroke to register input, but the fact that input can be followed by looking at the output on the first line helps to cut down on mistakes. There is a shift key that doubles the functions of most buttons, and although the TI-30X IIS isn't festooned with as many buttons or functions as some other calculators we've tested in this price range, it's still very capable. There are three angle modes (degrees, radians, and grads), scientific and engineering notation modes, and even one- or two-variable statistical modes. Five variables can also be assigned to their own memory slots. The documentation is lacking, as everything is presented on a single folded sheet of paper, but Texas Instruments did manage to pack several illustrated examples on the page. The calculator comes with a snap-on cover that fits on the back of the device whenyou are using it. The calculator carries a one-year limited warranty. --T.Byrl Baker

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2Durable and Inexpensive!
Main Points:
I used this calculator for over 10 years before it finally stopped working, and I treated it fairly roughly (e.g.,coffe spills).I think others here have attested to the functionality of the TI-30, so I just want to emphasize that it's a tough little gadget as well. Yes, the buttons are on the small side and there is a bit of play, but this was never a major problem (although at times it slows down data entry). You can go to http://education.ti.com/downloads for a good overview of TI calculators, and you can scope out one of TI's major competitors at http://www.casio.com.

A Little History:
This was also one of the first commercially available low-priced calculators that had two-line display and backspace to correct or edit data entry. The dual-power and scrolling display features were also once unusual. The top line (for data entry) shows up to 11 characters; you can scroll backwards or forwards up to 88! The bottom line (shows results) displays up to a 10-digit answer along with a 2-digit exponent.

Individual Needs Differ:
From the reviews here, it appears that high school math is now more difficult than it once was.If you know that you're going to need graphing capability, then obviously this is not the choice for you.Similarly, the prevalence of laptop computers and math/stats software may obviate the need for some of the more advanced features.

Recommendation:
The layout is very good and, for such a low price, it packs a lot of calculating might. However, high school (or college)students may want to narrow their choices and then ask their teacher which one has the most relevant functions for the next few years of math. Compared to twenty-five or so years ago, one can now get a lot more calculator for the money. Depending on your budget, therefore, you might determine that a calculator like this is sufficient for your short-term needs, but that you'll need a new one if you go on to more advanced stats and math.In any event, this is a durable calculator that works very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked great
I didn't take math my senior year of high school and didn't know where my calculator was when I started college.I bought this one because it was cheap, compared to the TI 83 that I wanted.I used it for 2 years before it was damaged (my fault, not a product defect).

I bought a cheap calculator to replace it and have been very disappointed. I plan on getting another calculator like these before my statistics class next semester.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Middle School
This is a rather basic calculator that is great for middle schoolers in pre-algebra and algebra courses for parts of the year. This works well for middle school purposes, but will probably need to be replaced with a graphing calculator midway through algebra and definitely for geometry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent calculator
If you think this calculator is for elementary school kids, you're WRONG. I can't afford a fully flegged graphing calculator yet, so this is my only alternative. It's served me extrodinary through Honors Chemistry and Geometry (especially calculating moles and gas pressures). It's also the calculator that my school has for us in case we don't have a calculator. Overall, this is one of the best calculators you can get for your twenty bucks or so, buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for 5th graders
This is a great calcualtor, some might say it's for fifth graders but you can easily use it through middle school as well. Even in 9th grade math you don't even start using the more complicated functions that this calculator provides. I kept mine inside my binder for years and it never broke, the solar pannel is very, very, extremely convenient since you don't have to buy batteries every six months. I never had any trouble using it and it has always worked. I'm looking forward to use it for quite a few more years.

This is a great buy, it's cheap but it certanly lasts a lifetime.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 1/2 years after 1st review
The kids ... as this calculator looks as if it belongs in the 5th grade they will have nothing to do with it.

While it is a great 5th graders calculator to limit it to grade school is ignorant.

Being much older than grade school I use this calculator for modular arithmetic and while it definitely has problems and is no HP32Sii I can assure you that it is the best general service scientific calculator for its price.

