4-0 out of 5 stars Worth buying
Excellant and useful book.My only complaint is the first couple of chapters are basic Mac OS how to stuff and a waste of time/space. Be sure to read the Appendices on the DVD though

5-0 out of 5 stars Unjust Rip!
Lowering the books rating because the Mac requirements are higher than for FCE 3.0 isn't being very fair. The cover says HD, so it's obviously a new version. The description is certainly enough.I would raise the books rating and lower his.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only book of its kind right now
To date, this the only book that covers FCE 3.5 HD & I strongly recommend it. The intended audience I think is FCE users who would like to make more professional home videos but I think new filmmakers would also benefit from the lessons. If you're interested in mastering advanced topics like color correction, you'll have to pick up other books in this series. Overall though, this an excellent book for the beginner trying to learn FCE as well as how to craft a cinematic experience.

2-0 out of 5 stars Agreed with other reviewers-read manual or other books on the subject
This is not very good book for D50.The reason that author tries to explain two things at once.Fist how to take great photographs and second how to use array of custom functions on D50.He doesn't successes in either.Writer doesn't explain fully complexities of multiple functions of the camera. As for "how to take great picture" there are tens of books on that topic which explains art of photography in many details.Recommend instead to get truly technical book on all D50 functions "Magic Lantern Guides: Nikon D50" by Simon Stafford.I promise you will get more information from this book as to how use technical abilities of D50 to full potential.Do you for instance know that D50 doesn't lock simultaneously Exposure and Focus while you half-press release button (It locks only focus), because it's D50's default setting. You would think AF-AE are locked when you press release button halfway, because it works so in many and many cameras even point and shoot digital, but not for Nikon D50 (though you can make it so, explained in a book).

3-0 out of 5 stars The proper name of the book should be beginners filed guide ...
The first part of the book describing all the D50 panels is almost similar to the manual that is supplied with the camera.
1-0 out of 5 stars One gleaming inaccuracy
This Guide refers to the meter focus button, which would permit you to change meter focus modes with a mere twirl of the command wheel. Problem: the D-70 has this button, but the D-50 does not.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Addition for your Photoshop Library
Squeezed between the covers of this book is an enormous amount of essential information about how to do just about everything with Photoshop with a little bit of Illustrator thrown in for good measure. The author starts the book off with one of the best visual demonstrations of how to use Photoshop to make selections, replace colors, and many more. Using commercial illustrations he has created for national magazines and newspapers he shows how he achieved the effects with just enough information to allow you to be able to create a similar photo treatment without making it so complicated that it puts you into a comma reading it. While the latest edition doesn't cover all of the new CS2 tools, it covers the ones necessary for those that do photo clean-ups or manipulation. He even explains how the 3D model feature in Photoshop works - a topic most authors neatly avoid.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This book has many informative tutorials and is very good for anyone, from intermediate to advanced users.Worth the price!

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Book Ever Written
Some people prefer War and Peace, but that doesn't come with a CD, isn't in English and doesn't do a thing for the reader's Photoshop skills. And where are the pictures?

5-0 out of 5 stars Bridging the Digital Disciplines
Artists create by combining and extracting elements, often employing diverse techniques, to express ideas.Sue Bloom's new book brings her background as a teacher and digital artist and painter to the reader by showing how different artistic methods can be combined to create a work richer than any single medium alone could provide. She does this, not just by describing her own work, but by inviting 21 other major digital artists to share their eyes and techniques.Of course, she provides some excellent chapters on the "basics" of digital creation in Photoshop and Painter, but her book's unique strength, I think, lies in going beyond all of the usual "How to" books. It is a book which bridges these different digital disciplines. It covers collage and panorama creation, along with artistic tools in Photoshop and Painter while at the same time has a large section on "Artistic Considerations" (which includes "Experimentation" ideas).Bloom's first sentence begins with the question:"Where does that kernel of inspiration come from?"She brings us many tools to use.Along the way, she offers inspiring and thoughtful quotations from artists throughout history.I took great comfort from her quote from Emerson that "Every artist was first an amateur."An inspiring and truly unique book.BRAVO.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for learning new techniques and skills
This is a great book for the curious and creative artist who wants to use Photoshop and Painter as their tools for expression. The author provides plenty of information, step-by-step instructions and illustrations to help the reader go through the process and create his/her images. The book is not an introduction to basic Photoshop or Painter. The book is for the artist who wants to improve his techniques and learn new skills using these programs. You can practice, and apply the new skills and I'm sure that you will notice immediately the improvement on your technical skills.
5-0 out of 5 stars A rich palette to dip into!
Susan Bloom has utilized her talents as a gifted teacher, photographer and artist to produce a book that should be kept within easy reach of those aspiring to take their photography to the fine arts level. The book presents a rich palette of ideas to enhance images and to develop the digital artist. Through clear instruction and illustration she shows the extensive range of possibilities available for digital art production. The artist case studies and "instructional" sections provide inspiration, clarify procedures and highlight software capabilities.

