4-0 out of 5 stars Dior
Francoise Giroud's book about Christian Dior is one of the best studies of the great couturier and his fashion house. The text is highly informative and there are plentiful illustrations and photos (color and black and white) of Dior's creations, clients, friends, homes, etc, in short everything that was part of his life. There is also information about the designers who worked for the house after Dior's death, Yves Saint-Laurent and Marc Bohan.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING
I purchased this book to support the Textiles Syllabus in Australia in Costume. The pictures are amazing and show the detail and can only truly inspire.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dressing Ep I, II and III!
The book is a must have ofcourse, but I did expect a LOT more.
5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book
Wow! This is a truly magnificent book. The quality of the photos is extraordinary. It's terrific to get a close-up look at the craftsmanship and materials used. The clothing of Parts I-III are shown in great detail. (I just got the book yesterday, and I spent half an hour looking at Padme's wedding dress alone!) My only complaints are a)the costumes of IV-VI do not get the same exhaustive documentation and b)some space should have been devoted to closer looks at various weapons. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Audrey style
I think Audrey Hepburn will be eternally remembered not only as one of the kindest and most generous women that has ever volunteered for Unicef, but to us women as a timeless, most graceful role model of style. She's the perfect embodiment of the adagio that in elegance less is more. Her streamlined, understated style that yet made one of the biggest statements in fashion history continues to be an inspiration to us women of the 21st century despite the forty years that separate us from "Breakfast at Tiffany's." Clarke Keogh's book captures Audrey's spirit like no other. It is beautifully illustrated and there are contributions from Hubert de Givenchy, Ralph Lauren or Gregory Peck, among other people who generously share with us souvenirs of this angel of grace that they had the chance to meet in person. Her wardrobe and makeup are meticulously reviewed and this book will prove an invaluable tool and source of inspiration for all those women who want to bring more elegance and refinement into their lives. One of the best assets in your style bookcase and one that you will gladly pass down to generations of graceful women to come.

2-0 out of 5 stars the pictures are wonderful, the writing horrible

4-0 out of 5 stars The photos are superb, AND...
It's putting the quirky details together that makes this book more revealing than the standard saccharin drenched puff piece.

5-0 out of 5 stars Through the Keyhole
Have you ever walked or driven past someone's home and wanted to look inside?Looking through this book is a bit like that on an international scale. The book is a beautiful work of art in itself, the presentation top class, the paper quality excellent, the binding great. It is packed with marvellous photographs of interiors, accompanied by descriptive text. What it isn't is another of those boring interior design books, filled with rooms that are painted offwhite, with large mirrors, potted palms and overstuffed sofas. This book is interior design getting real!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive and Sensitive Survey of Peoples and their Habitats
Stafford Cliff has collected images from all around the world and with the help of superb photographer Gilles de Chabaneix has done what few other innovators in design have done - created a book that is, yes, about design, but is equally about how climate, place, ethnicity, tradition, cultural philosophies, and history inform the decisions people make about their living environments.

5-0 out of 5 stars GreatRead, Interesting Book
Being a 3rd generation garmento, I found this book very interesting.Denim has gone from being a blue-collar item
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
James Sullivan covers the history of jeans from the creation of denim to the Levi's I'm wearing today. The book is well researched; full of great information and things I never knew about the jeans industry. It brought clarity to much of what went on in the late 70's and early 80's when designer jeans came about.A fun look at America's cultural history.Really a great read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sticky Fingers
Regardless of what denomination Brigham Young was when he did or didn't call jeans 'fornication pants', jeans ARE sexy and--as everyone knows--sex sells. Sullivan does a great job of tracing the arc of this most iconic piece of American clothing from simple work gear to high fashion (and big business) must-have. A stylish and functional bit of Americana, much like jeans themselves; I love the blue type and design. My only complaint is that "Jeans" doesn't come with a soundtrack, but then again I guess we each have our own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Words Can nOT Describe.........
As a Parsons fashion design student I have found Nancy Riegelman's book to be very helpfull.Words can not describe the amount of inspiration and resourceful information that Colors of Modern Fashion holds.I fell in love with her books when 9 Heads first came out.My mind was blown away when I first caught glimps of her new book Colors of Modern Fashion.Apparently the rest of the world has caught on the this great book because I have seen it throughout my travels in London, Paris, New York, and LA.I have always dreamed of having the skills to make fashion figures. After using 9 Heads and Colors of Modern Fashion I can draw a fashion figure with effortless ease. The book takes you step by step from the basics of the 9 headed fashion figure to the detailed advanced rendering of clothes and fabrics. This book is very chic and stands a good investment for anyone who is interested in fashion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Exquisite
This book is perfect for anyone that is really interested in fashion and drawing. The diversity in chapters helped me to gain a better understanding of what it takes to skillfully draw. I have really been honing my skills, combining different techinques that are presented in the book and I am amazed at the complexities that using markers offers.Hands down, it is a strong book that encompasses all the skills needed in learning a subject, the writing accompanies the drawings with ease and excitement.I honestly can't wait for the next book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nancy has done it again! What a great book!
This is Nancy's 2nd book and is it ever great. The illustrations are marvelous. The techniques she discusses are easy to understand and use.I stayed up all night just looking at the beautiful drawings. This is definitely a must have for all illustrators and for people who love to draw. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Behind the concept curtain
I'm reviewingthis book not as a fan of Dolce Gabbana, which I am, but as a photographer who loves their ad campagians, especially those of the past decade. WOW. Unlike the movie business, not a lot of behind the scenes stories are written about the production of the biggest fashion ad campagians with the top photographers. I was surprised to find that Steve Misel shot most of their recent ones. More than that it is great to see the drawings for how they were developed and what the thought process was. PLUS the Photos, which looked amazing in teh magazine really shine when printed on high quality paper. A great book, but a bit pricey unless you find a killer deal on a used copy, which I did.
5-0 out of 5 stars All I can say is 'Wow.'
I did not think that anyone could put together such an amazing book. The book starts off with the spring/summer collection of 1986. It features runway photos and describes every season. The photos include advertisements, editorials and runway photos. The quality of the pictures are amazing! There is a page dedicated to every season where Domenico and Stefano are interviewed and they describe the theme of the season.

