2-0 out of 5 stars Caught my eye, then I washed it out
Really wished I could have liked this story. It had a good beginning and lead to some really great expectations. Unfortunately, it lead me the wrong way as I was severly disappointed in the ending. Just not my cup of tea. Friends of Marv, ask a friend to borrow first.

3-0 out of 5 stars always with the superheroes
I care strongly about stories. However, I am not skilled at appreciating graphic novels or comics as such--that is, when I read something like Ronin, I come away with strong feelings about its characters and plot, but with only a vague impression of the quality of its visuals. The story in this book frustrated me.It is angsty and epic in the way of so many other works that I, as a clever person who programs computers and enjoys science fiction, am supposed to love:Ender's Game, for instance.I have my own share of angstful memories and heroic fantasies, but I believe that there is much more to life.Geek entertainment feels stunted to me--it's always about urgent quests, just-off-the-mainstream gimmickry, and simplistic sentimentality cloaked in ugly cynicism. As far as I can tell, there is no reason for the protagonist in Ronin to appear as a samurai, except that the author thought feudal Japan was cool. It's unclear how the villainous power in this story could possibly have come into being. The author's rendering of the handicapped hero's formative angstful experience is hauntingly grotesque, but that character's eventual redemption is comparatively shallow and silly.Of course good wins over evil in a burst of something or other.Of course there is a girl; of course she is good, and of course someone falls in love with her and makes a huge sacrifice for her and refrains from sticking around to deal with the little messy details of a relationship with her.All of this is lame.
2-0 out of 5 stars I wish I enjoyed it as much as the others
I did not know what to expect when I bought the comic, which is a good thing.Frank Miller is one of my favorite writers and I loved his other novels such as the Sin City series, The Dark Knight, Hard Boiled, etc.I was dissapointed reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a delight!
To view the artistic talent of this amazing young lady is in itself a great pleasure, but to read her story, her rapport with God, to know that these parents have been stewards of such a great gift in such a way that Akiane remains humble and focused ... This lady and this book are simply one of the most enjoyable experiences in my life, and a bargain at this price, a temptation to send lots of gifts so that others can also enjoy this young lady's wonderful gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Insight
This is one of the most amazing stories! Akiane's art and poetry show insight from our Heavenly Father that we can all use. Akiane is an inspiration to Christians of all religions. God is working through Akiane, trying to tell us all something about faith and forgiveness. This book is excellent and I can't wait until her next book and more paintings!

2-0 out of 5 stars Leaves something to be desired
As a Web professional, I'm always interested in reviewing the work of my peers, seeing what I can learn from them. I visited the author's Web site and perused his portfolio since a look inside the book wasn't available here, and I was more than a little disappointed. The integration of his CSS/XHTML is flawed and it just doesn't display the way it should on the major operating system/browser combinations that it should. With this in mind, any advice from the doesn't hold much water for me. I was most interested in this book as a source of inspiration, and have found the Taschen series much more to my liking.

4-0 out of 5 stars useful book - good "jumping off point"
I was particularly interested in the templates found on the CD-ROM. As others have noted, these designs are created with nested tables. The art is created in Photoshop. Having "picked" at a couple of templates, I'm now seeing where the various images are and how to manipulate them. I wish, however, that the authors had used layers rather than templates. I'm finding that the best way (for me) to utilize these templates is as a basis for a new design by starting with a blank HTML page and replacing the tables and with layers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and up-to-date content

