The author has an impressive array of initials after his name; he is, amongst other things, a Doctor of Science, a Member of the Imperial College, an Associate of the Royal College of Science, and a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society as well as a Visiting Professor of Physiological Optics and of Colour Science, and a former Assistant Director of Research at Kodak. Not What I Expected
I expected this book to be more of a training manual of techniques. Instead, every page is a photo with a VERY brief explanation of how or where it was taken, often without enough detail to recreate the idea. Although the photos are beautiful and Tony Sweet is a great photographer, the book is not at all what I expected. If you're looking for a photo book of his work, it's great, but don't expect to learn much from it.

Feast For the Eyes
If you already have Tony's other book "Fine Art Nature Photography" then you know what to expect.This book is almost identical to that one expect that it focuses entirely on flowers.
Incredibly beautiful and creative
Tony makes you think about flower shots in ways you never would on your own.The images are a mix of straight shots, and then shots that are imaginative and creative by using multiple exposure camera techniques.

Meh... Next.
Nobody can deny that Mr. Rodney knows how color management works in Photoshop better than most people, but unfortunately, knowledge of a subject doesn't make you a good writer. I find the bulk of Mr. Rodney's ramblings (both those published on his website-that-time-forgot and posted to various discussion groups and mailing lists) to teeter on the verge of complete unreadability most of the time, and while my hopes were high that a good editor might tame his curious linguistic proclivities here, they were quickly dashed upon skimming through the text. What's worse, the illustrations and photos in every single copy of this book I've ever seen have suffered from severe magenta color casts, leading one to wonder why the author and his publishing company failed to practice what they preached in bringing this title to the public. If you didn't know who Andrew Rodney was to begin with, you'd likely think him full of beans based on the appearance of the plates in this volume. After all, why should readers believe consistent, predictable color in print to be a realistically attainable goal when even the guy who wrote the book on the subject can't seem to achieve it?
The best tutorial introduction to CMS.
Get Andrew Rodney's book, and a copy of Real World Color Management, and you'll have the best existing CMS tutorial and thethe best reference text.

Disappointing to say the least
I wanted to buy this book for a long time and waited until the price was right. When I bought it, I couldn't check inside because it was wrapped in plastic. So when I brought it home and opened it, I was very disappointed with the photos. I was expecting super high quality photos and instead found tons of OLD photos of galaxies and stars that have been available in other books (which I have or have read) since the 1960s and 1970s. Or worse, photos seemingly taken directly from websites, with web quality, ie: not very good.

seeing through the opaqueness
whether this is Mann's best work it certainly is the most thought-provoking, when you think of the Deep South, you think of a place much like Stravinsky's Russia,Eastern Europa,or parts of New York State intolerant,class-orineted;superstitious,but also one that savors progess and the science of the image, the sensual,the evocative,but a place also defeated,Appomattox, that really has takened long to live with, in fact defeat is covered everyday in the macho-isms that has been part of popular strains in music.
Transcendent Images
Mann is one of the very most gifted photographers of our time. In her landscape work, she finds the perfect marriage of technique and subject matter--marrying the processes of 19th-century photography and historic lenses to the subject matter of great sites of the South, the profound and mysterious ways in which site carries memory. In doing so she has created images that seem to derive from our own memories, carrying the ghostly presences of the past, embodying something we hold in our minds while adding something distinctly new as well. Mann's are transcendent, glorious photographs that should be examined and appreciated by anyone with a discerning eye for great work from our own time.

Magnificent and complex
This is certainly Mann's best work. The landscapes seem destilled from both southern history as well as intimate and collective dreamworlds - both beautiful and intimidating. Look for a truly transcendental image that depicts a wooded landscape scarred by some kind of disaster. The image merges with the scarred emulsion of the glass plate to form a scull like shape that seems to expand into a fragment from and infinite outer space. Much Needed Book
Digital photographers don't pay enough attention to color management. This book is exactly what is needed to remedy that lack.You'll find all the basics here, and enough in-depth information to start you on the road to calibrating and fine-tuning your digital equipment to accurately reproduce the colors you see.

Just What You need
This is exactly what I was looking for; it gives a quick in-and-out overview of colour management, with detailed information about calibration and profiles. Other books on this topic are twice the size, which I don't think is necessary for most people.

Welcome to the Nuclear Age
100 Suns is the best collection of nuclear test pictures in one volume that I've seen. The descriptions of the blasts are interesting and factual, and are in the back of the book so as not to detract from the pictures themselves. There is also a good chronology of weapons development in the back of the book. If you have any interest in seeing what the awesome power of splitting or fusing atoms looks like, this is your book. This is a most unusual coffee table book which should start many fun conversations.

A work of art
A great compilation. I have this on my coffee table next to a copy of Light's "Full Moon" and both are fantastic. Every page deserves to be framed and hung on a wall.

