5-0 out of 5 stars Ten Stars.....this is the Bible!
If you can only buy one book on composition of Outdoor Painting, this is the one.The original book, published in 1941, has seen several editions and goes in and out of print. Although Amazon often shows that it is out of print, call the publisher directly. They have plenty of brand new copies in the latest editions. The book, itself, is not large, only 6x9 or so. And it mostly consists of WORDS!But it is one of the most succinct books on composition I have ever read. Each paragraph, each sentence is packed with information and advice. There are some simple line drawings which help the viewer and provide the basics for compositional outlines. Also, the newer editions have some very fine color samples of Mr. Paynes work in the back of the book, as well as several addenda by his daughter. If you are an outdoor painter, you could read this book every day for the rest of your life and still find something new to think about or try. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I liked it
It just didn't motivate me like I wanted it to.... so I sold it.But, it does have some good steps to getting that impressionistic look.I suggest trying out the book by Susan Sarback, Capturing Radiant Color in Oils (Paperback)

This discussed painting in a way I needed to hear. It was easy to work with and inspired ideas for me to try. Great book

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Advice on Landscape Painting
I was somewhat surprised with this book as I don't usually care for the X number of steps for a perfect life type books. However, Barbara Nuss has some very good advice for the beginner and intermediate landscape painter, and even for the advanced painter. She actually does list 14 "formulas" or, as I'd classify, compositions, of landscape painting. Each formula is addressed with samples and step-by-step demonstrations. Some of these are addressed in other books (see my review on Edgar Alwin Payne). However, I think the greatest value in Ms. Nuss' advice is how she gives the viewer confidence to change things. If you don't like the actual landscape in front of you, change it!Ha!How simple is that? But most artists are so consumed with the idea of depicting things exactly as they see them, that they forget that they are the creator and can change the landscape to make a stronger composition and a stronger painting. Most outdoor painters will find value in this book.I will add that Ms. Nuss' oil paintings are much stronger than her watercolor paintngs. If you are looking for W/C, then perhaps another book would suit you better.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Landscape Artists!
"Formulas" is such an unfortunate word to put on anything creative. Disregard it. This book is a treasure!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Even Better!
I was surprised to see another book by Gordon MacKenzie. What more could he say that he had not said in his first book? Plenty! In fact, I consider this book to be much more valuable than the first. This book focuses on landscape painting and is divided into three parts: tools and techniques, composing landscapes, and landscape elements. It begins with an expanded paint quality chart comparing more paints by more manufacturers. Sweet! I can pick and choose the best paints with confidence now. But the best part of the book for me was the information on painting the essentials--water, skies, rocks, and trees. I expected this book to be good, but it was great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Landscapes
This was a gift for my very talented spouse. She really enjoyed the book. Said it always enhances her skills to see other artists and their technics.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Watercolorists Essential Notebook: Landscapes
Gordon MacKenzie's new book is a worthy addition to his "The Watercolorists Essential Notebook."If you are looking for a lot of pretty pictures to copy, this is not it.If you want to become more proficient and creative as a watercolorist, this is your treasure!Regardless of where you are on the pathway in using watercolors, this book holds valuable instrucion for your self improvement. It can be a life-long guide as you strive to produce better and better work.DON'T MISS IT! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exceeded expectations
If you are looking for a different perspective on the art of landscape this is the perfect book. The painters in the Group of Seven are all individuals but have a similar feeling for design and grand compositions. This book has beautiful, large reproductions and it lets the paintings do the talking with over 400 finely reproduced color images. A little expensive but if you love powerfully composed, colorful landscapes, this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Colorful Testament To Canada's Group of Seven & Tom Thomson
Art historian, cultural administrator, and managing director of Sotheby's Canada, David P. Silcox, has produced a colorful testament to Canada's Group of Seven and Tom Thomson, artists who had broken with tradition and established a new way of painting Canada.
