5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for learning technique
I am fairly new to Colored Pencil and this book has been such a great help in achieving the quality that I want in my work!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Art-Teaching Resource
I based an art unit for my Advanced Art high school students around this book and I was very impressed with my students' results! They first practiced the various stroke techniques that Ms. Kullberg shows, learned pertinent vocabulary, practiced layering, color matching (and mixing) and then simply took off.I highly recommend this book (as well as the other one by Ms. Kullberg) to art teachers who are looking for new and exciting techniques to share with their older students!

Not a good book for technique and selection of illustrations. Much must be considered in colored pencil and I learned nothing from this book. Thanks ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beginner?
Having worked with pastels and finding I didn't like them, I decided to explore colored pencil.I don't think I could have found a better book! However, the title although not misleading, but perhaps confusing. If you are a beginner, in the sense that you have never picked up a pencil and want to learn to draw, and think this book will show you, it won't.Put it on your wish list until you are ready for it, and check out some books on drawing.I like Betty Edwards and Lee Hammond. If you already have some drawing skill, even very basic, then this is a great book to get into the world of color. This book is more of a technique than a how-to.I've found it very inspiring. However, no matter how good a book is, nothing can replace art lessons from a good teacher. If you are truly a "serious beginner" sign up for a class and use this book as a supplement at home.

3-0 out of 5 stars Focused on detail but not enough
I think this book si god for people who already know about colored pencil. It is not for someone who is a beginner. Don'g be fooled and buy it thinking you will learn from the beginning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward
This book is pretty straightforward and offers a lot of ideas and a few tricks here and there. I especially found the skin-tone section extremely helpful, where you'll find every ethnic tone along the scale it provides. Perfect for those who work with Prismacolor pencils...probably trickier for those who don't. I only wish there was some information about using other tools alongside the pencils themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Kullberg is an outstanding Pencil Portrait artist. The book has excellent examples, as well as recommendations on what materials to use, as well as guidelines on how to do it.I was so impressed with the book that I got on Kullberg's website and ordered several video trainings from her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ann Kullberg is Awesome!
Not too long ago I purchased both the books "Colored Pencil Portraits Step by Step" and "Capturing Soft Realism in Colored Pencil" by Ann Kullberg via Amazon.com, and I was amazed by the quality of the instruction contained in the books as well as the exquisite talent of Ms. Kullberg. I noticed that one Amazon.com reviewer mentioned Ms. Kullberg offers a "companion CD" at her website to the Capturing Soft Realism in Colored Pencil book so I thought I'd visit there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring ideas off the beaten path
This book is chock-full of ideas for colored pencil that depart from the standard blending and sketching methods. If you are an ultra-realist, there is a demonstration (or at least an example) of a cat sitting in sunlight that will knock your socks off.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Inspirations for Colored Pencil Use
Expands the repertoire of colored pencils by including their use with other media. The result is mixed media at its best. This is not a book for people who need a paint by numbers approach, but it should not be shunned by beginners. There are many demonstrations in the book which take the artist (or would-be artist) by the hand and show how the subject was created, down to a precise list of what materials were use, including brand names of pencils and other media. The book utilized the works of several artists and explained their techniques in very clear language. Yes, some of the techniques are advanced, but this should provide inspiration for a beginner, not discouragement.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not a practical book
This is a book which explores the combination of colored pencil with a myriad of other techniques. This is a book for the advanced colored pencil artist wishing to expand their horizons. Definitely not a how to book- not very practical. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous book
I have read many coloured pencil books, but this is the only one I have bought or kept. I refer to it often for ideas on how to combine colours or figure out a problem. Some might say that it isn't broad enough, but you have to be willing to take the basic ideas and develop your own solutions as well :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the $175 workshop I just attended!
I just paid $175 to attend a colored pencil workshop by a woman that I thought was going to really help me with my work instead she said that this book was what got her started. I found that 99% of what this woman taught in the class was ALL from this book I already owned!! So save yourself money on workshops from so-called "famous" teachers & invest in this book!! You won't be sorry & it will teach you so much!!!! By the way, the reviewer who wants a less realistic approach to cp , there are too many cp books out there like that already (Bet Borgeson, Michael Warr, & 2 Walter Foster ones).