1-0 out of 5 stars BEYOND WACK
You have got to be kidding me. This stuff was tacky when it ran in magazines...so now a book of it? Whatev... not to mention the horribly CHEAPO paper and way crummy binding. What was the guy thinking? Filthy lucre, I suppose. Three to six months until it hits the remainder table. A better subtitle might have been, "How I Stopped Worrying About What a Decent Book Should Be". Saveyourself the bread.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Weber fashion primer
"Blood, Sweat and Tears" is an essential monograph. Impressive in it's sheer heft but magnificent for Bruce Weber's beautiful fashion imagery and cultural significance for a quarter century.
2-0 out of 5 stars Truth be told: pretty lame
The paper quality is poor, and the colors are washed out and not at all crisp. If you already own "Men without Ties," you can definitely skip this book. ... Read more

This book is truly a celebration of life.If you read this book and still think that allowing abortions on demand is okay, then your heart has grown too hard.dls

5-0 out of 5 stars Miracle:A Celebration of New Life
The book filled with unbelievable moving pictures of babies and the lovely songs on the CD make this book choice one of my favorites.

2-0 out of 5 stars some almost ghoulish
Some of the Geddes photos in this book are a bit extreme - almost ghoulish - with babies under stretched sheer fabric - giving a weird, almost preborn appearance to the infant. Most of the photos, though, are beautiful and creative and just what we have come to expect from this photographer. The audio CD by Celine Dion is absolute perfection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost "The One Textbook" for Photojournalism
I have been using Kobre's excellent book as a text for teaching Introductory Photojournalism ever since the first edition; it has always been the best source out there for teaching and has improved with each edition.I consider the current (5th Edition) is be almost "The ONE Textbook" for learning everything you need to knowfor understanding and practicing Photojournalism. A bit more on layout and design for Picture Stories would make it perfect.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendously useful; a photojournalist's bible
I bought this book for a photography class at Temple University, and it now serves as a wonderful guide and mentor toward all aspects of photojournalism. Readings from this book provided much debate and learning experiences for our class. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book in Photojournalism you will ever read.
I'm been reading this book for a Photo course. The Material on it is quite interesting and the writing is pretty clear. I have been studing photography for about 3 years now and by far this is one of the best books you could ever hold on your book shell. A++ to a great writter and author. Will recomend this book to other college students that are persuding to go into the a photo journalist aventure like myself. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars so very boring and arrogant
I was forced to read this drivel for a graduate photo program. God I wanted to kill myself and quit photography by the time I was finished with it.
3-0 out of 5 stars On Photography is Recanted in Regarding the Pain of Others
Susan recants many of the things she says in On Photography in her book Regarding the Pain of Others published in 2003.

1-0 out of 5 stars Has Susan Sontag ever taken a picture?
I opened this book very neutrally--I had never heard anything about Susan Sontag except her name, in a preface to an Annie Leibovitz book.I still can't believe some of the things I read.Sontag mentions in the foreword that she has an "obsession" with photography.I would argue that she has an obsession with resenting photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars George DeWolfe's Digital Photography Fine Print Workshop
Excellent book. I have many books on digital photography and this book ranks very high. Excellent work flow recommendations and clearly written. This book will also be used as a reference text in a photography course I will be taking. I have almost completed reading the entire book and making notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, photography can be an art
Too much emphasis is being made on the technology of digital photography, and even on the mechanics of taking pictures.Just as important is the artistic factor, which is often not even addressed in books that teach Photoshop. This book is an exception. You'll learn how to adjust the feeling and artistic approach of an image to create photographic art out of a simple digital photograph. If you want to learn more about the aesthetics of creating a digital image, this book is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Having taken the workshop...
...I can recommend this book to anyone wishing to simplify CS2 and achieve great results. Yes, the book does have a few problems as outlined by another reviewer and I will leave it at that. There are many, many tools available to the photographer in PS - too many in my opinion. George will guide the reader through adjustments in RAW, the usual histogram changes, etc. and then will detail the history brush. If you have never used this tool then the book is worth the money. In many cases when trying to dodge and burn you can damage the original image if not careful. Using the history brush changes all that with more precise corrections and more control over the results. If you are not shooting RAW, you will be and you'll know why after reading this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Adobe Camera Raw For Digital Photographers
I recently ordered and recieved this volume and also "Outdoor Photographer Landscape and Nature Photography with Photoshop CS2", both by Rob Sheppard.Let me start by saying I don't like to read that much; I usually get sleepy reading.I am interested in learning more about these two subjects. These two books caught me eye while browsing one night so I ordered them on a spur of the moment decision.Well I can highly recommend both of these volumes, because all I have done so far is page through them from front to back reading highlights and a few paragraphs here and there. Now I can't wait until I can sit down each evening and read some new material in these books. They are written for everyone to easily understand what the Author is explaining; and they really hold my attention and interest.Great books that should be in every Photographers library if they really want to understand more and get better at photography.Rob Sheppard; thank you for taking the interest and the time to write these books.I will certainly be looking for more of your work. C. A. Parrish

