5-0 out of 5 stars Artist and Dog
This book presents a charming side of Picasso, demonstrating his affection for a sweet dachshund named Lump. The photos show Picasso's universal, gullible side in allowing himself to be wonderfully manipulated by a dog ! The images of them together are unforgettable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars artistic insights
i got this book during his retrospective a couple of years ago, and i still go back to refer to its brilliant insights. i appreciate how richter, in his journal writings, or interviews found in this book offers ideas as to the how, why, and what of his art. it really helps make sense of his art, and thus further assists in ones appreciation of his art (and art and contemporary art in general). among several great ideas and quotes ('ever since i have been able to think, i have known that every rule and every opinion- insofar as either is ideologically motivated- is false, a hinderance, a menace, or a crime.'), there are great black and white photos of the artist, and his studio. speaking as an avid fan of richter's i cannot say how much this would appeal to a nonfan, but i assume that it would still be great to such a person who does care about art and artists in today's world ('It would be interesting to find out the total sum expended for these [art and cultural] purposes over the past ten years. Whatever it might turn out to be, it would strikingly confirm our natural lack of compassion for the poor.')

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have.

    4-0 out of 5 stars A genius.
I really enjoyed this book. I bought it at the Ricther exhibit I just saw at the SFMOMA a few weeks ago. I wasn't familiar with his work until then. I was awed at the different themes and usage of what would seem to be everyday normal moments caught with an unearthly feel. He's even using music and video installations now. This book does uses his collected notes, interviews and letters as an insight into the thinking behind the artist. Richter's philosophy of not subscribing to any ideaology is very evident here. He seems especially disdainfull of Communism as it does not afford the freedom for individual creation. He's been grasping to make sense of his art all his life and its what has been driving him. You can see it in his paintings. The work itself becomes a question. Why this subject. What is relevant? What is the importance. Why this style of painting? What is the meaning of the photograph it's based on? The book is chock full of interesting ideas on art, art history and the current state of society and the culture. Even if you don't agree with it all - it's still a very interesting read. I do recommend that you first familiarize yourself with Richter's various works first. You'll enjoy the book all the more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes, easy steps, wonderful results.
This book puts you on the fast track to grafting the styles of famous artists into your own work through more than five dozen easy-to-follow recipes. Not surprisingly, you'll find yourself learning more than you originally expected to about Photoshop.

    2-0 out of 5 stars not-so-fast ...
Earlier this year I reviewed what many will see as the companion volume to this book ("Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook for Digital Photographers"), written by the same author. Unfortunately, the newer publication is less useful. It seems to have been written on a pretext that it's clever to be able to duplicate what traditional artists can do. This seems - from my own personal viewpoint - to be greatly undervaluing the power of Photoshop (and similar software). Practitioners of digital fine art should (really, constructively) be looking to explore what the principles of prior and traditional art can mean within a new domain.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars Robert Rauschenberg: Man or Genius Man?
This book blatantly rocks my world. It has a very nice selection of images, and is much more affordable than the godly $900 retrospective catalogue. Amen.

