5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely valuable tool
"Land Development Calculations" provides an excellent and innovative strategy for working towards sustainable land use and development. The models for varying land development strategies can assist local government land use decision makers and planners as well as developers determine the carrying capacity of land within realistic thresholds. The accompanying spreadsheets for the development scenarios on the CD-ROM are extremely user friendly and do not place an undue burden on the user by requiring what may be hard to find or to collect data. All of the data required just is typical of what is necessary to make appropriate land development decisions. As a local government planner, I am working towards incorporating the information received from the models in to the zoning and development code as part of the approval process by using it to further assess suitability of the property for the purposes proposed (a zoning consideration required in accordance with the State of Georgia Zoning Procedures Act).I strongly encourage other land planners and developers to read "Land Development Calculations," because of its highly practical and very timely material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Author Delivers Valuable Techniques and Tools
This is a terrificaly valuable technical reference for practitioners who need an efficient method of performing land development calulations. The book and its companion set of spreadsheets enable users to answer two key questions: 1) how much can be built on a given piece of land; or 2) how much land is needed to accommodate a given use? The material is clearly written and well illustrated, especially a series of worksheets leading through the method. Another strength is its comprehensiveness and detail, including all major land-use and micro site conditions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Doesn't give a detailed analysis of anything, but is a great tool for people wanting a basic understanding of green building, energy efficient techniques, etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but....
This book no doubt makes a lovely addition to my coffee table. I feel so inspired and now.. how do I do it?? I was looking for more practical advice that addressed all my reasons for wanting to remodel green - protecting my family's health and our planet's natural resources and my financial savings. If the intention was to create a stunning, inspiring book - great job. If it was to really explain what green is and exactly how to do it, I think I'd look to books like "Green Remodeling" by Johnston and Master or read Environmental Building News....

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book
The book is wel written and very beautifully photographed. The history is interesting, but would have liked to see more current info.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting overview of prefab homes, past, present and future
In PREFAB, author Allison Arieff presents an interesting overview of "prefabricated" buildings, past, present, and future.Yet, I would not recommend this book to average modular home consumers, as many of the projects described in PREFAB are highly customized, somewhat eccentric, and generally impractical for those looking to save time and money by utilizing prefab construction as opposed to regular, stick-built construction. Some of the buildings aren't even single-family dwellings, but apartment buildings.Nonetheless, PREFAB is a helpful resource for those who'd like to learn more about the history of prefabricated buildings, as well as the current state of affairs, and in which unusual directions the industry will be headed in the future.
3-0 out of 5 stars so-so
ok, if you're looking for more of a coffee table book than a serious research source.arieff does provide a brief history of some selected prefabricated ventures, but the other 3/4 of the book is of more modern attempts, all of which are not described or displayed as thoroughly as i had hoped.most of the designs are also of doubtful marketability, and the pompous attitudes of some of the designers is off-putting.some pretty pictures, however. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Rat's Tail at his best!
I LOVED this book!I think my designs are so much better now that I know when to open and close the windows at the right time!I was always so confused before.I can also make sure that I get good air flow by drawing those great ribbon arrows. This book is perfect for anyone who has never looked at the sky or felt the wind before or chooses to ignore their own senses!I think Brown could of done this without DeKay though.RULES-O-THUMB LUV!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sun, Wind and Light, Architectural Design Strategies
This is one of the most important books of the decade.Anyone who builds or designs buildings, needs to own and read this book. I am amazed at the thoroughness of information it presents about design, all there, in one book, it is worth five times what they ask.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed handbook for architects
This book is on architecture and energy conservation. From the cover - This book is for designers who want to consider the form-generation potential of sun, wind, and light in the earliest stages of the design process. The book stresses the energy implications of using the sun, wind, and light. However, it is organized by the architectural elements designers manipulate - streets, open spaces and buildings, rooms and courtyards, and walls, roofs, floors, and windows. The book is divided into three sections : Design Strategies, Analysis Techniques, and Strategies for Supplementing Passive Systems. Extensively referenced and indexed. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book but boring
Has lots of tables and charts, and is adequately explained. The author also writes study guides for standardized architecture tests, and that pretty much sums up the style: no opinions, just facts. Very thorough though. Personally I don't need a whole chapter on locks, but I suppose there are those who do. Presentation and graphics are a bit low-rent for an architecture book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough knowledge for Interior construction and details
This book should be on the shelves of every interior designer-it's so thorough that it's a little cumbersome at first. It should be used as a reference book, it gives chapter-by-chapter explanations on the specifics for the construction and application of windows, casegoods, partitions, etc.If there is ever any doubt in a designers mind as to how exactly something is constructed or works when it comes to the specifics of interior design, this book's for you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars DXF
The details are good, but the conversion from the Author's Mac-Based PowerCADD to AutoCAD are not that great. It assigns polylines to most every object with a global thickness.I found the DXF easier to work with. The user will have to explode the detail into the more primative objects in order to customize the detail. Finally, the software allows you to review the detail before pulling it up in your CAD software, however, it doesn't work UNLESS you move the details to the root drive. For example: I installed under the default directory C:\Program Files\Architectural Details.I matched the path in the detail program to where they were located on my drive and it did not work. The only way I could get it to work was by moving the DETAILS folder to the root drive- C:\Details.Once I did this and changed the path, it called up the details in the CADD program fine. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Materials Control Design
Architecture is an interesting mix of enginnering and art. All too often one of these is emphasized too much at the expense of the other. If too much art is emphasized, it is easy to design structures that cannot be built with the materials being specified.
