5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Invaluable!
As a graduating film student who is working on a thesis film, I have come to rely solely on this manual. It has absolutely every bit of information that any aspiring filmmaker could need.I've come to call it my "Bible" of filmmaking.Check it out!You won't regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hey, it's the "Cinematographer's Bible", you can't do without
Anybody who plans on working with REAL film should own this, learn it, know portions of it backwards and forwards and use it to their advantage.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Cinematographer's Bible
Also known as "The Cinematographers Bible", this thick hand-sized pocket book is an absolute must for anybody who owns or uses a 16mm, Super 16mm, 35mm, Super 35mm or 70mm motion picture camera (movie cameras). IT WILL NOT TEACH YOU CINEMATOGRAPHY! It is a technical manual to be used when shooting on film and has since become the industry standard book that most amateur and professional cinematographers own and use. Motion pictures cameras are also built around the specifications laid down in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deke - PhotoShop - McClelland
I am sure there are other books that might be easier to follow and that might offer more than this one for learning all of what PhotoShop has to offer, but I just have not found them yet. Light to read with easy step by step instructions for the beginner as well as the accomplished image processor.
5-0 out of 5 stars One-on-One -- it's not just another Photoshop book
Deke McClelland knows his subject very well and presents it in a clear and orderly way so new learning rests on a solid foundation. The format works: read the lesson, watch the DVD-ROM video lesson, do the exercises, take the quiz at the end of the chapter. Each lesson is designed to be understandable by those without much Photoshop experience and still include a few techniques that even experienced users probably don't know. And he does it all with good humor. Work files and video lessons are all included on the DVD-ROM in the book, which is bound so it lies open and flat on the desk without any hassle.
5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect jumpstart for Photoshop newbies
This was the jumpstart I needed to learning photoshop. This is not so much a tutorial as it is a get-up and start-using photoshop one-on-one session, exactly as the title suggests. So instead of learning the interface in text-book procedural fashion, it's kind of like apprenticing for the author Deke (who also wrote the photoshop bible book).BTW, the author is notably an Master at photoshop, as is apparent when he tells you "nobody uses this command, you can do that function with this new command here".There's a lot to be distracted in photoshop, hundreds and hundreds of different functions, and it turns out that many of these functions are obsolete and only left-in to satisfy old users, so having Deke point these things out is fantastic.Eg, unsharpen mask, obsolete.smart sharpen, da-shizzle.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth buying
Excellant and useful book.My only complaint is the first couple of chapters are basic Mac OS how to stuff and a waste of time/space. Be sure to read the Appendices on the DVD though

5-0 out of 5 stars Unjust Rip!
Lowering the books rating because the Mac requirements are higher than for FCE 3.0 isn't being very fair. The cover says HD, so it's obviously a new version. The description is certainly enough.I would raise the books rating and lower his.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only book of its kind right now
To date, this the only book that covers FCE 3.5 HD & I strongly recommend it. The intended audience I think is FCE users who would like to make more professional home videos but I think new filmmakers would also benefit from the lessons. If you're interested in mastering advanced topics like color correction, you'll have to pick up other books in this series. Overall though, this an excellent book for the beginner trying to learn FCE as well as how to craft a cinematic experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but pricey
I'm very new to lighting for any film stock. My goal is to become more aware of how to light for film, mainly digitial stock. This books does provide extremely detailed information on lighting, such as footcandles, gamma, lighting terms and much more, but mainly in one chapter. It did provide detail about digital film lighting and standard photography lighting. I wish it gave more insight about "moods" but I learned a great deal. Downside, it's expensive for the material you get.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Novices
This book dishes out a lot of information in the small space between it's paperback covers.I read it looking for film lighting basics, and had a tough time grasping some of the more technical language involving exposure, T-stops, etc, even though I have a decent background in photography. The book does a poor job of addressing and explaining these key concepts.I gleaned a decent amount of information from the pictures and diagrams, but they were poorly aligned with the text, requiring lots of flipping back and forth. All in all, I would reccommend this book only to people with a fair amount of knowledge of the physics behind photography and/or film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have

