5-0 out of 5 stars If Pictures are words
If pictures are words, this is an epic novel in the tradition of Dickens or Tolstoy. Read carefully and bring along the tissues so that -when you reach the final chapters -you won't leave the pages damp, as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Photographer
I waited in anticipation for this book's release. It was worth the wait.Annie Liebovitz, one of the world's most talented photographers, has released a book that will touch even those who have a limited interest in photograpy. From the opening pages to the closing pages, it's very evident that this is not just another Annie Liebovitz release.Instead, it's a special edition from her heart and soul.Whether it's photographs of her family and friends or famous people from throughout the world, she tells a story that you will not easily forget.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, interesting and superb @}->---
Even if you aren't into photography, you can certainly appreciate the quality, professionalism and beauty of Annie's work. She's one of the most trusted photographers around and she's been in the business for so long doing amazing work. This book is delightful to look at.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the price
An excellent book providing all of the basic knowledge anyone could want on the subject of photography. A bit expensive, but the quality of the pictures makes it worth the price of admission.

3-0 out of 5 stars Am I the only one who found this jumbled and confusing?
Sure this book has EVERYTHING you need to know about photography and how to develop things, but these people know NOTHING about layout design.I just don't know where to look, where to read, and what to do next.If I didn't have an instructor, I wouldn't know what to do with my camera. It is very hard to find what you need in this book, much less go through a chapter. For people wanting to learn about photography, may I suggest the much cheaper book by National Geographic? It has much more clearly defined chapters though it does not have as much information overall (for example, no information about how to develop film).

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic guide to film photography
This seminal photographic guidebook, now in its eighth edition, should be basic reading for anyone planning to pursue photography as a career or hobby. Although it deals primarily with film photography, I think you'll find that a thorough grounding in the fundamentals will help you become a better, well-rounded photographer in the digital realm, too. Many of the photographic concepts covered here have been continued into digital photography, whether through digital camera features or by means of "digital darkroom" image editors like Photoshop.Start here, and you'll never regret it. ... Editorial Review

After September 11th, 2001, the Ground Zero site in New York City was classified as a crime scene and only those directly involved in the recovery efforts were allowed inside. The press was also prohibited from the site, but with the help of the Museum of the City of New York and sympathetic city officials, award-winning photographer Joel Meyerowitz managed to obtain unlimited access. By ingenuity and sheer determination, he was the only photographer granted unimpeded right of entry into Ground Zero. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Shocking with a presentation that brings a fresh unseen angle
The images of September 11th are ones that are familiar to anybody in the western world and beyond. The death tolls as well as the political and sociological ramifications of these events on the following years and years to come have also been the subject of much discussion. However the glory of Joel Meyerowitz's photographic collection is that it ignores all the larger political manoeuvering and focuses on the minutia.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Fitting Memorial on the Fifth Anniversary of September 11:
We still struggle with knowing how to think about the events of 9/11/2001 - and with how to depict them in the popular media. The reactions to the films "World Trade Center" and "Flight 93" have been all over the map. For some, it seems too soon to reopen the raw wounds that the tragedies of that day inflicted on our national psyche. For others, remembering the events and trying to make sense of them is part of the healing from those wounds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Then and Now
The photographs in this book are good shots - clear, and larger than I had expected. It is very interesting to see how the historical city of Boston was, and how it has changed over the years, most times for the better, though sometimes for the worse.Perhaps I would get more out of this if I knew more about Boston. Unless you are already familiar with this city, then "Boston Then and Now" gives you the feeling of peeping through the windows of a house that's up for rent, rather than being taken on a guided tour. A map certainly would have been helpful, and how about an entire page of background information rather than a footnote? Just an idea, in case someone decides to revise it someday. Nice book. Worth buying.

