4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Resource for Historical Costuming
I never thought I would ever sew. However, my brother and I got the grandiose idea that we would make ourselves leather buff coats to wear during re-enactments with our 17th century living history group. We needed a pattern and started with research at the local college library and found this book. Although neither one of us had ever sewn before, we were able to take the coat pattern from this book, adapt it to fit our bodies and sew a coat for ourselves out of buff leather. There is a whole chapter on 17th century clothing which has patterns for breeches, doublets, cassacks and sword hangars. It also has photos of actual museum pieces. If I could use the patterns in the book, than anyone with any skill will have no problems. This book is an good resource for those wishing to sew their own period clothing.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Source for Men's Clothing
I was a little surprised when I recieved this book that it is not quite as beefy as Norah Waugh's _Cut of Women's_ clothes.I was however very pleased with it's cotent.About half of the patterns seem to be taken frompre-1780s and the other half from 1840 on.This was a little disappointingas I was looking for some good Regency Jackets for my husband. There arehow ever several frock coats that I can easily ajust the cut to to get thelook I want. This is a great book as far as I can tell but I am stillundecided as to whether it is worth the steep price tag. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The End Of fashion
Difficult to give a review as I bought the book as a gift and do not expect any feedback as i bought it for a xmas gift!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for those interested in fashion
Teri Agins manages to write about fashion with authority and fluency and with no superfluous over the top 'fluff'. Although some bits may seem a bit too technical and not of much interest to some, overall it is a very well written and sophisticated piece of work about the workings of the fashion industry. After reading this book it is hard to look at clothes the same way again! For me at least, it really changed my perspective on the idea of fashion in an enlightening way, though it did strip away some of its glamour.
5-0 out of 5 stars Names, Names, Names, dahling
I'm glad that I finally got the book after seeing Teri on the Oprah show and the Metro Channel. Her reporting genius and years of experience show as she single-handedly unveils this industry which too often tends to believe its own hype. It was especially interesting to read her accounts of the ways in which the homogenization of large American retail stores has bolstered designers' marketing and branding efforts and subsequently, and ironically, led to the death of fashion. This read was especially timely as I watch my hip trendy New Yorker friends spending $200 on banal denim pants in assorted hues. My only regret is that Teri never once conceded that designers are artists; her approach was strictly business and on those terms this book is brilliant. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars patternmaking,a reference for fashion design
a great book, very informative, little pricey though, but worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Old styles
I am disappointed in this book. The patterns are very old styles.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and Concise
I have not bought the book as of yet but I was privy to certain things that went into the book. Sylvia was my patternmaking teacher. She was working on this book while I was in school and all the students anticipated its release. Sylvia's teaching style is thorough and concise and so is this book. I recommend anyone interested in learning the right way to make patterns should purchase this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Love Denim
Anyone with an interest in denim will find this wonderful book to be a very easy and enlightening read. The pictures are all bright, clear, and of high quality. There are several great images of musicians and celebrities wearing denim (Elvis, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis) as well as close-up shots of vintage jeans (The first known pair of Levis!). Not only are the pictures great, but the book is written in a manner which is easy to digest. The subject ranges from the history of denim to current trends. It also contains a glossary of terms for quick lookup so if you need to be reminded what selvage or sanfordized is, it's there for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Woman as an idolized goddess again...
The Christianity and even more the Islam have abolished to idolize woman as a goddess. However this was the daily use in the Greek, Roman and Egyptian religion (sorry to remember, that the Aztecs tore the heart of young virgins out of the live body). Newton has reversed this development - he told us, to idolize women again. I visited the Helmut Newton exhibition A GUN FOR HIRE in the "Museum for Photography" in Berlin, near the Station ZOO, Jebens-Street 2. Sometimes I thought Newton is cynical, contemptuous against women, emphasizes the power struggle between the sexes too much. After the reading of his autobiography I thought: "What a humorous, witty person! " After having the pleasure to watch the film of his wife on his work, I thought, oh God, I get dizzy by this hand-held shaking camera. After the reading of the museum catalogue A GUN FOR HIRE I always get quiet again. Newton was skilful. He regarded himself as A GUN FOR HIRE self ironically, as an unfortunately rentable killer because of the kind money. But if he had carried out a banal "killer" order with the necessary simple, most childish aesthetics guidelines for any fashion magazine, showing the models in a predefined wardrobe sales beneficially - then he afterwards extended the dialog with a lady in most cases after completion of this obedient work for the capitalist system of the chewing fan heating - then he enlarged the dialog into the direction of more human, erotic, adult and no longer infantile situations, real and no more prudishly, running free experimenting for new emotion and aura. The growing picture collection from the vermiform appendix after that official work peeled out that image, that unique art form, which everyone connects now with the name Helmut Newton - a milestone in the history of photography. Before the visit of the exhibition A GUN FOR HIRE (in the long night of the museums in Berlin, January 2006) I went astray in that nightmare of holocaust stele field in Berlin. Newton had managed to escape from the insanity of the Third Reich. Newton's work could have never resulted under the thumb of any ideology. At first in the private, thereupon in a society, where is the liberty to make something new, it was possible for him, to make what could correctly be described as "making a woman to an idolized goddess" again. A GUN FOR HIRE is the reminding bequest which, shortly before his death, he bequeathed to that town which had dropped him 1938. I hope, that Berlin people (and many more) will awake and learn, what he wanted to show...