1-0 out of 5 stars Basic mumbo jumbo
I was excited to receive this book - I love learning about how other users master the techniques of Photoshop. Boy was I disappointed! I've seen these illustrations before - rehashed and rehashed - and if you're using Photoshop CS or CS2, don't waste your time. If you're still working with Photoshop 4 and have never done a collage, I guess you should buy this book. although you'll learn more on Adobe's tutorial website than you'll learn from this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars it's ok
The book is not bad ,but the sample is too simple...but it has detailed walkthroughs of the creation ..so maybe it's very useful for the people who just begin to learning photoshop.

4-0 out of 5 stars everyone's background is different...
Is this book too elementary? Is this book terrific?I can see both points. It's difficult trying to show the technique behind a moving shot with one or two storyboard frames.Still, for those of us who cannot always think of the options while we're thinking of other things (rewriting dialogue, pacing, budget), "Setting Up Your Shots" doles out lots of ideas, even if the descriptions are somewhat cursory. If you are cinematically oriented, if you already know how you want every shot, then you don't need this book.If you do not have a background in cinematography (especially those of us who basically have just watched lots of movies), then this book might help you with the "Oh, that's what they call it when they..." part.Someday I might think this book is too basic; right now, I'm happy to see a picture or two that jog my brain. They're not really "great camera moves," but they're good, basic camera moves. When you're done with your great camera moves, please share with us; I'd like to see them, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Setting Up your Shots
A great overall summary of the core shots available to filmakers with clear diagrams and good descriptions. Good for the beginner or the professional as a reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK
very practical way of showing how to do multimedia effects at minimal or no cost. Good illustrations & straight to the point. very clear bullet points under the photos, No boring bulcky paragraphs.
4-0 out of 5 stars Some good some bad.
The lighting stuff is really nice. The special effects section is great, but some of the stuff at the end of the book is pretty cheesy at best. All in all, I found the book very useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars great stuff about camera angles and movement
I visited a technical bookstore in Dallas during a programmer's convention. I was determined not to spend any money on any books while there (especially because I've already dropped a bundle on other video books). But I sat in the bookstore and read as much as I could for 2 or 3 hours. This book is amazing. It illustrates camera techniques by showing sequences of shots and how they were produced. Often that is the problem: we can read about something but not see it in action. More than half of the shot setups concern everyday scenes and situations. The last third was about special effects (blue screens, fake blood, etc) which didn't really interest me.