5-0 out of 5 stars Camera Raw - certainly good for a beginner
I'm relatively new to PS. In the last 8 months I've worked through most of Photoshop CS2 for Digital Photographers and Photoshop CS2 One on One and thoroughly processed about 50 (not a lot) photos out of the thousand or so I've shot.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner from Rob Sheppard
Rob Sheppard has done it again!Mr. Sheppards ability to make sense out of all the confusion is worth the price of admission alone. He offers sage advice with out all the hype. His non judgemental style offers you choices and explains why. He does not exploit popular myths, rather he unfolds the layers cloaked over what many have ascribed as trueisms. The book is definitely a how to and not a "do this."

4-0 out of 5 stars The jury is out... this filmmaker likes it
Obviously people have mixed opinions of this book. I liked the in-depth info, the readability and the color plates. I'm a director who is interested in learning more about cinematography from that angle. The Filmmaker's Handbook on Plume, or Bordwell and Thompson's Film Art will cover a lot of the same info for a cheaper price, but I like this book's illustrations and more advanced technical info, especially on video. Ultimately you gotta go out and do it, a book will only go so far. But as books go I find this one pretty great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Student Book
As a film student myself, I've found this book incredible helpful. Not only is it a great window into understanding how lighting and shot composition work, but it explains clearly and in detail many technical aspects of cinematography.Of course it's not perfect, but it's a great beginners guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the bunch
I have read most of the books Amazon sells about cinematography and there is not question in my mind that this is the best of all of them. It's really comprehensive and covers all sides of camerawork, both technical things like lens and color and exposure etc, but also composition (which he calls visual language) and maintaining continuity, coverage and what he calls "the language of the lens."

Having grown up in Miami, I found the book particularly interesting. The pictures were excellent. I thought the captions could have been a bit more informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Miami preconstruction boom and Investment
Execellent book - highly recommended, but get down here and see for yourself - what's happening to the Miami is magical and really a golden opportunity for all. Over the next few years Miami's Skyline will be transformed as builders and investors seek billions in pre-construction investments to turn the city into a the epicenter of the region.

If you have lived in Miami or have an affinity toward Miami, this is a must-have book.Few people in Miami like Arva Moore Parks have taken the time to document the City's rich history as the fastest-growing metropolis in the United States over the last 100 years. The "then and now" photos offer splendid matches, with interesting and informative historical notes in the caption.Great coffee-table book too! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good start for a beginner.
I have been looking for a book that would help me to understand equipment and the usage before going and buying any. This book was very instrumental in deciding what I need to get without wasting a lot of money.I recommend this book for someone that is beginning and has a lot of questions without a mentor to help them.Worth buying if you want to start a studio.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good instructional book goes beyond most books but falls short.
This book is excellent.
5-0 out of 5 stars You gotta see this!
As a professional photographer I am always looking at the numerous books that are published on photographic lighting, particularly portrait lighting. This book is the best book that I have found on this subject. It won't tell you anything more than you would get from reading a vast collection of books and figuring it out for yourself after going to numerous seminars and convenstions but this is the only book that I have found where someone has put what really is a collection of simple material all together for you. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Too complete
I probably found this book too complete; sure Prof. Stroebel gives all concepts for large format photography, but in my opinion all these concepts are put in the book one near the other without a logical education steps for the reader. So in my opinion if you already have got those concepts you will sure understand them, but if you don't know those concepts, you will have a lot of difficulties to learn them by this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE authority.
This is THE reference standard for view camera photography.Prof. Strobel fully explains the different types of view cameras and how to best take advantage of the bellows and various camera movements. This book first appeared in 1967 and has only gotten better with each printing.Prof. Strobel was one of my professors at RIT 30 years ago and I still find myself using his excellent book as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Complete" book on photogrpahy
View Camera Technique is a fantastic, all encompassing bookcovering not only view cameras, but all aspects of photography. Everything you've ever wanted to know is in this book. It will be a reference book that I will pull off the shelf for years and years. Well done and well worth the price! ... Read more