5-0 out of 5 stars Readers involved in comic history, evolution and art simply must have
Any involved in the comics must have ART OUT OF TIME: UNKNOWN COMICS VISIONARIES, 1900-1969: it celebrates the lesser-known work of Bob Powell, Astan MacGovern, Boody Rogers and others who proved eccentric but influential comic visionaries before the rose of underground comics in the late 1960s. These artists created their own versions of western, romance, humor and horror genres and worked within the confines of popular comics of their times to provide visionary works. Some became famous, others remained obscure. ART OUT OF TIME reprints complete comic book and strip stories: many appear here for the first time since their first appearance. A thematic organization allows for quick access while surveys of pre-underground stars makes for a winning collection. Another big plus: the strips appear in full color, capturing all the nuances of the originals and losing nothing in translation. Readers involved in comic history, evolution and art simply must have ART OUT OF TIME.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best on the Graphic Design Industry
The Best. It was so good, it inspired me to come back and write my first book review ever. This book answered numerous questions I had and confirmed just as many assumptions I had about the Graphic Design Industry. Shaughnessy has done a huge service to the graphic design world by writing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential that any graphic designer operating independently have this practical reference
Graphic designers love to talk about sources of inspiration, but less willing to discuss the basics on locating work, pricing, and how to handle irate or non-paying clients - so it's essential that any graphic designer operating independently have this practical reference. It's one thing to be creative; it's another to manage its business needs. How To Be A Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul provides tested strategies for setting up, running and promoting a studio - and working with clients and their common problems.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for graphic designers, must read for all design students
If you are in commercial art field, regardless whether you are in graphic design or not, you must read this book. It tell you everything you wish your design school teachers had told you about the business of being a commercial artist. As an art school instructor myself, I made this book into a recommended reading material for my graduating illustration majors. Just cross the words "design" in this book and write over "illustration" (or animation, advertising, or whichever commercial art occupation), and more than 95% of it works. It is because this book does not teach you the tricks and gimmicks, but teaches you the philosophy of the business of being a commercial artist. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The "pop culture engineer" work makes this worth buying.
The one show annual is widely regarded as 'the best of the best' in creative advertising. That said, this edition was a particularly good annual featuring some great work for playstation by tbwa paris, and the world famous 'cog' spot for honda by wieden + kennedy london. However, I was expecting to see all this in the annual. For me, the campaign that made this annual worth the purchase was a campaign that simply leapt off of its unassuming 514th page.Ironically enough, this advertising campaign was about advertising, directed at young people interested in the creative side of the business. As someone that currently works as a creative, it struck a particular chord with me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Featuring a foreword by General Richard B. Myers (USAF, Ret., Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff) The War Within: One More Step At A Time is a unique collection of G. B. Trudeau's Doonesbury newspaper comics that is not only humorous, but also cutting-edge relevant . The strips follow the daily life Vietnam, Gulf War, and Iraq War veteran B.D., whose tour of duty was cut short by a near-death experience, the loss of his leg, and perhaps most shockingly, the loss of his iconic helmet. Far more life-altering than the physical damage is the post-traumatic stress disorder that leaves him increasingly disoriented, hostile, withdrawn, and turning to alcohol to self-medicate. When B.D. is on the verge of mistaking friends and family for mortal enemies, the turning point comes when he overhears his own daughter say that she has become afraid of him. Help comes in the form of the local Vet Center, and the skillful aid of counselor and fellow Vietnam vet Elias. The War Within brims with classic Trudeau wit, yet also reveals the author's resolve to accurately portray the harrowing pressures America's armed forces are subject to during and after risking their lives in the service. Highly recommended. Proceeds from "The War Within" are to benefit Fisher House, a "home away from home" for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait!
Received and read "The War Within" last week but find it hard to characterize this one. While BD was the central figure in "The Long Road Home" I think this one has a cast offigures with equally important stories to tell.BD continues his journey but one gets a much deeper understanding of his pain and struggles as well as those of his family.
5-0 out of 5 stars A service to our country's fighting men and women
These are some most heart-rending yet funny cartoons I have ever read. For a man who has never "been there" Trudeau does an outstanding job of showing the long road that a miltary man has to walk to "recover" from war. B.D. is wounded both on the outside and the inside and as Trudeau shows in a daily comic strip, sometimes it's the hidden wounds that are the worst. If any comic strip is worthy of a Pulitzer, it is the current run of Doonesbury with the ongoing journey of B.D. If you have any empathy for the American fighting man/woman these strips will bring tears to your eyes. They are Art with a capital A. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and MONEY!
Based on the reviews of this book I decided to buy it! To my absolute shock, I dont understand who wrote these great reviews??? They were probably written by the publisher or author of this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Guide
I was not impressed when I received this book, with the quality of the paper or the overall presentation.I thought some of the photography left much to be desired quality-wise.However, it is quite a comprehensive book and I leaned on it considerably in my studies of furniture and design. So don't let me put you off.I just think that, with all the research and hard work involved, and considering the price, a better quality might have been forthcoming.