5-0 out of 5 stars Canada Remembered
David Silcox's beautiful blending of Canada's best-loved artists captures the magnificent richness of the northern landscape. I particularly like the way the paintings have been grouped thematically into portraits: wilderness, rural life, and the Canadian Arctic to name a few. The author'swritten commentary is clear and concise about what the Group of Artists was trying to accomplish without overpowering the visual impact of the work. It is a book that is incredibly satisfying to the eye. One you'll not set aside easily. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars unbeatable and unique book on the Museum
I am not a scientist nor museum professional, simply a museumgoer. This book is a clear and attractive presentation about the dioramas that have helped define this wonderful museum for decades.Anyone who has ever visited the American Museum of Natural History will be captivated by the behind-the-scenes perspective presented. Understanding this background adds depth to our appreciation of the habitats.Quinn must have dug up old diaries, records and I wonder if he even listened in on some conversations as well because he offers little known factoids which are fascinating to read about and which enhance our experience as a museumgoer.I highly recommend this volume to anyone who has visited the museum. For those who have not visited, the book provides a wonderful view of what you've been missing!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Gem!
I found this treasure at my local bookstore (could have got it cheaper here!), looked it over, walked away, came back and looked again, walked away again, but couldn't find anything else I wanted as badly. It is an elegant masterpiece. I happen to thrill at anything remotely connected to taxidermy, but this book will also interest those who like nature, museums, or art.
5-0 out of 5 stars NATURAL WONDERS AND HOW THEY WERE MADE
This is a marvelous and beautiful book.It has great color photos of recreated natural settings--the dioramas that bring nature to life in the museum--and the text is a pleasure to read. The descriptions and additional photos not only tell about the scenes but provide innumerable details and stories about how they were made, and the very human and wonderful museum exhibition people who, with skill and ingenuity, created them--the world behind the scenes. Bravo! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
I am a big Jerry Yarnell fan.He is an excellent teacher and it really shows in his instructional books.I had the good fortune to attend one of his workshops, and really learned a lot.I expect to be able to continue to learn from these books.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginner up to advanced students
This is a great book with simple steps to follow.I'm an oil painter "trying" out acrylic painting. This was my very first acrylic book.I was not disappointed (except I paid (more) at the bookstore for mine)...This is a good book for any beginner to begin with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great starter book. Step by Step
Yarnell makes it easy. He covers everything including materials and terminology. The step by step leasons are easy to follow and provide a wealth of information from which you can build your own skills and learn the basics to experiment on your own. I would also suggest Yarnell's videos, one in particular covering techniques so that you can actually see what is going on. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Where's the water??
The title of this review says it all. As for 'all mediums' mostly are watercolor. So, if you are into watercolor and not wanting to learn how to paint water, which what water is in there is terrible, then by all means purchase it. Personally, I sent it back as no help to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Robinson is the go-to person for painting water
E. John Robinson is a well known California Seascape artist that works with both oils and watercolor. In his "Painting All Aspects of Water," Robinson shares his observations and techniques gained over his many years of study and painting water.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not as good as the last 2 books!
If you are looking for the same level of instruction as in the prior E. John books, you won't find it.The pictures are beautiful but no major step by step process--more a global overview.I pre-ordered this book months ago, as I think E. John is a phenominal painter and seems so spiritually attuned and connected with the ocean.I was a little disappointed with this edition, but being an admirer of E. John Robinson's, I would have purchased it anyway. ... Read more

On my feedback I had entered the feedback for the wrong book, my apologies, please. This book does have a lot of great information and gives details using great techniques.

4-0 out of 5 stars Painting better landscapes
Well written text, for advanced artist as well as the beginner. Kessler explains her topics very well. She uses a lot of earth tones in most of her paintings, but any artist can adjust the color range to suit their taste.

