5-0 out of 5 stars Art at its best.
What can one say that has already not been said about Ansel Adams. I too am on the digital wave, but this book reminded me of what a pleasure making (art)a photograph can be. The information helped me to see my subjects from the negatives perspective. Very good to excellent for improving all of my photography.
5-0 out of 5 stars It is a bible
Read it once, and forget everything you get in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lear From the Master
Ansel Adams is arguably the finest technician in the history of photography. This book covers the art and science of creating the perfect negative - the vital ingredient in making a perfect print. This book does not disappoint. Ansel's genious lives through this and other books he helped write. This book is a valuable asset to any photographic library. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Binding Fell Apart
I noticed the review that said this book was worthy of "permanent display on your coffee table."Well, I don't think that will be possible with my book, as the binding fell apart after 6 months. The book has gotten a fair amount of use, but nothing out of the ordinary.I've since seen a similar problem with a couple of the display copies at bookstores (which is why they've been demoted to display copies). So I don't think this is an isolated problem. It seems like the book is so big that they didn't make a strong enough binding for it.So just a warning for this thinking of buying this book. The good news is that, on the advice of one of the reviews, I bought Colorado: Yesterday & Today to replace my copy of Colorado: 1870-2000.I agree that it is the better book and now it will be on permanent display on my coffe-table.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of permanent display on a coffee table
This book is excellent in look, feel, and quality. It is intriguing to see how much landscape has changed in 130 years. Many times for the better and many times for the worse. In every case it is very interesting to see two pictures side by side and compare 1870 with 2000.The photographer was very meticulous to capture every shot as closely as possible to the original perspective and frame, which really enhances the "then and now" feel of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearing Up the Confusion and Getting the Photo Details
There appears to be some confusion as all of the reviews of the original "Colorado 1870-2000" big book are credited to this, the paperback "Colorado 1870-2000 Revisited: The History Behind the Images".This book is a companion book to the original. It takes each photo set from the big book and goes into detail about the location, changes, and how Fielder acquired each photo. These are the things that, being left out of the original, made several people give the big book negative reviews. While it would have been nice (and certainly less expensive) to have everything in one volume, we now have the information for which those disappointed with the big book were looking. While the big book is a piece of coffee table art, the Revisited book fits neatly on your bookshelf, ready to be taken down to answer those questions posed by your friends perusing the big book.I take a bit of offense at having to have paid for two different books, but they belong together and I feel were money well spent; the big book for the beautiful photos and the revisited book for its entertaining and educational material. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good start
A few months ago I was visited by a particularly nasty strain of influenza. As I sat paralysed in an easy chair with everything that could possibly hurt hurting, I had to decide how to pass the time, since nobody in my family would agree to shoot me.I couldn't concentrate to read the tiny print in a book. The thought of television nauseated me.Only one thing would do.Tintin books!I used to collect and read Tintin books with my son about fifteen years ago, and hadn't read one in at least ten years. So I re-read them all, from Tintin In America to Tintin and the Picaros and they were wonderfully therapeutic.I then went on to order Tintin In the Land of the Soviets, Tintin In the Congo and Tintin and the Lake of Sharks. My interest in Tintin being re-awakened, I looked for commentary and analysis about Tintin and Herge, and came across Tintin, The Complete Companion.
5-0 out of 5 stars Only for the real Tintin fanatics
This book is an amazing source of information for the real Tintin fanatics. For those of us who love Tintin, but aren't really up there with the fanatic Tintin worshipers, it's a bit too much.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tintin shines !!!
The first Tintin book I read was in 1963 when I found a hardcover edition of 'Destination Moon' in our grade school library...I was 8 at the time and I found the book so interesting that it was hard to put down, you always want to know what happens next...I must have read this same book at least 10 times and always wondered "what happened when they got to the moon ??"...sadly this was the only copy of a Tintin book in our small library...Then in 1976 I happened in a small bookstore and just happened to ask if they had ever heard of Tintin (they hadn't) but they checked their catalouge for me and THERE IT WAS !!!...'Exploreers on the Moon'..for $1.98 !!!...and more Tintin books , I ordered it and others and have loved the books ever since...Both my kids have read them and my brothers too...OK...I saw this book on Amazon and of course had to have it and it is well worth the money with interesting facts, trivia and more Tintin stuff that I never knew....very well written and researched, with great art and photos...If you like Tintin , you will love this...and it is in hardcover too...I wish I had the 'Detination Moon' hardcover copy from my youth... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Uncommon Power of Common Things
Wall is a visual journey into the uncommon power and beauty of common things. Stones, leaves, a blade of grass. Rushes, thorns, the splash of water on a quiet rock. In the thoughtful hands of artist Andy Goldsworthy, these ordinary landscape artifacts are pressed, moved, shaped and juxtaposed, then left to melt back into earth over time. When viewing Goldsworthy's art, one thinks of the rapt attention of a child, who sees possibility in every fallen branch. Yet, the overall impression is philosophical in nature. Even the person who claims little understanding of art can find a way to enter in, especially with the help of Baker's essay. A beautiful read, a beautiful look.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another flight of imagination from inimitable Goldsworthy
Imagine that you're a giant playing with pebbles in your backyard. There's a big puddle nearby, and a lot of weeds. You idly pick up pebble after pebble, placing them gently one on top of the other, winding what ends up being a wall through the weeds until it gets to the edge of the puddle. That's the deliciously disconcerting feeling you'll get as you page through Andy Goldsworthy's "Wall."5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughts from a bent back
As one of the wallers involved in the building of Andy's wall at Storm King, I can honestly say that this book gives a really good insight into the ideas behind his work and some of the technicalities involved in its construction. The photography is wonderful and the text informative. This book is well worth a look, and so is the wall itself. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait
A must-have for all Hundertwasser enthusiasts. I ordered mine mid 2001, so escaped the price rise - it helped ease the financial pain, but I'd buy it anyway. It's not what I expected - lots of glossy prints, though there are plenty - but the catalog was an eye-opener - I never realised just how broad his ouvre was, and am now chasing other goodies for the collection. The biographical info was very interesting too - it gives a good insight into very creative man.