3-0 out of 5 stars It's good, but things are missing...
First of all, the book is good in a way. It has a lot of useful explanations and even has drawings that you can copy to practice what they teach you. But the authors concentrate exclusively on still lifes, which makes the book rather limited for other subjects. For example, it doesn't cover animals or animal "textures" such as fur, scales or feathers. Landscapes are not even mentioned, or natural textures such as tree barks, leaves, rocks, wood, water, etc. Portraits or people are not included either. So no skin types, hair or clothing are present in the book. Flowers are very briefly covered. The book has gorgeous illustrations, and it was carefully done, but incomplete. It should have been called "Still Life Colored Pencil Solution Book", in order to be really true to its contents. To "fill the gaps" left by this book, I had to buy other colored pencil books: "Creating Textures in Colored Pencil" by Gary Greene which is very comprehensive,"Creating Radiant Flowers in Colored Pencils" also by Gary Greene, "Colored Pencil Portraits, step by step" by Ann Kullberg and "The big book of Drawing" by Lee Hammond. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Expand your pencils
I have been using Prismacolor pencils for many years and over that time, developed my own techniques, but I found the ideas and examples in this book to be great. I have been dabbling in the techniques I learned in this book and combined some of them with my own. Drawing some things had always been a struggle for me to get "just right," but after seeing some of the detailed examples, I now do them without thought. My favorite discovery in this book was learning to get rid of or hide my mistakes instead of my previous method of just scraping the entire project and starting over.
5-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Color Pencils
I like the book a lot, it will be of great use to me,both for learning and a good source of reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars I Returned Book
The drawings in this book were amaturistic, if not childish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent instruction
This is one of the excellent books on Colored Pencil fine art.I have read or used nearly a dozen of such books. The author gives a nice balance between skills/techniques and the fine art aspects to develop masterly paintings. The text is simple and easy to follow. The author being a portrait artist, the chapter on portraits is well written and valuable. The art work and the illustrations are very instructive.
2-0 out of 5 stars Little Substance in This Book
I have a personal library of over twenty books on colored pencil and unfortunately, this is the weakest book I own on the topic. There is very little on technique and there is a general lack of substance. If you are looking for an overview on colored pencil, there are far better books available. One that comes to mind is Exploring Colored Pencil by Sandra Angelo. And if you are looking for technique or practical information this book simply doesn't cut it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overview of Colored Pencil
This is a good overview book showing colored pencil techniques. The author focuses primarily on various techniques and the various papers used that can contribute to different effects. It is not a book geared for drawing and painting newbies. So if you are someone new to drawing and painting and want to work in colored pencil use this book in connection with books such as Mona Brookes' excellent Drawing for Older Children and Teens: A Creative Method for Adult Beginners, Too or Betty Edwards' Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.Read more

There are many other books available on this subject and they are all better than this one. There is nothing to be gained from reading this book. Forget it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Stunning Examples
The illustrations for the techniques are Kutch's own colored pencil artwork. Her flowers are stunning and if I ever achieve a drawing on the level of her poppies or the morning glories, I'll be very happy.
4-0 out of 5 stars Be Advised it is much to do about Watersoluble Pencils....
This is a wonderful book, don't get me wrong, however I expected it to relate more to colored pencils by themselves. The first section does, then it goes on to a much larger section on watersoluble pencils and the final section is devoted to using them in tandem. If you are interested in using them in tandem then by all means, this book should be on your shelf! The text is precise and easy to follow, the artwork is wonderful, to say the least. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best colored pencil instruction book for pets on the market!
This is the best colored pencil book for learning to master pet portraits on the market.Hands down!!!I own allot of art books and am a self-taught artist in colored pencil and believe me, Anne deMille Flood has done for pet portraits when Ann Kullberg has done for people portraits.I cannot possibly say enough about this book, but it's worth every penny and then some. You won't be dissappointed, except perhaps wishing she had a full series of these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic Pet Portraits in Colored Pencil IS A REALISTIC VALUE
Outstanding book. Excellent results obtained immediately after just briefly reviewing the first few chapters. Wonderfully effective techniques. Easy to learn. Excellent format! I've been an Illustrator/ Artist for over twenty-seven years. I highly recommend this book.

This is an excellent step by step book how to draw animals with colored pencils. Anne Flood is an wonderful artist I never get tired looking at her work. I am a beginner artist and I have brought other art books online and I was greatly disappointed none of them were step by step as they had claim. After emailing the author about her book I decided to get her book at the library; I was not disappointed. I am glad I ordered her book. If you love animals and want to draw them; this is the book. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Different Concept for Backgrounds
I found Borgeson's handling of background very interesting and different from all the other colored pencil artists' books. Her use of spot layering and single layer color juxtaposition helps to make the large areas go quickly. She also presents other methods to speed up colored pencil application.Of course, she covers all the basics, too.A good book for any colored pencil artist.

