If pictures are words, this is an epic novel in the tradition of Dickens or Tolstoy. Read carefully and bring along the tissues so that -when you reach the final chapters -you won't leave the pages damp, as I did.

A View Inside A Shrine to Self

Beginner to Intermediate Book for great results.
This is a wonderful book for beginning and intermediate photographers who want to know the tricks of the professional photographers out there.Although this book could be useful to those with pocket digital cameras, I believe this book is best suited to owners of DSLR Camera's.

Worth the price
An excellent book providing all of the basic knowledge anyone could want on the subject of photography. A bit expensive, but the quality of the pictures makes it worth the price of admission.

Am I the only one who found this jumbled and confusing?
Sure this book has EVERYTHING you need to know about photography and how to develop things, but these people know NOTHING about layout design.I just don't know where to look, where to read, and what to do next.If I didn't have an instructor, I wouldn't know what to do with my camera.It is very hard to find what you need in this book, much less go through a chapter.For people wanting to learn about photography, may I suggest the much cheaper book by National Geographic?It has much more clearly defined chapters though it does not have as much information overall (for example, no information about how to develop film).

Do you need to edit and organize your photos? If you do, then this book is for you. Author Barbara Brundage, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that is intended to make learning Elements easier by avoiding technical jargon as much as possible, and explaining why and when you'll want to use certain features in the program.

What AGreat Trip down E Street !
This book is so much fun! It's sort of a "pop up" book for grown ups. The clever pull-outs, the repros of tickets & ephemera, the old newspaper clippings that show a YOUNG, YOUNG Bruce...it's all good!This is not only a very novel approach, but also an easy to read, informative scrapbook of Springsteen history.The wonderful, plentiful photos and out-takes include some superb shots (including the covers) by Frank Stefanko.

Very unique book that i highly recommend if you're a Bruce fan
i concur with the first reviewer - i too thought i had just about every book i could want on Bruce, but this one surpassed my expectations.Don't let the low page count deter you - this one is definitely worth the money.There are a ton of pictures i had never seen before (ones that very likely came from the band members themselves or members of their inner circle) and there are a lot of reproductions of interesting chachkies, clippings, documents, itineraries, setlists, etc. that are in little pockets throughout the book (akin to the inserts you got in the LP of The Who - Live at Leeds).The book begins with Bruce's first bands and goes all the way up to the latest reunion tours.The presentation is excellent - quality printing, binding, and beautiful thick stock slipcase.I paid around $24 for it and i'm extremely pleased - while not a narrative-heavy book like some others that run much longer, i'd rate this as one you'll want to add to your Bruce collection.Hats off to the author.

Gorgeous Book
I picked up this book years ago when it came out.Outstanding photographs throughout.Since then I married and moved a lot of my books into an office.I recently rearranged my office and found the Leibovitz book and looked through it again.I still am impressed with the images even after about 5 years of not viewing them.Really a time capsule of collected photos.

After September 11th, 2001, the Ground Zero site in New York City was classified as a crime scene and only those directly involved in the recovery efforts were allowed inside. The press was also prohibited from the site, but with the help of the Museum of the City of New York and sympathetic city officials, award-winning photographer Joel Meyerowitz managed to obtain unlimited access. Shocking with a presentation that brings a fresh unseen angle
The images of September 11th are ones that are familiar to anybody in the western world and beyond. The death tolls as well as the political and sociological ramifications of these events on the following years and years to come have also been the subject of much discussion. However the glory of Joel Meyerowitz's photographic collection is that it ignores all the larger political manoeuvering and focuses on the minutia.
A Fitting Memorial on the Fifth Anniversary of September 11:
We still struggle with knowing how to think about the events of 9/11/2001 - and with how to depict them in the popular media. The reactions to the films "World Trade Center" and "Flight 93" have been all over the map. For some, it seems too soon to reopen the raw wounds that the tragedies of that day inflicted on our national psyche. For others, remembering the events and trying to make sense of them is part of the healing from those wounds.

