2-0 out of 5 stars Good as supplemental text book, NOT good as primary textbook
There are not enough examples to explain everything you would need to know.I've found I had to go to the web or other more basic Calculus books many times to try to solve some of the problems in there. There are better books out there for those of us looking for complete breakdown of the problems and better explanations.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction and review of Calculus ......
I trudge back to this book again and again, being embarassed at having forgotten some basic idea or technique. This is an excellent supplemental text to a formal Calculus textbook like "Calculus " by Stewart. The writing is lucid and ideas are explained with the novice in mind. I find that reading this book first BEFORE getting into a meatier textbook helps me understand the material.

My experience has been that if I do not "do calculus" at least twice a week I forget the techniques (not ideas) almost immediately. Therefore, if you want a review of Calculus this book is a great tool.If you are new to calculus this book will help you understand important concepts like differentiation vs integration.I also found that reading pertinent chapters in Selby's "Geometry and Trigonometry For Calculus" and then reading related material in this book is a tremendous help.

Another strong point is that for us over 50 the font size and book layout is easy on the eye.So whether you are a novice or someone who has not had the chance to use Calculus in a while; or someone "brand new" to Calculus, get this book.An excellent resource for learning and entertainment!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good value for the budget-minded math student
Elliott Mendelson does an excellent job of presenting basic calculus concepts in an inexpensive book. His explanations are very clear, and the book is actually fun to use.Perhaps my only criticism is that this bookdoes not use color which often helps to clarify figures of graphs, butblack and white figures are to be expected in an outline. If you'reinterested in a supplement to your text or if you want a book forself-study, I strongly recommend "Beginning Calculus." ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Try taking algebra from the professor
I had Dr. Robert E. Moyer for a professor.I find it interesting that someone that can't teach the class can write a book about algebra.90% of the people in our class got a D, and some failed it.I would think twice about purchasing this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too brief
There is such a thing as too brief of a review. If you want tutorial help in solving problems more then the easiest, this is not the book for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but many typographical errors
I've been using this book to brush up on (and, in some cases, learn for the first time) certain important Algebraic concepts before my Calc II class begins in the Fall.I can't yet say how well it's prepared me - but in most cases, the explanations are lucid, and examples do much of the talking quite well when the exposition is far too dry and concise.

One warning: The book's riddled with typos. No, x^2+8x<15 is not equivalent to x^2-8x+15<0; y^2=4py isn't the equation of a parabola; etc.Bear this in mind when going through the Conic Sections chapter, where - for some reason - it editing seems to have been especially bad. ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars A good self-study course, if you're interested
I am the reader from Montezuma, NM, and after taking a few more chemistry courses and re-reading the outline, I feel that I should add a few observations to my enthusiastic review from above, which I wrote over 3 years ago.

I own many, many Schaum's Outlines, and am satisfied with all of them. However, before you buy this outline of college chemistry or any of the other Schaum's Outlines, you need to ask yourself what your needs are. If you are looking for a brief review of a subject, you should look elsewhere. If you are taking a course in general chemistry and need a little help with some areas of it, you should look elsewhere--preferably, ask someone with a thorough grasp of the subject to explain those areas to you.

The Schaum's Outlines are best used as a self-study tool. Let's face it, reviewing an entire subject and solving all the problems to gain a solid grasp on the material is difficult and time-consuming, and I suspect few students already enrolled in a course will have the extra time to rehash what they've already been told by reading through a Schaum's Outline, and even fewer will want to go through so many problems--at least in my courses, the problems we are provided are too much to begin with.

For review purposes, Schaum's may help some students, especially if you are reviewing years of material such as I did for my IB exam. However, since you need to know what your course will test you on specifically, you would need to go through the outline along with your notes. Therefore, spending more time reviewing your course notes might be a better use of your time.

Schaum's Outlines are essentially cheaply made textbooks, and, as with other texts, the writing varies widely from one book in the series to another. If a cheap self-study course is what you seek, or you'd like to preview a course you plan to take, by all means go with Schaum's. If you are a student looking for help with a subject, seek it elsewhere.

For help with grades, I suggest you try the Scham's "How to Study" guide and follow their suggestions.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Study Aid
This book is concise and complete. The reviews are great, and the problems aren't just busywork--they actually will help you understand the material. For the higher level International Baccalaureate chemistry exam, I have had to review 2 years worth of general chemistry, and this book has helped me immensely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can be used as a informative supplement to class room text.
I am a chemistry major and found a lot of informative material included. The book explained the ideas thoroughly and the problems at the end of each section were a good source of review and practice. Everything was straight forward and easy to comprehend. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Planet Orgo...
I am giving this book 3 stars because I did not receive much help from it.A lot of the information that was covered in this book did not go into enough detail, like an entire subject was explained in two sentences. I needed a little more explanation, but I guess this is why the book is deemed an outline.

I was able to gather some (a very small amount) useful information from it. But, pick the book up anyway, because to master Orgo you need as many resources as possible, especially at 3 in the morning and you are trying to figure out where to place an ethyl group. In addition to this book, grab an elementary type orgo book, like orgo for beginners or orgo for nursing majors. These type of books explain things with great detail using an ABC approach. Then do as many problems as you can! Buy a ring of notecards and write part of the reaction on the front and the rest on the back. Study these cards every night religiously. You should be able to make sense out of the reactions and pass the class with a good grade with a considerable amount of study. (I received an A using the above method)

4-0 out of 5 stars Practice Makes Perfect
Schaum's outlines are perfect for what they propose to do -- give the student as much practice as possible. They are experience tools, not teaching tools. The secret to doing well in genchem/orgchem is to practice, practice practice. The more problems you do, the better you will become. Concepts and theories are only half the game in chemistry.

