5-0 out of 5 stars If Pictures are words
If pictures are words, this is an epic novel in the tradition of Dickens or Tolstoy. Read carefully and bring along the tissues so that -when you reach the final chapters -you won't leave the pages damp, as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Photographer
I waited in anticipation for this book's release. It was worth the wait.Annie Liebovitz, one of the world's most talented photographers, has released a book that will touch even those who have a limited interest in photograpy. From the opening pages to the closing pages, it's very evident that this is not just another Annie Liebovitz release.Instead, it's a special edition from her heart and soul.Whether it's photographs of her family and friends or famous people from throughout the world, she tells a story that you will not easily forget.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, interesting and superb @}->---
Even if you aren't into photography, you can certainly appreciate the quality, professionalism and beauty of Annie's work. She's one of the most trusted photographers around and she's been in the business for so long doing amazing work. This book is delightful to look at.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great pictures
Nearly every photograph in this book evoked a memory, whether good or bad. Some were disturbing, as they were meant to be, but many were uplifting. And it was neat to see how the cover art had changed over the years, and how Life's priorities have shifted. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the price
An excellent book providing all of the basic knowledge anyone could want on the subject of photography. A bit expensive, but the quality of the pictures makes it worth the price of admission.

3-0 out of 5 stars Am I the only one who found this jumbled and confusing?
Sure this book has EVERYTHING you need to know about photography and how to develop things, but these people know NOTHING about layout design.I just don't know where to look, where to read, and what to do next.If I didn't have an instructor, I wouldn't know what to do with my camera. It is very hard to find what you need in this book, much less go through a chapter. For people wanting to learn about photography, may I suggest the much cheaper book by National Geographic? It has much more clearly defined chapters though it does not have as much information overall (for example, no information about how to develop film).

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic guide to film photography
This seminal photographic guidebook, now in its eighth edition, should be basic reading for anyone planning to pursue photography as a career or hobby. Although it deals primarily with film photography, I think you'll find that a thorough grounding in the fundamentals will help you become a better, well-rounded photographer in the digital realm, too. Many of the photographic concepts covered here have been continued into digital photography, whether through digital camera features or by means of "digital darkroom" image editors like Photoshop.Start here, and you'll never regret it. ... Editorial Review

The Battle of Iwo Jima, fought in the winter of 1945 on a rocky island south of Japan, brought a ferocious slice of hell to earth: in a month's time, more than 22,000 Japanese soldiers would die defending a patch of ground a third the size of Manhattan, while nearly 26,000 Americans fell taking it from them. The battle was a turning point in the war in the Pacific, and it produced one of World War II's enduring images: a photograph of six soldiers raising an American flag on the flank of Mount Suribachi, the island's commanding high point.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Flags of Our Fathers" - A Timely Look at a Bloody Battle in Our History
Quite a while ago, Nick Olmsted, a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, recommended that I read "Flags of Our Fathers." I am glad that I finally got around to taking his advice. This story struck me on many levels at once, and this seems to be an opportune time to share some of my thoughts about this remarkable book, written by James Bradley, the son of one of the six Marines whose iconic picture of the raising of the flag over Iwo Jima riveted a war-weary nation.
5-0 out of 5 stars A hard book to read.
World War II seems such a long time ago for so many of us. Most Americans today weren't yet born when it took place. For this reason, I believe everyone old enough to comprehend its stories should read this book. James Bradley and Ron Powers have written a heart-pounding record of the thirty-five bloody days it took to wrest Iwo Jima (Sulfur Island) from the Japanese. The photograph of the raising of the American flag on Mt. Suribachi (1/400th of a second's space in time) is recognized around the world. The men who raised it: John "Doc" Bradley (the author's father);Harlon Block; Rene Gagnon; Ira Hayes; Franklin Sousley; and Mike Strank became instant heroes (though Block, Sousley and Strank died not long after). Bradley, Hayes and Gagnon lived to tell the tale, though both Hayes and Gagnon would die with the pain of their experiences on Iwo Jima seared into their psyches to the point they could not live with it successfully.
4-0 out of 5 stars 1/400th of a second in time

