5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great pictures
Nearly every photograph in this book evoked a memory, whether good or bad. Some were disturbing, as they were meant to be, but many were uplifting. And it was neat to see how the cover art had changed over the years, and how Life's priorities have shifted. ... Read more

As a graduating film student who is working on a thesis film, I have come to rely solely on this manual. It has absolutely every bit of information that any aspiring filmmaker could need.I've come to call it my "Bible" of filmmaking.Check it out!You won't regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hey, it's the "Cinematographer's Bible", you can't do without
Anybody who plans on working with REAL film should own this, learn it, know portions of it backwards and forwards and use it to their advantage.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Cinematographer's Bible
Also known as "The Cinematographers Bible", this thick hand-sized pocket book is an absolute must for anybody who owns or uses a 16mm, Super 16mm, 35mm, Super 35mm or 70mm motion picture camera (movie cameras). IT WILL NOT TEACH YOU CINEMATOGRAPHY! It is a technical manual to be used when shooting on film and has since become the industry standard book that most amateur and professional cinematographers own and use. Motion pictures cameras are also built around the specifications laid down in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite photography book, bar none
Of all the books on photography that I own, this one is my favorite. Like me, the author is from the midwest so almost all of his photographs are of things out here in the midwest (which, of course, I'm able to identify with more). As such, this book allows me to be able to see the sometimes featureless midwest landscape in a whole new way. Even if you don't live in the midwest, there's still lots of valuable techniques in here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Improved Vision
As a square corners and center of the frame type, thanks to Bryan Peterson, I am learning to approach a potential image with more thought as to a more creative and more interesting presentation for the viewer. His sample photos that support his teachings give me a chance to practice his style while I seek to find mine.
4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable reading...
and does help to change the way we see.The excercises suggested are awesome to do. The photographs offered impressive. Best suggestion: Do the excersises. (We do learn by doing).I read and did and my vision was expanded. (Never had I considered taking a photograph for texture!) Of the photography books I have thus far this is one of the best. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly inspiring
I think people have very different expectations for these kinds of books, and this one did not at all meet mine. While Master Lighting Guide is very thorough and really gets into the basics of the different kinds of portrait lighting it totally fails to inspire. The photography in this books is very dull and really reminds me of the faded portraits you see plastered to the windows of sad photo stores and barber shops.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great content, well written
I was very impressed with this book. Mr. Grey has done a fantastic job writing this book. It's obvious that he's very accomplished at his craft and has logged countless hours refining his skills. He also explains each scenerio with enough detail to make his intentions perfectly clear. All of the images in the book are crisp, sharp and well composed. Each sample includes a two dimensional diagram of the lighting configuration. Since there is no third dimension to the diagrams it is sometimes hard to tell if a light was placed high or low in relationship to the model and the other light. Mr. Grey does explain the configuration in the narrative so it's not that hard to figure out the height of a light in the diagram. Great book. I highly recommend it for a portrait primer. Side note - The cover picture is fantastic. It's a great representation of the quality of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I have advanced in my photography skills a great deal from this book. My lighting has become just as artistic as the shots themselves. Alot of the ideas in the book are just fun to play around with to help create your own kinda lighting. A must read for those not to new but would like to make the next leap... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This Dummies is a mess!
Dummies books have been a staple of my computing/software resource library for a long time. This book was very disappointing. If you're looking for an organized presentation of the functions and capabilities of Adobe 7, leave this on the shelf. There are few visual examples in the book and very few tutorials that lead you through a topic in any organized way at all.To get something out of this book, I found myself jumping all over the place, following topic and function chapter references tossed in all too frequently, sifting through meaningless and annoying chatty writing, trying to piece together a tool's functionality on my own.And did I mention the writing style?Distracting, distracting, distracting.I felt like I was sitting in a computer class for octogenarians with ADD. Get to the point!!Leave it on the shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great
This book is easy to use and understand. I was comfortable using the program in a week.