The amazing world of Boris Vallejo is condensed down into this picture book of god like bodies and fairytail fantasy scenes.Shown are some of his movie work, clothing ad work, Franklin Mint and his most favorite subject, his wife, Julie Bell.5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Artworks
I love this book because it has lots of beautiful paintings from the author. I like this book more than the Titans. The artworks from Titans doesn't stand out or look as clean as the ones from in this book. This book has pictures ranging from mythical beings and animals, to futuristic designs. The disadvantage about this book is the non appealing art cover and its high price. Overall, it's an excellent reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection. All out perfection.
I have no idea what the person from dallas is talking about. I loved this work of Boris. I espsecially loved the Sections on the mythical beasts, and women of wonder. This is my best Boris book yet. I challenge any artist tomatch boris in the worlds of magic and fantasy. A definate must for allboris and fantasy fans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Real women have curves
If you are not a fan of Frank Cho by now then I suggest you take a look at all of his works. Liberty Meadows, Shanna and more are in this great book and they don't shy away from showing what makes them stand out from all the other artists' rendition of how you can illustrate a woman in action fighting the good fight.

2-0 out of 5 stars Same ol', same ol'
Don't get me wrong, I love Frank Cho's art, humor and style. However, if you are a fan and have collected his previous books and comics, there's really nothing new included here to make this volume worth purchasing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Examples of Illustrations
I haven't looked through Frank Cho's comic books enough to really say if I like them or not, but I have seen examples of his work here and there and decided a book focusing on anatomy would be useful to me. (since that is a weak point in my art) I was somewhat disappointed when I received the book to find out that it contained only black and white illustrations. The beautiful cover is the only color throughout the book as well as the only painting. The best part I found were the comparisons between original graphite drawings and more finalized inks of some illustrations, there just were not enough like that.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is excellent!
A good introduction to Muller-Brockmanns work, the book takes us from his very early works to later exhibitions and poster design. It even mentions 'Grid Systems', which I am a firm disciple of. Graphic Design is a subject of which to have strong oppionions and Lars Muller has just that. I enjoyed his comments in the preface which were valid and sound. All in all an important walk through past design, which should stay contemparay for times to come. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for adult Clive Barker fans, old and new.
A great book which shows how multi talented Clive Barker really is. These various paintings contained in this volume range from one extreme to another, including, sexual extremities which adults should be aware of so they can keep it out of children's reach. Some of the paintings feature images from Barker's Abarat world, of which, I wish there were more! It's a beautiful book and a book to be treasured.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've seen the other side....through Clive Barker.
In this book, Clive Barker shows off a selection of his artwork full of color and wonder. Angels, Demons, Sorcerors, and Landscapes from the wildest imaginations and the darkest regions of the mind. This book gave me inspiration for a couple of my more recent works of art. This book is a perfect addition for anyones personal library who loves fantastic pieces of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Favorite Book
It's breathtakingly gorgeous. $50 at full price, you can get it for about $20 online. If you have no idea what it is, it's paintings. After about the first fifty paintings I was astonished with the endless vivid creativity. I kept flipping page after page, past another fifty and then another, not taking the time to absorb everything, just flipping through the book for the first time... It's just painting after vivid painting, some folding out of the book for more space but still feeling limited by the edges of the page. After yet another fifty paintings go by, I realize this is something special, something amazing, something unbelievable, and I still have fifty more paints to flip through, and I still have to go back and take the time to really look at the 250 paints I only skimmed. If these were still-lifes, or portraits, or anything from real life, it would be like any other art book, but all of it's from Clive Barker's head. It really feels like discovering a modern day Van Gogh/Dali before the rest of the world. I've read almost all of Clive's work, novels that have their flaws but always demonstrate a singular imagination. Visions of Heaven and Hell proves that his imagination can not be over estimated. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nan Goldin's Magnum Opus
DEVIL'S PLAYGROUND is a lap-heavy, huge tome of the creative photographs of Nan Goldin, many of which have never before been published.Goldin is know throughout the museums of the world as a photographer who knows no barriers for her subject matter: AIDS victims, mental patients, transvestites, poor families, rural landscapes, constructed still lifes - these are but a few of the categories studied and captured by Goldin. For this full color volume Goldin selected the layout and the progression of sections, making the flow of the book even more fascinating; the book is one where she is both artist and curator and the result is a powerhouse of statement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shows the Andy Warhol Museum collection
This is a thoughtful book which does not leave much out until you get to the index on pages 740-742.The pages are long horizontally, usually presenting text and a large number running from 1 on the page after page 5 to 365 on the page two pages before page 736.The index lists the big numbers only, the "Take" number. Are punching bags in the index? No.Is Jean-Michel Basquiat in the index?Yes, for six Takes under "Basquiat, Jean-Michel" and for three of the same Takes under "Jean-Michel Basquiat" (portraits, only one of which includes "and urine on canvas").Is The Last Supper in the index?Yes, for three Takes.Do any of the Takes listed for Jean-Michel Basquiat coincide with Takes listed for The Last Supper? No, neither three or six, none!Which Take has ten punching bags?Take 255!!!How many times is Take 255 in the index?Just once, for "Ten Punching Bags (Last Supper)."Obviously, to use the index you need to know precisely what you are looking for.
4-0 out of 5 stars AN ANDY A DAY ... MOST ARTFUL, INDEED!
Think of this as an Andy a day keeping the aggravation away. Compiled by the staff of the Andy Warhol Museum (located in Pittsburgh, PA, and this year celebrating its tenth anniversary), this is a monumental, if scattered, collection of everything Warhol, deliberately non-traditional and open-ended. Fashion sketches from the `50s, Polaroids, the Brillo boxes, stills from his movies and television appearances, silkscreens and pencil drawings, the Death and Disaster Series, the Three Marilyns, the collaborations with the Velvet Underground ... it's all here, and it's all interlaced with quotes from Warhol, and "experts" on Warhol. The experts, today, sound like bozos, but there is humor and humanity in all of Warhol's comments. 365 Takes is a big book, perhaps too big, since Warhol is best savored in smaller doses. Still, the book certainly whets one's appetite for more concentrated, linear works of this great artist. Warhol's take on the middle of the twentieth century is astoundingly accurate and informed. Certainly very much the artist as an outsider observing the current culture, his views are surprisingly kind and simple. Let's face it: We all love gossip, dirty pictures and celebrities. Maybe we couldn't admit it back then, but it was true. And, of course, we all love Campbell's Soup.

