5-0 out of 5 stars Figure drawing books don't get any better than this one.
"Drawing from Life" is a treasure an artist, teacher, and drawing lover finds once in awhile. It is very logically layed out. I enjoyed variety of illustrations, the learning exercises, and glossary. Alas... some negatives: the price, the quality and detail of the reproductions, especially the anatomy ones. The book needs to be bigger in size and make use of detail enlargements to show the beauty of the drawings ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 50's Medical Terms meet the Modern Artist
This book was purchased as required for class. The verbage in the textbook is reminiscent of the types of medical textbooks originating from the 50's.However, once you get past that, the diagrams and sketches are very in depth and descriptive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book has everything and more as far as anatomy for artists goes. The book is complete with excellent illustrations from real pictures to life like illustrations that capture the essence and meaning in the human form as conceptualized by the artist. A definite must have for any artist intrested in the human form.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplicity of form
Peck manages to breakdown scientific understanding of the human form into simple graphic shapes. Up there with Andrew Loomis's work. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Reference
This title provides some excellent geometric information on golden rectangles, other relevant geometry construction and some valid description of how these theories have been applied in history. The fundamental geometry is interesting and sound.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for all design disciplines
A very good book about proportion, grid and structure, which is useful for basically all design majors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Concise Overview of the Geometry's Role in Design Beauty
Kimberly Elam presents a simple yet comprehensive overview of the role of geometry in the beauty of design and nature. Elam first explores the prevalence of the Golden Section in nature, art, and architecture, and supports the storied beauty of its proportions with an overview of the cognitive proportion preference studies of both Gustav Fechner and Lalo. Red-highlighted illustrations illuminate Elam's clear explanations of how to construct Golden Section (or Fibonacci Series) rectangles, ellipses, and triangles.

5-0 out of 5 stars A look into the world of modern fashion design
This book is absolutely fabulous, there's no other way to say it. Whether you're looking for a gift for someone who simply loves fashion, or are someone who loves fabric and the art of fabric manipulation (which is generaly called clothing), this tome is an excellent resource for information on up-and-coming fashion and designers. As a textiles & apparel major I find this book to be a great source of inspiration, but the layout, the wealth of large beautiful photos, and the artistic design of the book itself would make it a great coffee table book. The book is also a great bargain on Amazon, I have seen it for sale in several stores for upwards of $90. If I could give it more than five stars I would! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Though he is chiefly viewed as a monumental pop-art icon, Andy Warhol was truly a man of many talents. But his component parts don't necessarily match up. He made paintings, prints, sculptures, installations, performances; he produced one of the greatest rock bands of all time, the Velvet Underground; he directed films and wrote a novel as well as a philosophical text. But over and above this massive pile of work is a man who was unpredictable, enigmatic, and impenetrable: ultimately, he would have others think, almost inhuman.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Imagery + Surrealism = Pop Realism
After reading this book, I reckon that Andy Warhol was a man of unpredictable genius. Imbedded in his images is the poetic appeal and the simultaneous pop and avante-garde timelessness of his art. He made theserious and the comic blend well. He balanced the beau monde and theclassless. His colour choices evoked and exposed the hidden images withinhis works, and they simply slither in mind once you stare at them. Unlikesome new generation artists or wannabees who only splash their canvasseswith colours, sometimes of uncompromising combinations, every artwork ofWarhol is alive, moving and his concept comprehensive. Here is a pop artistwho is wildly prolific! As a freelance writer and editor doing articles ondesign and who works within the pop culture, I'd say his works are morethan simply decoratives. They speak with you and are nothing less thanenthralling. I feel terrific owning a copy! This is a treasureable read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I found this to be a really good book.It covers everything you need to know about typography. From the basics and generalized topics, to the nitty gritty. So if you are looking to have a better undertanding of typography, I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers past history, letter architecture and future computer typesetting
I am only half way through this book (so much in it I have to take it a few pages at a time). The history of type is covered (and should be read to learn vocabulary...but has a great glossary if you just want to learn terms in other sections as you go along...21 pages of glossary.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good
Although I'm not an expert and therefore cannot comment on whether this really is a complete manual, I can say that the book is very good. It's full of helpful examples (nicely placed in the margins) that help the reader develop good typographical intuitions. It is extremely accessible, even for a non-specialist, and from all that I can tell, it is quite comprehensive. ... Read more