2-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop 7 for Dummies

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the beginer and the experienced DP
This book goes back to first principals and clarifies things that many of us have picked up by experience without really thinking about them.It starts by talking about the difference between diffuse and direct reflection which makes books like "Lighting for Digital Video & Television, Second Edition" and "Matters of Light and Depth" more valuable for the beginner. It also talks about subjects like lighting extreme contrast, glass and specular metal objects which will benefit anyone doing table top shooting as well as outdoors. The section on portraits shows what works and why in a really useful way. They don't promulgate rules but give you the tools to think through what you want yourself. This book is like the sound books by Jay Rose an essential for every level.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have to Understand What You're Doing, Recording Light
If you plan to go beyond mere snapshots with a cheap camera, then you need to understand and know what's in this book. Even if all you have is a point-and-shoot camera, you will take better photographs knowing what's in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars simply the best book on artificial lighting
This is the best book ever written on the subject. It explains the physics of light and types of reflection, which is what the camera records.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Thought I'd Died and Gone to Cartoon Heaven
Like many of my peers, as I grew up, my interest in animation gravitated toward the full animation of the Golden Age: Robert McKimson, Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, et al, for a long while disdaining any form of animated minimalism, even the kind represented in this book. By the age of 7 or 8, we had come to associate Top Cat, Deputy Dawg, The Flintstones, The Jetsons and all the minimal animation that had once been among our favorites with shoddy cheapness. (Even as a small child, I remember several of us sitting around talking about cartoons, and laughing to scorn at the way the same background tree kept passing every couple of seconds in Hanna-Barbera chase scenes. We wondered, did they think we weren't catching that?!) 'Limited animation', those dread words, became poision for all us growing young animation fans.
5-0 out of 5 stars For moderns only!!
Because the style was bastardized by budget-minded network television to grind out cheesy Saturday-morning fare, modern animation has severely negative connotations for a great swath of the general public. Indeed, much of the production work beginning in the 1960s was farmed out to sweatshops in Mexico and Korea where the animation fell into the hands of lowly paid, barely competent novices. (That practice continues to this day, with such eyesores as The Simpsons.) However, in the "complacent" 1950s, when the style was developed, it was highly original and sophisticated and brought into movie theaters and television ads by Disney expatriates and left-leaning malcontents looking for a new edge. This highly anticipated book by Amid Amidi is a visual feast and an incredibly well-researched documentation of "cartoon modern" and comes with the highest recommendation. For companion videos, I also recommend some titles from Something Weird Video, notably Beer Commercials From The Golden Age Of Television, which features some priceless Mister Magoos and other "off beat" ad shorts. Also from SWV, check out their series of Hey Folks!-It's Intermission Time for other great modernistic stuff. But at Amazon's discounted price, put this wonderful book in your hands first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every bit as good as expected...plus!
The author, through his blog and elsewhere, has made a passion of the brilliant, colorful, and grandly stylized types of cartooning and animation that came to prominence largely in the 1950's. This book--intelligently written and organized, and magnificently illustrated--strikes me as having been a genuine labor of love. It's just about perfect.

Was anyone ever described to you as "nice"?Scary isn't it.I am an ardent fan of Deadwood and a fan of David Milch. This book is a `nice' coffee-table addition that succeeds as a way of fondly recollecting the characters and singular moments of Deadwood.I was hoping for an extension and an amplification of Deadwood -more great Black Hill's tales from Milch's magic pen.In that respect, the book is disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Manual for using older Hasselblad cameras.
Before Wildi's The Hasselblad Manual came on the scene and the various editions became the bible for Hasselblad users, there was Freytag's The Hasselblad Way. This tome covers the use of and accessories for the Hasselblad SLRs and SWCs of the 50s, 60s and 70s. This book is a good place to start if you are trying to use one of the olders Hasselblad cameras with the older C type lenses and accessories. For one example, this book explains which ends of the dual cable release go to which end on the old style bellows. Now I can reliable get the lens shutter and the camera shutter working in the proper sequence for macro work. There are many little nuggets like this that no longer have a place with the more modern focus of the newer books. So if you have a 500 or 2000 series Hasselblad camera, this book can help you utilize all the potential of those cameras better. ... Read more

