5-0 out of 5 stars If Pictures are words
If pictures are words, this is an epic novel in the tradition of Dickens or Tolstoy. Read carefully and bring along the tissues so that -when you reach the final chapters -you won't leave the pages damp, as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Photographer
I waited in anticipation for this book's release. It was worth the wait.Annie Liebovitz, one of the world's most talented photographers, has released a book that will touch even those who have a limited interest in photograpy. From the opening pages to the closing pages, it's very evident that this is not just another Annie Liebovitz release.Instead, it's a special edition from her heart and soul.Whether it's photographs of her family and friends or famous people from throughout the world, she tells a story that you will not easily forget.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, interesting and superb @}->---

I picked up this book years ago when it came out.Outstanding photographs throughout.Since then I married and moved a lot of my books into an office.I recently rearranged my office and found the Leibovitz book and looked through it again.I still am impressed with the images even after about 5 years of not viewing them.Really a time capsule of collected photos.

Superb photography, amazing subjects. Very interesting essay by Susan Sontag. Great to see all those wonderful women together. Gives a fresh perspective on half the human race.

I loved this book.It made me feel like a real woman.

4-0 out of 5 stars Image as Everywoman
Fiction is my preference when writing book reviews, because I love the complexity of words, stories, and the vagaries of human nature with its endless permutations. But when I received Leibovitz's astonishing compilation of photographs as a gift, I thought I might attempt an impression of page after page of females, as seen through the professional eye of one of the most important photographers of our generation.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic photo book
annie's book is an incredible collection of celebrity images with a series of text that describes her ascent to the top in her field

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Most Celebrated Photographer of the 20th Century!
Annie Leibovitz's name is as recognizable as her photos. This collection spans two decades filled with her best work mostly from Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone, but including some previously unpublished ones. She has the knack to bring out the side of a celebrities personality unexpected, and a way to turn a comic photo on it's side for another uplift of laughter. Some serious, some funny and many sentimental, Annie Leibovitz's photos invoke thought, humor, tenderness and empathy in every frame.A woman from modest beginnings shows the world what she has accomplished so far.It is an impressive feat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Layers of Meaning Like the Brush Strokes of Old Masters
Seeing so many celebrity photographs from the beginning of Ms. Leibovitz's career unveils many of the most effective methods that she uses to create her deep insights into the subject of the portrait.Although you may feel the subtlety of her work viscerally, these comparisons make it easier to appreciate the purposefulness of how the effects are brilliantly captured. If you are like me, this book will enhance your already deep appreciation of her work.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An intimate collection
I just saw this exhibit at our MoMA, and the work is outstanding. Some of the images are color, some black and white. There are a number of styles and artists, ranging from the very famous to those unknown outside of their small communities. The point is that these are images of musicians--it's that simple.
4-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Photos!
The catalog is gorgeous, the photographs are indeed spectacular. While the written entries were wonderful, they were too few and left me wanting more.I guess that's a good thing!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a photography book, not a music anthology
It seems to me that the other reviewers have mistakenly criticized the book for its choice of music artists. Such decisions are secondary to the nature of this work of art. Annie Leibovitz is a photographer of surpassing quality and her ability to capture the latent stories of her subjects is on full display in this book. The idea is not so much to produce stunning or provocative photographs as it is to make manifest the character and circumstances of the various pictured musical artists. Seen in this light, Leibovitz's book should be lauded for its ability to tell a story without getting in the way, and to highlight subtleties without resorting to contrivance. "American Music" is a wonderful work of art, as should be expected from such a distinguished artist. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes, easy steps, wonderful results.
This book puts you on the fast track to grafting the styles of famous artists into your own work through more than five dozen easy-to-follow recipes. Not surprisingly, you'll find yourself learning more than you originally expected to about Photoshop.