There's better out there...
I'll start off by saying that I own a number of nude-photography books. That said, I feel I now must say that after over a year of owning this book, it is one that I least come back to. The women depicted within this thick book are real, natural, beautiful women, but what makes me give this only 3 stars is the lackluster photography. It seems the use of lighting and shadows, as well as unique angles and different lenses wasn't important to the photographer, and it shows. Every photo feels the same, and it gets boring FAST.
poor exposures
I like the models and bits of information about the shoots and the girls are lovely. The Author A. Einhorn does not include camera settings and most pictures have poor lighting and are poorly exposed. Technically it is not a great book but I do like the models and theme of the book. I think $25 is about twice the price as I feel it is worth.

Awesome Photos
This is a great book of women in nudes and it is very real. People caught in the everyday throws of life, and not in set poses as you will find in magazines such as Maxim, Playboy, etc. The amatuer can look at this book and learn lighting from the ways that the girls are posed in the book. You get a great feel of what the author is trying to get from each subject and it is translated nicely in pictures. ... Read more

Goes on and on
Includes miles of intellectual blather. Fits well into sexually charged point of viewof photography. Uses most horrific and grotesk as examples. On page 33 in third edition author mentions head decapitation as one photographer's "external" influences. Uses sexual pictures as examples. Generally a politically correct lightly negative type discourse on photography. I feel sorry for the students subjected to this pulp.

Excellent introduction.
Having never taken a course in art appreciation, I found this book to be an excellent introduction to interpreting photographic images.The comment above about this book serving as a framework is a good one.Essentially any photograph will fall into one of the categories, giving the viewer a frame of reference within which to interpret and appreciate the meaning of the work.It forces you to slow down and think about each photograph you encounter, ultimately enriching the viewing experience.I highly recommend it for photography aficionados and photographers alike.

Criticisng Criticism
A look at the subtitle to this book, "An Introduction to Understanding Images", might lead one to believe that it is about photographs and what makes them good or bad (or if there are such things as "good" and "bad" photographs).But instead it is about photographic criticism, primarily written.And even then it really doesn't tell you very much about how to write criticism yourself, or how to interpret what you read, or how to develop patterns of thought that would enable you to criticize in a useful fashion.Instead most of the book is concerned with the pigeon holes into which different kinds of photographic criticism can be put.Read more

Definitely the Definitive Guide
Takes guts to include "The Definitve Guide" as the subtitle of a book. Question is, is it deserved? Answer a respounding YES! Am I surprised? Not when I see that the author is Tim Rudman. I own all of his books and hold them in the highest regard. This book is well printed, the paper stock is heavy and the glossy images allow you to see the subtle differences in his comparison images. This book is well structured, each chapter is broken up into manageable chunks that have a nice flow to them. This book has the right balance of theoretical and practical instruction. Most procedures include a step by step recipe. There is plenty of supporting information in the back of the book such as the Formulary, FAQs, Colour Search, DIY Toning, Weights and Measures etc... This book is suitable for both the Novice and Advanced photographic print maker and is the only book on toning that you are likely to ever need. All in all very complete and dare I say DEFINITIVE.

Superb technical reference
This book provides in depth detail into the toning process without getting too deep into the scientific chemical reactions. It covers many, many types of toning, provides many examples of results, and is very well written. The author covers techniques old and new and provides a number of different formulas in the formulary section at the end of the book for those who are interested in using non-commercially available toners. I found this book to be most useful in both understanding the process and in expanding my toning skills. I can honestly say that this is one of the most useful books on wet process printing that I have ever read.

If you want to know how to tone prints, this is the book!
Wow. I didn't know there were so many ways to tone a print. Mr. Rudman is some kind of psycho-wizard-freak that has managed to learn EVERYTHING there is to know about toning prints.

Learning the art of correct exposure
If you are new to photograpy or simply want a refresher on the concept of obtaining correct exposure and the importance of using a spot meter, this is a great book.It can be a little repetative, but this is probably necessary for someone who is unfamilar with these concepts.Overall, I found this to be very informative and well written with helpful illustrations.

A Must for those who love Spotmetering
I have been practising the techniques given in this book for the past 3 months with my F100. I am very glad to say that my pictures have improved remarkably. Mr. Bahman explains a really complicated topic in a very lucid and practical manner which is easy for anyone to start spotmetering instantly. With the new cameras, it is easy to fall into the trap of matrix metering and in the bargain miss a lot of fun in making a picture. Mr. Bahman brings back the fun by his easy to follow methods and success is guaranteed along with the fun of creating better images. I strongly recommend this book to all serious photographers. Read it atleast once and you will find the change in your images. Now I have bought a separate Pentax digital spot meter which is a constant companion to my F100s.
