5-0 out of 5 stars great book pretty pictures
this is a great book for anyone who's into sneakers.you don't have to be a "head" to enjoy the pretty pictures and the interviews.it's great that the author talked about where to hunt for sneakers in various cities around the world.now if only the book was bigger in size so the details of the sneakers can be appreciated more.... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars asset to hiphip culture
this book is awesome is very informative, and if you know anything about the hip hop era then this book should be added to a persons collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clean, refreshing visual piece...it is obvious the authors did their sneaker research
I own several sneaker books including SOLE PROVIDER and Bobbito Garcia's WHERE'D YOU GET THOSE (both of which I recommend) and I found this book to be a refreshing alternative. Written by the guys behind CROOKED TONGUES (which is a fantastic site by the way), this book is meant for the sneaker collector who appreciates the aesthetic qualities of a shoe, rather than for someone who only buys into the hype and player endorsement. For practically every sneaker that is showcased, at least one clear photo, brief history, and random fact dedicated to each shoe. I also appreciated the effort by the authors to distinguish original editions from reissues. In addition, the sneaker "dictionary" and collecting/cleaning tips sections are great as well.

Editorial Review

A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, the future began. The future of fashion, that is. Of course, it wasn't quite so long ago (it was the 1970s), and it wasn't quite so far away (it was Milan, Italy). Right there and then, the world witnessed the birth of the sports coat. This one jacket spawned the beginnings of casual dress and semi-androgynous fashion. This may not seem so radical now, but think about what came before. Look back to the Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Historical Reference
This is not a typical fashion tome. The authors have traced the historical influences of Mr. Armani as well as validlly documenting his contribution to history (both in terms of fashion and in sociological influence). The photographs are well chosen and show the broad scope of his work. The detailed description accompanying the photographs of the actual museum exhibts are informative and succinct. One unfortunate choice was to include blurbs by celebrities. These comments offer nothing in the way of understanding Mr. Armani's work and are unnecessary. That minor annoyance withstanding, this volume is a valuable addition to any library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book!
I love this book so much that as soon as I had a chance to look through it I called up my best friend and told her she had to get herself a copy, #1 because it's that good, and #2 because I'm not willing to part with mine, even for her!Now if that's not a glowing recommendation, I don't know what is!
3-0 out of 5 stars I was disappointed
Based on a newspaper article, I expected more on how to dress to minimize the appearance of "fat", so I was disappointed that a lot of the book was how to stand (pigeon-toe'd?!)and what angle to stand or sit. These may be of benefit for photos, but I cannot see myself deliberately positioningevery moment of my day.How would anything get done?

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a help
This book did not help me one bit. The book pretty much said to go out and buy a new wardrobe and not wear granny [...]... What are the people with a low-budget income supposed to do? They won't have enough money to go buy new clothes. It was a waste of my money, and I wouldn't recommend this book to anybody. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
I really enjoyed this book. It is like a guilty pleasure. She bugs you to a point cause she is really something else I cant explain it. She is obnoixous, loud, makes dumb decisions, etc but you cant help but love her. I read the book in like 2 days. She really did have a interesting life. The sylvester stallone thing bothered me. I can see why he left her. Not right! But this book was good and if you are into hollywood gossip and that sort of stuff you will like it....I will be buying her other book. I am sure it will be great

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy and Entertaining

4-0 out of 5 stars Still Relevant For Today
I was never a fan of Malloy's books when I first read them in the 1980s and 1990s. But I must admit that his basic principles hold true today. Classic attire is best for interviews and companies (such as pharmaceutical sales) that are still traditional suits-only fields. He is also correct when he says that the fashion industry works against professional attire for women, and that if you are excessively stylish in a corporate setting, you will lose credibility. Changing fashion styles are an incredible waste of money. However, you should disregard the outdated suits, rigid hairstyles and hard attache case in favor of more contemporary classic styles. A better book for that is "Dressing Smart" by Chic Simple Author Kim Johnson-Gross. Moreover, if you work in a creative field, you must not follow the navy & white starched formula of dressing--this could get you demoted. Malloy does mention this point, but doesn't really advise for creative jobs.

5-0 out of 5 stars read it and do what it says
All women should read it and do what it says.As a manager, I know what high importance is placed on presentation. In the workplace today, people have become too casual. Why not do all you can to earn more money, gain more respect and be percieved optimally as a professional? It is very easy for women to make wardrobe mistakes at the office today because of the sexy and casual fashions we see in all the stores. This is a bible for the working woman!

