Finally getting around to writing a review on Bev Doolittle's books; this one and and her other book from 1990,"The Art of Bev Dolittle".Two of my major intrests are Birding(and Nature) and virtually any kind of puzzle (Optical Illusion,Mazes,Take Apart,Rubik's,Mathematical Puzzles, etc.)I also am fascinated with the West and have spent time in New Mexico,Arizona and California;birding and travelling. The Wild West, Cowboys and Indian cultures all intrest me,provide me with many books for reading, photos and art.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" Book for Troiani Fans and Militaria Collectors!
OK, I am admittedly a huge fan of Don Troiani's amazing artwork and own several of his art prints and all of his prior books. Even then, however, I initially questioned the purchase of his latest book on American battles.Wow ..... am I ever glad I went ahead with the purchase! This new book is intended as a "best of" his artwork and places my favorite Troiani paintings in one single reference volume. If you are a new Troiani fan, or new to the history field, the book is also quite a value considering the huge amount of artwork contained inside.
5-0 out of 5 stars From the mind of the artist
Having admired the artwork of Mr. Troiani throughout the years, I've come to recognize certain aspects in each piece. This new book delves into the mindset he had as the research was complete, but the image from his mind had to be put into motion then to canvas. Seeing the photos of modeling sessions and rough sketches expands the experience so much more than just taking in the image. He not only paints a scene with his brush but also with his words when decribing finding the right looking model, tree, field, gun and clothing. What I especially like is finding out who some of the models have been, from the sculptor Ron Tunison to noted collectors of Civil War items. Anyone can be envious of his artistic talent, but when it comes to authenticy, research and pains-taking accuracy no one can compare to Mr. Troiani and this he shares in this wonderful compilation!
2-0 out of 5 stars Most of the same...almost
As much as I admire the artwork and historical research that goes into Troiani's paintings I'm very disappointed with Don Troiani's latest book AMERICAN BATTLES, The art of the nation at war,1754-1865. The best part of the book is the inclusion of some new Revolutionary War and Civil War paintings and figure studies. I wish Troiani's earlier books would have contained an Artist's Comments section as well as photos of his models and some in progress work. If this had been the case there would have been very little that was "fresh" in this volume. In addition to text for the battle paintings there normally is text for the single figure studies as well as the artifacts from Troian's collection. This time around the figure studies and artifacts are merely "filler" without any descriptive text. I found the title AMERICAN BATTLES a little misleading. The period of 1784-1859 is covered in a mere 7 pages with only one painting really having any text aside from a title.Though I own all of the books featuring Mr. Troiani's work, one can only enjoy a repackaged product for so long. I'd prefer a 4-5 year period between books in order to get a product that contains newer rather than older works. The 2 star rating may be a bit harsh, but there's just not enough to get excited about here.~Gary ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If a man smiles at you...
I first heard of Tibor Kalman while browsing a copy of "Interview", just to learn that it was a tribute. Sometime later, I found a smiling bookcover looking at me. I bought it. I was waiting for the bus and started to read it... I could not put it down again. I read textes, subtitles, infos, even the small characters of the work reproduced. It was not enough. It made me regain the somehow lost faith in design, showing me how humour, money and a cause could be combined together with surprising results.5-0 out of 5 stars In your face
Kalman was a fascinating artist, but above all, he was down to earth. He told it like it is.That's why people found his work disturbing and cutting edge at the same time. His images and ideas have the power to change how people think. As an artist, he was vastly underrated, but his art made important comments about popular culture. He fits right in with Warhol, Rauschenberg, et. al.This is a book worth many times its price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even better when you re-read it!
I left a review of the hardcover a long time ago.I'm reviewing the paperback because I actually bought a 2nd copy of the book (one to keep untouched and the other to read several times). And now that I've gone through the book for the umpteenth time, I want to add more thoughts to my last review...Read more