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Newton book on the market!
Highly recommended for anyone who knows Helmut Newton only by reputation. This doesn't show his most graphic work, but it has a nice range of his early editorial photos, fashion campaigns, absolut ads. This book is a great example of showcasing Newton's talent as a photographer. Instead of focusing on his sometimes intense sexual images, this book focuses on the composition, layout and colors his photography had. Don't worry, you Newton-lovers, the sexuality is still here for all to enjoy.
3-0 out of 5 stars slightly disappointing
While i like HN work and always pick out his style even if i dont know a particular photograph, this book was downright disappointing. Its like someone assembled pictures which weren't good enough to be included in any of the other (previous) books just to sell it to suckers who will buy anything by HN. However, i absolutely adored the 4 or 5 pics of Monica Belucci and bought the book solely on account of them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DIESEL LOVERS OF THE WORLD UNITE!!!
In a sea of pop star denim brands, Diesel is the David Bowie of premium denim, sets while concurrently challenges the standard of the market, this anthology chronicles Diesel's history as well as owner, Renzo Rosso's colorful life. Inspiring and literally jaw dropping, this very 'Diesel' book needs to find a home in every denim head/advertiser/marketer/graphic designer's coffee table. An almost literal love letter with tributes from the Bono to the Dali Lama. Now if only 'Fifty' came with a pair of denim...

The book is great! It's totally Diesel styled, and gives many great information about everything concerning Diesel from the very beginning of it's founder's life.

3-0 out of 5 stars cool
this book is useful to those starting out in modeling. if you already have a contract i wouldnt reccomend it so much, but it has useful tips throughout, and anecdotes from real life models

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Book!
A must have for anyone who is wanting to become a model. This book offers insight information that is both vital and informative. The authors, Eric Bean and Jenni Bidner illustrate this book with fantastic photographs and beautifully written compositions of what should be expected by models and what is expected of them. I absolutely love this book and recommend that anyone who is even faintly interested in the subject manner should read this book. It is truely a fascinating read.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the basics of what it takes to become a model
It's fitting that art and crafts book publisher Lark Books should then move to a book on photographic modeling, Complete Guide For Models: Inside Advice From Industry Pros: it's a logical transition and offers the power of an art book publisher paired with the expertise of a fashion photographer and fashion editor. Models will learn all the basics of what it takes to become a model for the artist; from posing for commercial print ads to special opportunities for men, women and child models. Complete Guide For Models could have easily been featured in our 'Business and Careers' section, but is profiled here so artists and art library holdings will catch sight of it: it's an important, recommended instructional guide for the reference collections of artschool, artists and sculptors.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE BEST T-SHIRT BOOK OF THEM ALL!!!
I was surprised to find so many t-shirt books to choose from so I took a plunge and actually ordered three of them.TEASE was by far the most practical and inspiring book of them all.The best part about it is that it not only gives you ideas on how to turn your t-shirts into other types of shirts, but it has projects for turning t's into bags (my favorite idea!), skirts, scarves, even seat cushions!I was amazed to find one scarf project that actually has you cut a shirt into thin strips and then knit them into a very cool and original scarf.I would have never thought of that! There are also much simpler projects, like a tote bag project that I finished in under an hour. The fact that the projects come from an assortment of amazing crafters from all over the country means that there are dozens of different styles and tastes represented, from classic and simple to slighty over-the-top (if you're in the mood for that sort of thing...).If you're looking for endless inspiration on what to do with those t-shirts that you just can't part with, this is THE book you NEED!!

2-0 out of 5 stars t-shirt overkill
The reference to craft "superstars" should have warned me off. The lowly T-shirt shows up as a placemat, a lampshade, a car-lot hanging banner, café curtains, and a rug - oh yeah, and a couple of overworked wearables, too. Tricky projects show off the wit of their too-cool creators rather than enrich the lives of DIY readers.Who needs it?

