5-0 out of 5 stars BREEZY, DOWN TO EARTH, AND BURSTING WITH DISH !

5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, funny, logical and honest narrative
i deplore fashion and beauty magazines and I have never read Lucky- haven't read Elle in years- so I am in the minority of readership. However, I liked the sidebars especially, finding them full of practical information. As well, the dishy gossip on corporate politics a la fashion- I thought were very realistic without being cynical or cliched. The writer seems down to earth and perceptive, and funny and warm. I breezed right through the book and may just become a fan. the beauty business is HUGE and nary a modern woman of any ilk can be considered on the sidelines- everyone brushes their teeth, washes their face and hair- this is not an elite category- Indeed the items needed for absolute basic items constitute a hefty enough portion of take home pay and information is power- we need "scientists" like the author to navigate through the aisles of the real world

3-0 out of 5 stars It Must Be Nice...
...to be this author.Godfrey-June's book starts strongly, with a brisk introduction to her Devil-Wears-Prada-ish experiences at Elle magazine. The dishiness wears off, however, when the author goes on about her reluctantly privileged lifestyle in her yuppie-hippy town. And a privileged lifestyle it is, with all of the free products, fashion shows, etc.(Instead of bemoaning the hundreds of beauty products that clutter their homes, why don't beauty editors donate unwanted things to a local women's shelter?)This book is a fun read for fans of Lucky magazine, and the book definitely promotes the magazine. The sidebars are actually fun additions to her book, and her writing style is fresh and casual.Overall, a fine beach or bus book; something to breeze through and return to the library or pass on to someone else.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Shoe Book
I've owned this book for a couple years now and am looking through it again. I've given this book as gifts and I show it to a lot of the people who pass through my life. It's just too much fun. As a wee "coffee table book" it has sparked countless conversations and has even helped settle a bet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Yum!
Sandals, platforms, heels.A real feast of footwear is shown within the pages of this compact(but quite thick)book. Great fun to flip through and a great resource for research as well..!

5-0 out of 5 stars tiny package, HUGE fun
This book contains fluent, erudite words about shoes, but who cares? The point of the book is the luscious photography -- beautiful, enticing images of a large number of shoes. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Freaks
Another amazing collection of eye candy fashion. I love the full page color photos and the brief descriptions. It is interesting to see how a sub-culture of fashion in itself fractures off into seperate catagories. Like L.O.L.A., european punk, goth, hippie, couture, et cetera. All amazingly creative free spirits. This is a great buy if you like cultures and community, fashion design, or interesting coffee table conversation starters. I love the book "fruits" as well, they are like twins, something to be kept together. I would love to see what changes in style another ten years has brought to Japan. Hopefully I'll run accross that book next. The only irksome bit was the bubblegum text color. It was hard to read at times. And my eyes aren't too bad.

4-0 out of 5 stars Polynesian Historical Documentation
This is an excellent book as a historical refernce for Polynesian Tattooing. It offers nothing new but puts the historical information from previously published books on the subject in one book.I reccomend it for anyone interested in Polynesian tattooing as not the definitive, but a good book.I foucuses too more on Maori Tattoing and less on others but that it has alot and shows the that this is a book that doesn't have much new content, just a combined resource. This is also a good reference into Polynesian culture bcause the Tatau was not a fad, or in anyway negative in Polynesia it was interwoven inteo life as a positive art form historically and today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needed Book
At a time when there is a cultural rage for "tribal tattooing,"there is a scarcity of materials on Polynesian tattooing. This book finally addresses that need. The book contains many historical photographsof examples of 7 different polynesian culture's uses of tattoo.Briefsummaries examine each area's history and methods for tattooing. The bookis very attractively done.Recommended for anyone serious about tattooing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeping tradition alive

5-0 out of 5 stars Masks of Bali
Masked drama performances have been an important ritual on Bali for over a thousand years.Slattum presents a gallery of fifty significant, visually stunning masks photographed at both private collections and in Balinese museums.Explanatory text accessible to Westerners delves into the artistry involved in creating these intricate pieces, their symbolic and cultural significance, and the elevated role they assume in village ceremonial life. These magical, totemic masks have come to represent Bali to many visitors, who are spellbound by their exotic, gargoyle-like demeanor and their entertaining presence in evening dance spectacles (and in every art and craft shop window all around the island).