I've purchased several S.S.B. books in the past because I love her work, but I was frustrated with these books because they were exclusively picture books that revealed nothing about the artist herself or the life she was living. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Review of the Artist and her Unique Talent
Susan Seddon Boulet - A Retrospective, by Michael Babock, beautifully recounts the life of an internationally-known Bay Area artist, while a well-chosen selection of her paintings and sketches documents the many changes in her style, her use of new techniques and materials and, ultimately, her inner struggle withthe concepts of life, death andresurrection as she courageously battles the cancer that ultimately claimedher life in April of 1997.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Expanded Biography of Robert Rauschenberg
'Notes to accompany an exhibition' would be a fitting title for this book for those who are unaware of Mary Lynn Kotz' revised/updated biography of Robert Rauschenberg as they currently enjoy the spectacular traveling exhibition of his works, COMBINES, currently filling the generous spaces of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.Though the accompanying exhibition catalogue/book COMBINES, also available through Amazon.com, touches on many aspects of Rauschenberg's life, Kotz is a bit more conversational and adds to the art history aspect of the painter's life by a broader survey of his output.

4-0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive work yet for Monsieur Pissarro
This massive collection of three large hardbacks is the best Camille Pissarro resource yet, featuring an image on nearly every page, and often times 5 or 6 per page.As the title of the book suggests, this set is devoted to Pissarro's paintings, both rare and well-known.Many of his earlier works from the 1850's and 60's are a highlight fans and scholars should enjoy. The earlier paintings steal the show from the later works that made Pissarro an impressionist icon.Missing are many of Pissarro's beautiful sketches and simple drawings, though many are sprinkled in wherever they might fit according to the paintings chronologically discussed.A "Works on Paper" volume should be the next edition Joachim Pissarro (ancestor to the painter) authors, for it is desperately needed. The exorbitant price of this set inhibits a great deal. The price could be cut in half if the French text were removed from the book entirely (this work features half-and-half pages of English and then French translation of the verbiage -- a rather unnecessary frill that nearly doubles the page count). The first book is devoted to biography and timelines, incorporating documents and photographs of Pissarro and his family; some photographs are truly beautiful and offer previously unseen windows into his family life. The remaining two books are devoted to painting-by-painting critiques, by year, and thereby theme (from landscapes to peasants to city scenes). There are several appended indexes in each of the three books that are helpful, including a large bibliography.Though lacking, I feel, is an index of work titles; for those wishing to find a particular work you have no choice but to skim the pages in hopes that you will come across it.It's a big, extremely heavy literary summary of one of art history's most unappreciated artists. This work will undoubtedly remain unappreciated and scarce as well, and what a shame, it's beautiful. ... This is a beautifully presented, simply and elegantly written book of Wolf Kahn's work, of which it is hard not to be a great fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
This book is beautifully presented, with a large number of colour plates of his oil and pastel paintings.I really enjoyed the sensitive, well written and interesting story by Wolf about his travels across America and his findings along the way.He shows its not necessarily the subject that makes the painting but how you treat it and Wolf is a master of atmosphere and luminous colur to the max.

Editorial Review

In the 1960s, the American artist Lee Bontecou was heralded as one of the most important young artists of her time. Painstakingly crafted from castoffs--Army surplus and canvas conveyor belts from a neighboring laundry--her wall reliefs evoked a fearsome sci-fi world of black holes and bared teeth, a mysterious doom-filled terrain no one had ever seen before. In the mid-'70s, however, Bontecou disappeared from the art scene, declining to take part in exhibitions. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading
This is not a review of the book but of Amazon's marketing of it. The first screen and header describes the book as HARDCOVER, includes a highlight that the Museum of Contemporary Art is the best bargain, when in fact theirs is a softcover.