And yes, I wish that did not physically look pilfered from my grandson's backpack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great "Review" Book
This book is the 2nd Algebra book that I bought. I am the type of person who goes beyond what is given to me. This book is a great book for review purposes. I am over half way through the year in Algebra 1 and already know how to do everything that will be taught to me by the end of the year. I have really learned a lot from these books and I will say, that this is a great book for anyone that is studying Algebra.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Really Helps!
I have only bought this book for learning and for studying before I am gonna go back to school, but I have learn a lot from it! I really explains clearly enough so you can understand what it is talking about or you can do it after its example.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for brushing up
This book is an excellent overview for people who may not have had any algebra for a long time, it is clear, and has very good examples and explanations.Unlike many 'learn algebra' type books, this one shows you exactly how to do the problems from start to finish. I believe you could actually teach yourself an entire semester of algebra on your own with only this book as a teacher.I highly reccomend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Those Looking for A Quick Math Refresher Course
For a college entrance requirement, I had to take a math assessment that I was a bit nervous about, seeing as how I haven't really done any math in a few months. However, when I found CLIFFS QUICKREVIEW: BASIC MATH AND PRE-ALGEBRA, my nervousness quickly faded. This book features every bit of "need to know" basic math and pre-algebra in a nutshell, instead of going on and on for pages, doing nothing more than confusing you. The format is great, and offers practice questions and answers, as well as easy ways to remember how to solve each problem. If you are looking for a quick refresher course in basic math and pre-algebra, this is the one book that you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars really good
this book: 1. will help you solve 80% of the math the averageperson will encounter in their life, 2. [and if a parent] will allow you the math knowledge to allow you to help you to help your kids with their homeworkuntil they reach that age where they are sure that your to dumb and way toold to help them, anyway, 3. [if a student] only half listen to the 'reallydull' math teacher and then learn it on your own - but it will really helpif you listen and study on your own.

3-0 out of 5 stars lack of exercises (2&half stars)
I needed to provide my two sons, 4th & 5th grade, challenging math because the school is not able to facilitate any to them. This book is quite self-explanatory and my two boys could follow it fine.(Note: I am NOT trying to recommend this book for 4th & 5th graders. My sons are at least 2 years ahead of average math skills. I am trying to emphasize that the problems are so well explained that my lower school sons can follow) However, this book lacks the following: Not enough exercises;no indepth exercise or problems; lack of word problems and applicaton. It serves well in the surface level of most pre-algebra topics, but not in-depth. I would recommend another one : Prealgebra by K. Elayn Martin-Gay, which is packed with exercises, and the lessons are very self-explanatory as well; and there are answers keys to the odd questions only.

1-0 out of 5 stars Try taking algebra from the professor
I had Dr. Robert E. Moyer for a professor.I find it interesting that someone that can't teach the class can write a book about algebra.90% of the people in our class got a D, and some failed it.I would think twice about purchasing this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too brief
There is such a thing as too brief of a review. If you want tutorial help in solving problems more then the easiest, this is not the book for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but many typographical errors
I've been using this book to brush up on (and, in some cases, learn for the first time) certain important Algebraic concepts before my Calc II class begins in the Fall.I can't yet say how well it's prepared me - but in most cases, the explanations are lucid, and examples do much of the talking quite well when the exposition is far too dry and concise.

One warning: The book's riddled with typos. No, x^2+8x<15 is not equivalent to x^2-8x+15<0; y^2=4py isn't the equation of a parabola; etc.Bear this in mind when going through the Conic Sections chapter, where - for some reason - it editing seems to have been especially bad. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good product
This calculator is probobly the best one that i have owned. You can create graphs with it, you can do equations, you can even do complex algebra/trigonometry/calculus on this calculator. Also, for the kids, there are games that you can download quite simply of the internet for you to play in case by any chance you get bored during math class. (Don't get any bright ideas!) I know this product is very expensive, but it is well worth it once you realize how good this product actually is. Do yourself a favor, and buy this product!

5-0 out of 5 stars great calculator
I found this to be a useful calculator in high school. It definitely helped me see a lot of functions and perform experiments.

5-0 out of 5 stars The gold standard for calculators
I purchased my TI-83 Plus in 1999 and still have it today. I have never had any problems with it and can only remember changing the batteries 3 or 4 times. I've even dropped it from my 2nd story balcony by accident (more like a friend knocked it off a table on the balcony) and it didn't break. When I turned it on after it fell, my calculations were still on the screen!

It is easy to use and fast enough for all high school and college mathematics.

I'd recommend it to anyone who needs a workhorse of a calculator. ... Read more
