A great photographer paints with too broad a brush (I know, mixed metaphor)
Stephen is a great photographer.He is a pioneer.He has written a tome on digital photography, its history, its technology, its ethics, its art, its....its...too much!I agree with one of the other reviewers that it would make a great textbook, but like many textbooks, they bog down in their "universality."They cover too much.They are more suited for the classroom so as to spark discussion and research on a broad range of topics as does this book.There are better "how to" books on Photoshop.There are better books on artistic technique.There are better books on the ethics and legality of photography as well as books on photographic art form and the photojournalist genre.No, I'm not going to list all those "better" books here because this is a review of one book, and I don't want to start a debate over what's better.I read the book.It is very interesting and has some magnificent examples of Stephen's work and how he creates.But much of the book put me to sleep and caused me to say to myself, "this is all very interesting, but is it something I really need to know or care about to do fine art printing, or, be a better photojournalist, etc." Hedoes do a really good job explaining the intricacies of digital sensors and how they all work, if you're interested in that sort of thing as well as the history, advantages and disadvantages of the scanning back.Ho hum! I don't care about sitting on an iceberg making a 5 minute exposure, but I do appreciate the effort and the result. In addition, Stephen does wear his politics and ethics on his sleeve a bit.For example he goes into whether or not to edit out a Coke can in a landscape photograph. Of course, he wouldn't, but many would. Who cares. It's not important, what's important is the photograph. And including rude caricatures of the President, references to bogus Lee Harvey Oswald pictures and a nit-picky criticism of Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother left me scratching my head as to why he would stoop to such political-social issues in a book about digital photography.See, there's the "textbook" angle I was talking about.Great for discussion in the classroom course, Digital Photography 101, History, Art, Ethics and Society. Snooz! Well, anyway, my point is you could write a whole book on photographic history, or art, or ethics, etc. if that is your interest. And if that is what you are interested in reading, you should buy each one of those books. I have several of them. So, should you buy the book if you are serious about photography? Probably. You probably already have 10 or 20, books or more if you are serious about photogrphy, and you probably only refer to 3 or 4 of them on a repeated basis.I'd look at the book in a store somewhere, first. Then if you like it, buy it at Amazon (How's that for a plug!), or if you're overcome with guilt, buy it at the store you're in (remember, I'd edit out the Coke can).Stephen is a 5-star photographer and a pioneer in the field.His book gets 3 stars. His photgraphs get 5 stars.

Present at the Creation
Here's a book to which I would have liked to give the highest rating.Steven Johnson was one of the earliest practitioners of digital photography and has continued in an active role in innovation.Like King Alfonso X of Spain and Dean Acheson, if he did not make the world, he was at least present at the creation.

This is, quite simply, a gorgeous book. Filled with amazing photos by Stephen Johnson, it provides a wealth of information for photographers of any ability.

Best book I have found so far...
This book is great. It has nearly every process I was interested in, and steps you through each of them with: easy to follow instructions, checklists of chemicals, and useful/helpful pictures.

This book is great for someone who has a little experience, or for those who may have a lot. It gives a lot of great ideas for new ways of creating and working on images, and provides a lot of information on how to go about the processes. Some info is pretty technical, but there are plenty of processes that are novice-friendly.

Preserving the art of monochrome
Film photographers have long savored black-and-white photography for its stark alternative to realism, and the stripped down, minimalistic approach to creating an image.Digital photography threatened to push black-and-white photography to extinction, but, thankfully, artists like Hamilton have preserved the spirit of the medium and extended it through the use of Adobe's flagship image editor.

Nice Fine Art Book
This is a very nice fine art photography book dealing with black and white. The author is obviously very well versed in Adobe Photoshop and his expertise is evident through his writing. The inforamtion is well presented and clearly stated. The images are well done and have a broad appeal to both a professional and amateur.

Another great book from Memory Makers
This is a fabulous book. Great ideas and detailed instructions. It can be challenging and time consuming but the results are well worth the time and effort. I'd say this book is for those who want some new and fresh ideas and methods to their work. I highly recommnend this book to beginners and seasoned scrapbookers.

Excellent Tutorial
This is a great book- full of artistic pieces and knowledge on how to recreate your own work!I wanted this book for a long time, found it on Amazon and paid a fraction of what I would have paid in the store!

Timeless Information
Though this book was published clear back in 1997, the information is timeless. I tend to shy away from older how-to books, but this is a great book to add to your art and craft library. I wish all how-to books were this thorough and informative. You get your money's worth here.

Simply the Best
An excellent book for all levels of scrapbookers, but especially so for those who are just beginning. Well done.

Refreshing new ideas for the medium-advanced scrapbooker!
I have looked and wasted so much money buying scrapbooking books here and there for these tiny bits of "goodness" in them.When this book arrived I realized I finally found a true inspiration book - no fluff, no fillers, no really basic-how-to-scrapbook instructions.Everytime I open this book I become entralled with the examples....(Ooohhh, I NEED to do that next time...WAAYY TOO COOL!).