5-0 out of 5 stars this is the best book out there!
I am so happy to have this book - it gives information in detail about every material known to man to make costumes and props. It also gives great detailed instructions on uses for these materials and wonderful examples at the back of the book.It is helpful to have some costume/prop experience and there are companion volumes referred to if you don't, but this is THE book to start out with.

4-0 out of 5 stars So many ideas so little time
Not the best for what I do but oh the ideas! I was looking for more historical information and ways to research but what i got in this book was a great trade-off. Basic and advanced information of costume construction and how to get a look when the materials you need can not be found. Awesome. I use it over and over!

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless source of creative inspiration and information
For persistent and passionate costumers of all kinds, this book is a costuming index.A college textbook, it has chapters on a wide variety of topics, including millinery, shoemaking, pattern design, fitting and tailoring, underpinnings, wigmaking, fabrics, materials, and equipment. It focuses on sturdy theater costuming techniques, information that is so useful and applicable in many other areas of costuming. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Imagination in action...
How about photographing what your mind sees? That's the journey Lachapelle takes us in every picture. Lachapelle, along with a couple of other great photographers, is what I would call an acquired taste and a bi-polar one it is. Either you love it or you hate it...
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
I bought this book after being a fan of Lachapelle for a few years- and i've already got Hotel LaChapelle. This book doesn't really compare that well to Hotel Lachapelle, but its a good book to have if u want to document his work pre 1996, and although it has some stunning photographs, i was more impressed by the (presumably bigger budget) photos in Hotel Lachapelle, so. in a nutshell; if you trying to decide between this and His second book, get the second one, but this isnt a bad book to have.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit different from his more recent work
I purchased this book after viewing David Lachapelle's website, and while it is certainly a decent collection of photographs, the photos lack some of the style that Lachapelle's more recent work has. If you are a fan of the work found on his website, then I would suggest Hotel Lachapelle instead of this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must for sewers
If you want to produce shirts that do not look home-made, you really need this book in your library.I also have the video that goes with it and would highly recommensd that as well.He does make it look very easy! The special feet used, like the felling foot and the rolled hem foot, are not easy to use without practice! The author uses some great techniques that changed my sewing for the better. It's a fantastic book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic for shirt makers
This book should be in your personal library if you create shirts and blouses. It gives a thorough discussion of sewing techniques, fabrics, and fit.

4-0 out of 5 stars For passionate shirtmakers
This is a great book for people who've wanted to pull apart a commercially made shirt to see how it's made and replicate it. The information is VERY detailed and the author is VERY passionate about shirtmaking andthe various techniques. This is a plus and a minus for the book - to get the best out of the book you really do need to READ the book; there are no quick fix solutions, just fabulous detail. So, if you're looking for a book offering quick, concise information this book is NOT for you. Butif you'repassionate about producing a professionally made garment and enjoy learning detailed techniques buy the book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