This new book covers the spectrum from gorgeous coffee table art book to instruction on how to grow as an artist and a person.Nancy has struggled through the learning curve in a systematic and logical way, and shown others by example how to develop their personal talents and skills as fabric artists.Of course, the quilts are well beyond wonderful and the glimpes into her private life are inspiring.I wonder what comes next from Nancy Crow! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning and beautiful
This book is absolutely beautiful. When I ordered it I had no idea what exactly I would be getting when it arrived; I'm pleased to say though that it was worth every penny. The book in itself is all very glossy and high quality paper, and even the text pages are decorative. I found this book to be over all very visually appealing as well as very interesting and informative as it peers into the history of the art as well as Dita's life and opinions. It's really a bit half and half, written like a documentary but also filled with very intimate and warm stories of this fantastic woman`s life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lavish, Beautiful and Witty Like Dita
This book cannot disappoint: lots of stunning photos with tips and anecdotes about stripping, seduction, corsetry, fetish dressing, hair and makeup, and show business. This woman is fascinating. If you're an admirer you'd be nuts not buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fall in love....
Hints, history, and humor make Dita's book a very charming read. She also shares a bit of her life story, making for an all the more interesting experience. The photos are gorgeous; true art. I highly recommend this book for all fans of burlesque, fetish, and/or Dita Von Teese. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not as Expected, very disappointed!
Sadly I purchased this volume based upon other reader reviews. Although I have given it 3 stars- as the book production itself was very nice- oversize square small coffee table book, printed on high quality thick stock, with well printed art work- makes this volume attractive on the outside. The contents and sketchbook is rather a let down. 60% of the sketches are very crude and unattractive (even considering them just sketches from a sketchbook) and the remaining art being just okay, maybe there is 10-12 eye opening pieces. If your looking for inspiration or eye candy this is not your book

1-0 out of 5 stars Ever feel like you've been swindled?
I'm not an artist, but I do have a few tattoos. Just over 100 hours of custom work all done at the Smilin' Buddha in Calgary, Alberta. I've even managed to get 3 pictures of my work (one full page) in Paul Jefferies' vanity press book celebrating his 25 years in the industry.
1-0 out of 5 stars Crappy Bar napkin sketches
The following is an opinion for which we are all entitled: Although this book does tell you something about each artist and shows one sketch from each artist, it is more like a "Collection of bar napkin sketches". Most are of poor quality as if the artist could care less when he/she had drawn them and a very few are of some quality. As an award winning artist of over 35 years experience, I felt it was a complete waste of money as far as being helpful to further my talents or to "just plain enjoy". I would never show such "doodles" in a book to represent what I can do. For something to glance through to kill time, I would say fine, go nuts. Overall....I AM NOT IMPRESSED! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable. Gripping. Superb story and artwork.
Let me give you the bottom line first: buy this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars What if?
The name Neil Gaiman on a comic book sets expectations high.Although largely out of the business nowadays, instead concentrating on his novels, he is still considered one of the best comic writers in the history of the medium, and his reputation is well-deserved.Although it is not always genius, he rarely fails to deliver something great.
5-0 out of 5 stars An inventive reimagining by one of the best (4.5 stars)
Neil Gaiman, renowned for his classic series The Sandman, moves to Marvel to create one of the most interesting tales the company has had in ages. The premise of Marvel 1602 is as deceptively simple as the title suggests: the iconic characters of the Marvel universe are placed into Elizabethan England. The story involves the usual crusading associated with Marvel characters but halfway through the book the problems take on a much grander scale and the reason for the series to exist finally becomes apparent.Gaiman's reimagining of characters and Kubert's excellent art provide heroes that are decidedly familiar and yet distinctly different, a great asset when trying to mask the identities of certain heroes until given turning points in the book. The characters are all fleshed out perfectly and act exactly as they should within the different context and the references to their powers and origin stories within the framework of this book are done masterfully. The ending is also highly rewarding and ties in the events of 1602 to the rest of the Marvel universe without destroying the continuity or any of the resonance of the original story arcs.Marvel 1602 is a perfect vehicle for Neil Gaiman to jump back into the comics world and Marvel will definitely benefit from his presence. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Game Development praise
Jeannie Novak's book Game Development Essentials is an excellent text covering the scope of today's gaming environment. Everything from story development, marketing, character development and audience demographics is covered in this text. She uses highly appropriate first person narratives from industry professionals and has excellent study guide questions at the conclusion of each chapter. The CD included also has great game demos and trials as well as excellent links to web sites that add enrichment to the reading. I look forward to her other upcoming titles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not BAD!
I've been making games for 19 years and I couldn't disagree more with Mark Baldwin's criticisms of this book. Jeannie Novak has written a fresh, all-encompassing book on the subject of game development. The industry is rapidly evolving and this is one of the few texts to keep up with current thinking and present it in a manner that is easy to digest.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the industry
This book is a great introduction to the game industry in general. It doesn't delve deeply, but does a flyover of what is becoming an increasing complex medium. It hits the points someone seeking to enter the industry needs to know - everything from features of the companies creating games to current styles of development.

