The Fashion and Fantasy of Bob Mackie
Wonderful book!Such gorgeous pictures and I loved the Bob Mackie story too.My only complaint is that it just wasn't long enough.....hoping for a sequel.

Grin & Bare It
I've been taking photographs ever since I was a child, but as I've grown older, I've become bored with clichéd architecture and nature pictures.I needed something to renew my interest in photography, and that's when I turned to nude models.
Pro Digital ... Nude & Glamour Photography
This book offers numerous good pointers and advice on choosing location for setting, lighting, and composition.I had a tough time getting past the author's ideas of what constitutes subtle and glamourous.He may have strained something patting himself on the back for his accomplishments.Then again, this IS a very subjective matter and I may be a wee bit opinionated.The author's idea of sensual and galmourous is a bit more on the "Penthouse" side than I find 'sensuous.'Nonetheless, it offers some good insights and is a worthy read.I also purchased Garage Glamour by Rolando Gomez and found that even more helpful.

Well, the times are changing for Mr. Miller, but for Dito, the best bookwriter we have seen in a generation, things are changing too... for the better.So far he has won multiple awards at Sundance, but will he dance his way into the sunset? The film wasnt entered in Cannes, but Cannes you imagine a better movie if it did? There's a high expectation for the release of "Saints", but Dito's books and movieSaint gonna leave our heart anytime soon!We all know and love Robert Downey, but when Dito is Downey aint out! And how about his co-star Rosario Dawson? We should start callin her Rosario Dawsome, not for her looks or acting, but for being part of such an excellent, award winning vehicle!

Now you ask: Why?Ok, here goes! You can't stop this train rolling! I can't wait for the movie. It is, as they say in ALL the major newspapers of this land, the greatest movie of our generation. Ebert and roper all agree: Two thumbs WAY up! There I said it. to the BS artist below who says he grew up ina greek and italian neighborhood: i say this: "Blow me". You got beaten up in that neighborhood.I have written way more booksthan dito. Most of them better, some just as good. He is still a decent person. I can't deny facts in black and white. All I know is that if Robert Downey Jr and Rosario dawson are in it, it is a guaranteed block buster.

an important book but hard to read
I love fashion theory writings. I really do. And i know this is a seminal text in fashion theory. But man, oh man, is it a doozy! I'd give this book a 5 for the concepts, but a 1 for the ease of understanding. It is really hard to plough through - it is translated from French so features some tortuous sentence structure, and feels like the writings of a guy who really loves to read his own work; the higher the word count the better. I feel that it is work like this that leads people to view academic writing as necessarily dry, dense, verbose and pretentious, when there are amazing theory writers out there who are accessible and interesting to read.

For any reader who has had a father that read *Playboy* "for the articles," even Barthes' highly analytical approach to the relation between image and text--which he insists *produces* Fashion or "realclothing"--can be funny.I.e., reading in translation the Americanreader may not identify so much with the eccentricities of Barthes' styleso much as his choice of subject.Barthes' work remains entirely relevant,even though the book was published in 1967--the decade where fashion modelswithered, along with any grand sense of ethics on the part of commercialartists, clothing designers, and filmmakers, down to nothing.PerhapsBarthes would say this Nothing was a *commentary.*Perhaps not.Butcertain details of Barthes' analysis hold very interesting still:forexample, the fact that Barthes refers to the way the"written-garment" in a layout calls attention to specificportions of the "image-garment" as "amputations" (15).Read more

Like your fairy godmother explaining good shoes
I was hopeless; I wore comfortable... shoes usually from Payless. Nothing wrong with that until I was bored and waiting for friends at a bookstore and saw the pretty red cover of this book and briefly read bits and parts. Left the store without buying it; but it had some strange hold on me. A month later, back in the store I picked it up again to read bits more, but again, left without buying. The few parts I read had me. I had to go back and buy it. So strange to have to buy it; like an addiction.

Beautiful resource for forties fashion and sewing
This book begins with a lot of information about sewing pattern companies, sewing in the beginning half of the century, and fashion changes during the forties that are worth the price of this book.The second half is allreproductions of the fronts of pattern envelopes which provide inspirationfor design as well as pointing out how much more advanced the average sewerseemed to be in the forties compared to today.

Blahnik by Boman
I just happened to be in Selfridges/London last year, coinciding with Eric Boman and Manolo Blahnik's book launch. There were queues and queues of eager fans lining up to get their newly purchased books autographed by the fashionable duo. It was all very civilised, even though security guards were holding back the frenzied mob, while Boman and Blahnik relentlessly signed with tireless good humour and charm.
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
The genius design combined with amazing photography and styling make for a journey of beauty.A must have for the collector of fashion and photgraphy books.

Nice to Have book rather than a Must Have
From a broad perspective this book is helpful in delineating the various periods of costume.The patterns are useful, but not plentiful.
Essential for Costumers and Fashion Designers
This is an excellent book all around, with highlights including dissections of period garments with simple outlines of pattern shapes. Though the patterns are not on a grid, they are accompanied with a scale and can be decently eyeballed for a quick project. Beginniners will be inspired and the advanced will have a handy quick reference guide. A good pattern book, and a nice read too. Anyone serious about costume or garment contruction should have this book.