Chemistry
Things you never knew about the developing process are in this.I was quite impressed, and am enthusiastic about re-reading it.

Superb
Quite simply the definitive darkroom handbook. You have to appreciate that some of the chemicals and products referred to are 20 years out of date, but the principles and basic techniques haven't changed one iota. If you're looking at processing your own films, transparancies and prints, both colour and black and white, you need this book.

Techniques can be crossed over to Digital Photography
I have found it practical to use older textbooks on analog photography techniques to sharpen skills and enhance creativity in the digital realm.While newer books are being written on such topics they tend to skip along and trivialize important concepts.Good pictures only enhances one's ability to approach such hybidization attempts.Digital photography has enhanced my appreciation of all forms of photography and this book, and others like it, further fuel this love.Read, reread, and refer to this book.

One of my all-time favorite photo books
I've had this book for 10 years and would be heart-broken if I ever lost it. Coming Into Focus
This is a wonderful book that tells you everything you want to know about alternative printing processes.I used to have "Keepers of Light" but lost it, so I ordered this as a replacement.It contains everything the other book did, plus information on using digital technology.A real resource for any serious photographer who is a purest at heart and wants to keep the old traditions alive.
Great book
The author tells you everything you would reasonably want to know about the wide spectrum of non-traditional photographic methods.But not only does he talk about these alternate processes, he explains in step-by-step detail how to actually DO these techniques yourself.Great content, very well written.

An Excellent, Well Written Book
I whole-heartedly recommend this book. I also have "The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes" by Christopher James, another good book, but I always go back to "Coming into Focus". This book is laid out in a very accessible manner, each section is written clearly and concisely, and the processes are described so that you understand and can start experimenting almost immediately (once you acquire the necessary materials for the relevant process). Fantastic Find
This book is awesome! I wanted to purchase it at a major chain and decided to look here instead.I got 4 books for the price of one!I highly reccomend this if you are interested in excelling at your transfer techniques.

The only book on this you will ever need!
I've been wanting both of her books for awhile now and I finally splurged and got them both. When I first flipped through this book I was blown away and amazed by the content. This book is the number one resource for helping you along with your Polaroid SX-70 manipulations. She also provides some brief information ontransfers and emulsion lifts (If you want to know more you should invest in a copy of her other book "Polaroid Transfers". It is HIGHLY informative. The author guides you step by step and even provides some background information on how the processes were discovered. She also offers a lot of inspirational material in an advanced techniques section of the book. At the end of the book there are artist galleries with drop-dead-gorgeous work!
A Great Resourse for all SX-70 Manipulators!
I have been doing SX-70 manipulations for about 4 years and to this point have been totally self taught.I have looked at some galleries online and had previously wondered how some people were able to achieve such vibrant colors with their work, had their lines squiggle to such a great extent, etc.I now have the answers to all my questions.I am so grateful to Kathleen for writing this book (thank you!).

Excellent job writing this book.
I'm a novice who wanted to restore a whole bunch of all photos from family that my grandmother had in her atic, so I decided to buy Photohop by recomendation of a friend of mind. A nice book to have
It's comprehensive, it's well written and it is easy to follow the chemical recipes.
It's not for me
If you are a step by step learner don't buy this book also If you are not welling to spent hours daily to learn from it don't buy this book, its kind of book which requested by the teachers to there students.

Building a sink isn't for everyone, but...
This book is probably not practical for those who don't already own woodworking tools (i.e., sabre saw, circular saw, clamps, chisels, etc.). However, if you are looking for an excuse to buy some, here it is.Iactually built the sink and I have to say that it works like a charm, I useit constantly and the whole process of building it was gratifying.Thedown side is that I wouldn't say this is the way to go to save time ormoney.The time and cost estimates provided in the book are not veryrealistic. For the big projects it would be wise to set aside a weekend orso to complete them. You could probably buy a fiberglass or stainless steelsink on an online auction and spend roughly the same amount of dough.Ialso built the basic table, which I like very much.Probably the mostuseful aspect is that you can tailor the designs for your darkroom.If youget a sense of satisfaction from building things and you can't find theright equipment to fit your space then this is the book for you.

good reference book for starting a home darkroom
There are plenty of illustrations in this book, but they are only sketches or drawings.This book has some ideas that may be outdated or simply not economical. For instance, making an entire darkroom sink, painting it,preparing it for sealing, and all that, not to mention the worrying aboutleaks, etc. Could be better suggested that an economical sink under 100.00be purchased... Too much time and effort into something that"might" save you time and money isn't worth it for me. ... Read more

In Love with Photo Chemicals?
If so then this is certainly the book for you. If you are one of those photographer who does not enjoy the darkroom; does not like to take the process from start to completion; or perhaps just do not like to experiment. . . Then you may not enjoy this one too much. This book has alot of information. History of cool things!
You'll enjoy the info in this one. Makes for a heavy read.