4-0 out of 5 stars The History of Wally
In the introduction Scott Adams talks about his time at Pacific Bell and the management decisions that resulted in the real-life Wally, an employee that worked hard to be in the bottom 10% so that he could be laid off with a substantial severance package. From there we move to the strips which cover most of the range of the Dilbert Years right from the early, unpolished days of Wally.Reading the collection we can see hoe the coffee mug carrying character has developed over the years.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful collection
Fans of the cartoon strip Dilbert have another wonderful collection packed with black and white and color cartoons alike. This is the author's 26th Dilbert book, but it doesn't lesson the impact of describing office politics, ironies, and inconsistencies. Cubicle cartoons are hilarious and continue to remark on work life with its favorite characters joined by a few new faces.
5-0 out of 5 stars More Great Dilbert
What makes it funny is that everyone knows a Wally where they work? It is funny because there is so much truth in it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Herriman's line
There are precious few draughtsmen that can put line to paper in all of low/high art than he. he is a master. Take a look at "Archie and Mahitabel"; authored by the great Don Marquise. It simply does't get any better than his exquisite line

2-0 out of 5 stars FINE ART? YOU !!! DECIDE
The mere act of arguing that comic art qualifies as "fine art" somehow legitimizes such nonproductive and ultimately meaningless distinctions. Yet this catalogue's obvious purpose is to somehow elevate, by force of such argument, the reputations of comic strip and comic book artists. As the early twentieth century cultural critic, Gilbert Seldes, stated in his review of George Herriman's Krazy Kat:
5-0 out of 5 stars THE COMICS AS "ART" ... IT'S ABOUT TIME THEY'RE ACCLAIMED!
I grew up with "Sunday funnies," as we called them way back then.It was a form of pleasure for the whole family to pass the comics back and forth, with Dad getting first reading, of course. At times I grow nostalgic for the "good old days," but I noticed it more when my kids were growing up. After church, when I sat down to read the "funnies," they were already out the door--to soccer, football, and other sporting events--either as participants or observers.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is expensive, inaccurate, and underwhelming.
Claire Shaeffer writes informative books about sewing and fabrics for the home sewer.Claire Shaeffer should have either stayed in the sewing industry or gained real experience in the garment industry before she dare charge $71 for a vacuous outsider's perspective of this so-called "apparel industry".The book has a generic text book tome and the corny needle and thread clip art screams "home sewer".There is nothing wrong with home sewing.I've been sewing since I was 10.Making clothes has been my quiet hobby and a source of unending fascination. The truth is: the garment industry doesn't want to deal with home sewers."Fashion" designers and home sewers both share ignorance and arrogance as annoying, unappealing traits.Anyone can doodle on a napkin, but who can construct it from a sketch, fit it right, and sew it up professionally, within your cost structure? Not a "fashion" designer or a home sewer can do that, yet they think that they are greater than the process for they are completely unaware of the process. The goal is to work well with the fashion and garment industries. If you are looking for this kind of information in this book, you won't find it.5-0 out of 5 stars THANKYOUCLAIRESHAEFFER!!!
This is the type of book that should be used in schools for Merchandising OR Fashion Design. I cannot get over it's usefullness. Everything I wanted (and needed) to hear about about clothing manufacture is in this book! Fairchild Pubs could never publish such a USEFUL and INTELLIGENTLY WRITTEN book. Those bastards always make textbooks difficult to understand and fill them with meaningless JABBERWOCKY!! Half the time, they don't even have a decent glossary or INDEX (if there is one at all) whereas Claire it seems, has given us the full tour. Peripheral data you could care less about is not here!! Nothing to waste your time, only a step-by-step layout of what happens when a person or people manufacture clothing for retail purposes. From the design concepts (who and how they're created) to what type of people you would need (including full job descriptions) to what the considerations are for contracting, shipping etc.. There are also tons of other little things including pictures that are laid out in a very intelligible way. The beauty of her writing is that the data is always concious that you may not be a huge entreprenuer, and applies methods for the little guy as well. Just an amazing book. I almost don't want anyone else to know about it... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Classroom Library Addition
I bought this book for my 6th grade classroom and ended up reading it myself. It's a favorite with the students though there is a bit of nudity that I had to censor with a black marker.

5-0 out of 5 stars superb
Larry Gonick's book on statistics inspired me. I still don't understand probability but I was amused. His history text shows again that he is smarter then I am but I understoond the text and learned about the time it took to get here from the beginning of time and the maze of attorcities that leads from one powerful kingdom to another. Cartoons help make powerful messages more tolerable. I may buy all of his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Informative Than A Semester In World Civ 101
The first and best volume in Mr. Gonick's history series (just when IS the fourth book coming out???) truly does present more practical information about the history of our planet and the rise of the human species, than any history class I was ever in. And whatsmore, the author has made it fun to learn all this. I understand this book was edited by the late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and what a gem she found to give us! Not only would I enthusiastically recommend this and all works in Larry Gonick's series to historian or casual reader alike, I would go so far as to say these are all masterpieces of erudition and intelligent presentation. ...