5-0 out of 5 stars daringly junky, breathtaking, beautiful
This book is a catalogue for current exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and then the Museum of Contemporary Art, LA, and in Europe at the Pompidou Center, Paris and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Richly Rewarding Survey of the Gifts of Robert Rauschenberg
ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG: COMBIINESis the name of an exhibition currently on display and one garnering some of the warmest acceptance by both critics and public alike of any retrospective survey in years. Not that Rauschenberg is a 'discovery' unearthed by this generous volume: there have been many excellent monographs and catalogues printed about this extraordinarily gifted artist who for the past half century has been creating art from found and constructed objects.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great artist thumbs his nose at high art
A lot of words been written lately about the unexpected revival of painting fueled by the current Gerhardt Richter painting retrospective captured in this book. It seems, according to some influential art scribes writing in the trail of this traveling exhibition, that the much heralded demise of painting, much like Mark Twains death, has been greatly exaggerated. Showcasing about 120 works over a 40-year period, this book is one of the most comprehensive retrospectives ever mounted about a contemporary painter in recent memory, and that by itself is a strong enough reason to buy it. However, it is what has been proven by Richters career and accomplishments, and unexpected stature in the art world (Sothebys recently dubbed him the most influential living artist in the world) and now driven home here, that makes this a-once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn some lessons about the contemporary art world. You see, Richter doesnt fit the formula for success that many art curators and influential critics and other art powers-that-be have carefully crafted in the rarified atmospheres of the upper crusts of the art world. In fact, Richter breaks every rule that often starts being pressed upon 18-year old art students and then is hammered home in reviews and lectures by many contemporary art critics and curators. Rules like you better have your own recognizable style! or only new is good and the oddest rule of all: painting is dead! But Richter is not only a painter in an era forced to focus on video artists, performance stars and PhotoShop wonders, but also Richter wanders from style to style with an ease and speed that makes this book a lesson on half a dozen art movements of the last century beautifully continued onto the current one. Thumb through the pages here and youll soon discover that Richter is as much as ease with photorealism some ultra sharp and some foggy in detail -- as he is with pure abstraction and with romantic paintings of pretty clouds and scenic waterfalls. This is an artist who is not just happy with thumbing his nose at the well-enforced rule that a good artist has to have a clearly identifiable style and do something new, but who also seems intent on destroying the other forced formulas of the modern art world: he copies other artists works, works directly from photographs, blah, blah, blah all sins that would make all my art professors and most art critics sigh in disgust. But above all, Richter paints, and he paints in a time when painting has been dismissed as ailing and ancient. New is good, technology is good painting is dead. Why does Richter paint? Doesnt he get it? NOPE!! Its because it is all about painting! And managing to make fools of critics who forget that their job is to follow the artist not to lead the arts. What those who consider painting an ailing form will never understand (mostly because they are not painters), is that Richter cant and wont stop painting, because through his veins runs the same intoxicating venom that fueled their ancestral kin in the caves of Altamira and which will continue to drive painters long after todays critics and curators are forgotten dust. This book shouts: Art does not have to be new to be good, and technology is not the only venue to deliver great new contemporary art - it also continues to prove that painting will never die.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine Art, Well Published
Gerhard Richter is one of the finest Pop artists of the 20th century. ("Pop" because he is highly non-ideological, even depicting ideological subjects in a completely neutral fashion. His works are plain-old nice to look at.) This book is a beautiful representation of his work, chock-full of his painting, from his earliest works to his most recent, printed nicely in full color. It is specifically the catalog for the exhibit of his works at MOMA in early 2002 (which this reviewer attended, with great delight), but the exhibition was so broad, with a wide range of paintings across Richter's full career, the number of paintings in this book is satisfyingly broad.2-0 out of 5 stars beautiful pictures, questionable text
This was a gorgeous show, but kind of conservative -- made Richter into the new "master" of painting, sidelines all his weirder and more "conceptual" work. And why does Robert Storr have to try so hard to put himself at the center of everything?? I saw the Richter show in SF around 1990, so no, this is NOT "the frist American retrospective." And Storr's dismissive (and often really uninformed) treatment of other critics (especially German critic Benjamin Buchloh, who's written on Richter for like, decades) shows what a limited writer and scholar Storr really is. But for better or worse, the pictures are great, and a lot of the other material is really good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Expanded Biography of Robert Rauschenberg
'Notes to accompany an exhibition' would be a fitting title for this book for those who are unaware of Mary Lynn Kotz' revised/updated biography of Robert Rauschenberg as they currently enjoy the spectacular traveling exhibition of his works, COMBINES, currently filling the generous spaces of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.Though the accompanying exhibition catalogue/book COMBINES, also available through Amazon.com, touches on many aspects of Rauschenberg's life, Kotz is a bit more conversational and adds to the art history aspect of the painter's life by a broader survey of his output.