A useful guide
For the budding alternative practitioner, this book is an invaluable resource.It is clearly and engagingly written, and covers the gamut of processes from simple salted-paper calotypes, through platinum/palladium and bromoil.Safety is emphasized, with an overview in the second chapter, and a chemical index with hazards in the back. A thorough list of sources for materials, other references, online resources, etc, is in the back.Read more

A Concentrated Introduction
There are a number of books that discuss taking a digital photographis image and using Photoshop to create wild abstract photographuic art. This book is different. It discusses using computer-based image processing in order to improve a hpotograph without substantially altering its content.

The Best Yet
I have several books on B&w photography and George Todd's The Making of Twenty Images is the best I've read so far. I particulary like the fact that he includes his negatives as he reveals what went into each photograph, from composition to film development, printing and mounting.

Something for Everyone
I got this book at the same time as I got Barry Thornton's Edge of Darkness.I found they were complementary is many ways.George Todd has been at this craft of making monochrome pictures for several decades, and his skill and picture and printmaking ability shine through.Mr Todd has got the picturemaker's trinity of 'tone, detail and texture' pretty much down pat, and the book gives us fine example after fine example of that.Wheras Mr Thornton in Edge of Darkness tells us as much about his heart and his head as about his superb pictures, George Todd has provided an extremely detailed account of each picture from before the shutter was tripped to when the print was ready to mount.There is something for everyone here - technicians, printmakers, photographers, and the house guest who simply browses a well produced book of outstanding images over a cup of coffee.They won't need to read one word - the pictures will speak to them.I like the book most of all because it showcases the ability of medium format so well.If the negative sizes were not detailed, I'm sure most would think these prints were from large format negatives.I'm glad I have it in my library.

great for beginners and advanced lith printers
Very well organized and written, this book is a must for beginners and advanced lith printers alike. I am new to the process and found the book was easy to follow with great examples. The author provided lists of supplies and suppliers to make it even easier to get started as well as charts of specific papers and the effects of various developers so the beginner would know what to expect. This is not just a how-to book, but instead the author encourages exploration within the process.
Complete, Well-Organized Lith Lesson. Stunning Examples.
"The Master Photographer's Lith Printing Course" is a beautiful comprehensive guide toLith printing. Not to be confused with ultra-contrasty lith film, Lith printing is a technique by which a print is overexposed and then partially developed in Lith developer to produce a print that is colored monochrome. Prints typically have black shadows, colored mid-tones and burned-out highlights. The photographs must be printed on lith or other suitable black-and-white paper, and the colors produced vary according to the paper and technique. Lith prints may also be toned for additional color effects. Lith printing can be done from color negatives, but normally black-and-white negatives are preferable. Nice to look at, but pass.
I think Tim Rudman is a great photographer and teacher. However, the whole point of this book is pretty thin. Back when I was in grad school, I thought I would impress Nathan Lyons by telling him that I wanted to do an entire portfolio in Bromoil prints. "At some point, you have to decide if you want to be a technician or a photographer." Was his typically clipped reply.Read more

Gorgeous Book with Great Projects
The photos are fantastic and very inspirational.It's well laid out and easy to follow the theory.I'll be buying more of Patterson's books.

Photography outside the box
What this book is at its heart, is a series of short essays on how to do art photography.It teaches you how to think outside the box in terms of how you compose a shot and what techniques you might use in setting exposure.Each essay or chapter include several photographic examples and you would be amazed at the photos the author makes using nothing but tin foil as a subject.This book teaches you that a photography can convey a scene or convey a mood or emotion and the techniques that you used to switch between them can be very different.

widen your horizons
Yes, photography is a real art medium and you can take it beyond literal representation and make it more expressive!Make your photography convey how a subject makes you feel rather than what that subject literally is.Andre and Freeman are excellent instructors and this book is wonderful and inspiring.Several different techniques in subjective imagery are presented, including multiple-exposure impressionistic images (with different camera movement techniques for different effects) and the aptly named dreamscapes using photo-montage.The explanations are good, and the techniques are not difficult, although they take practice to master.Don't be discouraged at first, keep experimenting! ... This book has everything, and then some.It will take you from not knowing anything to being a quasi-expert in a fairly short amount of time. Good book - too text bookish!
This is indeed a great book. It talks a lot about the basic photographic techniques and is a good read for a beginner. However, most of the book is limited to black and white photography. The book is also a bit out dated. Practical Introduction to Black and White Photography
The majority of the text concentrates it's efforts in educating the reader in the art of B&W photography.Color photography is briefly touched on at the book's end.The first half of the book deals with various camera systems, accessories, film choices, photograph visualization and film exposure.All of these topics are covered exceptionally well.The second half deals with the developing and printing process.If the prospective reader will not be involved in the developing and printing process then the Ansel Adams Book 1, "The Camera", and Book 2, "The Negative", may be better choices.However to receive the maximum benefit from the art of B&W photography one must eventually delve into the darkroom.