David Bailey's name is synonymous with the Swinging Sixties, when fashion photography became big business, and the man behind the camera could become as famous as the celebrities who posed for him. And Bailey was the most famous--the East End boy who became best friends with the Beatles and the Stones, the husband of actress Catherine Deneuve, and lover of model Jean Shrimpton--chronicling them all in a series of unmistakable, unforgettable shots. David Bailey was the hippest photographer during the sixties!! He took pictures of sooo many great icons. Anywhere from Models(Jean Shrimpton, Twiggy, Penelope Tree), Movie Stars(Peter Sellers, Catherine Deneuve, Micheal Caine, Terrence Stamp, Julie Christie), Bands(The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who), Designers and Artists...Mary Quant...Andy Warhol...even notorious gangsters..The Kray Twins!!!! 3-0 out of 5 stars Magic gone like Biba's gone
I, too, was there in the late '60s, living and working in London with Biba just across the street beckoning daily. The text in this book is informative and interesting to anyone who has done retail or wants to know about its vagaries, and the photos are superb. But it is one person's collection, and for me, the visual essence and excitement of Biba is missing. Maybe it's the fact that there are no customers with their enthusiasm, or maybe I'm just missing the amazing array of color and design that hit you at each entry into Biba's, which the book does not really capture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliving the magic!
As someone who was "there"-- a young New Yorker working for the fashion press in the late '60s, frequent traveler to London (first stop: Biba), habitue of Bergdorf's Biba Boutique for Mahogany lipstick and lucky enough to have a British friend sending catalogues and clothes, I can honestly say reading Alywyn Turner's book on Biba was like living it again. He accurately and lovingly recreates the temper of the times and the uniqueness that was Biba. He also takes you way behind the scenes (where even Barbara Hulanicki did not go in her autobiography) as to the crash and burn in 1975. I did not "get" Big Biba either, and have always felt a little guilty about that. Nice to know I was not alone. Both a beautiful coffee table book of gorgeous photogaphs, ephemera and loving detail shots of the garments. I understand Barbara was grumbling about this book and did not cooperate with the author. I think she missed being part of a great tribute. Oh yes, I never kept any of my Biba clothes or stuff. You can imagine my regret!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bibalicious!!!
This book is the ultimate (and perhaps only) true documentation of the entire Biba experience. Barbara Hulanicki was a true visionary who actually preceeded Ralph Lauren in creating a total lifestyle shopping environment. Her unwavering vision ultimately grew too big and needed outside financial backing to grow and even survive, leading to it's untimely demise.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good premise, but needed more
I was excited about this product since It wasn't just T-shirts. Some of the ideas were interesting, but several of them have been done before.
3-0 out of 5 stars skip it...there are better books out there...
I bought this book, as well as Generation T and Tease all together. This book is the worst of the three. Poor illustrations, no actual photos, poor directions-too much background on beginning sewing techniques, and the projects for the most part are just plain boring.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very cool sewing
I used a couple of ideas under the pants section. I hemmed my pants keeping the original hems. When the weather got warm, I opened the sides of my jeans to create godets. One day I saw this denim skirt with a vabriant redtriangular fabric in the front...well I took out my book (under SKIRTS) and created my own skirt with an old pair jeans.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was anxious to get my hands on this book and wondered if I should just buy it online without seeing it first.I'm glad I didn't, because when I checked it out at the library, I was truly disappointed.More than just make-up application, I was looking forward to seeing a variety of models that accurately displayed the world's women. The book showed models of color but not in the variety of shades that each ethnicity comes in.For example, the Asian models were shown stereotypically with light beige skin. No brown, Southeast Asian models were represented from countries such as Cambodia, Burma, Indonesia or Thailand or if there were some that did they looked lighter than most of their countrymen. The same with Latinas. Some of the models that were listed as coming from Latin American countries such as Brazil, Puerto Rico or Mexico looked nothing like the majority of Latinos from those countries. One model that supposedly was from Brazil looked like a poster girl for the Aryan nation!Blond hair, blue eyes and all!
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful guide for all levels
This book was recommended to me by a Facialist at Elizabeith Arden Red Door Spa.Its great for all levels from beginners to the more advanced!!It has a wonderful section on skincare products based on your skin type. Also, if you were ever confused about your skin type, it clears up any confusion in a very simple way. The other sections are also comprehensive and serve as a good guide......the makeup applications and techniques are explained and detailed enough to pull if off on your own.If you like make-up an skincare, this book is it!! ...