3-0 out of 5 stars re: the photographic record
I just studied both the book and the exhibition in Chicago. The works are wonderful first hand. The book is a nice supplement in some ways, the quality of the prints is good on the surface, and there are some contextual pictures of studio environment etc.But the book is enormously disappointing in one very important way: Most of the photographs of works in the first section are taken from only one angle, head on, and lit evenly so they give *no* idea of the geometry and depth of the works. The actual works have very dramatic physical depth, but the photographs make them look as flat as paintings. It's great that there is at least an inventory presented here, unfortunately, this book missed the rare opportunity to definitively fill the need for a photographic record of Bontecou's major works. It would have been greatly improved with multiple angles or more informative lighting for the works that demand it.You still have to see an exhibition to really have any idea what her works are like. 5-0 out of 5 stars Catalog is a Wonderful Companion to the Exhibition
It is difficult to review the exhibition catalog without first taking in the Lee Bontecou survey at one of the museum exhibitions currently traveling the US.Unfortunately the exhibition will travel to only three museums in the three largest cities in the US, yet most of the works come from public and private collections throughout the country.Luckily, readers get to see all of the pieces in a carefully written, scholarly book full of full-color reproductions, several essays about the artist and her process, essays about the artist and surrounding influences from (and in) art history, and a detailed exhibition checklist with thumbnail photos of each work in the full exhibition. There are over 150 works in the traveling exhibition presented in a catalog of 240 pages. The photographs are standard for a catalog presentation but photographs of the sculptural works may not give accurate renderings of scale or detail; once again, this is a catalog and not a coffee table book of a few of the artist's better-known works. For just a few dollars more than the softcover, get the hardbound edition; you will want to keep this book for a lifetime. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Directed at the expert, fine for the fan, too!
I would like to add to the reviews below that this book is a pleasure to hold and to view because it is so well made.If there is any 'art' book that should be made for posterity it is the catalog raisonne of an artist. In this instance, the publisher has done the artist's audience a real service for, the book is beautifully printed and bound in Italy by Amilcare Pizzi; Italy seeming to have usurped Switzerland's place as the world's premier art book printer. The pages are thick and glossy and the reproduction is top notch.5-0 out of 5 stars Andy Warhol Prints
This 3rd edition of Andy Warhol Prints gives much information to someone who is interested in the various published and unpublished works which Warhol created. In addition to providing color photographs of the prints, the book gives details about the edition size and characteristics of each individual portfolio. This book will be quite useful for the Warhol fan, art students, as well as collectors of Warhol's work. It is the most definitive book of his prints available.