"Boston Then And Now" was reviewed by Charles Higgensworth III.I do hope there won't be a number 4 Higgensworth. This man should drop the attitude. Then people may like him almost as much as this book. What a jerk!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good backstop to any trip to Boston's sites
We purchased this book in Boston and found almost all of the sites we saw in town in this book.In this book, the older, up to 150-year old photo of the original structures on the current site, or older pictures than offered a juxtaposition of the surrounding landscape of buildings present in the past and now around selected sites.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for the amateur
I am fairly new to the world of photography, and part of the fun for me is reading everything I can get my hands on to learn as much as I can about my hobby. This book is, by far, one of my favorites and one I would recommend to any do-it-yourself amatuer photographer. It's easy to read, it's not overwhelming (like some "technique" books can be), it's well-organized and, most importantly, it's easy to understand.
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and concise - I actually read the whole book
Ok. I'll admit it: I buy a *lot* of books that I don't read and sometimes just glance at and use for reference. I actually read this book cover to cover. It's short and it has a lot of good examples that illustrate what the author is writing about.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one to start with!!!
I picked up this book after getting a new digital rebel xti in hopes of breaking out of the full auto mode. Heck I paid a lot of money for those extra features so I should know how to use them, right? Anyways, I am up to page 58 and I have learned so much already! I am out of the full auto mode and I don't plan on returning!! If you are lucky to browse through the book at a bookstore before buying, do so! You will see after reading only a few short pages what the rest of us are talking about here. The author does a great job!! All those buzz words like f-stop, aperture, etc. are explained in simple terms and make so much more sense to me now. Thanks to all the other reviewers for leaving their comments and leading me to this book. You really help out the rest of us!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond art book, beyond photography
It is not really a book, but an art object: accordion folded and neatly ensconced in a box, its heavy cardboard structure makes it a durable thing, one that transcends the notion of a mere "book." It is an object of intrinsic beauty and the mere holding of it in one's hands conveys the good taste, fine quality, and the superb craftmanship that were blended to create PORTRAITS.
4-0 out of 5 stars Many great portraits ...
... but it's not a book. I personally did not care for the strange format, which has a sleeve, a back and a front cover, and a sort of concertina arrangement of the intervening text and pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Portraits' was a beautiful composition of Avedon's work
Not only was I excited about the low price offered by amazon.com for this book, I couldn't believe the wealth of information it withheld. The book itself is innovating, working as an accordian-style setup with text on one side and full-size, beautiful portraits on the other. The written portions spoke of Avedon in his early years, what his inspirations were, and how the affected his work later on. As a young photographer, this was valuable information for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Beauty Within
Ironically I was in a spa getting a facial when I picked up a copy of this book. After I read it I had to buy it.The photos and the quotes in it are so poignant and true to the "real" women who said them.To me it is a fascinating book that every woman should have on her coffee table. It really makes you feel, no matter what your stage in life, that real beauty comes from within.

1-0 out of 5 stars These women are wonderful.
This book is a wonderful celebration of the strength and lifetime beauty of the some marvelous women.Their images and insights give encouragement to women of all ages that "the best is yet to come."This would be a great book for a discussion group.I first saw it in my doctor's office. The best part of the book is that it is real.

4-0 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Far Better
The book itself is large and heavy; even so, a number of the photographs are spread across both pages--something that in my experience detracts from a picture's visual appeal. The photographs are in black-and-white and color; many of the color photographs are very well thought out as a total ensemble.
5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect 10!
This is the most beautiful book of the most exquisite women I've ever seen. The superbly reproduced photographs are not in the least pornographic, but intensely erotic. The women reveal themselves to you in private rooms, villas, mansions, etc., sometimes in stockings or erotic lingerie, in provocative, intriguing and very classy poses. If you love gazing at gorgeous women, you won't regret buying this book, which is a bargain at the selling price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book
The photography and the text of this book has been described in other reviews, but I want to add that this is now one of the most beautiful books that I own. The typesetting is flawless, the paper is of a much higher weight than I have seen in other monographs, and, of course, the reproductions are class. These points are magnified by the sheer size of the book-- check the dimensions given in the details above. The book is a work of art.

This book clearly deserves many more than five stars. It is one of the most remarkable expressions about and by an artist in any genre that I have ever seen.5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of his writing and photographs
This is far more than a picture book; it contains 73 high-quality plates and its real treasures can be found is the twenty page introduction and the fifty pages of selections from his writings about his work and views onphotography. As a full time artist, I found this book to be both rich andinspiring. If you have lost sight of why you shoot pictures, try this as areminder of clearer moments. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mind blowing
Having met James and briefly discussing his work, only makes me appreciate the book that much more. When I asked him why he did what he did and why he risked life and limb to capture some of these images, he simply replied "People have got to know."
5-0 out of 5 stars The most amazing and moving photojournalism
When I first looked at Inferno by James Nachtwey it was hard to believe what I was looking at. The images of the harsh and inhumane conditions in which Romanian ophanes are kept, the starving and impoverished people of Somalia, the battlegrounds and devastion of Bosnia and Chechyna, the social and economic divisions in India, and the terrible images of Rwanda that defy human comprehension. Nachtwey combines amazing artistic abilities that remain in one's mind with the raw and unrefined images of the harshest places in the world. To look at Nachtwey's pictures is more than just looking, but experiencing. When looking at these pictures you experience an intense mixture of emotions from anger, fear, sadness, and struggling to grasp how this acts could be done.