3-0 out of 5 stars Actually a little disappointed
I bought this sewing guide looking for the advanced time-saving construction techniques used in the garment industry. Sadly, I didn't find them in this book, despite the glowing reviews. It is a good textbook and reference manual on basic sewing. The information is clearly presented with excellent and plentiful illustrations. However, the skills depicted are ones I mastered quite a while ago.I will keep this book in place of others in my library, but this was an expensive experiment.I would not recommend this book to anyone over an intermediate skill level.

5-0 out of 5 stars bridal gowns; how to make the wedding dress of your dreams
Very informative I will use the book alot

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource
I am in the Bridal Alterations business and also sew weddings on the side. I am just starting out and wanted to learn more about the insides of wedding gowns. I have used other books by these women (Fit for Real People) to teach sewing classes in local fabric stores and knew they'd put out a great product. Inside they tell you what fabrics to use for interlining, interfacing, step by step construction, patern fitting, and more. There's even a checklist for constructing a wedding gown and yardage and instructions for making petticoats. I REALLY recommend this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Guide, But Know How to Sew
I was toying with the idea of making my own dress and bought this book. The author is very knowledgeable and the text is well-written. However, if you are a novice you do not want to ACTUALLY attempt a dress without either a.)guidance, or b.)other books to walk you through. This is written for those who truly understand patterns and sewing. However, if you don't sew it is a great book to understand what things you should be looking for if you are having it made by a dressmaker, and the types of fabric/necklines/veils, etc. If you're expecting a step-by-step this is not the book for you. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A huge disappointment to genuine fashionistas
I couldn't disagree more heartily with those who recommended this book as a "beautiful coffee table book." At this price and with this subject matter this could have been a truly amazing look at the history of the House of Chanel and it's transition from the early years of Coco to the present leadershiop of Karl Lagerfeld. The text is mediocre and the photos are terrible. The general visual quality of the book is absolutely reprehensible. The dresses are all reproduced in a poor quality "Liz Taylor in the White Diamonds commercial" fake fuzzy lens. There is not one really great photo of an actual garment in this entire book. As someone who saw the actual exhibit the book is based on, I feel the Metropolitan really missed on this one. The exhibit itself was magnificent, this poorly concieved book is a complete dud. Save your money for one of the many other books detailing the life and work of Coco Chanel.

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Revelation and Devastating Indictment
This is rare book on the subject of menswear, a book that is intelligent, witty and above all totally revelatory. It is worth having on your shelf to read and read again, for it only gets better with time. This is a book for any man who has ever dismissed elegant dressing for men as a pastime for effeminate fashion fops. Indeed, even if polemic is something Antongiavanni largely eshews, it is the most damning thing written about the state of the current textile industry as has ever been penned. For it reveals a nasty secret that fashion industry fops want to keep a secret from you: that there are two models in the textile industry. The first is the traditional one where quality texiles sell themselves. The second is one based on the realisation that if you invest heavily enough in advertising you can get away with peddling frightfully mediocre rubbish (lower quality fabrics with shoddy construction) in grostequesly affected styles that will be out of date in a season. Sadly. these couture houses such as Armanis, Versaces, Dolce & Gabannas, Cavallis, Hugo Bosses of the world along with countless others base themselves on the second model. The average man understandably prefers to wear slobwear than to become their wretched fashion victim, for he intuitively suspects that the emperor is naked. Here Antongiovanni dares to expose the truth of the matter and becomes a saving grace for those few men willing to be led out of the ridiculous and nightmarish world of catwalk costume back to a world where elegant dressing was as much a masculine imperative of a self respecting man as is today driving a nice car, owning his own house, sporting the fanciest gadget whether that be electronic, or a sports item. Ultimately that leads us to the ancient art of the bespoke tailor, able to dress to flatter even the most unflattering of figures. The exposition in delightful, pointed and witty prose of everything to the difference between the cut of suits from Savile Row to those of Rome and Naples, the difference in different fabrics such as wool, mohair, and cashmere are all given here in exquisite detail. The in depth knowledge of tailoring technique and textiles on display is simply breathtaking. Indeed if you asked any top bespoke artisan making shirts, suits or even shoes, they will tell you that this is truly a book that cuts past advertising hype to get to the heart of what makes up true quality in menswear. Some of the reviewers here on Amazon writing rave reviews of this book are themselves professional tailors, and Antongiovanni has clearly consulted professionals with respect to many of the subtler technical details.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sartorial Splendor tucked in Verbal Wit
This book will either confound or delight, depending upon one's tolerance for highly stylized prose and the literally superficial topic of men's attire.
5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious
I have been sampling 'The Suit' in small doses for the past few months since I first got it, not because it's unpalatable, but because it's delicious and like a fine meal, I don't want to finish this small book too quickly.