Massive, beautiful and gorgeous. What a treat to finally have a such an incredibly awe-inspiring piece as this to finally compile all of the wonderful works of art that go into what is, was and remains Tennant/Lowe.I have honestly wanted something like this to be produced for decades now, and when I first saw it in the UK, I ordered it there and waited for it for weeks. Now you can have it here quickly and painlessly.Definitely pick up a copy today...if you are even the most casual of fan (and somehow, I sense that if you stumbled across this, you are, as I, far more than that), you are very much deserving of this.Get it and cherish/treasure it for years. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Ansel Adams of Color Photography!
Galen Rowell pioneered "participatory (wilderness) photography," in which the photographer becomes an active creative participant in fine-art image making. An accomplished outdoorsman and adventurer, his deep emotional connection to nature pervades virtually all of his photographs. Another signature characteristic is his vivid use of color during the "magic hour" (at sunrise and sunset); indeed, it is arguably true that Rowell was as much a "master of color" as Ansel Adams was a master of black & white. (It is fitting that he received the Ansel Adams Award for his contributions to the art of wilderness photography in 1984.) The life of this extraordinary artist was cut tragically short in 2002 when the plane carrying Rowell and his wife (Barbara Rowell, herself an accomplished photographer) crashed as they were both returning home from a Workshop in the Sierra Mountains.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice for Galen Rowell Fans
Coming around 4 years after the untimely death of Galen and his wife Barbara, this book does not disappoint those who enjoyed his photography. I certainly do and have for many years. This book contains a lot of photos (over 175) from early stuff to photos from his last expedition for Nat Geo. Divided into 7 main sections, you will see many of the most famous of his photos but what I like is that there are photos in there I was not familiar with. I have nearly all of his books so I like seeing stuff I have not seen before. For instance a few climbing photos of Ron Kauk and Lynn Hill, or one of 2 skiers descending the Ruth glacier in Alaska, or one from Lake Powell. Also nice are the little spot essays of some of the photos such as one by his daughter Nicole about the Lynx photo from Alaska. I'm not sure the printing of the book is of superior quality. Some of the colors seem off and a lot of grain shows up. That really is my only complaint. I am very happy to have this book, although I would rather see photos from his latest expeditions instead of a retrospective. This book is certainly worth the money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Far Better
The book itself is large and heavy; even so, a number of the photographs are spread across both pages--something that in my experience detracts from a picture's visual appeal. The photographs are in black-and-white and color; many of the color photographs are very well thought out as a total ensemble.
5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect 10!
This is the most beautiful book of the most exquisite women I've ever seen. The superbly reproduced photographs are not in the least pornographic, but intensely erotic. The women reveal themselves to you in private rooms, villas, mansions, etc., sometimes in stockings or erotic lingerie, in provocative, intriguing and very classy poses. If you love gazing at gorgeous women, you won't regret buying this book, which is a bargain at the selling price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book
The photography and the text of this book has been described in other reviews, but I want to add that this is now one of the most beautiful books that I own. The typesetting is flawless, the paper is of a much higher weight than I have seen in other monographs, and, of course, the reproductions are class. These points are magnified by the sheer size of the book-- check the dimensions given in the details above. The book is a work of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book with beautiful photography
The photography in this book is beautiful.Ms. Scott captures the innate beauty and emotions of every dog she photographs.Just by looking at these dog faces, one can get a sense of the hardship, the longing, and the hope of these canines. The stories behind each dog gives them such depth and character.Of course, these stories leave the reader/viewer filled with emotions including sadness and joy, but most importantly, they provide a reminder of just how precious shelter dogs are and just how much they want and deserve to be loved.
5-0 out of 5 stars Man's best friend, forgotten...
This is a collection of photographs of dogs from various shelters, each with a short description of their situation. These dogs are the unlucky and unwanted, sometimes abondoned by their "best friend", and some are picked up as strays. The photos capture the character of these dogs, and some have such sad looks. It is heartbreaking to read that some of these dogs in this book were euthanized, sometimes simply due to the lack of space in shelters. In those cases, these photos are the only remaining evidence of their short existance. Recommended for anyone who loves dogs. A percentage of proceeds from sales go to shelters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Restoring Faith in Humanity
Years ago, when I lived in Washington, DC, I had the privilege to know Zainab Salbi when she was first starting Women for Women (called Women for Women in Bosnia at that time). There was a glow of inspiration in her face when she spoke of the plight of women and there was also incredible strength in her.In a time when I am often ashamed of the gross inhumanity we practice upon our fellow man, women like Zainab and the others courageous enough to share thier stories in this book, restore my faith that one day humanity will actually deserve to call itself civilized.Until then, we must rely on the courage of the few, who like Zainab, see beyond themselves and into the hearts of the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Other Side of War- Captivating, Encouraging and REAL
Once again Zainab Salbi and Laurie Becklund have brought a riveting picture of the reality of war from the perspective of those who are left to hold the pieces together- the women. My organization, Soroptimist International, has been working in partnership with Women for Women International on a project called Project Independence Women Survivors of War for 3 1/2 years and I have had the privilege to go "to the field" on three occasions and meet women in the program. It is not an accident that this amazing organization, through the leadership of Zainab- was just awarded the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Award last month. They are the first women's organization to ever recieve it- and the impact of the $1.5 million dollar gift will continue to transform lives of women who are currently socially isolated and desperate and in one year- they will be well on towards their journey of becoming self sufficient and active citizens. These stories are genuine, courageous and TRUE "snapshots" of the unspeakable costs of war- particularly on women. This is a must read! Dawn Marie Lemonds, Soroptimist International

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully inspiring
Zainab Salbi's new book is a beautifully inspiring example of photo journalism and the heart-rending story about the other side of war. It will make a wonderful gift for the holidays. The women in the pictures reach out from the pages and touch your heart, while Salbi's words touch your soul. The message truly inspires me to not only be more thankful for all that life has given me, but also more understanding to what life has given others and seek out more ways to help these women survivors of war. The organization, Women for Women International is an amazing organization, doing amazing work; this new book is equally amazing! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure for any U2 fan
No words can describe the beauty, quality and detailed work of this book; you can really tell the dedication Anton Corbijn put into it, as well as his loyalty to the band through all these years. It's not only a masterpiece describing through pictures and notes the history of the greatest rock band in the world, but also a must have for any major U2 fan. It's personalized album type format makes it a wonderful experience both to read and look, and the quality and art work of all the pictures is out of this world; it's almost like you grow closer to the band! I loved it and can't get enough of it!!It's worth every cent. Really!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good backgrounder
The iconic photos in this book are an essential addition to any U2 fans collection. It's great to see other shots taken in the same session as the well known images that have graced the magazines and album covers over the years. Best of all are the explanations behind the shots and the honesty that comes across from the photographer and the band.