5-0 out of 5 stars ESPECIAL PARA ARTISTAS AVANZADOS - SPECIAL FOR ADVANCED ARTISTS

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Service
It was a surprise when the book was delivered in a couple days, I had expected a week. It is in superb condition. Impressive seller and delivery.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice loose painting
This is a nice book for soft landscapes. However, I don't use it nearly as much as I thought I would.Check out the authors style first, and if you really like it...then the book is for you.I use some techniques, but the subject matter is a little soft for me.I didn't stay interested enought to use the lessons, but I did read it through and apply concepts to some of my own work.

5-0 out of 5 stars These techniques are nothing short of fantastic!
I love these books by Roycraft. If you love painting landscape or natural subjects, you cannot go wrong reading this book. Roycraft's techniques look simple (a lot of splashing going on) but they are controlled and well thought out. If you love floral painting you should not miss his examples here of a peony and an iris. JUST Breathtaking.I picked up so many ideas from this book. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Academic painting.
Far too academic.Fails to consider the sponteneity this media evokes and the inherent emtionality of each individual.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handell has the best ever pastels
I bought Albert Handell's book because for someone painting in pastels his works have reached a level that ordinary pastel artists might think impossible. They are so rich in texture and color blend and capturing the essance of the painting. From buying the book I did not really get a handle on how he did the paintings- he probably reveals that in his workshops- but the book is a visual delight and worth it just for that- Jason Alster - publisher- Creative Painting For The Young Artist

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Lightweight
I am a beginner to the art of pastel painting/drawing.This book is below the level of a beginner. It is long on talk about color, hues, values, and lots of things that a beginner doesn't really care about. When it comes to ACTUAL TECHNIQUE, HOW TO PUT PASTEL ON PAPER AND MAKE IT LOOK THE WAY YOU WANT IT TO, THIS BOOK IS VIRTUALLY SILENT!I have recently checked a book out of my university library that is the best book I have seen yet (the author's name escapes me now).It has about 10 demonstration paintings where the author goes through the various steps of creating a pastel painting. In contrast, Painting the Landscape had 1 or 2 such demonstrations and only about a page of nitty gritty on technique (actually applying pastel to paper).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Watercolor Painting for the Beginning Artist
By profession I am a scientist, but I have always had an interest in the visual arts.Only in the last few years have I had much time to devote to such endeavors and even then it has been rather catch as catch can.My main interest in art is in the capture of natural images (I took scientific illustration in college), but I appreciate the fact that art and stark realism may express somewhat different truths about the subject. As a rank amateur in watercolor art I also appreciate deeply such roadmap-like guide books as Ferdinand Petrie's "The Big Book of Painting Nature in Watercolor."At first the title turned me off, but in perusing a copy (and later acquiring it) I found it to be an excellent guide to capturing the essence of a natural scene in one of the most difficult of all media- watercolor (only pen and ink may be more demanding from my experience!)
5-0 out of 5 stars Good variety and information for various angles
This book is one to read through to learn -- not just do the practice paintings. Being a newbie to watercolor, this book has really helped me to view nature through a different set of eyes. He helps you see the "what do I want this picture to focus on" instead of microdetailing every possible detail in view. I am now finding myself looking at nature figuring out the details and what would I want to paint as the focus. I think this book goes very well with Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Watercolor by Marian Appellof -- good pair with minimal redundancy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Numerous step-by-step watercolor techniques
As a beginning artist, I tend to accumulate technique books."The Big Book of Painting Nature in Watercolor" has been one of my most useful watercolor books. It is, in fact, the book that my watercolor instructor uses for reference material for her students.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars All things to all people
The best things about this book are the cover and frontis images. It covers everything about the rules of making art, but doesn't really inspire. Nothing in the textsings "Nature" to me, instead I felt that it had all been said before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, insightful, easy to follow, informative
There is no doubt about it. This book is definetely comprehensive. It is also extremely well-organized and quite readible. I like the fact that the book can be used equally by a complete beginner or by an advanced painter. There is material to help a novice get started, yet the author (McDaniel)provides insightful guidance that will even help the experts.Read more