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Hungry Planet.I loved seeing the photos of each family representing a country on this great planet. It made me think about how much I pay for food during the week, and what my family eats. It also showed that the countries that ate more vegetables and less processed foods seemed to have less diseases and spent less.I also liked to read how members in thefamilies helped each other out with daily chores. I especially found the essay titled, Baked, Boiled, Roasted and Fried interesting. It was about how humans are the only species on Earth that cooks their food and that humans are not carnivores, but cookivores. I highly recommend it and look forward to reading other books by the this author and photographer team.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another "make-a-buck" issue...
I too was disappointed in this issue of Visionaire like many others. It seems Visionaire has had an "up and down" quality issue as of late. Some issues are as elaborate as can be, others are like this issue, a cheaply bound paperback magazine in a cheap plastic sleeve. 3-0 out of 5 stars Classy-But Not What I Expected!
I was really excited about getting this new book by Mario Testino, one of my favorite photographers, but was truly disappointed when it arrived.Yes, it's a very classy publication, and comes in a unique & different pink slipcover, but not being familiar with Visionaire's previous publications, I expected a paperback book of high quality, however, what I got was a magazine.Yes, it is numbered in a limited edition of 6000 but it's not even signed by the photographer.1-0 out of 5 stars Visionaire has lost its magic
I have been a fan of Visionaire since issue 23 directed by Karl Lagerfeld and at that time the issues were fabulous and worth the price. Well that time has gone and now it is really not worth it anymore. This issue comes in a plastic sleeve and is a simple paper book. There's really nothing special about this item. When i heard that Mario Testino was the force behind this issue i thought it would be like his first issue, no. 22 chic. Well it is quite the opposite! Don't buy this item at bookstores but try to get it for less at auction sites. ... Read more

It's the ability to capture emotion that makes or breaks the wedding photographer - that and etiquette and professional touches in presenting the shot - and these are what DIGITAL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY: CAPTURING BEAUTIFUL MOMENTS emphasizes. Color photo examples throughout compliments more technical directions on lens choices, settings, composition and art. A top pick for aspiring wedding photographer and newcomers alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I enjoy his book and got much more out of it as it focuses on psychology of the subjects and the photographer. You will get much more out of this book than the PPSOP class and it is much cheaper too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner by Bryan Peterson
Many years ago I was a budding photographer with no formal training, never really interested in photographing people. Yet people were always getting in the way of most of my shots. Many years later, I discovered that people can add interest to my images by adding scale, a sense of place, or adding to the image's story. Today I enjoy sports photography and I look for ways to include people when composing. As a serious hobby photographer with no formal training, this book will help me get more creative when photographing people.
5-0 out of 5 stars Facing your fears, one person at a time
BryanPeterson'sbest books are the ones that allow photographers (beginning and professional) to confront their fears in becoming better photographers. This is, hands down, one of his best. A great distillation of his years of experience as a top working photographer, teacher, instructor and writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Book
Criticizing Photographs remains one of the most important books in the field, and Barrett has updated the text with new photos to discuss. His new editions include worthy changes and are not ploys to sell new copies. I have used his books for years in an advanced photography college class. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tad Crawford Does It Again
Tad Crawford has written a whole series of books out of his expertise in the law and creative arts, with a special focus on photography.I'd suggest looking at Tad's other books, too, since this one is more action-focused without extensive explanations of the whys and wherefores of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Business and Legal Forms for Photographers
Appears to cover all the bases, including contracts, legal assistance, and many more forms than I ever imagined I might need. Very informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Resource
I didn't originally buy this book to "read".I bought it for the invaluable resources inside - the wealth of forms that any photographer needs to protect their work and their business. What makes this book so enticing is you don't have to photocopy, or redesign any of the forms since they're all included on a CD that comes with the book. That being said, I should mention that I was quite surprised at the thorough explanation for each form, and the situations where each form might be needed contained in the book.A person could undoubtedly pay hundreds (probably thousands) in legal fees assembling the information in this book on their own. This book is a photographer's "legal-resource-in-a-book".I highly recommend it. ... Pro photographers use a variety of methods of marketing their work, from advertising to word of mouth, with each method tailored to the particular type of work that the photographer wants to do.Freelance photojournalism and fine art photography and portrait sittings all require their own brand of selling.