Red silk cloth boards wrapped in handsome black silk folding slipcase in the Japanese style, with white toggles at the ends. Photographs by Michael Kenna. Text in Japanese and English by Kotaro Iizawa. Printed in Tokyo, Japan to the very highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of a series of exhibitions in the United States and Japan. "Michael Kenna's photographs have long inspired words such as 'mysterious', 'elegant' and 'hauntingly beautiful', adjectives that likewise describe the Japanese landscape. These photographs are the result of an ideal pairing of artist and subject. Kenna has had a large following in Japan ever since his first exhibition there in 1987. His many subsequent exhibitions and publications in Japan have provided him with ample opportunities to visit and photograph. During the past several years, as this project began to take shape, Kenna's trips became more frequent and intense. The resulting images are stunning" (Publisher's blurb). "He has been reflective when others have been militant, romantic when others have been skeptical. Such isolation can starve all but the most independent of talents, but for these it can provide a sanctuary where visions can develop undisturbed. Kenna is one of these" (The Times of London). Michael Kenna's best book thus far. 2006, ModernRare.com

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Basic Guide to Michelangelo and His Art

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great book on a great artist
There is probably no greater art historian in the second half of the 20th century than Howard Hibbard and this book is one of his best. Professor Hibbard, who has also written books on Caravaggio and a study of Poussin turns his attention to Michelanglo. This is not a rehash of The Agony and Ecstasy, Professor Hibbard's interest is in the work and the artist and not a study of the outward events of this great artist's life.I found Professor Hibbord's criticism insightful and interesting. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in the renaissance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Classroom Text
I am using this book for a college level course in Art History and am finding it very useful. The cronological format and detailed events throughout Michelangelo's life are both very helpful and I am learning quite a lot just from this one book. I do wish that there were color plates to go along with the text *there are black and white images, though*. Otherwise, it is highly educational and an interesting read. A very good buy! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Fascinating
I have received it as a birthday gift from my wife. There is nothing much to critique about this book, its really really good! Nevertheless, here it goes......
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Ansel Adams books
This is one of the best Ansel Adams books out there published by Bulfinch. It uses heavy paper stock and the print quality is excellent. To appreciate its quality, you have to view it under a brighter light setting, preferrably next to a window. You'll notice all the details in the shadow area and appreciate the overall print contrast.
5-0 out of 5 stars a good coffee table book...