Basically Important
This is the first costume text I purchased (even before knowing I was going to go to school for costume design), and even after receiving and collecting loads of other texts on costume and the history thereof, this is still the best basic book I've come across.And, yes, I actually read it instead of just looking at the pics (of which there are many, many, great examples of historical dress).Although not entirely scintillatingly written (hard to do with a sometimes dry subject such as costume history, it has to be said), it is full of information that I wouldn't have otherwise known (and I've been fascinated by clothing all my life).Read more

Very informative
I am a 44 yr old mom, I'll be getting my first tattoo tomorrow night. I'm excited, still a little nervous, but a lot better informed about what will be happening since I read this book. I'd suggest it to anyone about to get a tattoo or just in the planning stages.

Just What I Needed
I bought this book and read it cover to cover before I got my first tattoo (three weeks ago at age 35).I wanted a tattoo, but I had two problems: I am afraid of needles and I like to know what is going to go on - no surprises.
This book was much better than I expected...
I have several tattoos, including large ones that required multiple sittings.I would like to think I know pretty much all there is to know about getting a tattoo, but man, I learned so much from this book!It is well written, easy to read and full of funny facts and trivia that I had to share with anyone that would listen!I would suggest this book to anyone, from someone looking to get their first tattoo to veteran tattooees and even tattooists.(Okay, I am making up words I think...)GREAT BOOK! ... Bang for the Buck
I first saw this book at a tattoo shop.I started looking up all my tattoos and found that I was actually right about most of them! I bought one and haven't been able to put it down.If you're looking for some big bang for your buck, you can not go wrong here!Since I had already seen a copy, I knew exactly what I was getting.There's about one drawing for every 3 or 4 entries.The entries are short but enough to let you know if you should be getting that tat or not.

If you are considering for public library purchase
There are no photographs in this book.There are black and white drawings illustrating SOME of the ideas in this book.
Marginally helpful for the neophyte
Yet another mediocre book on the art of tattooing. If you're looking for in-depth coverage of tattooing, its origins, processes, etc...you're out of luck. If you're looking for good pictures of interesting artwork...you're out of luck.

If 'unuseful' were a word, I'd use it.
I am a fashion designer who was looking for some good resource books to help with figure-appropriate designs.I came across this book after a long search and thought I had found gold.Unfortunately, it was not what I expected.I was really disappointed with the line sketches used to explain clothing choices and found those designs to be VERY outdated- especially considering the second printing was in 2002.For example, I could not disagree more with the advice for rectangular-shaped women- that they should opt for sack dresses that ignore the waist, rather than trying to create one.
Excellent
This bok with it`s beautiful drawings adds dimension to it`s material. This is a must for people who want to look their best and also a great book for clothing designers as weel as image consultants.

Valuable for a seamstress
I found this book six years ago in the libarary.I took copious notes from it over the next few years I checked it out.I finally purchased it and with every reading get more tips for style.I wish I had purchased it sooner.

The One that I've been waiting for
Ever since I saw Episode One I have been fascinated by the costume designs of the Star Wars universe and finally here is the book that shows just how special these costumes are. With large photographs of the costumes and detailed close ups that show the attention to detail.
The Fabric of the Galaxy!
This book is above and beyond excellent. From the way that the book is packaged, presented and written, not to mention the tangible supplements that are exclusive to this edition - such as the cloth swatch from Darth Vader's cape - what a thrill it is to actually own something that has literally been a part of the Star Wars universe!
Bar None
You can buy whatever book you want on the Star Wars films, but not having this one is a crime. Photography is amazingly clear and detailed, the inserts are awesome, and the swatches...forget about it...they are priceless.

Planning a medieval Party?
If you are planning a Medieval Celebration of any kind this is a great book to buy. My Fiancee and I have been looking for medieval books to plan our wedding by and I stumbled across this one its been very helpful and I'm sure it will get alot of use. It has many tradations recipes and lots of fun games a must have.

So-So Information for Event Planning
My fiance and I purchased this book as we are planning a medieval wedding. The title and description of this book implied that we would find lots of valuable information on that topic. Well, we found lots of valuable information for feast planning, or putting on a re-enactment (a la Society for Creative Anachronism), and very little concerning period wedding traditions. The most interesting parts were the recipes/redactions and the instructions for medieval dance steps. There are also several pages that contain sheet music for period songs. If you are looking to put on a reenactment or feast, this is the book for you. If you are looking for anything else, I suggest you look elsewhere. ... Read more

Not what I expected...
I've heard about this fashion photographer so when I bought his book, I expected models and beautiful pictures. The book was over 100 pages long but half of them were blank! Also, many of the pictures are odd, like a person, naked in blue paint. There was another pictures of a finger in red powder. The best picture is the cover and that's it. If you're expecting models and designer clothes, this is not the book for you.

i loved this book. yea, shes fake and everything(hence the title). shes a bitch, and very blunt about things. but thats what makes her funny. shes so honest about how she feels and doesnt care what others think of her.i dont know. i guess if you cant handle all her bluntness then you'd write a bad review. i LOVED it though.
