1-0 out of 5 stars Very Poorly Written
This book is very poorly written. It also does not adequately discuss estimating materials.

3-0 out of 5 stars Broad Outlook on Interior Products
This book is a good reference for anyone who is currently designing or building a luxury home, but for a general education on construction interiors, this is not the book. There are many references to the latestproducts, which include both color and feature description that will bequickly outdated. Most of the discussion centers around materials thatwould be used in an affluent home rather than your typical familyresidence, and product descriptions focus on the unique product, not thetypical.Dimensions for comfortable clearance and layout hints are usefulfor residential layout, but the commercial references are very limited. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If Think the Arts don't matter in school? You better think again!
If you think the Arts don't matter anymore, I'm here to tell you to THINK again.
4-0 out of 5 stars A leading path
With a sometimes harsh style sometimes subjective, Mr. Jensen provides us with a leading path to make a coherent relation between the brain an it's development and the education in arts. Not very detailed with the ideas and paradigms but effective to motivate our curiosity in the field. With the arts education in the middle of a crucial crisis in the U.S., the "new idea" (for the positivist people) of a direct effect of the arts education in the development of high cognitive skills, provide a solid fundamental for the importance of this matter. At least, is a very serious proposal, well supported by researchers in the field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best ballet pocket dictionary, I've ever used !
I have had ballet studios and educational school for many years. This little unpretencious dictionary has an amazing content. It is full of steps and drawings with the correct ballet terminology, which is carefully explained.

4-0 out of 5 stars Body guide for art
Very good surce of material for developing paints, draws and even sculpture.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures, not much information
I was looking for a book that would give me real understanding of the way that muscles connect to bones and how they work in motion. This book doesn't do that, and some of the drawings of muscles are so stylized as to be almost useless -like the drawing of muscles of the shoulder on page 103, which seems to have been compressed vertically simply because it looks cooler that way.
4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, could use morefull body shots showing face
The photos and book are beautiful.I am happy with the book in that regard. Also it has a wealth of information necessary for a solid education in figure drawing. The transparent overlays of muscle over skeletal structure is great.I would have liked to have seen more full body shots, head to toe, with faces pointed towards the viewer.Really though, it is an invaluable addition to my artistic reference library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 8th Edition:
This book is, as far as I can tell, the same as the 8th Edition. The only difference is the cover of the book. Page numbers are the same, pictures are all the same.I accidentally purchased the wrong book, but turned out it worked just fine and I paid 1/10th of the price.