4-0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive work yet for Monsieur Pissarro
This massive collection of three large hardbacks is the best Camille Pissarro resource yet, featuring an image on nearly every page, and often times 5 or 6 per page.As the title of the book suggests, this set is devoted to Pissarro's paintings, both rare and well-known.Many of his earlier works from the 1850's and 60's are a highlight fans and scholars should enjoy. The earlier paintings steal the show from the later works that made Pissarro an impressionist icon.Missing are many of Pissarro's beautiful sketches and simple drawings, though many are sprinkled in wherever they might fit according to the paintings chronologically discussed.A "Works on Paper" volume should be the next edition Joachim Pissarro (ancestor to the painter) authors, for it is desperately needed. The exorbitant price of this set inhibits a great deal. The price could be cut in half if the French text were removed from the book entirely (this work features half-and-half pages of English and then French translation of the verbiage -- a rather unnecessary frill that nearly doubles the page count). The first book is devoted to biography and timelines, incorporating documents and photographs of Pissarro and his family; some photographs are truly beautiful and offer previously unseen windows into his family life. The remaining two books are devoted to painting-by-painting critiques, by year, and thereby theme (from landscapes to peasants to city scenes). There are several appended indexes in each of the three books that are helpful, including a large bibliography.Though lacking, I feel, is an index of work titles; for those wishing to find a particular work you have no choice but to skim the pages in hopes that you will come across it.It's a big, extremely heavy literary summary of one of art history's most unappreciated artists. This work will undoubtedly remain unappreciated and scarce as well, and what a shame, it's beautiful. ... Boy Scout campouts, backyard barbecues, Christmas trees, cheerful barbers: no artist quite converted slice-of-life realism into idealized portraits of the American dream as ably as Norman Rockwell (1894-1978), whose distinguished career art historian Laura Claridge captures just as ably in this welcome biography.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars a story about pure determinitaion and persistance
This book gets a solid three stars for its interesting subject matter and honest approach in storytellng.2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting subject let down by the writing style
I opened this book greatly anticipating the read only to be disappointed by the author.I gave 2 stars for subject, 0 stars for the writing. She spent so much time exploring every relative from his distant past as well as someone only confused with a distant past relative that by the time she got down to Norman you had dug though many other Rockwells, which really didin't add to your knowledge of who Norman really was. Also the writing style took away from the subject matter. The style was so different than what you would expect to hear from Norman Rockwell himself. He was a "Regular Joe" and this is written so that you have to dig through the flowery phrasing to get to the meat of the idea.Instead of spending my time enjoying the story, I was working through the writing style.I expected a book on this subject to be a reflection of the man.It is too bad this author felt the need to impress with her turn of a phrase instead of letting her subject make the impression.I'm surprised an editor didn't red pencil a good part of the manuscript and give notes as to phrasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A difficult story very well told
After reading Claridge's bio on Norman Rockwell, I had a far greater sense of what made the man tick.Claridge explains in great detail Rockwell's self-doubts, insecurities, goals, and personal needs.Rockwell's struggles between practicing "fine" arts and illustration lived with him his entire life, and Claridge gives insight behind the cause of those struggles. The book also succeeded in describing the art world Rockwell inhabited, his influences, and his family relationships.Claridge's Rockwell comes across as an extremely humane man, trying to be as nice as possible to all who crossed his path, while keeping a protective shield around him, so as not to interfere with his artistic productivity. As someone brought up in the television generation, I also appreciated Claridge explaining the important and influential role The Saturday Evening Post played within day-to-day middle class American life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent on picasso's early years
of course some elements are lost forever, but it's worth contemplating these early years of picasso and to realize how much he had accomplished by say, 1905. my own image of him has tended to dwell on him as an old man doing a certain style of work...but he was (to put it crudely) young a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings to life the great artist's first 25 years
I respond as a general reader and can attest that reading this work was very much like engaging in a talk with an erudite and witty and sympathic art loving friend.I say engaging as Mr Richardsom anticipates questions and provides explanations. He is also revealing, at least to my mind, about many of the important figures of the early 20th century, such as Gertrude Stein, but as well, the social and artistic revolutions that were occuring. Picasso himself, however, is determinedly apolitical. The illustrations are useful, plentiful and conveniently located adjacent to the text. Chapters may stand on their own - for example Chapter 28 "Summer at Gosol" has many interesting features that show the artist's creative energy and source of inspiration at the time, the relationship with Ferdinande contrasted with his admiration for a ninety year old patriarch of the tiny mountain village, there perilous journey by mule in and out of Gosol, the atmosphere and the creative joy that Picasso experiences, not to mention the breakthough in his work that occurs at this time. The paperback is sturdily bound and overall, as a read, I found the "story", if you will, a most engaging read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Biography
There should be no doubt that the first two volumes of Richardson'sPicasso can be ranked alongside Ellman on both Wilde and Joyce or withMichael Holroyd's bio of Lytton Strachey. If a biographer loves his subjectthen that is no bad thing. Richard Ellman wrote his bios quite clearly inthe style of his subjects and by so doing brought us closer to them.Ellmanwas obviously completely mesmerised by Oscar Wilde thus the greater thetragedy.Read more

    Editorial Review

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) may not have been a handsome man, but he was an exceptional painter of himself. This sumptuous catalog, published to coincide with the exhibition of his self-portraits at the National Gallery in London, has glossy reproductions of all the paintings and etchings from the show, plus copies of works that are long lost and some not released by the galleries or private collectors who own them. The images are all thoroughly annotated to elucidate their history, and the scholarship is impressive, being mostly drawn from the Rembrandt Research Project, which for years has been working with a combination of x-ray technology and patient research to ascertain the age of the pictures and confirm the identity of their painter. This is not easy work: Rembrandt had many pupils, and he encouraged them to copy his own self-portraits as practice, leading to the unusual situation of a host of Rembrandt self-portraits not actually painted by the master himself. The findings of the project have been contentious, with paintings unexpectedly relegated or elevated through reappraisal. What shines through, though, is the sheer diversity of Rembrandt's genius: the early paintings and etchings in which he turns to a mirror to study expression; the periods of dressing up variously as an Oriental potentate, a soldier, an artisan, and St. Paul; and the famous trilogy of self-portraits painted in his final year that seem to show a man old beyond his years. The catalog also contains a selection of works by his pupils Gerrit Dou and Samuel van Hoogstraten and essays by Rembrandt scholars that seek to revise the somewhat romantic conceit that the series is some sort of spiritual autobiography. 5-0 out of 5 stars The autobiography as a series of masterpieces
Rembrandt tells his own story as a series of self- portraits. He traces his life from early youth to sad old age. He presents himself posing as if he understands the self can be a social construct. He creates great masterpieces including the Frick self- portrait where he sits as master and ruler , king of the world of art. He in telling his story looks deeply into his soul and traces a single life as no other painter before or since has. Even his great countryman Van Gogh cannot in his hair and soul raising self- portraits touch the depth and broad humanity of the Rembrandt self - portrait and soul .This is human art at its highest, and most inspiring. Who reads this book reads a great painter and great soul, one of mankind's greatest gifts to itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Master
It's about time that I found a (good) book on this subject. Rembrandts self-portraits (I feel) are of his most important work. The quality of the prints are wonderful...unlike 90% of the art related books floating around. The color reproduction is more accurate than most. This is a must have forany fan of Rembrandt...or for any true lover of painting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book on the self portraits of the master.
This book is facinating. It includes three good and fairly dry essays on the topic of Rembrandt's self portraits. More interesting are the prints of all the works that are considered his self portraits, and the detailedcommentary on these works. The prints are very good and quite useful forthe lover of Rembrandt. ... Read more