5-0 out of 5 stars a good teaser
In addition to the great ideas for transforming your t-shirts, it introduces you to real crafting superstars and a whole new world of inspiration. It goes beyond wearables and has great photos and directions. This is a must have book for anyone interested in alternative crafts. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Extravagantly beautiful, but pretentious text
The photographs of Christian Dior's magnificent creations are breathtaking. But the writing is unbearably pretentious.Unfortunately, this characteristic is a hallmark of most academic writing. But get the book anyway.Dior was an artist, a seeker of Beauty, and we're all the richer for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Treats Dior's work with the reverence it deserves...
Focuses on the romance and idealism of the artist and his art rather than just functioning as a clinical review of his work... as of this review date, new hardcover copies are still available from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Online Store. I've purchased two.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book
I just started learning how to render with markers, and this book comes in handy everyday!Great, but simple explanations on how to render different fabrics.Never confusing.A must for every beginning fashion illustrator!

2-0 out of 5 stars Childish illustrations
I bought this book because it had such good reviews, but I was very disappointed with the contents. The title is fashion rendering with color, but most of the illustrations are black and white (very misleading). Plus the illustrations don't look very professional in my opinion. If you have no drawing skills but want to become a fashion designer, then this is the right book for you. Otherwise, don't buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for starters
Bina Abling's Fashion Rendering with Color is a great source of information and consultation for starters on fashion design, and drawing in general.I've just started fashion design lessons, and I do not have many resources regarding this specific subject in my country, so I turned to Amazon.com to find the best, and I did.I've presented a collection of 30 dolls, using some of the styles on this wonderfull book, and I'm doing great, so I recommend this book to anyone who is starting, or just wants to know how to render with markers, and other materials.

Fantastic! Christian gives a guided tour of his own work process, and personal advice as a professional designer. It's like reading his diary, or suddenly finding yourself as his closest confidant and assistant designer! He shares his own impressions of himself and his work. He shares details of how his personal life and his career developed - even from childhood- what inspires him, and what are his influences. Four stars because it's not a quick reference: dates, sources, locations not readily found.

5-0 out of 5 stars East of Eden, 2.0
An ironical fact about most pop-culture phenomena is that it is based upon "something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue." "Suicide Girls" is all of the above, and more, which may be why it has been such a smash in the marketplace of pixilated pin-up porn.
2-0 out of 5 stars So & so
I spect more from this one. Is simple, small pictures, a medium quality book.
1-0 out of 5 stars its still selling your p***y to the public
This is so terribly overrated. A bunch of random photographs of girls with piercings and brightly colored hair; the kind of thing that was "cool" in the 90s. These models claim to be on the site because its tastefully done and its a way for them to express themselves and that they feel more self-confident. It must be very empowering to sell your p***y online, whether you are some "art-school girl with glasses" or the average blonde, fake-boobed porn actress. It all boils down to the fact that these girls are getting naked for money and that guys help themselves to short-lived pleasure while looking at their website and books. Now thats so...different. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars don't buy!
This books illustrations are dated and not very good. I only bought it because I seen, " Fashion Illustration Next" in the bookstore and thought it was great. I went on amazon to find it and this looked cheap to add so I did thinking it would be equally as impressive. I got it today, and am returning it today. Unless you are really interested in how much fashion illustration has progressed within the last 6 years buy the new edition, and leave this one in the discount bin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inpirational
Its such a wonderful book. I am a fashion major and its nice to see other people's fashion illustration. I have struggled to find my own drawing style and this book has definately helped open my creativity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
Although, this book may just seem like a pretty picture book, it is a really good reference if you're trying to discover a style/technique of illustrating. As a fashion major, this book comes in handy to see how other artists approach the figure and to learn a variety of ways to illustrate instead of referring to the same textbook croqui. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent.
This is a lifestyle guide, which is sophisticated. Not at all like the Machiavelli Suit book where complicated writing styles and dodgy advice overtakes the look.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Classic Essentials that Every Man Should Have
This book is widely regarded as something of a classic - and for good reason. It has been translated into no less than 17 languages. Of all books on the subject it is the most encyclopaedic in thoroughly covering everything from shaving, to suits, to sportswear, knitwear, dressing gowns and much more. The whole book is crammed with succinctly presented information from start to finish that it becomes a perfect reference book to keep on the shelf.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gentleman: A timeless fashion
This is by far the best book I ever read about male fashion. It is true that it dwells almost exclusively on British tailors and shoemakers, but the truth of the matter is that they are simply the best. If you can afford a shirt from Pink or turnbull and asser, or pair of shoes from Church's or alfred sargent, you will be catapulted to the circle of the exclusive. I strongly recommend this book to every gentleman seriosuly interested in improving his wardrobe and image, with no hesitation. ... Read more