5-0 out of 5 stars Design magicians reveal their material tricks
If you've seen beautiful design and wanted to know how it was actually made, this is the book to show you. The case studies are the best of recent work and each has clear concepts, many color shots and ALSO clear construction drawings and details which are impossible to find. Some books only tease with images but not explanations, and technical manuals miss the beauty of design altogether. This book brings the two together.I don't know why this approach was not taken before, but it's what I've been looking for. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Architectural Research Methods
This is a good overall text for anyone working in or towards a graduate degree in architecture or landscape architecture.

3-0 out of 5 stars Uphill Reading
As a graduate student taking my first official course in research methods, I was disappointed. The language and structure of this book could have been made a lot easier to follow. I would have appreciated, for example, more frequent subheadings and listing of points.Because of the lack of, the book is difficult to skim or pick and choose sections to read; expect to read thoroughly. Some of the examples in the book were questionable -especially the chapter on experimental and quasi-experimental research. The frequent diagrams were also lacking in clarity.I think that the text could have been half as long and still conveyed the same amount of information.Redundancy aside, I did (with much caffeinated effort) gain a broad understanding of several research strategies and tactics. The book is not a comprehensive guidebook for conducting research based on particular research methods; it is merely a broad introduction or clarification of various strategies. However, it frequently suggests comprehensive texts for further reading if you are so inclined.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cohesive and comprehensive
I found this book to be excellent:comprehensive and approachable, eclectic and interdisciplinary. It should save any student, researcher or instructor much time and can serve as a text book and/or a comprehensive reference manual. It also adds to the body of knowledge by freshly demonstrating the application ofthe research methods of many other disciplines in the specific context of architecture (including many cases and examples), all within a nice, logical, unifying philosophical framework. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An impressive account of log cabins...
This book is a wonderful representation of log cabins and anyone who is interested in log cabins, like me.It is impressive the details and descriptions of the log cabin, the history, and principles of building a log cabin and not to mention the stunning photos.I especially enjoyed the comparisons of the European and American log cabins; it certainly brings out the scope of what I thought was a simple building method.I had no idea, all the nuances that constitute a log cabin...Highly recommended. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Unique information
I purchased this book for use with my Thesis research, and have been quite pleased with it. The book brings up ideas about human perception of spaces as influenced by thermal conditions. It goes into historical examples very nicely, but it is a little weak on more contemporary works. That being said, it is quite easy to apply the proposals to any work of architecture. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in 1) architecture or 2) human perception. For someone that is interested in the human perception of architecture, it's a must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars And besides, its (cheap)
This book does not provide much in the way of technical information on the art architecture, and that is perhaps its greatest strength.Rather, Heschong offers a more poetic, archetypal appreciation of buildings and environment, focusing, as the title suggests, on the role warmth plays in creating an enjoyable construction that is capable of influencing human bonding and interaction within its boundaries.Heschong's simple, lucid prose captures the subtle effects of the dynamics of warmth in our daily lives.I am not a student of architecture and have done little reading in this area (unfortunately, few books live up to the precedent set by Heschong and seem dull reading in comparison), but this book has had a profound impact on my perceptions and the way I experience my surroundings, opening up a whole new world of appreciation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique approach to architecture. Concise, accessible to all.
Of the many books I've read on architecture, this has been by far the most influential; it inspired by bachelor of architecture thesis.Heschong argues that thermal aesthetics in architecture, although almost universally overlooked, affect building users at least as much as visual aesthetics. She supports her thesis by naming dozens of examples linking thermal qualities to psychology/perception, culture, traditions, language, and, of course, architecture. The book is accessible to everyone and not just architects: it is not at all technical and is very concise.Yet it is thorough, and is sure to change the reader's perception of his or her thermal environments. ... In his preamble the author refers to the fact this book took him more than 10 years to write.Given the level of detail and the comprehensive nature of this book, this is not surprising.
5-0 out of 5 stars Looks like a new classic on Architectural Acoustics
I just received my copy, and have yet to dive into. However it appears up to date (2006) in that it covers modelling and auralization concepts. The scope of the book is expanded compared to Eagan's excellent text. Take a look at the table of contents on line for an idea of the topics.