5-0 out of 5 stars No idea where to start? pick this one.
I always liked to draw using colored pencil. Nevertheless, I never found any interesting book that would deal with several approaches to the colored pencil medium. After reading about Mrs. Borgeson work, I decided to try and never got disapointed. Her books (all of them) give you several differentpoints of view about the colored pencil and teaches you (step by step) howto apply the techiniques to solve apparently simple problems. Layering, lifting, color interactions, error corrections, light and much more. A nicebook to have and enjoy. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was a little disappointed in this book, because it says Flowers and Nature, and shows a beautiful flower on the front cover, but she doesn't show you how to do anything that nice. Also all of her examples look unfinished and unrealistic. Her trees are the worst, but she does great bark, but she doesn't show you, she just tells you how to do it.5-0 out of 5 stars Vivid results from colored pencils
Lee Hammond presents great tools and ideas for those that tend to have a tightness in nature to their drawing. Her realist ways with a pencil are always remarkable to me.I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn about applying color to achieve realistic results.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's nice, informative but...
I liked the book, but I wish it had more information or more examples, either by the author or by other artists in the medium. In order for me to really learn about the medium, I have had to buy not only this book but others about the same subject as well... It is not a problem with this book in particular, but a problem with ALL colored pencil books. All of them show a "part" of the what the medium has to offer. I wish there was a "compendium" of several authors about the subject, so we, aspiring artists, would have some sort of "big book" or "bible" about this.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Anyone Working in the Medium!
When I first recieved a box of watercolor pencils as a gift, I had no idea what to make of them... I do passing fair work with colored pencils, but watercolors have always been beyond me.I muddled along, experimenting and tossing the miserable results, until I found this book.Oh, the joy! Finally, information on how to get the most out of my creations! How to balance the use of dry and wet, how to work the pencils to their best use, how to work in multimedia (which I do). This is most certainly a bible of sorts for the watercolor pencil artist! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Making it real--one artist's technique with colored pencils
This book is of somewhat limited use if you have anything other than ultra-realism on your mind. But having said that, Cecile Baird presents a flawless technique with colored pencils that will have your jaw dropping at her gorgeous work. This book is inspiring and there is plenty of eye-candy here to admire.
4-0 out of 5 stars good information on innovative techniques
I did enjoy the book and found it to be informative with good information of her wonderful and innovative techniques. I would have liked more definative instuctions on how "Shades of Green" was done, not just a small section on rendering Kiwi fruit. The beginning 50 or so pages were on information commonly found in any CP book and therefore of little value to me and perhaps to others who have a library of books already. But if you are a beginner with no books it would be of value to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars fellow artist's view
I'm not a beginner, but I think an artist on any level of experience and using almost any medium could benefit from this book. It's a jewel, and the emphasis on capturing light is inspiring.Cecile Baird generously shares her wonderful technique, as well as every aspect of creating a painting.Great presentation, valuable tool!

The original was good, the revised edition better. But don't turn down the first if you see it in the second-hand store! This book transformed my painting.Though I used pastels or acrylics for twenty-five years, I have not touched them since. It is the perfect media for a small apartment (zero mess) and an irregular schedule (the media doesn't dry out before you can get back to work, and the colors stay the same).Especially valuable because the artist shows how the paintings develop in layers, and how she judges and corrects them to fit her evolving ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just starting out? This is for you!
I am very new to art on paper and am exploring all the different media available to me.I borrowed this book from the library to see if it was something I needed on my shelves and my considered opinion after reading it is I MUST HAVE A COPY OF MY OWN!The exercises are clear, instructions basic, explanations are concise and make sense and the book flows from one chapter to another. This is an excellent book for the person seeking to get an overall exposure to this medium.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive book on colored pencil
As an artist who works in colored pencil as one of preferred medium, I am not ashamed to state that I basically learnt my technique from this book (and lots of exercise, of course.) Ms. Borgeson provides in this book both primary techniques of color application, which instantly put colored pencil in the "painting" category with their rich color and texture possibilities - and "tricks" for getting various effects. Focused on painterly texture and color, but not shunning experimental things, this book is one of the best to get started in color pencils - and return to it over and over again for refreshment. You won't find step-by-step instructions of "how to draw a blue horse" in his book, but rather a variety of examples and principles on which to build a color pencil drawing. ... Read more

Exploring Colored Pencil is truly a work of art and is jam-packed with history, techniques, illustrations and exercises for beginner(me), intermediate and advanced students. I learned how to blend colors and use different techniques and loved how the book was laid out in an easy to follow format. This book is a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive, easy to follow
This book covers the full gamut... from 8 different techniques to specific subjects like drawing animals, landscapes, still life and people. My favorite section is the one on faces where she gives detailed drawings that you can copy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent drawings
The drawings and the use of colored pencils is awesome. However, She does not explain how to draw the bird, or how to apply the colors. There are some examples shown, but not for the blue bird, or cardinal. You have to figure it out on your own how to apply the colors for these.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners
I'm a loyal fan of Lee Hammond b/c her graphite drawing series helped me out a lot when I was 11 and 12, made me learn how to draw and also the importance of good supplies. (There's a big difference between sketch pads and artist's paper when you're doing fine art!).5-0 out of 5 stars Love Lee's artwork
Another fabulous book by Lee Hammond. I like her style, not only does she instruct, but she shows you how the work looks completed using different types of colored pencils which is great.Great job. I also have some of her other colored pencils books and love them all. ... Read more