2-0 out of 5 stars too much highlighting
From the outside, the book appeared to be in great condition, but when I opened it, it was full of highlighting on almost every line of every page.I guess I will not be able to sell it back at a reasonable price.Had I known that it was full of highligting, I probably would not have purchased it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for every metalsmith / jewelry designer.
In this volume Oppi Untracht offers an excellent overview of metal jewelry making. The seemingly limitless information offered is technically precise, and beautifully illustrated.
4-0 out of 5 stars Overview versus Technical Know How
This is a good book for those wanting a broad overview of all aspects of jewellery making with metals. It contains good illustrations of finished pieces; however, it is not a book that gives step by step instructions. So, if you are looking for a 'how to' book, look elsewhere.Otherwise it is a useful reference but not essential.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last, a Tribute to an Art Dealer!
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has produced yet another fine curatorial statement with their exhibition 'Cezanne to Picasso: Ambroise Vollard, Patron of the Avant-Garde' and fortunately the accompanying catalogue is as bold and beautiful as the exhibition itself. The concept of discussing artists of international stature from the stance of the man who gave their careers the jumpstart needed is unique and valuable and is a tribute to the work that art dealers around the world perform in assisting artists in their career paths.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is a masterpiece by Hirst and Barnbrook
What a tour de force! This is one of the most beautifully designed books money can buy. Jonathan Barnbrook created (together with Damien Hirst) a timeless masterpiece of book design. If you want to see what is possible in this medium, you want to own this book. It is hauntingly beautiful, filled with amazing interactive pieces bringing you as close to Hirst's thinking and work as printed matter can get you. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Daring Realm of Damien Hirst
Damien Hirst is one of the most creative and influential contemporary artists. This is a wonderful book that examines the whole of Damien Hirst's career and all of his beautifully shcoking ideas. This book itself is an amazing work of art.It contains not only many wonderful full color panels, but it has all kinds of extremely interesting interactive pages that mimic some of Hirst's work.I highly suggest this wonderful book that does justice to this incredible artist. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Readers involved in comic history, evolution and art simply must have
Any involved in the comics must have ART OUT OF TIME: UNKNOWN COMICS VISIONARIES, 1900-1969: it celebrates the lesser-known work of Bob Powell, Astan MacGovern, Boody Rogers and others who proved eccentric but influential comic visionaries before the rose of underground comics in the late 1960s. These artists created their own versions of western, romance, humor and horror genres and worked within the confines of popular comics of their times to provide visionary works. Some became famous, others remained obscure. ART OUT OF TIME reprints complete comic book and strip stories: many appear here for the first time since their first appearance. A thematic organization allows for quick access while surveys of pre-underground stars makes for a winning collection. Another big plus: the strips appear in full color, capturing all the nuances of the originals and losing nothing in translation. Readers involved in comic history, evolution and art simply must have ART OUT OF TIME.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
If you are an artist, have an interest in art or even just like to read thought provoking quotes then you could do a lot worse than have this on your shelf. The book is collection of conversations, thoughts, writings. There isn't much of a structure to it - more a random collection although the index helps somewhat. It lends itself to just opening the book at a random page and reading whats there. It contains one salient point after the other on the how's, whys and wherefores of painting, drawing and sculpture. This book should be on every artists shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Art," before commercialism took over.
Finally a review of art, for the sake of art, without becoming cluttered by commercial concerns.Paint color, composition, line...The book is written as a painting with no particular beginning, middle, or end.It needs to be absorbed as a whole to fully appreciate its contents. The pedantic English can tire but it does not subtract from the freshness of the message and the pleasure it provides to every student of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars an eternal favorite