5-0 out of 5 stars User Friendly & Comprehensive
This was my first Apple Training Series book, and it was a very good experience. Going into this I had never learned a software package, let alone a complex one, almost completely from a book, and this experience proved it possible for me. It's no-nonsense, as comprehensive as I would want as a beginner, with very few errors, and user friendly - much more so than the tutorial that came with my software. At times it was very challenging, but that's the complexity of the s/w.Pictorials may not be as colorful as in other books, but this quickly becomes a non-issue as they are more than adequate and offset by the clarity of the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is it!
After several attempts at learning FCP, it was this book that did the trick. Each lesson is clear and concise. Not to mention, the book follows a logical progression in what it teaches you.In the end, I recommend this book without any reservation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch book
I have spent a lot of time checking out books from the library on Final Cut, but often disliked the organization of the books. The manual for FCP certification is great, and teaches you little tips that I haven't seen anywhere else. The author gets right to the work you need to do for editing. The writing style is clear and concise, with no fluff as you'll find in a lot of the training books with the conversational tones. Although I've edited on Final Cut before, I found this book to have something new to learn in each chapter. Another excellent aspect of the book is that it builds upon the knowledge you have learnt in the previous lessons. I wish the author could have spent more time on exporting to web. Still, highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly "reader friendly" introduction and survey of proven editing techniques
Now in an updated and expanded third edition, The Technique Of Film And Video Editing: History, Theory, And Practice by Ken Dancyger (Professor of Film and Television, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University) provides a thoroughly "reader friendly" introduction and survey of proven editing techniques and how those techniques influence the editing process, as well as presenting the history, theory, and aesthetics of editing in film and video. Nicely organized into three major sections (History of Film Editing; Editing for the Genre); and Principles of Editing), The Technique Of Film And Video Editing is enhanced with the inclusion of "Cutting Room Procedures", a filmography, a glossary, a selected bibliography for further study, and a comprehensive index. No film school or academic library film/video production instructional collection can be considered complete without the inclusion of The Technique Of Film And Video Editing as a core reference. Also very highly recommended for film students and aspiring film makers from Focal Press is Blain Brown's Cinematography: Image Making For Cinematographers, Directors, And Videographers (02-40805003, $44.99).
1-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get worse
I just read a chapter from this book on DMN. Maybe the author has something interesting to say or maybe some new insights - I'll never know. The writing is so poor that each sentence needs to be dissected to be understood.5-0 out of 5 stars 1st class
film, video, non-linear, linear - it's all pictures and sound. This book was everything i was looking for. It's not an explanation of how to edit. It's about how to think, how to dig deep inside your feelings and appy those feelings to the work you do. Forget the technicalities, forget the jargon, this is about asking yourself the question - what do i want the viewer to feel? It inspires you to think beyond what you know. I have been editing for a number of years - i am a better editor after reading this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is great.
Well did Jan Ozer. I really liked the Practical tips on shooting and editing in the beginning of the book. Great teaching from start to finish without jumping around. Nice and easy to understand visuals. I've studied graphic design and would recommend any Visual Quickstart Guide. (I tried Microsoft Windows Movie Maker 2 Do Amazing Things! and Didn't like it. Not enough visuals, jumped around, and to much reading)

Ozer's Microsoft Windows Movie Maker 2 book delivers the Visual Quickstart that it promises! The book includes easy to follow instructions for everything that one can do with Movie Maker 2.Ozer's "voice" is friendly and instructive. The text in the book is accompanied by helpful screenshots on virtually every page.

4-0 out of 5 stars Check out the hyperlinking ability
The Apple DVD Studio Pro is a popular but very complex tool for authoring DVDs. This book shows why it is popular, and also offers an improvement on the Apple documentation. The program has immense ability to record audio and video and to merge these in as intricate a fashion as you desire. There is a panoply of editing functions. For such things as adding subtitles to video tracks. Or supporting several languages using the audio tracks. Or to have a multistory project.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to a tricky application
If ever Apple made an application that could use some usability work it's DVD Studio Pro. It's a comprehensive and powerful application that has a user interface that only a mother could love. That's why I found this book so critical. It's an end-to-end guide from the very basics of DVD construction through to using templates and building custom transitions. There are also pitstops along the way into building DVD games and creating easter eggs.
5-0 out of 5 stars You have to see this to believe it
This book breaks new ground for O'Reilly. I'm used to finding great technical content in their books--that's what they're famous for--but media tools like DVD Studio Pro require a more visual approach for explanation, and Marc delivers this extremely effectively.