This is one of the most beautiful coffe table books I have ever seen.It is a compliation of the work of a genius, and seethes with human tension. What a wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful coffee table book & conversation piece
I received this book as a gift.I can't tell you how many times at a party or get-together at our home someone has picked this up, and then it has become the topic of conversation. The book gets passed around the entire night because everyone wants to look at it, and once someone starts flipping through the pages they simply can't put it down because they want to look at every image.Several of the photos are of celebrities, but they are somewhat disguised.Example: Cindy Crawford made up as a man.It is fun to do a "double take" as you try to guess who some of the subjects are.As always, Herb Ritts' images are masterpieces. This was a wonderful gift.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag of Photographs
This catalogue of the retrospective of Ritts' work in the mid 90's at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston by its very nature has a lot of photographs that are included in previous volumes: many of the nudes, the African photos, the series called Duo and "celebrity portraits." Unlike many celebrity photographers, Ritts was able to create photographs that rarely if ever are duplicates of either his or other artists' work. You get a good sense of that from looking at all of the small copies of all the photos published at the end of this volume. That is no small accomplishment. Many of the nudes and/or erotic photographs have been around for so long and reproduced so often that they have almost become cliches. For example, the series of "Fred With Tires." These show up in calendars, refrigerator magnets, posters ad nauseam. The nine photographs of Bill T. Jones, one of which graces the cover of this hefty volume, should be called "Eunuch, I-IX." The poor man has been castrated by the stroke of an airbrush. I assume we are politically rather than anatomically correct here. This show was clearly no repetition of theMapplethorpe Exhibit in Cincinnati!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for every Parrish fan!
I bought this book and I never regret of getting another Parrish art book again. This artbook is excellent with deep details of Parrish's way of study through his paintings.Theories based on his view of perspective and composition, it is something great to read about! However, one little thing I personally find missing is the "Dream Days" series, that is missing from this artbook and should have been included.Otherwise, get the book and you'll fall in love with Parrish blue all over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Parrish fans!
This book is excellent! It has one of the best Maxfield Parrish selected works.A lot of prints and images for you to be inspired all over again. It also contains pages of great readings, such as a section about Parrish's perspective theory and theory. It also show close-ups of Parrish's studies. It is a great read! However, the only thing disappoints me is the absence of the "Dream Days" series.Other than that, get it and you won't regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!
This is real art. These covers are traditional Americana as it was or at least should have been in the America Norman Rockwell so loved. Study each of these works and you'll be rewarded with an innumerable collection of tiny "extras" this master hid in his paintings. This is a great gathering of very fine and highly charming visual stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
To say that you can spend hours browsing through this wonderful collection is an understatement. This is a book that can be savored over a lifetime.5-0 out of 5 stars A Collector's Item
If you can only have one Norman Rockwell book, look no further. This is the quintessential Norman Rockwell. You can spend hours and hours looking at the illustrations and still not fully grasp all the subtle nuances -like the cameo paintings within the painting; the relections in the mirror;the advertisements in the folded newspapers; and so on. I have only foundone inconsistency. In "The Clock Mender" some areas in thepainting make an abrupt departure from his trademark quasi-realistic style. It reminds me of Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon". WasRockwell cleverly introducing "Surrealism" into this particularpainting, in an inverted Salvador Dali sort of way? Or was the originalpainting simply damaged and then retouched by someone else? It would makedelightful reading if Mr Finch, or anyone else, could offer anexplanation.Read more

Pablo Ruiz y Picasso worked in a remarkable number of media. His drypoint prints look like they were made by a man enraged, or more likely Spanish. These are some of his linocuts, obviously made by the same hand.