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best on the Graphic Design Industry
The Best. It was so good, it inspired me to come back and write my first book review ever. This book answered numerous questions I had and confirmed just as many assumptions I had about the Graphic Design Industry. Shaughnessy has done a huge service to the graphic design world by writing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential that any graphic designer operating independently have this practical reference
Graphic designers love to talk about sources of inspiration, but less willing to discuss the basics on locating work, pricing, and how to handle irate or non-paying clients - so it's essential that any graphic designer operating independently have this practical reference. It's one thing to be creative; it's another to manage its business needs. How To Be A Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul provides tested strategies for setting up, running and promoting a studio - and working with clients and their common problems.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for graphic designers, must read for all design students
If you are in commercial art field, regardless whether you are in graphic design or not, you must read this book. It tell you everything you wish your design school teachers had told you about the business of being a commercial artist. As an art school instructor myself, I made this book into a recommended reading material for my graduating illustration majors. Just cross the words "design" in this book and write over "illustration" (or animation, advertising, or whichever commercial art occupation), and more than 95% of it works. It is because this book does not teach you the tricks and gimmicks, but teaches you the philosophy of the business of being a commercial artist. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good information, but lacking in many areas
The book does provide detailed footnotes as it is a series of essays where the writer of each "chapter" presents their viewpoint and analysis. However, this book provides no tables or charts to support any of the analysis or discussions presented. It would have been very helpful if there were a table or chart comparing each nation's "innovation" in each category described in this book, examples: armored warfare, strategic bombing, carrier development, etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars Military Innovation in the Interwar Period
This book is a necessary for those who want to understand the relationship between development of technology and military innovation. It is not an easy book to read, but contains tremendous amount of information along with accurate historical records. Must for military tacticians and historians alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Addition to the Study of the Inter-war Period
The acclaimed scholarly team of Williamson Murray and Allan R. Millett have edited an anthology of essays encompassing the technological innovations in weaponry during the 1920's and 1930's. These innovations span the research and developments of all the major belligerents that play a major role in the coming global conflict. Each scholar was instructed to compare and contrast his or her topic country with two other countries making this work not only a significant contribution in and of itself, but also a vital comparative study as well. In addition, the researchers were asked to structure their essays around three concepts: the strategic framework of the period, the organizational factors of the institutions under study, and the doctrinal framework of the services. Many of the contributing factors to victory and defeat in World War II are covered within the pages of this important work. Williamson Murray takes a look at "Armored Warfare: The British, French and German Experiences," and "Strategic Bombing: The British, American and German Experiences." Richard R. Muller examines "Close Air Support: The German British and American Experiences, 1918-1941." Geoffrey Till discusses "Adopting the Aircraft Carrier: The British, American, and Japanese Case Studies." But perhaps the most important chapter is Allan R. Millett's "Assault From the Sea: The Development of Amphibious Warfare Between the Wars-the American, British, and Japanese Experiences." Millett compared the development of amphibious doctrine in Japan, Britain, and the United States. The author concludes the U. S. led the way in amphibious warfare doctrine, initiating combined arms operations between air, sea and land that would prove to be a critical advantage in the pacific campaign. According to Millett, Japan started out impressively as was evident by its ever-expanding Pacific empire in the 1930's. Since every landing force became an isolated island garrison, however, Japan's whole amphibious program literally faded away. Great Britain, on the other hand, never had the economic resources necessary to implement a successful amphibious program. Millett concludes that factors such as budget and innovative foresight are vital contributing factors in technological innovation. The author is also quick to point out that in many cases, new weapons become obsolete as soon as hostilities begin. Generally, books of essays are usually disjointed and inconsistent. The guidelines and structure the editors have chosen have tied all the chapters in this book together nicely. This is arguably the best work on the inter-war period to emerge in years. Highly recommended. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as Expected, very disappointed!
Sadly I purchased this volume based upon other reader reviews. Although I have given it 3 stars- as the book production itself was very nice- oversize square small coffee table book, printed on high quality thick stock, with well printed art work- makes this volume attractive on the outside. The contents and sketchbook is rather a let down. 60% of the sketches are very crude and unattractive (even considering them just sketches from a sketchbook) and the remaining art being just okay, maybe there is 10-12 eye opening pieces. If your looking for inspiration or eye candy this is not your book

1-0 out of 5 stars Ever feel like you've been swindled?
I'm not an artist, but I do have a few tattoos. Just over 100 hours of custom work all done at the Smilin' Buddha in Calgary, Alberta. I've even managed to get 3 pictures of my work (one full page) in Paul Jefferies' vanity press book celebrating his 25 years in the industry.
1-0 out of 5 stars Crappy Bar napkin sketches
The following is an opinion for which we are all entitled: Although this book does tell you something about each artist and shows one sketch from each artist, it is more like a "Collection of bar napkin sketches". Most are of poor quality as if the artist could care less when he/she had drawn them and a very few are of some quality. As an award winning artist of over 35 years experience, I felt it was a complete waste of money as far as being helpful to further my talents or to "just plain enjoy". I would never show such "doodles" in a book to represent what I can do. For something to glance through to kill time, I would say fine, go nuts. Overall....I AM NOT IMPRESSED! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking collection of Mapplethorpe's sex picture
This collection of pictures is bound in a good quality cover and printed on a glossy paper of reasonable quality.2-0 out of 5 stars One word: Ouch
You can always debate whether this book is "art" or not, but thefact is I am worried about what happened to some of the subjects. Helmut? Are you okay?I think Mapplethorpe wanted to shock, and he did, but Ifound the pictures had too much pain in them to be appreciated.I wasdeadened to what Mapplethorpe wanted to say, if he wanted to say anythingat all.Ouch, ouch, ouch.

3-0 out of 5 stars very good book