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic, Timeless Advice
This new edition of "Women's Dress for Success" covers a lot more than clothes and accessories, and is a treasure trove of advice for any woman interested in self improvement. For most of us, there is usually room for "image enhancement," in how we present ourselves to the world, as our way of dressing and speaking, etc. all sends a message. John Molloy's recommendations are also helpful if you are on a budget. His "fabric test," color combinations, and style tips will save you a lot of money, and you can even do well using his guidelines shopping in a thrift store! You will no longer buy without planning, the things in your closet will mix and match properly, and you will not buy something "just because it's on sale," and find later that it doesn't really look good with anything else you own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Balance of Text & Photos
This review is for the paperback version of the book, which I loved. It has a lovely balance of terrific photos & explanations of the various sources of the featured gems.It serves as a nice beginning reference when you have heard the terms sapphire & red sapphire (huh? I thought red gems were rubys or spinels) and would like to know more about which gems are related to others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning photography; an amazing collection

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classy & Entertaining Addtion to Any Woman's Business Attire
Jennifer has created a classy way for today's independent business woman to share her appointment book with clients and other professionals she encounters each day. What a great conversation starter! What Realtor can resist one of March's shoes, "Soled", which depicts a for sale sign as a heal, with keys on a gold loop for the ankle strap and a white picket fence for the buckle? Or the advid golfer... "Shoe Wanna Play a Round?" with all the golf tees, holes, plaid, etc., Or my favorite, the "Moo Shoe" where a cow with a leg as a heel, rope and bell for ankle strap, is completed with utters!Such imagination!Fantastic for those of us who need some levity with our days!Thank you for the weekly approach to your calendar. It will get much use with my home business and I am convinced my clients will enjoy making appointments while admiring your artistry and humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing gift - several steps above a standard calendar
This calendar feels more like a coffee table book than the average calendar, with vibrant and clever images that make it impossible not to turn the page to see what the next one is. Each image has a clever pun relating to shoes (A nun-themed "Mother Shoeperior" cleverly has a ruler as the heel of the shoe). Images like a black-and-white "Moo-Shoe", a patriotic "Shoe-S.A." and currency-themed "Shoe Me The Money" join other images timed with relevant calendar events: October's "Dracshoela", and for December a Hannukkah-themed "Shoedaica" and Christmas-time "Muletide Greetings". It's a great gift for friends, family and co-workers or anyone who loves shoes, fashion or just a clever joke. The book format conceals the spiral and its raised/beaded images on the front cover convey that this is much more than an average calendar. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From shameless to daring, smart to dowdy, hideous to amusing
Ms. Brannon is a professor, and this is a textbook.A supurb textbook that unravels, analizes, graphs, charts, and narrates the dynamics of consumer choice in light, effortless prose. It is an epic study that brings aboard the great cast of characters who have devoted their lives to staying a jump ahead of us.(The bibliography is 16 pages long!)Whom do they watch? How does a forecaster know when an innovation has good "legs"?Is it in tune with the times, or a counter current? All this and more is told as Ms. Brannon peels the onion that is fashion.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Queen's Closet
All of the books on historical fashion published by the Victoria & Albert Museum are beautiful, and this is no exception. I saw this exhibition while I was in London this summer and I was pleasantly surprised at liking the book because I always assumed that publications wouldn't be able to measure up to seeing the garments in person. Instead I found that the book gives me a chance to appreciate each beautiful garment at my leisure, and read the history about Queen Maud (which gives a context and feeling of `realness' to the clothing). The book features Edwardian coronation gowns (literally, Maud wore one for the coronation of Edward VII, her father), sportswear (riding gowns etc.), and dresses and suits through the late 30's all beautifully photographed and described. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it instead of "French Chic"!
I probably own a hundred "how to dress" books, and this is one of my favorites.Sommers' previous book, "French Chic", may accurately explain how French women dress, but the tips she gives and the examples she uses would make you a laughingstock in America. (One photo presents a plump woman with waist-length hair, huge sunglasses, and a beach towel thrown over her shoulder like a shawl. But she's not dressed for the beach -- these accessories accompany ordinary day clothes. The message seems to be that the French find eccentricity the height of elegance.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the fashion enthusiast!
If you are interested in fashion, you will love Italian Chic. This out of print book like its cousin French Chic (also written by Susan Sommers) is rapidly becoming a sought after collectible. Though French Chic has been listed for prices well over $100 Italian Chic can be found for much lower. Yet of the two books, my preference is for Italian Chic. The book written in 1992 describes how to incorporate Italian style secrets into simple to follow fashion guidelines. You will learn where to scrimp, where to splurge. How to update what you own. How to travel light and wrinkle free. Make a shawl work for every occasion. The pictures in the book are contemporary and work today. Unlike many fashion books where you are supposed to pick your look like romantic or trendy and dress accordingly Italian Chic is classic and works forever. You will learn how to work your wardrobe to your best advantage. Much is covered in this detailed book, everything from the type of jeans to wear and where they should hit on the ankle to the classic sunglass choice. There is a whole section on makeup for maximum effect. The Italians put the emphasis on the eyes. And information on how water helps the Italian skin glow. Excellent resource for those that want to look fabulous!