    2-0 out of 5 stars not-so-fast ...
Earlier this year I reviewed what many will see as the companion volume to this book ("Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook for Digital Photographers"), written by the same author. Unfortunately, the newer publication is less useful. It seems to have been written on a pretext that it's clever to be able to duplicate what traditional artists can do. This seems - from my own personal viewpoint - to be greatly undervaluing the power of Photoshop (and similar software). Practitioners of digital fine art should (really, constructively) be looking to explore what the principles of prior and traditional art can mean within a new domain.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Glimpse into the Creator's Mind
Here you can browse through the minutiae of a genius' observations about the world around him--from flight, the human body, the nature of water, proportion, optics, movement and weight. What will impress you on every fascinating page is the universality of Leonardo's thirst for knowledge, making him truly the epitome of the "Renaissance man," and perhaps the last human who can truly be called a polymath: "the natural desire of good men is knowledge."

5-0 out of 5 stars Da Vinci was a genius before his time
Leonardo was born in the Tuscan town of Vinci on April 15, 1452. He was a scientist before there was science, an inventor whose ideas outstripped the technology of his time, and a famous artist who produced the most valuable and recognized painting in the world. His career was one in which he would create some of the most famous paintings in the world, including perhaps the most-widely recognized and most highly valuable painting of all time, the Mona Lisa. Leonardo da Vinci was more than just an artist, however. He was also interested in science, anatomy and architecture. His sketchbooks, filled with his ideas for inventions, stunned the world when they were found centuries after his death.
5-0 out of 5 stars DA CODE TO ALL THINGS DA VINCI
The Da Vinci Code? In one word: genius. And we don't mean Dan Brown's tome. We mean the man himself, the Renaissance master who very nameconjures up the definition of "brilliance." This collection--- the first to be published in more than 35 years --- is culled from Leonardo's myriad of notebooks that he filled with ruminations on painting, botany, aerodynamics, geography, physical science, anatomy and architecture. This massive collection illuminates the mind of one of history's greatest minds and talents through the most extraordinary sketches, drawings, jottings and paintings. Most fascinating: da Vinci's own handwritten notes, here carefully translated and insightfully edited by art historian H. Anna Suh. Somewhere in that Great Palette, even good ol' Miss Mona is sweetly smiling. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Frida Kahlo's diary, like her art, is painted in breathtakingly vivid colors. It covers her tumultuous last decade and encompasses love letters, political musings on Communism, and resplendent paintings. The paintings, peopled with mythic figures, self-portraits, and monsters, articulate Kahlo's fantastic visions. One drawing melds a procession of crying faces onto an intertwined couple surrounded by body parts, only to dissolve into a mass of roots and dendrites. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diary of Frida Kahlo: An Intimate Self-Portrait , A Review by Cheryl Millard
Owning this book is really the closest you will become in owning an actual piece of kahlos intimate belongings even if it is only a reproduction. The books cover is a faithful reproduction of the diarys cover, you feel as if you are holding in your hands the actual diary,The pages are reproduced in a way that shows where the writing on the other side of the page has started to come through or where the paint, ink and marker has bled .You get a direct insight into the inner thoughts of this tormented, but highly talented person, tormented by the chronic pain from a life altering injury at such a young age as well as tormented by her love for Diego Rivera, miscarriages, opperations to alieviate the constant pain ,Frida weaves her art into words. The diary also shows her humorous side in making do with what life has dealt her with her dark sense of brash humor in a poetic yet sad way, we cannot help feeling as if we are looking into something forbidden expecting her to appear behind us as we look into the most fragile part of her life. In the back is a page by page translation for those of us who cannot read spanish, you will find this very helpful. This is another book that anyone who loves Kahlo should not be without,it is really well done in all aspects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now my Frida Kahlo Library is Complete!
To actually see the pages of Frida's diary (in full color) is amazing. Her diary is a work of art. Although heart-wrenching to read, her poetry, musings, and, quite possibly, 'random neural firings' give us a very personal picture of her last days.No Frida library is complete without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars About This Book