Yes, back in the late 60's or early 70's there were both audio and a movie version of this title.I use to own the LP album and frequently watched the short movie version that played on college campuses more than 35 years ago.Hopefully, the LP and movie will eventually be transferred to CD and DVD?Better yet: podcast?clyde

2-0 out of 5 stars don'twaste your money!!
While I very much enjoyed Miss Wearstler's first book, I found Domicilium Decoratus to be borderline obnoxious. Rather than show great decorating, the book focused mainly on close up shots of objects in her house that took up the whole page.In addition, I feel that as the viewer of the book I do not need to see fifteen entirepages of Miss Wearstler dressed in ball gowns pretending to be domestic.

5-0 out of 5 stars delicious eye candy
I loved modern glamour.
5-0 out of 5 stars amazing design sensibility
This signed limited edition in a specially bound case is superbly done.Ms. Wearstler has the uncanny and clearly innate ability to take any object you give her and make it look absolutely fabulous. When I saw her son's carrera marble bathtub, my first thought was, "how do I get her to adopt me?" ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Sad leftovers from the dark ages...
This book is at first appearance, visually interesting and consuming. But upon closer look (as in opening it) it's not worth the time, money or breath sadly. The concepts and ideas within this book can be inspiring to thoses who have the time and energy, but overall this book is just a display of bad, kitsch design. My advice? Don't bother.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not overly sophisticated
I bought this along with the Color Index, and I must admit I'm not overly impressed with the ideas in this text. 5-0 out of 5 stars i use a lot
for those who aren't experienced in the in's and out's of page layout and design, this book is a lifesaver. it really gets your creative juices flowing by simply giving you a full range of possible ideas for how you can change up your design. i found it much more useful than the idea book, which didn't really help me with the visual expression part. if you have a concept and you simply want to consider all the possibilities for how you can express it on a page, i recommend getting this book! ... This book recalls the days of the sixties, when heroes were heroes, villains were villains, and reasoning and deduction were more useful in defeating evil than fists, guns, and gore. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
For those of us who don't want to have to find out when the local art school has models coming in, or don't want to look at tons of porn trying to find something for reference, this book and its predecessors are perfect.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Great idea but poor execution. The photos are much too small to do any serious work with. The photos on disk are grainy and get even worse when you try to enlarge them.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic!
Artists that seek to master the human figure very quickly come to the realization that unless you're married or are in a committed relationship (and have a partner patient enough to be your model), you don't have access to a model 24/7. This is the next best thing to having a live model. You purchase this product for the CD - the book is meant more as a reference for the CD images. Virtual Pose allows you to view photos of a live model from every angle and zoom in. There are dozens of poses from both female and male models, each of which can be rotated 360 degrees. Highly recommend. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book, but could be better
This is a pretty good book.It shows a variety of portfolios and explains some of the ideas that went into them. It's almost more of a showcase though than a learning tool.I don't feel that the author teaches much. She shows the portfolio then describes a little about what makes it work, and that is all.I would prefer it if she also showed some bad portfolio designs and show why they do not work.

A very good book on a fairly obscure but very important subject.Being able to effectively communicate numerical/statistical information in a graphical way is far more art and aethetics, than science.Anyone who uses charts and graphs to convey important information should get this book.In other works by Tufte, he shows how proper use of explaining critical numerical information could have stopped the Space Shuttle from launching on a cold morning which eventually led to it exploding shortly after tackoff in 1987 - due to an o-ring failing to seal properly.A fascinating read that reveals how important graphs are to making sense of numerical data.

4-0 out of 5 stars How not to lie with graphics
This book is not as incisive as Tufte's classic "The Visual Display of Qantitiative Information".It does, however, discuss in cogent detail how to design a graphical display so that it will clarify ideas and not mislead the viewer. We are subject daily to a blizzard of deliberate dis-information by such means.Tufte's plea for clarity and honesty seems almost quaint by today's standards.Thank you, sir.