4-0 out of 5 stars Eternally spotless
"Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!/Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd... Desires compos'd, affections ever ev'n,/Tears that delight, and sighs that waft to Heav'n." The original Alexander Pope poem suits the movie whose title it inspired, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," a unique, surreal film about memories, love and sorrow.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a truly beautiful movie...
This is a truly beautiful movie.I seriously think it is one of Jim Carey's best films. The cinematography is provocative and intelligent. The acting is flawless. And the plot is a well devised mesh of fantastical conception and blatant realism mixed with subtle humor. It should have one an award. It was certaintly better than Million Dollar Baby.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking and truly original
This was a movie I didn't expect to like.I hadn't heard that much about it and wasn't all that enthusiastic about seeing another Jim Carey movie.Boy, was I pleasantly surprised.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for someone starting out...
This book has a lot of good information. It focuses more on practical effects and model building rather than digital effects, which is cool. However, if you are already in the business of creating visual effects, you probably will not get a lot out of it. With that said, the book is good and I DO recommend it for people getting started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, Entertaining, and Very Freakin' Cool
I'm not a professional filmmaker (I'm barley a hobbyist), but I totally dug this book!I've always been fascinated with visual effects, and I've read plenty of books on the subject...but none were as clear, concise, and easy to understand as this one.As I was reading, I had to look up a couple of technical terms, but like I said, I don't do this for a living.I have to believe that as much as I enjoyed the read, someone who will actually implement the author's techniques, will freakin' love this thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginner and veteran
I have woked in visual efeects for over 10 years and I like to think I know a great deal about my field but I still found that this book provded me with additional information on subjects I was already aquainted with. If you are new to visual effetcs the book provides a good overview of the many crafts associated with VFX and it is also a great refresher for those with experience. Mr Woodys book covers a wide spectrum of concpets and disciplines used in visual effects work in an enjoyable, easy to read style. If you're looking to get into VFX this is a great place to start. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very highly recommended instruction guide and reference work for filmmaking students and aspiring filmmakers
A very highly recommended instruction guide and reference work for filmmaking students and aspiring filmmakers, Practical DV Filmmaking by Russel Evans (Film, Video and Multimedia Lecturer, internet broadcasting advisor and freelance writer on video production) is an informed and informative guide to minimal-budget film making, including all of the diverse "tricks of the trade" involved in the production a marketable film. Enhanced with an accompanying CD, Practical DV Filmmaking is sure to enable even the most novice filmmaker to attain a mastery of the filmmaking process for the low-budget end of the entertainment or documentary market.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tells you Everything you know!!!
This book is fantastic. Evans outlines everything from the direction that audio waves are received depending on which external mic is used, to the compression rate for web movies. The book is incredibly up to date, as it should be considering it just came out. The set up of the book is very much like the 'for dummies' series, considering that there are projects along the way for you to undertake to sharpen your skills, along with info and ww link boxes. Most other books out there just outline what you need to do but don't tell you how to do things. This book really tells you what is going on when your making a film, and just doesn't say, if you do this then the picture will look pretty. He gets technical, and that's what needs to be said to give people getting into this a better understanding of what they are doing . He starts off with a great intro, for those who are just getting into digital filmmaking it really outlines what needs to be done to succeed. He identifies each technical aspect that he is going to cover, and then goes on to explain how you need to get to know your camera. Its obvious that a ton of research has been put into this book, as it really tells you everything you could possibly need to know. If you buy this book first then there really is no need for any other book out there. I've read this book cover to cover 1 time so far, and plan on reading it 2 more times.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent, must have book !
This book is just filled with great advice for newcomers to video/film making.

3-0 out of 5 stars From knowing nothing to creating good layout
My only layout experience prior to getting inDesign was MS Publisher. This book got me up and running and quickly understanding this significantly more advanced software. I found most of the videos not very relevant, except for one or two chapters where the video covered a topic more thoroughly than the book did (example: pencil tool). Even though I would recommend this book to someone learning inDesign CS2, I have two negative comments I'd mention to them first:
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent learning resource
My only complaint - and it's very small - is the author's assumption that a certain set of fonts is "always" installed with InDesign. Apparently, that "always" doesn't necessarily apply if you happen to purchase the educational version. While that's fine for now - I don't necessarily need huge piles of additional fonts - it makes the lessons a bit frustrating because they tend to rely on the fonts. For example, in teaching kerning and tracking, the author assumes that you've opened a file set in a particular font, which will yield very specific results on-screen - which you'll have some difficulty reproducing if you don't happen to have those fonts installed.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very useful tutorial and reference
If you want to quickly get up to speed with Adobe InDesign, look no further! The introductory video segues with the lessons seamlessly. The lessons themselves are thorough, and each step is clearly presented, making it simple for a new user to follow.