Retrospective collection of photographs. Destined to be another Michael Kenna collectible. A handsomely elegant production by Chris Pichler and Hideyuki Taguchi: Oversize-volume format in square shape. A very tall and thick book. Peach silk cloth boards with embossed titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Michael Kenna. Essay, "Inventing Peace", by Anne Wilkes Tucker in the English original and Japanese translation. As difficult as it may be to imagine, Kenna's following in Japan is larger than in the United States. Extensive Biography and List of Plates appended at the end. In pictorial DJ with white and gray titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published as a companion book to the artist's first retrospective, the new collection presents an overview of Kenna's landscape photographs made between 1994 and 2004, at the height of his fame. "Michael Kenna is arguably the most influential landscape photographer of his generation. The subject of over 20 books and hundreds of solo exhibitions throughout Asia, Australia, Europe and the United States, Michael Kenna often works at dawn or during the night. He concentrates primarily on the interaction between the ephemeral atmospheric conditions of the natural landscape, human-made structures and sculptural mass. Kenna's exquisitely crafted prints are included in such Permanent Museum Collections as The National Gallery Washington, DC, The Museum of Decorative Arts Prague and The Victoria and Albert Museum London. In 2001, Michael Kenna was made a Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters by the Ministry of Culture in France. Born in Widnes, England in 1953, he currently lives in Portland, Oregon" (Publisher's blurb). Anne Wilkes Tucker's illuminating essay examines Kenna's influence and impact on contemporary photography. One of the best single introductions to the art of an important photographer. 2006, ModernRare.com ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Binding Fell Apart
I noticed the review that said this book was worthy of "permanent display on your coffee table."Well, I don't think that will be possible with my book, as the binding fell apart after 6 months. The book has gotten a fair amount of use, but nothing out of the ordinary.I've since seen a similar problem with a couple of the display copies at bookstores (which is why they've been demoted to display copies). So I don't think this is an isolated problem. It seems like the book is so big that they didn't make a strong enough binding for it.So just a warning for this thinking of buying this book. The good news is that, on the advice of one of the reviews, I bought Colorado: Yesterday & Today to replace my copy of Colorado: 1870-2000.I agree that it is the better book and now it will be on permanent display on my coffe-table.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of permanent display on a coffee table
This book is excellent in look, feel, and quality. It is intriguing to see how much landscape has changed in 130 years. Many times for the better and many times for the worse. In every case it is very interesting to see two pictures side by side and compare 1870 with 2000.The photographer was very meticulous to capture every shot as closely as possible to the original perspective and frame, which really enhances the "then and now" feel of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearing Up the Confusion and Getting the Photo Details
There appears to be some confusion as all of the reviews of the original "Colorado 1870-2000" big book are credited to this, the paperback "Colorado 1870-2000 Revisited: The History Behind the Images".This book is a companion book to the original. It takes each photo set from the big book and goes into detail about the location, changes, and how Fielder acquired each photo. These are the things that, being left out of the original, made several people give the big book negative reviews. While it would have been nice (and certainly less expensive) to have everything in one volume, we now have the information for which those disappointed with the big book were looking. While the big book is a piece of coffee table art, the Revisited book fits neatly on your bookshelf, ready to be taken down to answer those questions posed by your friends perusing the big book.I take a bit of offense at having to have paid for two different books, but they belong together and I feel were money well spent; the big book for the beautiful photos and the revisited book for its entertaining and educational material. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars About This Book
Artist Book and Exhibition Monograph. Collection of photographs on subject. Possibly the photographer's single most beautiful book. The true first. Precedes all other editions. One of the most exquisite productions ever made by Michael Kenna, Chris Pichler, and Nazraeli Press: Oversize-volume format. A large book in square shape. Red silk cloth boards wrapped in handsome black silk folding slipcase in the Japanese style, with white toggles at the ends. Photographs by Michael Kenna. Text in Japanese and English by Kotaro Iizawa. Printed in Tokyo, Japan to the very highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of a series of exhibitions in the United States and Japan. "Michael Kenna's photographs have long inspired words such as 'mysterious', 'elegant' and 'hauntingly beautiful', adjectives that likewise describe the Japanese landscape. These photographs are the result of an ideal pairing of artist and subject. Kenna has had a large following in Japan ever since his first exhibition there in 1987. His many subsequent exhibitions and publications in Japan have provided him with ample opportunities to visit and photograph. During the past several years, as this project began to take shape, Kenna's trips became more frequent and intense. The resulting images are stunning" (Publisher's blurb). "He has been reflective when others have been militant, romantic when others have been skeptical. Such isolation can starve all but the most independent of talents, but for these it can provide a sanctuary where visions can develop undisturbed. Kenna is one of these" (The Times of London). Michael Kenna's best book thus far. 2006, ModernRare.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book
Anselm's artwork is amazing. This book tells all about the artist, his artwork, and the storys behind them. It has amazing photos and details.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Heaven
This is a fantastic book. Anselm Keifer is one of my favorite artists of today. His work is so powerful that it is difficult to imagine it translated into a printed form, but this book does a great job of an almost impossible task. Keifer's work must be seen in person to be fully felt, but short of that, this book still manages to impress.