Excellent photography / digital camera instruction
I have purchased this book twice, it is an introduction to digital photography, particularly for the fixed lense Nikon SLR cameras (such as the 8700) and SLR digital cameras.If you have a simple point and click camera you will get some benefit from the book but not as much.
Great for beginner
Bought this book to go along with Digital Rebel XT purchase. The book has not disappointed. Explains everything there is from aperture, exposure, shutter speed etc in great detail yet easy to understand. Recommend it to beginner, intermediate & expert alike

A Spell Binding Read
I got my hands on a copy of this book last night, and found it addictive. I noticed the raves from presidents of NPPA, ASMP, and APA on the back cover, and was impressed. Reading it last night, the book met, if not exceeded, the expections set by such prestigious reviewers. It was very real world, with tons of examples of contracts, negotiation tactics (as the author negotiated assignments and stock sales you see the back and forth via emails), and advice on how to avoid the many pitfalls we face as photographers today. I am putting to use many of his suggestions and recommendations starting tommorrow! A definite MUST HAVE book!

This should be the book that every photographer should keep on his desk for guidence for all there photographic business.

Great technical information, very useful resource
This book covers everything you need from the technical aspects of setting up shots and planning your action.It uses storyboards as an effective teaching device to convey the basic and some more advanced concepts and does a better job than most of explaining the 180 degree rule.Negative reviews of this book state that it is too focused on the technical aspects of filmmaking and not as much on the people skills needed, which is true, but can a book really teach you how to talk to people?A great addition to any filmmaking library but would need resources for the non-technical aspects of film.You could make a great looking film based just on what is in this book, but it might not be the most thrilling.The writer does a good job of focusing on the work and not in telling his own stories.

Visualizing
This book is the only one I have found that goes extremely in depth into shot composition. Great book. However, if you are looking for a book that will take you step by step into how to acctually produce the movie, this isnt what you are looking for. This book is all about properly translating your vision to the screen, what works and what doesnt. Overall, this book was an amazing resource.

WHY???
Why is it that in all of these film books there is such a huge focus on storyboards? That's what a third of this book covers. I should point out that many directors, including the two greatest directors of all time, Elia Kazan and Stanley Kubrick, as well as Woody Allen, Bernardo Bertolluci, Sydney Pollack, and many more do NOT storyboard their shots. Even Welles, later in his career, admitted to making up his mind on the set, and Hitchcock, famously known for storyboards, only storyboarded the BIG shots, not the entire film. I just wish these books wouldn't focus so much on pre-visualization when many major directors DONT PRE-VISUALIZE AT ALL. ... Read more

My favorite photography book, bar none
Of all the books on photography that I own, this one is my favorite. Like me, the author is from the midwest so almost all of his photographs are of things out here in the midwest (which, of course, I'm able to identify with more). As such, this book allows me to be able to see the sometimes featureless midwest landscape in a whole new way. Even if you don't live in the midwest, there's still lots of valuable techniques in here.

Improved Vision
As a square corners and center of the frame type, thanks to Bryan Peterson, I am learning to approach a potential image with more thought as to a more creative and more interesting presentation for the viewer. His sample photos that support his teachings give me a chance to practice his style while I seek to find mine.

Excellent reference for the amateur
I am fairly new to the world of photography, and part of the fun for me is reading everything I can get my hands on to learn as much as I can about my hobby. This book is, by far, one of my favorites and one I would recommend to any do-it-yourself amatuer photographer. It's easy to read, it's not overwhelming (like some "technique" books can be), it's well-organized and, most importantly, it's easy to understand.
Useful and concise - I actually read the whole book
Ok. I'll admit it: I buy a *lot* of books that I don't read and sometimes just glance at and use for reference. I actually read this book cover to cover. It's short and it has a lot of good examples that illustrate what the author is writing about.
This is the one to start with!!!
I picked up this book after getting a new digital rebel xti in hopes of breaking out of the full auto mode. Heck I paid a lot of money for those extra features so I should know how to use them, right? Anyways, I am up to page 58 and I have learned so much already! I am out of the full auto mode and I don't plan on returning!! If you are lucky to browse through the book at a bookstore before buying, do so! You will see after reading only a few short pages what the rest of us are talking about here. The author does a great job!! All those buzz words like f-stop, aperture, etc. are explained in simple terms and make so much more sense to me now. Thanks to all the other reviewers for leaving their comments and leading me to this book. You really help out the rest of us!

