Fabulous
I absolutely loved this book.Du Plessix Gray describes her parents' lives with insight, intelligence, honesty and humor.She offers us a behind-the-scenes look into a world that its inhabitants were obsessed with keeping hidden from view.The degree to which her parents' lives intersected with the history of the twentieth century is amazing.Unlike most memoirs, Du Plessix Gray delves into the historical context of her parents' lives.The pace never lags; I was enthralled from the first page to the last.

Insipid People, Insipid Book
I wish life could give me back the 4 days of my life wasted reading this trash. Why anyone should be interested in these people is a complete mystery to me. They are vain, shallow, self-absorbed, artless and tasteless faux aristocratic social climbers with no redeeming value other than to be at the right place at the right time armed with a well-honed ability to suck up to those in power.

Kenneth J. Lane: Faking It
I really like many of the designs that Kenneth J. Lane has produced over the years and loved having a reference book of all his different styles and periods. The prose is of a chatty style that I usually am not too fond ofbut Mr. Lane is so upbeat and aware of the good fortune that has blessedhim that you can't help but like him.The photography is wonderful and itis fun to see photos of celebrities wearing his jewels. The book could havebeen stronger if it has an addendix of technical information about thecreation of costume jewelry or had a reference as to current pricing ofsome of Mr. Lane's vintage pieces.But I had many a fun evening lookingand reading and will definately keep this book available for several morereadings.

Nothing is perfect
I have to say I agree with (most) of the other reviewers that the photos are of excellant quality, the women are beautiful and it's for a good cause.The only slightly disturbing thing is that the amount of skin shown seems to be related to the "accepted" beauty of the model.By that I mean the professional models were all fully naked and obviously quite comfortable being so; while some of the other ladies were photographed covered up (although obviously naked).It would be interesting to know if the model was ill at ease in being naked or the photographers were sub-conciously suggesting a more covered up shot.Either way it's a shame that the likes of Sarah Ferguson was hidden under some sort of blanket rather than uncovered in the true spirit of the book.
Awsome work
Not only is this book for a good cause, It is also amazing. The photography is outstanding and I am a photographer. It is all in very good taste. Beautiful Work!!!

Very basic photography quality. Not very professional.
I was very disappointed in the quality and compositions of the photographs in this book. This book was published for a good cause but one would think the "professional" photographers would be more creative in their props and lighting. Save your money. Don't buy this book. ... Read more

good advice, cute story, excellent pictures
Basic hair care/styling advice throughout the book, very good for someone who wants more general knowledge on hair products, styles, how to take care of but it wasn't very detailed.
a bit daring
the text in the book was quite helpful and the artistry of the photos were great...but the fact of the matter is, someone would have to be crazy or else realllly daring to try some of these hairstyles: think teased huge, feathers sticking out of the head, chopsticks-overload giving a general porcupine look to one hairstyle. as inspiration or perhaps wild runway looks they're wonderful, but i don't know anyone who would ever attempt to wear one of these styles in public.keep that in mind.

A magnificient book
This book is magnificient. I'm pretty good at styling my own hair, but this book gave such excellent guides, I would definitely recommend it. What I thought it lacked was more information on where to get hair extensions and indepth info on how to put them on yourself. We all want to look like our best and look different from our daily look and hair extensions make the difference between slight difference in appearance and incredible difference in appearance. I finally found a site worth its salt too, for anyone like me who wants the most.

Easy steps that improved my photography 100%
I shoot models for a modeling agency in NYC. I was happy to see a lighting book that specifically adressed models. The lighting set-ups were easy to understand, and very specific. I learned how the authors produced a clean even "Beauty Light" that makes the skin look radiant. Now i know how they shoot those make-up ads. This lighting is also great for everyday portraits. The lighting set-up made even my family portrait look amazing.

Good for beginning photographers....

I happened to come across this book in a recent trip to Barnes & Nobles.Why was I there?Well, I've been curious for some time about fashion photography and the world it encompasses.I deal, for the most part, in cinematography.However, any great technician becomes aware that lighting has many facets.I was interested in understanding its role as far as "beauty" lighting is concerned.I figure what better place to start than Fashion Photography!I purchased this book because of its in-depth look at lighting set-ups complete with diagrams and pic-by-pic comparisons.I have to say, this books strongest feature is its accessibility.Rarely does a book/manual such as this go so far in-depth while still maintaining that you are learning as you read on and any dogmatic terminology would only confuse you.Furthermore, it doesn't bog itself down with glimpses of its own superiority.There are no egos here.This book can easily be used by a working professional or picked up by an amateur photographer and have them well on their way to a successful career in fashion photography.Highly recommended. ... Worst purse making book ever
I don't know who the folks are who've posted the lavish comments about this book, but at the risk of being witchy I have to wonder if they actually used the patterns and instructions in this book.
Bags With Style and Then Some
I purchased both "Bags With Style" and "Bags and Accessories With Style". I just have to say that the titles are an understatement.They should have been entitled "Bags of Elegance and Sumptuous Opulence", or something along those lines.I knew just by looking at the covers of these books that Ms. Kimura was an incredibly talentedwoman.However, I did not expect to find each and every page exploding with such gorgeous and innovative pieces.I found myself reading (and re-reading) each book cover to cover.I then proceeded to methodically go through the resource list in the back of each book, while online, to determine just what I needed to get to work, creating my own "bags with style"!I look forward to future publications by Ms. Kimura with great anticipation.Thank you Stephanie for sharing your creativity and extensive knowledge!I'll never look at a purse the same way again.