3-0 out of 5 stars So you want to do better at Organic?
What you should remember about the Schaum's series is that all of them, though they may call themselves "outlines," are in fact rather cheap textbooks. They include many more solved problems than your standard textbook, but they are also not as slick or nice to look at.

The organic chemistry outline can be helpful to you, perhaps. The main draw is that each chapter includes a summary of reactions that might be worth it... if, that is, you already know which reactions are more useful than others. The amount of information is great, and this may make it difficult for you to sort out which ones are worth your attention.

The Schaum's outlines are, in my opinion, great for those motivated students who would like to gain some knowledge of the subject. They can also help when you are stuck with a problem, as chances are you will find a solved problem in the book that is at least similar.Whether that is worth the cost is another question. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buen repaso de la gramática española
This workbook is stellar if you are looking for a good review of Spanish grammar at a high Intermediate/ Advanced level. The books cover all the essentials of Spanish grammar and if mastered, one can speak concise Spanish with optimum grammar control. This book was designed to emphasize the fundamentals. Of course, Spanish grammar goes way beyond the scope of this workbook however, it's true to it's objective and it does clarify key grammar points that can enhance one's writing and speaking abilities. I believe workbook is a great supplementary study aid to classroom instruction. It has ample practice exercises and an answer key which is vital when learning a language. The workbook is a worthy purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Workbook for Serious Study and Review
This workbook is for serious review, but definitely not for casual or superficial reading. With virtually zero Spanish background I used it as a supplement to a 1:1 language immersion course prior to starting an expat assignment in South America. I've been on assignment for a year and continue to use it to ensure that my grammar is correct and to help me master additional aspects of the language. It has extensive coverage of grammar principles, numerous exercises to reinforce learning, and includes answers in the back, making it an excellent tool for independent study. My wife has tried various other methods (books, tapes, tutors) and has just asked me to order a fresh, unmarked copy for her.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for review and self-study.
I have found this book to be an excellent study aid.It is well organized to cover all the fundamentals of Spanish grammar (Nouns, Pronouns, Adjectives and Verbs, etc). Each topic is reviewed and drilled thoroughly in its own chapter. The book promotes retention of material through the use of many written exercises. To check your progress, there is an answer key in the back of the book. There is a solid review of those perennially difficult areas: the use of "Ser" vs. "Estar" and the uses of "Por" and "Para".The book reviews the special uses of some verbs in this lovely language.

The value received for the money paid is good. While the book is not covered with glossy pictures, the contents are logically organized. There is no wasted detail. To me, this aspect of the book is actually very refreshing.

I have been studying Spanish at the local University's Continuing Education Department for some time, and have found it to be an excellent addition to my Spanish language study tools. While I would not necessarily recommend this book as a primary learning tool for a novice student, I would definitely recommend it to those individuals who whish to review the language, and to improve their skills at the beginner to intermediate level. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A VENERABLE BOOK WITHOUT CALCULUS
Since 1936 a very nice supplement for Advanced High Scool or "without calculus" two semester college physics. Since there is no deductions it can be hardly used as a textbook. Not even
v^2=(v_0)^2+2ax or 1/R=1/R_1+1/R_2 ..., etc, (that don't need calculus) are deduced.
A telescope is described in one and a half line and there is a Spetial relativity chapter but there are no Maxwell's equations. It is a very nice book! But if you want deductions or
calculus or if you are chemistry, math or engineering student you'd better buy "Physics for
Engineering and Science" also from Schaum's outlines.

4-0 out of 5 stars If You're in AP Physics & Need Some Review...
This book is awesome. It contains a ton of word problems, perfect for AP Test Prep and HW!

1-0 out of 5 stars a little light
This book is probably good for high school physics.I am in a physics for non-majors course in college and I found the material in the book to be not in-depth enough. To be honest I found it relatively useless to consult when I had a tough question and needed some help. There are better books out there.I just ordered 3 books that were recommended to me: "The Physics Problem Solver" by James Ogden, "How To Solve Physics Problems and Make The Grade" by Robert M. Oman and Daniel M. Oman and "3,000 Solved Problems in Physics" by Alvin Halpern.

Don't bother with this book if you feel lost in physics because it won't really help you. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Check It Out From Your Library
The book is your source to a plethora of additional problems.Yet don'texpect the exam problems to be similar to those you find in this Schaumseries. You might find some of these problems extra strenuous orover-simplified.For all the major functional groups, the book doesprovide lots of practice problems in reaction products, reactivity, andstereochemistry. You might need to cover up the solutions whichimmediately follow the questions.Students should foucs on soloving themechanism-type of problems from textbooks before looking at this book. Check this out from your library!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful
The answers directly follow the questions, which are not useful to make you think about organic chemistry. Very dissapointing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Focused Reader Market Too Traditional
When it comes to study tips it is very helpful to some degree. However, it is obviously focused solely on the young student. With a higher rate of midlife changes and mature students coming in, it seems to ignore the lifestyles and demands that they have to contend with while studying, such as family obligations or financial responsibilities beyond themselves or even management of time between studying and family. I would not recommend it for a mature student. ... Read more