Beyond art book, beyond photography
It is not really a book, but an art object: accordion folded and neatly ensconced in a box, its heavy cardboard structure makes it a durable thing, one that transcends the notion of a mere "book." It is an object of intrinsic beauty and the mere holding of it in one's hands conveys the good taste, fine quality, and the superb craftmanship that were blended to create PORTRAITS.
Many great portraits ...
... but it's not a book. I personally did not care for the strange format, which has a sleeve, a back and a front cover, and a sort of concertina arrangement of the intervening text and pictures.

'Portraits' was a beautiful composition of Avedon's work
Not only was I excited about the low price offered by amazon.com for this book, I couldn't believe the wealth of information it withheld. The book itself is innovating, working as an accordian-style setup with text on one side and full-size, beautiful portraits on the other. The written portions spoke of Avedon in his early years, what his inspirations were, and how the affected his work later on. As a young photographer, this was valuable information for me.

The Ansel Adams of Color Photography!
Galen Rowell pioneered "participatory (wilderness) photography," in which the photographer becomes an active creative participant in fine-art image making. An accomplished outdoorsman and adventurer, his deep emotional connection to nature pervades virtually all of his photographs. Another signature characteristic is his vivid use of color during the "magic hour" (at sunrise and sunset); indeed, it is arguably true that Rowell was as much a "master of color" as Ansel Adams was a master of black & white. (It is fitting that he received the Ansel Adams Award for his contributions to the art of wilderness photography in 1984.) The life of this extraordinary artist was cut tragically short in 2002 when the plane carrying Rowell and his wife (Barbara Rowell, herself an accomplished photographer) crashed as they were both returning home from a Workshop in the Sierra Mountains.
Nice for Galen Rowell Fans
Coming around 4 years after the untimely death of Galen and his wife Barbara, this book does not disappoint those who enjoyed his photography. I certainly do and have for many years. This book contains a lot of photos (over 175) from early stuff to photos from his last expedition for Nat Geo. Divided into 7 main sections, you will see many of the most famous of his photos but what I like is that there are photos in there I was not familiar with. I have nearly all of his books so I like seeing stuff I have not seen before. For instance a few climbing photos of Ron Kauk and Lynn Hill, or one of 2 skiers descending the Ruth glacier in Alaska, or one from Lake Powell. Also nice are the little spot essays of some of the photos such as one by his daughter Nicole about the Lynx photo from Alaska. I'm not sure the printing of the book is of superior quality. Some of the colors seem off and a lot of grain shows up. That really is my only complaint. I am very happy to have this book, although I would rather see photos from his latest expeditions instead of a retrospective.This book is certainly worth the money. ... Read more

Not Really Useful for the Users of this Camera
I picked this up based on the reviews here and prior to shooting with the camera. About half of this book contains beginning photography type information. I don't believe the owners of this camera are beginning photographers, and if they are there are better resources than this book. I also found the Nikon D200 user manual to be far more accessible and detailed and considerably more portable than this book. This book is written at too high a level to be useful in the field (and it's too big). It doesn't get deep enough into the menus, providing just a small paragraph overview. When you need to know how to quickly access menus, or discern what the menus allow you to do, the available options, etc., this book fails.
The best of the D200 books, I think.

The only d200 guide you need
There isn't much about this little guide to dislike. It's clear, concise and ultra easy to follow. Not only that, but it's a great size - you can stash it in your camera bag and carry it with you! I'm a dSLR newbie, so this wee guide was a relief. Loving it. Buy it. ... Read more