5-0 out of 5 stars restrospective of this notable artist's career and art
The German artist Kiefer's first project titled "The Heavens" ("Die Himmel") sounded the note for the major theme of his work through the following decades. This first was a book-like project with several leaves completed in 1969. Coming after this were sculpture-like, installation-like works (before this form was widely practiced) using the earthy materials of lead, brick, metal, wood, cloth, and often cast-off materials, as used in "found" art, though with not nearly the effect. Born in 1945, Kiefer could never free himself from the oppressiveness of the German psychoses and atrocities of the Nazi years, especially being a Jew. "[Kiefer] does not assume the existence of a paradise, only the ancient need to imagine one." One sees in the artist's dense, bewitching works usually made of assorted materials this primitive longing for paradise impacted by the carnage and horrors of 20th century's crazed politics and warfare on a huge scale. The touches of brightness in many of Kiefer's works are sometimes overwhelmed by bricks and other materials the color of cinders, ashes, an unmistakable reference to the Holocaust and the "scorched earth" warfare waged by the German war machine. It is the natural materials of the art works such as leaves, ground, and cotton spun into clothing, not religious visions of Heaven, which offer any hope of transformative redemption and immortality there may be. As noted in the "Introduction," Kiefer regarded the earth as a "kind of alchemical fragment" still being forged. "In Kiefer's cosmology, the universe is an immense athanor, or alchemical oven, where spirit and matter are in continued process of creation and destruction." The book succeeds estimably as a retrospective on the span of Kiefer's career. Varying perspectives from distant to close-up on the art works enable one to grasp the complex historical, cultural, and mythical thoughts reflected in the composite, multilayered works and also the undying struggle between hope and memory embodied in them. ... This item was purchased as a gift for another family member. We already own a copy, purchased from a source other than Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely companion volume
For those who enjoyed the first volume, Volume II is a lovely companion book. In an interview, John Fielder explained that he could only put so many photos in the first volume, but going back through the hundreds of pictures that didn't make it in, he realized there were many more that were just as deserving to be published. I'm thrilled to include this book in my collection and highly recommend it for Colorado history lovers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the Media Hype
As a Colorado history buff, I'm a little annoyed at all the hype the media has given the Fielder-Jackson project. The fact of the matter is Fielder's project is in no way original or ground-breaking.Several other photographers have quietly done similar projects over the years. The first that I know of to publish a then-and-now book on Colorado was Robert L. Brown, who published a series of such books in the 1960s.The first person to start work on a then-and-now book in modern times was Grant Collier, who reshot the images of his great-great grandfather, Joseph Collier.Joshua Dinar has also done a book called "Denver: Then & Now" and there have been a number of other regional Colorado books with a similar theme done over the years.Of these books, "Colorado: Yesterday & Today" by Grant Collier is, in my opinion, undoubtedly the best.It is significantly more interesting because he reshot the images of his great-great grandfather.Collier also did the best job of finding the exact spots where the historic photos were taken and he provided a lot more historical text and insight than any of the other modern books. The next best modern book is probably Fielder's "Colorado 1870-2000," in part because of the impressive size of the book. After this, I would put "Denver: Then & Now," followed by "Colorado: 1870-2000 II".I rank this book last because it consists only of the rejects from his first book.So while the book was released in 2005, the modern photos in it were taken back in 1998.The photos in this book were rejected from the first book for a reason. They are not as historically interesting as those in the first book and Fielder didn't do a great job of precisely re-shooting the images. So unless you own all of the other books listed above, I don't see any reason to buy this book.I do also recommend Robert L. Brown's books, but since the "modern" photos in his books were taken in the 1960s, they are obviously a little outdated. But the books provide interesting insight into two past time-periods, and they also provide a lot of historical text on each of the towns in the book.