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth finding

4-0 out of 5 stars Colorful World
I had the good fortune to run into this book on vacation. As soon as I got home I ordered both Fruits and it's companion. As a self motivated student of fashion and all of it's off-shoots, I immensely enjoy this book. It is a plethora of individuals, and not a duplicate picture in the book. It features mostly youth (teenagers) but that is to be expected. But it doesn't limit itself to just the very young. There are a few family photos and "older" individuals. It is a monument to anyone who creatively clothed themselves. It gives brief details: name, age, point of fashion, fashion brands and makers. A lot of the "point of fashion" remarks seem like nonsense at first. After reflection, I think they are just 'smart allec come-backs', much like what you'd get from someone in the American Gothic culture if you asked one of them why they wear black all the time. Even with brief details you can start to see patterns in clothing styles seperating themselves out from one another. By age particularly, and by preference to designers within a group of friends. The only problem I had was reading some of the bubble gum colored print that it was done in.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and well laid out
This book features pictures of details from extant ethnic costumes from more than fifty countries. Next to each picture is a flat (line drawing) of the whole garment, which allows you to see construction and some stitching details, as well as the overall shape. Descriptions alongside each flat include mention of the gender, class, time period, and ethnicity of a person who might wear the garment, as well as a context in which they might do so.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, excellent text
This is one of the most gorgeous and inspirational dress/costume books I've ever seen. The photos are clear, detailed, and focus on all the right things. If you're looking for design ideas or just eye candy, this fits the bill. It's a pity amazon.com doesn't remove the one-star review. His complaint has nothing to do with the book itself--just poor HTML linking on amazon's part. This book deserves to have a solid five-star rating. (6/9/06--I'm happy to see the one-star review was removed)

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational for sewers and designers of Wearable Art!
Dress in Detail from around the world is one of the most inspirational books I have purchased. It expands your paradigm for designing your own patterns using the line drawings of these costumes. The embellishments, closures and use of multiple fabric combos is endless. The designs are simple and yet elegant depending on your choice in fabric.I feel they are adaptable to many figure types. I loved the focus of detail on necklines and cuffs as well as closures! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars MY MOM BOUGHT HER FIRST BIRKIN FROM HALEY'S COUTURE, AND ANOTHER FROM MIGHTY KISMET AFTER READING THIS BOOK!
This book helped my mom and I understand the different handbags out there that are really looked at as high fasion. We are both into fashion and after reading this book, she bought two authentic Hermes birkins - WOW!! - from Haleys Couture Galleria aka hermes galleria and MightyKismet. Both excessively nice ladies. Awesome news for us. We recommend this book as it helps you learn all of the styles out there and is really like one big encyclopedia. Awesome. Thanks.

4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK - BOUGHT BOTH HANDBAG OF THE FABULOUS BY ROSLYNN MATTHEW AND THE POWER OF THE PURSE
BOTH GOOD...I'M NOT SURE WHAT PREVIOUS REVIEWER IS REFERRING TO...THESE REVIEWS ARE DEVOTED TO THE BOOKS DESCRIBED, NOT HANDBAGS PURCHASED ON THE SIDE. PLEASE STAY FOCUSED ON THE BOOK. BOTH BOOKS WERE GOOD, HOWEVER, I FOUND THE PHOTOS IN THIS BOOK VERY HELPFUL. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written book
Unlike the other birkin book that Roslynn Matthew of Haley's Couture wrote (incidentally her company HALEY'S COUTURE and HERMES GALLERIA have scammed us and others of THOUSANDS of dollars, selling FAKE HERMES birkins and advertising them as authentic), this author's book is written professionally and even provides more photos than that Handbag of the Fabulous book (which is a ploy to get more clients). This author has no hidden agenda and has covered a lot of bags, not just one particular subject. I like this book and its highly recommended. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I ordered this book because of it's 5-star rating. When it arrived, I found the purses to be more artsy/craftsy where I was expecting something upscale and designer-like.My fault, the cover photos should have given me a clue.Anyway, I was disappointed and ended up returning the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas from simple to intricate
This book had purses for everyone, sewers and non-sewers, old and young, small and large. The purses are hip and the patterns are easy to understand.I already had some of the patterns but they even presented them in a better way with great step-by-step COLOR photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
I never bother with reviews, but this book was so wonderful that I couldn't help myself. It was inspiring, full of wonderful, clearly photographed instructions, and left this non-sewer feeling as if I could really pull these off.