Excellent photos, difficult reading
Although the photos of beads are excellent, I found this book far too much like a PhD dissertation, with the feel of a synthesis, having substance but written in a format which was difficult to read. Bibliographic references imbedded in the text just add to the unreadable style. The text is painfully lacking in the kind of information I appreciate, such as dating, geography, and clear references to the individual beads presented in the photos. And references to values of beads in dollars has no relevant meaning unless there is a time reference. As a reference book I would rate it of minimal worth. As a coffee table amusement it is acceptable, but would need far more photos to make it useful for that purpose.

Beautiful Book But Not For Beginners
This is a beautifully written, beautifully illustrated book, however, it is definitely for the advanced bead collector.Its main focus is on beads the average person could not find or afford. I am a beginner in the bead collecting world and needed a book that was more of an identifying guide.The chances of me running across a bead that was illegally excavated from an archeological dig in a foreign country are slim..and I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway.I'm returning the book and continuing the search.

A stunning work of art.
This is a work of immense proportions. Robert Liu is both a scholar and an artist.This is a work which draws on both sets of skills, and the result is wonderful.For bead lovers it's a definative work.As a scholarlypiece, it likely has material of interest to those interested in arthistory and world culture as well.It's an important book and one thatwould be sorely missed if it ever went out of print--I say this as onewho's passed on books like this, only to search the world over for themwhen they were no longer available...get this one now. A Beautiful Depiction of Grace Kelly's Wedding Dress
This book gives a very detailed representation of Grace Kelly's Wedding Dress. It also gives lots of details of the events leading up to her wedding day.It is not a biography of her life.It focuses on her wedding day and the events leading up to it with the wedding day itself being the culmination.

Grace Kelly - Icon of Style
I was a bit disappointed when I received the book as I thought it would have more colored pictures of her wardrobe. Many were in black and white. The photos of her wedding dress were lovely though -- I guess that was the true focus of the book.

i think this book does not give us a different view about Grace Kelly. It is only a book related to the wedding dress and some miscelaneous comentaries about her life. You can find some good photos about Grace, but nothing else. If you are a great Grace fan like me, perhaps you would like to buy next book about Grace : Grace Kelly, a life in pictures, by Pierre Henry Verlhac.

As someone interested in "militaria"i ordered this massive volume(s) sight unseen on a hunch.Quiet a risk considering the cost.But it was a winning bet.Although not the "be all end all"on the subject(that would take many more volumes)this hefty work comes close.DPM stands for disruptive pattern material,the British definition of camouflage.Who would want such a work?More people than you might think.From those with an interest in military subjects to fashion,art,music,biology....you name it.This is not a dry military history.Not by a long shot.This volume should be named"everything you ever wanted to know about camouflage but were afraid to ask for fear of being labeled a warmonger".My criticisms about the text right away.As an "art book"the author Hardy Blechman goes to almost ridiculous lengths to state his anti war(make that anti military)views.He must have feared(perhaps rightly it must be said)that any serious examination of the subject matter would bring about the wrath of the "artsy set".Nonsence.This is an amazingly entertaining work.Put it on your table(a sturdy one)and amaze your art house chums and even your local NRA members.This book will amaze most everyone.Anything you ever wanted to know about the use of camouflage in todays global culture.And yes,it takes a book this big.The art and science of camouflage in nature,art,history,fashion,music(yes music)toys,furnishings,you name it.If you are a military clothing enthusiast(or a "geardo"as we are sometimes called)do not expect a military style monograph.This is an "art book"by artists.If you can put the books leftish tilt in perspective(even when it might seem self rightious)even you will be entertained by this 2 volume set.Thats right.As if the main text wasnt big enough(did i mention it was big?)you also get a smaller companion volume thats is a catalog of almost every nations national battle dress.If you are an artist type(slickster,fashionista,alternative culture vulture)you will be amazed,i promise.Throw a party at your loft/studio and invite your black clad"mod"friends and maybe the marine vet and deer hunter on the block for a showing of this book.Sit back and let the discussions unfold and entertainment ensue.This is a big(oh lord its big)and heavy(just try to curl up with it)and yes,expensive book.But you will not be dissapointed. ... A great vintage children's clothing reference book!
This is a very well written book with excellent photographs. It is a must for all lovers of antique children's clothing.I recommend it highly.

The Well Dressed Child, A WonderfulInsight Into The Past.
This is an awesome book from cover to cover. I was enchanted with the text and the many fabulous pictures and have read it over and over again. I especially loved the Christening section and drooled over the pictures of the many exquisite gowns. I am thrilled to have this beautiful book to add to my antique book collection. I have found the author Anna MacPhail also has an equally superb web site (www.[...].com) which I have started to visit on a regular basis.

Anna MacPhail's book is a work of art in itself.Every page is glossy photo paper, and only one page has no photos.Each photo is in color, (even the black and whites are sepia toned), and some of the items are priced, giving collectors an idea of value.This book has very littletext, so if visual history is your thing, this book is superb. ... Well Put together
If you like Fashion Shots by Alex larg and Jane Wood you would enjoy this book. its a combination of Fashion shots and Photographing people (updated) One thing you may not like about this book is that they are several images that are the same in the previous book... So if you have Fashion Shots, Or Photographing People(old version) do not get this book. But if you did not purchase one out of the two... then its worth your money. boooooring...
I read this book and wondered how lame must someones' life be if they need a book to tell them to watch movies, look around their neighborhood to get ideas, oh and then start a creative file with catalogue pages and so on.
The Best Book on Style and Design - Bar None!!!
What a great resource for style and design ideas. I buy almost every book I can find on design, entertaining, fashion, etc., but there's never been one that has given me this much confidence to tackle those projects I have been putting off. Susie's style diva quiz (which I found on her website - free!) really helped me discover my style personality and helped me realize that my eclectic taste was okay. What encouragement. I especially love the "Diva Drills" at the end of each chapter. Very meaty and substantive!