Editorial Review

The restoration of Michelangelo's magnificent frescoes in the Vatican's Sistine Chapel stirred up much controversy and debate among scholars, art historians, and art lovers alike. Originally painted in the late 15th century, it took restorers 14 painstaking years (from 1981 to 1995) to remove the centuries' worth of dust and decay that had obscured the frescoes' brilliant colors and intricate designs. In 250 gorgeous full-color photographs, this unique and beautiful volume presents Michelangelo's restored chapel--perhaps the greatest masterpiece of Renaissance art--in its entirety, from the Creation to the Last Judgment, both before and after cleaning. The only definitive study of the restoration process, this book is the next best thing to actually being there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure!
Being an admirer of the magnificent Michelangelo I am very pleased to have acquired this book. The pictures are beautifully printed. By the end of the book I wish to revisit the Sistine Chapel to view those parts printed in the book which I have obviously missed with my naked eyes. The details of the restoration work is an added bonus. To get the most of this book, please read it together with "Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling" by Ross King. You will not regret the experience. Michelangelo's frescoes are simply sublime!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning artistry, breathtaking color...
The photographs in this book are too good to be believed. I have never had an art book on the Sistine Chapel before that so moved me.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reproductions and very good text -- Truly Majestic
This is an absolutely superb book, largely because the reproductions of the frescoes are excellent and really capture the colors that you see when you visit the Chapel. I have found many art books disappointing, because they simply fail to capture the works they present.I first saw this book in an American bookstore after visiting the Sistine Chapel, and really thrilled to see if after looking at several other books where colors were much duller and the images simply not as sharp. In addition to its fine colors, the book provides many fine closeups of each individual section. The text is also very good, describing the subjects of the painting, the history behind the paintings, ansd also the recent restorstion. This is a must-have book! ... Boy Scout campouts, backyard barbecues, Christmas trees, cheerful barbers: no artist quite converted slice-of-life realism into idealized portraits of the American dream as ably as Norman Rockwell (1894-1978), whose distinguished career art historian Laura Claridge captures just as ably in this welcome biography.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars a story about pure determinitaion and persistance
This book gets a solid three stars for its interesting subject matter and honest approach in storytellng.2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting subject let down by the writing style
I opened this book greatly anticipating the read only to be disappointed by the author.I gave 2 stars for subject, 0 stars for the writing. She spent so much time exploring every relative from his distant past as well as someone only confused with a distant past relative that by the time she got down to Norman you had dug though many other Rockwells, which really didin't add to your knowledge of who Norman really was. Also the writing style took away from the subject matter. The style was so different than what you would expect to hear from Norman Rockwell himself. He was a "Regular Joe" and this is written so that you have to dig through the flowery phrasing to get to the meat of the idea.Instead of spending my time enjoying the story, I was working through the writing style.I expected a book on this subject to be a reflection of the man.It is too bad this author felt the need to impress with her turn of a phrase instead of letting her subject make the impression.I'm surprised an editor didn't red pencil a good part of the manuscript and give notes as to phrasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A difficult story very well told
After reading Claridge's bio on Norman Rockwell, I had a far greater sense of what made the man tick.Claridge explains in great detail Rockwell's self-doubts, insecurities, goals, and personal needs.Rockwell's struggles between practicing "fine" arts and illustration lived with him his entire life, and Claridge gives insight behind the cause of those struggles. The book also succeeded in describing the art world Rockwell inhabited, his influences, and his family relationships.Claridge's Rockwell comes across as an extremely humane man, trying to be as nice as possible to all who crossed his path, while keeping a protective shield around him, so as not to interfere with his artistic productivity. As someone brought up in the television generation, I also appreciated Claridge explaining the important and influential role The Saturday Evening Post played within day-to-day middle class American life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a brillant contemporary artist
Bill Viola is one of the most interesting artists working today. His workbrilliantly blends technology and spirituality and this collection of hiswritings provides a glimpse into his thought process.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant artist and thinker
It is so refreshing to read what an artist's work is about from their own point of view, and not from a critic's. This book takes that a step further, by including sketches, a plethora of quotes, and facsimiles ofViola's legendary notebooks. Unlike most new media/video artists, Violauses technology only to get beyond it, to provoke his audience to ponderthe larger questions in life. He is an extraordinary thinker as well as apioneering video artist. As an artist I find his writings -- and proof thathe's an ordinary human being, with a messy notebook -- incrediblyinspirational. The ideas in this book will keep you going for years. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This lavish but manageable book is the catalog for one of the most successful van Gogh exhibitions ever (at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., through January 3, 1999, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art from January 17, 1999, to April 4, 1999). Judging from the haunting, beautifully reproduced paintings and drawings in the book--which range from the iconic to the rarely seen--it is easy to see why hordes of people keep pressing through overcrowded galleries to get a glimpse of the originals. The ones here are all from the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, where most of Vincent's work resides. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the most original artist of his time
Vincent van Gogh is the artist who I feel I relate to most on a personal level. His demons are my demons. His yearning to some day find "the right girl" is my yearning. His spiritual faith in God is my spiritual faith. His weaknesses are my weaknesses. His strengths are my strengths. I'm very fond of van Gogh. He made many mistakes, including getting involved in a doomed love affair with a prostitute, or how he cut off his earlobe in a fit of anguish. Well, okay, I identify with him but that's something I've never been tempted to do haha. Vincent was a troubled and tormented and deeply under-appreciated artist in his day, only managing to sell one or two paintings in his life. Now he is among the very most popular. His works sell for many millions, even minor works. 5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT JOURNEY WITH VAN GOGH
One of the best pieces that I ever read explaining paintings along the different periods which were passed by Van Gogh. Also, it gives a complete ride through his life and personality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bought it despite... and liked it!
Well, after a few of the reviews below I fully expected this to be a big disappointment, but, as one of the negative reviewers put it, the book had to be owned. I'm a big fan of Mary Blair's work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Swell introduction
Although I note some of the other reviews of this book arenot too favorable, for me it's a very cool introduction to an artist of whom I had never heard.

4-0 out of 5 stars John Howes Art is Mythic and Magical
As one of the foremost fantasy illustrators of the past twenty years Canadian born John Howe has done more to define the look of Tolkien's world than almost any other illustrator (along with Alan Lee!). He captures in vibrant and dramatic images the grandeur and majesty of Middle Earth, in calendars and on book covers alike. But he is much more than just a visual interpreter of Tolkien's work, getting his big break in Time Life's: The Enchanted World series in the 1980s his art has graced the covers of some of the bestselling fantasy authors of today. He has illustrated books on myth, legend and fairy tale, he's even written and illustrated several enchanting children's books.
4-0 out of 5 stars Does Justice To The Artist
This book shows how it should be done.