The photography in this book is beautiful.Ms. Scott captures the innate beauty and emotions of every dog she photographs.Just by looking at these dog faces, one can get a sense of the hardship, the longing, and the hope of these canines. The stories behind each dog gives them such depth and character.Of course, these stories leave the reader/viewer filled with emotions including sadness and joy, but most importantly, they provide a reminder of just how precious shelter dogs are and just how much they want and deserve to be loved.
5-0 out of 5 stars Man's best friend, forgotten...
This is a collection of photographs of dogs from various shelters, each with a short description of their situation. These dogs are the unlucky and unwanted, sometimes abondoned by their "best friend", and some are picked up as strays. The photos capture the character of these dogs, and some have such sad looks. It is heartbreaking to read that some of these dogs in this book were euthanized, sometimes simply due to the lack of space in shelters. In those cases, these photos are the only remaining evidence of their short existance. Recommended for anyone who loves dogs. A percentage of proceeds from sales go to shelters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!
Traer Scott has done an extraordinary job.The photos of these dogs are mesmerizing. A must have for dog lovers, and especially those of us who have walked into a shelter and fallen in love with a furry stranger who then becomes our best friend on the ride home. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Muscle men, midgets, socialites, circus performers and asyluminmates: in the 1950s and '60s, photographer Diane Arbus (1923-1971) cast herstrong eye on them all, capturing them as no one else could. Herdocumentary-style photos of society's margin-walkers were objective andreverential, while she often portrayed so-called normal people looking farmore freakish than the freaks. Her powerful work was well-received in itsday. Arbus received Guggenheim Fellowships in 1963 and 1966 and wasincluded in a major show at MOMA in 1967. But her work entered the realm ofnear-myth after her 1971 suicide. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Distortions
Diane Arbus Revelations may be a bargain, price-wise.However, there are many other women photographers who have produced much finer photographs. To me this book reveals Arbus as one who used photographs very selectively to portray a distorted, negative view of a subject. She seemed to exploit gloom as a trademark to make herself unique and gain notice.
5-0 out of 5 stars well done retrospective for a great show
This was one of the greatest photography retrospectives and the book pretty much summarizes as well as delves deeply into the issues covered by the show.If you missed the exhibition, this book is a good substitute. If you want to know about what you saw in the show, this is an indispensable guide.Highest quality reproductions, even in the paperback.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant tribute to a great artist
Diane Arbus was best-known for her stark, black-and-white photographs of the outer fringes of society. She was very much of her time period, since the things she had to go outside of the lines to photograph (inter-racial couples, people with tattoos, drag queens, etc.) are now a part of every day life. I was fortunate enough to see a display of her work at the L.A. County Museum of Art, and this volume is a wonderful companion to the show. Not only are all the plates from the show included, but also copies of correspondence, pictures of her cameras, and the story of her sad, short life. In many ways, she was ahead of her time, with the un-smiling, un-flattering portraits of real people, at a time when most photography was glossy, and reality was still somewhat hidden.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Accomplishment - Celebrate Labor Day!
WORK: THE WORLD IN PHOTOGRAPHS is another in the fine series of National Geographic books that gathers a group of phenomenally beautiful and touching and tender and humorous photographs from around the globe with the center subject being 'work' - man at his labors. While this may not sound as though it would be an artistic creation, the photographs contained in this large book are some of the finest color images you will see from our global neighborhood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Look at the World
If you enjoy the Material World series, you will love this book.It is a fantastic look at something that we all share, food, and how it can be so different around the world.Like traveling without leaving your couch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today.Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Hungry Planet.I loved seeing the photos of each family representing a country on this great planet. It made me think about how much I pay for food during the week, and what my family eats. It also showed that the countries that ate more vegetables and less processed foods seemed to have less diseases and spent less.I also liked to read how members in thefamilies helped each other out with daily chores. I especially found the essay titled, Baked, Boiled, Roasted and Fried interesting. It was about how humans are the only species on Earth that cooks their food and that humans are not carnivores, but cookivores. I highly recommend it and look forward to reading other books by the this author and photographer team.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another "make-a-buck" issue...
I too was disappointed in this issue of Visionaire like many others. It seems Visionaire has had an "up and down" quality issue as of late. Some issues are as elaborate as can be, others are like this issue, a cheaply bound paperback magazine in a cheap plastic sleeve. 3-0 out of 5 stars Classy-But Not What I Expected!
I was really excited about getting this new book by Mario Testino, one of my favorite photographers, but was truly disappointed when it arrived.Yes, it's a very classy publication, and comes in a unique &
